Zombies Beat Suds! Schlidaveur-Action!

Cadavers(14) vs Schlitz (12)
Thursday 12/20
HinghamC 10:20pm

Zombies 4
Beercans 3

A great night and a really fun game with a good turn out. The Blogger apologizes right off the bat because he left the score sheet at home, so this post is done by memory (suspect), and I'll have to adjust it after the fact. As always comments are welcome and encouraged if I've (undoubtedly) missed anything.
The Cadavers started off with 9 skaters but ended up with an even 10 and I think the Schlitz had 10 the whole time. Stephan Wennik made a timely appearance at the end of the first period for the guys in Red. This was a very nice boost to the 3 man rotation of Jeff, Greg, and Marc Valenti.

The First period was a very tight affair with lots of good chances at both ends. Mike Gash did his usual good job backstopping the Zombies while team Captain and CEO Matt "Stubby" Kilroy played between the pipes for the Suds. The play went back and forth until Greg James, with a stunning burst of speed broke down the right side (winking at his lovely wife Miran in the stands along the way) turned the defensemen and roofed a great shot over the sprawling Kilroy. 1-0 Zombies. This goal came with just under a minute remaining in the period.

The Cads weren't done yet. Early in the Second Period they struck again, this time Roman Kurin (the hot hand) buried a nice pass from Larry Bell to put the Red up 2. It wasn't long before things swung the other direction. The Suds did a good job holding the puck in the zone (as they did all night) and Mike Campbell came crashing through the middle to release a nice slapper that found its way to the back of the net. 2-1 Red.
Campbell was playing with a strong D- unit for the Gold that included DWH, George, and Billy Pearlman. Speaking from the opposite side, they were tough all night.

The Second period scoring wasn't done yet as the Skating Dead struck again, this time a terrific effort by Larry Bell, who skated most the night with Roman and Matt Elliott. Larry made a charge and got off not 1, not 2 but 3 shots right in front of Kilroy, and finally the third try poked through for a 3-1 lead at the end of 2 frames. The Larry line was backed up by the checking line of Dan Gregson, Dr. Scott Pounds, and newcomer Blake Underhill, who really put forth a tremendous effort playing in only his 3rd game ever with us. Blake gave it all he had, taking every other shift and gettin it done out there. Great job Blake.
The Third Period was entertaining as the Gold made a nice comeback. There were all kinds of interesting plays and no shortage of bodies flying. Mike Daley, playing forward for the Suds, capped a bang bang play with a nice finish to get things going. He skated on a line with Nelson and Dr. Jasse. That line was backed up by the troika of iJosh, Mitch (Ken), and Deb.
The Gold struck again... but I can't remember who scored. Waiting to hear back... but I'll probably just post and change it up afterward. The point is the Gold scored again and tied things up as the period and game wound down. This led to some terrific exchanges between the teams with the game on the line both sides (I think the Gold had better momentum at this point...and more chances) were going all out for a chance at the winner.
This brings us to a face off just outside the Gold blue line with just under a minute remaining. As I recall it was Larry for the Red and iJosh for the Gold. Larry won the draw and shoveled it out and back to his left. Jeff Fosdick (playing the left D) scooped it up and gained the line past the wing on that side. Making a small amount of room and getting outside the defender (George) he let one rip. The shot clanked off the far post from Kilroy and into the net for the game winner. The Blogger beams with pride. The Gold pulled Matt and got a couple shots with the extra attacker but the Zombies closed it out and took this Schlidaveur home.

Really, a great game, evenly and fairly played (NO PENALTIES!) by all. That's really why we do this... the fun of these games. Thanks and Kudos to everyone who drove down through the shmutz that keeps coming out of the sky for a late night pre holiday-daveur.
Fourth Period Awards go to a whole bunch of people. In no particular order....
Miran James- Our sole "fan" for then night and anohter batch of scrumptious cookies. Thanks!
DWH/Gregson and Daley- For bringing the chow (Burgers and Dogs and Chips) and beer!
Pounds/Jasse/Valenti/Kurin and Campbell...et al. Beermen supreme. Campbell gets a double for bringing his grill.
Despite the Shmutz we had a good crowd of burger eaters and beer drinkers by the awning by the rink. Thanks again to everyone who brought things to enjoy. Oh yeah... one more thing.
Bob Cratchet Award - Larry Bell. Larry was "feelin the Season" when he passed the hat (literally) for a collection to help fund some of the equipment needed for the Campbell Poly Pavillion. Larry collected a cool $180 bucks and presented it to Mike before the assembled teams. Great job to you Larry and to everyone who threw in a couple bucks.

