Summer of the Suds. 07 Summer wrap up.

Summer 2007 Season

Any time you end the last game of the year with the ref coming out and handing you a trophy... its been a good one. Granted, we had a statistical advantage over most other teams given that we had two squads to work with, it still says something that we were able to come away with the Division Championship.

Even though only 12 of us skated that night, everyone on the Schlidaveurs roster at one time or another wore the Gold this year and really we all share in the "glory" of the win. Everyone should be proud of our season, not really because we won a gaudy (cheap) trophy, but because we really had some great nights playing hockey, hanging out, and sharing our after work hobby over the last few months. Even better, in the blogger's opinion, that now we get to do it again over the winter.
So join me, follower of the blog, for a short stroll down memory lane as we recap our summer fun. Please chime in with comments on your favorite quote, game, goal, 4th period, whatever it might be so we can all remember the summer that was. Lord knows some of us need help with the whole "short term memory" thing.
The season (and blog) started all the way back in May with a pair of wins to get the double headed beast off and running. It wasn't long before we had our share of high notes and forgettable nights as the season kicked into gear. An early season highlight was Chris Fosdick winning a game for the Cads against the Generals with almost no time left on the clock. Of course with the good you always seem to have the nights that some of us wish we could forget.
It also wasn't long before we got a chance to get everyone on the ice as the first Schlidaveur event came around. This one was a tie... the only one that would end up being a tie. That is interesting if only for the fact that the summer before 4 of the 5 Schlidaveurs ended up in ties. This season wouldn't go like that as we were able to pick a winner each of the next 5 times we played each other.
The Second Schlidaveur was not much of a game numbers wise... but it made up for it with the fourth period debut of new team favorite Miran James. Miran was nice enough to (marry Greg) to come out and share her unbelieveable culinary talents with us and she pulled out all the stops on her first night. The blogger still resents that he wasn't there that night... This wouldn't be the last time we heard from Miran, and we hope she comes back as often as possible. She also kicked it this night... wait a second... I wasnt there either...damn! This is ridiculous. I know that I'm speaking for lots of us when we say Thank You to Miran for contributing greatly to our summer fun.

The season really got humming as we made it into July. Both teams had their chance to taste success and to feel the sting of a rough night at the rink. One of the Blogger's favorite games of the year came on the night that newcomer George Moorachian split his finger open and had to have the help of teammate Kevin Parker (another stellar rookie) to patch himself up for a ride to the emergency room. George was back in no time to round out a very nice rookie season with us. We look forward to his contributions for many seasons to come.
Back to the Schlidaveur department. Schildaveur number three was a really fun game that had it all. Thanks to some late addition substitutes we had enough numbers to fill out the rosters and had a great night of competition. This one also featured possibly the best fourth period photo of the season thanks to the Parker and his Flying Nutbag shirts. The fourth Schlidaveur starred another pair of outstanding newcomers Jim Sullivan and Matt Elliot. Both of these guys were great addidions to our little band of skaters and we were really glad to have em. Jim finished third in scoring by the end of the season and Matt finished ninth despite missing a good portion of the end of year because of some lame excuse like getting married or something. Seriously guys thanks for joining and we look forward to having you with us down the road. Jim will be out for the winter but we expect him back for more fun next summer. This game also had the first Schlidaveur videos to hit the scene... a nice touch. The fifth Schlidaveur was another humm dinger featuring a big nights from Dangerous Dave Spenciner who really played great all year and finished seventh in scoring by the end, and Mike Gash who recorded yet another shutout. This game also had some nice action between Matvey Nikhamik and Mike Hammitt despite the blogger's family being in attendence. You've got to love when the competitive juices get going.
Another favorite of mine at this point in the season was the night Mike Jasse put four goals up after coming out of nowhere... well St. Louis... yeah I guess nowhere. And who could forget the night that Mad Matt strapped on the goalie gear and came away with a terrific win. That was awesome.
Ok... before I type myself into next week... lets move on to the playoffs where the inevitable Schlidaveur number six (playoff edition) came down. This was one for the ages. The Zombie roster came into this one with everything to gain but nothing to loose thanks to their two previous playoff losses. The only thing they had to hold onto was the chance to knock the Suds out of the possible Championship Game. Well the Zombies won that one but it didn't keep the Suds out of the Title Game so really everyone won. That game was recent enough that I think we all remember what happend there and the nice shiny trophy we brought home for the whole team to enjoy.

I know you'll be asking (Larry) so here are the stats.
This one here to the left is the combined scoring for all games played by everyone all year. Larry Bell once again finishes in the top spot with a huge 28 points over 18 games played.
Great job by Veteran Nelson Sharfman who ended with 27 and almost unseated Larry from that top spot. Big Kudos also for regulars Mike Jasse, Jeff Fosdick, Chris Fosdick, Matvey, and Dangerous Dave, who along with rookies Sully, Elliott, Parker rounded out the top ten. Excellent work by everyone.

Ok just a couple more things...well awards before I go out the door.

The Mike Campbell Award goes to Mike... wait a second. Is this right? MC didn't win his own award? Wow. Mike Hammitt wins the Campbell award with a gaudy 19 penalties and a whopping 34 minutes in penalty time. Sorry Hammitt, but another blowout season like this and management is going to have to rename this the Hammitt award. Campbell did finish second...
The Unexpected Weapon Award goes to Dangerous Dave Spenciner. Dave finishes with 14 total points on 9 goals and 5 assists. Dave brought it all year and really made an impact. Great season dude.

Rookie of the Year goes to Jim Sullivan. This was a though one especially since Kevin Parker finished with only 1 less point in the same number of games. Sully's hat trick in the Championship Game put him over the top. That being said Parker gets MAJOR PROPS from managment given that he missed the Championship game because he had Heart Surgery! Honorable mention to Matt Elliott... man a lot of good newcomers this year.

The Vezina Trophy has to go to Mike Gash. OEJ or Dr. Zero if you prefer ended the season with 5 shutouts (including one in the playoffs) and a stunning 1.53 GAA. Thanks dude. You turned in a great year. Honorable mention to Blogger favorite Lizzy who had her ups and downs but had a shutout of her own and never ever let us down when we needed her, and Mad Matt who had 2 starts and held the fort well. Keep up the good work.

The Fourth Period Award goes to.... The crew that stuck around that night in Brockton until 2am. How this wasn't featured in the blog I'll never know. I believe that group consisted of Mike Hammitt, Lizzy DeFlurin, Kevin Manning, and Scott Pounds. Way to go gang. On a team wher often the fourth is our best period, you've made us proud.

Speaking of Matt Kilroy. He gets major props for just being Matt. Dude puts up with all the scheduling and emails and then has to listen to the Blogger talk to himself while he trys to cobble together this space each week. Plus the guy shows up and straps on the goalie equipment from time to time to help the club... a true team player. Matt busts his ass for all of us and as CEO, CFO, GM, and all around BMF, he deserves a hearty thanks from all. Thanks.

Alright. Thats it from here. The Blogger thanks all of you for reading and I invite you back for the winter season that starts next Monday. Again, please post in the comments section, I'm sure I've left out about a million things that should get mentioned. So lets see 'em. See you all next week.