"Gretzky bless us... everyone."

Said Campbell Poly-Pavillion is seen here... pre freeze. Looks like an awesome set up for 3 on 3 hockey-drinkin' fun! Lookin' forward to it.

I'm holding off on Game Stars until I get the score sheet in hand. But I'll update the post.

That being said... (as it is being said around workplaces all over today).... If I don't see you, friend reader of the blog, I wish you all the Happiest of Holidays, Merry Christmas, Festivus, or whatever, this coming week. I hope all of you travel safely and can enjoy the season with the ones you love. This has been a great year for us as a group, and there is no reason to think, as we continue to add not only good players, but good guys, that things will only get better.

Teams Picked for Schlidaveur! Thursday Night!

Cadavers vs Schlitz

Thursday 12/20
10:20pm
Hingham/C

That's right boys and girls. The last Schlidaveur of 2007 is on tap for Thursday night. As you may have read in the CEO/BadMoFo's email, he and I have faced off "playground style" and straight up picked the teams for Thursday night.

This was how we set it up. He would be his own goalie and pick his squad, I would have Mike Gash as my goalie and I would pick the rest of the players for my squad.

Matt, haveing won the Schlitz mantle by coin toss picked first. Here I will recreate the first 10 picks just to give everyone an idea of how it went. Remember... I was already assigned to the Cads Squad by virtue of being the Captain, (nose) picker, DB whateveryouwanttocallme.
Here goes.
Schlitz 1- Dan Hebert (DWH) a good choice and the first time DWH has been first pick...
Cads 2 - Larry Bell.... you have to go with the reigning points champion....
Schlitz 3 - Mike Campbell ... Matt goes with big D....
Cads 4 - Stephan Wennik... Jeff goes with FAST D...
Schlitz 5 - Mike Daley ... Rookie of the Year Standout...good pick
Cads 6 - Greg James... something to offset Campbell
Schlitz 7 - George Moorachian...defenisve minded..
Cads 8 - Marc Valenti ... another D and Rookie fo the year candidate.
Schlitz 9- Nelson Sharfman... the cagey vet returns
Cads 10 - Kevin Parker ... another cagey vet coming off injury

I think I'll leave it at that... no one really wants to know if they were picked 13th or 16th... right?
So the final rosters look like this.

Schlitz
Matt in Goal
DWH, George, Campbell, and Pearlman.
Mike Daley, Nelson, Jasse, iJosh, Matvey, Deb and Ken

Cadavers
OEJ in Goal
Stephan, Valenti, James, and Jeff.
Larry, Parker, Elliott, Roman, Hammitt, Gregson, Scott, and Blake Underhill.

So let the smack talk begin. Pick a friend, and enemy, or whatever and give 'em a hard time. Let's get things stirred up right and proper for some good fun on Thursday night.
See you all then.
Anyone volunteering for Beerman....or Food/Munchie duty?
Send Managment an email.
That is all.

Schlitz game Cancelled due to storm!

Schlitz vs. Generals
Thursday 12/13
UMass 9:20pm

Game Postponed by NESHL

Paul gave the word late yesterday (much later than CEO Matt Kilroy) that all NESHL games would be postponed for last night. Good news for sure, given that management let all possible skaters know by mid-day.
Hope everyone had a reasonable commute home yesterday. There have been some horror stories to be sure.
In fact the Blogger's Father spent a tidy 5 1/2 hours getting from Chelsea to Plymouth last night. Some fun.
Anyway, according to the league all games will be made up at the end of the season, so we have that going for us. Its always nice to see our friends the Generals on the schedule, regardless of when it comes.
Remember everyone..... Schlidaveur next week!
All those interested in the Cambridge Lunch and Team Selection Society please inform management immediately. This very special lunch event is due to take place in the early part of the week.
See you then.

Zombies crush Deep Freeze!

Cadavers (13) vs Deep Freeze
Wednesday Dec 12
Quincy 10:10pm

11-1 Win!

This one sounded like a Stat whore's wet dream. With a small number of players showing up for the early going due to some construction traffic the Cads jumped on the Freeze early and never looked back. Since this is yet another game that the blogger did not participate in, his faithful and adept assistant iJosh has emailed this report in on the game.
Here's iJosh:
I'll let the score sheet tell most the story:
1st Period:
Scoring(Cadavers):
DWH from Larry Bell
Larry Bell from Matvey
Larry Bell Unassisted
Roman from iJosh
Kevin Parker from Larry Bell
Penalties:
None

2nd Period:
Scoring(Cadavers):
Roman from iJosh
Larry Bell from Matt Elliott
Penalties:
None

3rd Period:
Scoring(Deep Freeze)
33 from 6
Scoring(Cadavers):
Larry Bell from Kevin Parker and Deb Dalessio
Roman from Kevin Parker and iJosh
Matt Elliott from Roman and Ken
iJosh unassisted
Penalties:
None
Final Score 11-1.
Due to some major traffic issues on 93 South both teams started shorthanded. However Cadavers started with 7 (which would quickly become 11) and Deep Freeze started with 4 (which would eventually become 7). So Deep Freeze started slow and tired and continued to play that way the entire night. They had a ringer or two, but they couldn't really over come the lack of talent of the rest of the team nor overcome fatigue. Anyway a good game for the Zombies. At the end of the game we were trying to feed those who had yet to score. DJ seemingly put one in, but it was not called a goal. With only seconds left iJosh left a good drop pass for Ken just in front of the goal, who put a good shot on net, but missed by that much (fingers only an inch apart) and got denied by the goal keeper.

So overall scoring summary:
Larry Bell 4 goals 2 assists 6pts
Roman 3 goals 1 assist 4pts
iJosh 1 goal 3 assists 4pts
Kevin Parker 2 goals 1 assist 3pts
Matt Elliott 1 goal 1assist 2pts
DWH 1 goal 0 assists 1pt
Deb Dalessio 0 goals 1 assist 1pt
Matvey 0 goals 1 assist 1pt
Ken 0 goals 1 assist 1pt
Whew. The blogger is starting to sweat because iJosh is about to de-throne him. Great job to one and all.
This game also marked the return of Mike Gash in net after recovering from a hand injury. Nice to have you back Mike.
Game Stars.
3rd Star: iJosh. 4 Points and enough game with his words that the Blogger is getting nervous. Seriously. Thanks for the help and good job.
2nd Star: Roman Kurin. Another 3 goals for the Mad Russian. He's found the touch (at least against bad teams) ladies and gentlemen.
1st Star: Larry Bell. The "original" Stat-ho goes wild. Good thing too. Way to bounce back after letting your mouth run you out of the previous game. Good job.

Cads implode against Cones!

Cadavers (12) vs. Streetcones
Sunday 12/9
Milton Academy 7pm

5-1 Loss.

A tough one, on an evening when the Patriots were busy dispatching the pesky Pittsburg Steelers, there was a hearty crew that showed up to Milton Academy and played hard against a not-so formidable Streetcones squad. Unfortunatly the 'Cones got the best of the 'Cads on this night, but it wasn't from a lack of trying... or typical mistakes on our part that we commonly make.
First off we had true team player Mr.Nineandahalfdigits between the pipes. That's right Mad Matt Kilroy took to the ice with fire and determination (and a ton of guts) and even held the 'Cones scoreless after 1 period. Matt, despite any digital shortcomings, is playing better and better in net and that is a good thing for all of us.
The Cads went up one on a goal by Dan Gregson from Mike Jasse early in the second period. Unfortunatly the 'Cones answered right back on a shot from the point. According to Matt the next three shots were all tipped and they all went in. This is where things seem to get out of hand.
Word has it the game was reffed by the fellow with a pot belly, glasses and a penchant to yap. I think we all know this guy, and lately when we've seen him he tends to want to make the game about himself. This guy never shuts up, and has never been one of my favorites, and there is NO question that when he decides to pork you... well its pretty much over.
Thus started the Cadaver parade to the penalty box and with it out went any chance of winning the game. 8 penalties (some just earned by our mouths) called on the Cads, resulting in no less than two five on three scenarios against us. Not good.
Another interesting tid-bit was that the opposing goalie might have been the guy we fired about 2 seasons ago. You might remember him, he liked to let the first 4 or 5 shots in during the first period just to take the mystery out of the result of the game. This Jamoke might have seen 5 shots while Matt saw probably 30. Again... not a formula for success.
On the up side... Matt's wife Kerry was there to take Photo documentation of our poor play and sportsmanship. Enjoy.

Schlitz teach the Clinic a thing or two...

Schlitz (10) vs Clinic
Tuesday 12/4
UMass 10:30pm
7-1 Win!

Another game where the blogger was not present. Too many of those lately. Here to give a formidable game recap are some of the guys who skated that night to give you an idea of what happened.

Here with a first period recap is iJosh:
1st Period Title: Which Team is the Clinic Team?
After a 1st period goal by Matvey (who doesn't even remember how it went in) the Schlidaveur Team played a brilliantly lackluster period.
Even letting the clinic team tie the game before the period was out.
Score after 1: 1 - 1
Now here's Matvey to show that he does remember how he scored it:
I did score the first goal by stuffing the rebound from Chris's (he said it was him) shot, I just was not completely sure if the goalie managed to get a pad on it or not, and when I skated around the goalie the puck was already on its way out. However, the ref had a clear look and confirmed that it was indeed a goal.
Clinic scored on a breakaway, nice outlet pass from their D to one of the guys hanging out by our blue line, and he went in 1-on-1 with the goalie. Clinic actually had at least couple of D that were playing on a level much higher than the clinic (one may have had college experience and stuff - after talking to some of the guys on their team)...
Clinic goalie was making some saves, but had tough time controlling rebounds.
Nice job boys. Lets move on to the 2nd period.
Here's iJosh again:
2nd Period Title: Drunken Zombie Pride
After calling ourselves out for lackluster performance, we decided to play a little hockey. Roman got his first of two on a backhand that only I and the ref saw go in. It trickled through the five hole and barely got over the line. 2-1 Us. Then Mike (Daley) put one past the goalie followed by a Roman wrister from the right circle that beat the Clinic goalie. 4-1 Us. Then after a save by the clinic goalie the clinic D got caught with the Defenseman with his head down as he pushed the puck ahead of himself only to have me one time it top right corner. 5-1 us. (after 2)
And the 3rd period:
3rd Period Title: Finishing up with class
Two more goals a one by Mike on his own rebound and another -I think - by I think DWH, but I can't remember. Toward the end we were still playing to score, but were no longer taking advantage of the clinic team. Final score 7-1.
...It was cold and late and the usual suspects were not on hand. Therefore we LOST the 4 period as the clinic team drank in the rink and were able to wait us out.
And Matvey's thoughts again:
We won 7-1, but it didn't look like an easy win - probably due to some good D players they had and few "quick-learners" on the Clinic team who played good physical game, skated pretty well and displayed some stickhandling and patience that a lot of clinic players usually don't have.
Even Ken Goldenberg stopped by with some comments:
We seemed to really play down to their level and let up
(even for us) a ton of odd-man rushes. Our goalie was solid other than
perhaps their tying goal in the 1st (clean breakaway from at least center
ice--should have been scored as "defensive indifference" on our part as a
team) You'd have to check the scoresheet for when the goals started
coming, but our offense finally managed to kick-in and we cruised to a 7-1
final. 4th period Chris tried valiantly to get something started but it
was late+cold+UMass and most of the usual 4th period warriors were absent.
Boy its a shame to hear about the 4th period like that... especially after a big night.
Game Stars:
3rd Star: Mike Daley. Two goals and some more great all around play.
2nd Star: Roman Kurin. The Mad Russian finds the scoring touch with 2 goals and 2 assists. Nice going Roman!

1st Star: iJosh. A goal and 2 assists and some seriously excellent work on the blog, not just for this game but in general over the last season or so, you've always got great contributions. Thanks dude!
Honorable Mentions to Matvey and Ken(Mitch) for blog contributions. The blogger is in your debt.
