Zombies crushed by Blues. Its ova.

Cadavers (3-1) vs Blues (3-1)
Tuesday April 27th
Canton 8:30

5-1 loss

Team Zombie headed into the final game of the "losers" bracket last night high hopes and a good attitude against a team we thought we knew pretty well, and came away with a stinger of a loss and an end to the winter season.
The Blues were certainly not the Blues of old, lots of familiar faces but a few key additions. They had a new center that wore #6 who was a powerhouse of speed and ability, and another new addition that wore #88 who was also a big plus. Couple that with good performances by#13 (green socks) and the rest of the regulars and they had a recipe for success against a Zombie squad that was never really in the game.
The roster looked like this.
Jim Sullivan in Net
D1: George and Baker (later Roman)
D2: DWH and Jeff
O1: Larry, Roman(later Baker) and Jasse
O2: Neil, AK, and Goody
O3: Gregson, Nelson, and Dr. Pounds

Things started out ok for a few minutes. It was clear it would be a heck of a game and Jim had to pull out a few really big saves even in the early going. The Red found their skates a little and managed a shot or two but it didn't go long before it went bad.
At twelve minutes in #6 would rip a ridiculous shot off that picked a corner. Four minutes later 88 would score on a bang bang odd man rush. At four minutes left 13 would score on another great shot, and then he would get his second with a minute and a half remaining on another rush. End of the first, 4 - zip bad guys.

Not much hope for the Red but the effort was there in the second and Team Zombie played them to a draw for the whole frame until the very end when 6 would score on a crazy end to end rush with about a minute left. Five nothing Blues after 2.

There would be a bright spot in the third when Steve Baker, who had been moved up to forward in the second, tipped home a nice drive by DWH for a power play goal. They collected another pair of penalties when #3, a notorious douchebag, took out AK in front then headbutted him after Kenny stood up to him. He went for a double but the Red couldn't put anything together on the powerplay. The game would end in some frustration for the Red who had a hard time mounting any consistent attack in the last 5-10 minutes. George went for a rough somewhere in there but nothing happened on that either.
All in all a quite unsatisfying way to end the season.

Thanks to Dr. Jasse and Dan Gregson for the 4th period beer and at least we won that frame standing in the chilly Canton lot wondering how we just had our heads handed to us...

Good season boys. Now don't go crazy in the off-season and we'll see you in a few weeks for spring training...

Tonight! Cads vs Blues for a chace at the title!

Cadavers (3-1) vs Blues (3-1)
Tuesday April 27th
Canton 8:10pm

The Team Zombie Magical Mystery Playoff Tour continues tonight with the final game of the "losers" bracket. The Dead in Red will face of against long time rival The Blues for a chance to play the Predators tomorrow for the Championship. Both teams bring a 3-1 record into the game, and both teams only loss is to the Preds who await the winner.

Can't really say these two teams don't know each other well. We've got as much history with this crew as anyone we've played over the last 10 years.

The Cadavers look to keep rolling, after posting a pair of shutout wins last week in front of their goalie Jim Sullivan who right now seems to be running at about the same temperature as that Icelandic Volcano. No matter what you can count on a good match tonight.

Good luck Team Zombie... make us proud.

Cadavers Stay Alive! Playoff Run Continues!

Cadavers (2-1) vs Last Call (2-1)
Wednesday April 21st
Canton 10:30pm

4-0 Win!!!

The Playoff run of Team Zombie continued on Wednesday night as the Cads faced another 2-1 team the Last Call for the second elimination game of the week. The Dead in Red seemed to be gaining momentum in front of what is becoming a nice run by goalie Jim Sullivan. The defeat of the Tigers on Monday night has given the skating dead some inertia, and by all accounts they used it well on Wednesday to send yet another team home for the season.

Again the Blogger was somewhere in Florida applying lotion to his sunburned skin and washing sand out from between his toes so there is no first hand account. Guest bloggers were unavailable for comment in the time between the game and the bloggers return, but we do have some data and snipits to share.

Here we have the scoresheet rundown courtesy of iJosh and his Facebook Status:

"Bruins in OT? Not nearly as exciting as a Cadavers 4-0 stunner in the New England Senior Hockey League Semi-Finals. Go Zombies.
Scoring:
1st Period: Reynolds from Bell
2nd Period: Bell from Reynolds and Jasse
3rd Period: Roman from Shah; Bell from Jasse
Penalties:
2nd Period: Bell (Roughing - matching)
3rd Period: Reynolds (Holding - matching)

Players of the game:
3rd Star: Reynolds (goal, assist)
2nd Star: Bell (Gordie Howe Hat Trick + 1 goal)
1st Star: Jim "Tuuka" Sullivan"

A text from Dr. Jasse indicated that the Zombies wore out their opponents and got a big lift from thier streaking goalie.

Nice work boys. The blogger wishes he could have been there. Anyone with a comment or anything to add... PLEASE add your words with the comment feature. All words accepted. Good work. Next up Tuesday night vs Les Blues.

Playoff Madness Zombies vs Tigers

Cadavers vs Tigers
Monday April 19
Canton 8:10pm

3-0 Win!!

The blogger was on the road as the playoffs rolled on and Team Zombie continued its run, now playing in the "losers" bracket of the Islander Division Playoffs. That meant a match with El Tigre who was also one loss from elimination, on Monday night.
The Blogger being lost somewhere in the swamps and roller
coasters of Florida, we turn to a terrific guest blog appearance by Dr. Mike Jasse. Here is the good Doctor with a nice rundown on how the night went:

Larry centering Jasse & Chris Fozdick
Goody centering Roman & AK
Hammit centering Dr. Pounds and Elliott
Valenti & George
DWH & Daley
Jim Stonewall Sullivan ‘twixt the pipes
As you can see from the lineup, a formidable and confident bunch showed up for this win or go home playoff tilt against old rivals, El Tigre.
From the drop of the puck, Larry’s line set the tone and swarmed the offensive zone with a relentless attack. Chris, Larry & Jasse buzzed about the net with countless opportunities all game. Goody’s line would continue the torrid pace, cycling and creating shots throughout the night. Hammit’s group would do much of the same; the Dead in Gold were mounting continuous attacks. Due to the offensive onslaught and stellar D, Sully was not particularly busy but when he was called on he came up HUGE. A couple of saves would have made it into Sports Center’s Top Ten compilation, but one glove save off a zinger of a wrist shot may have prolonged our season.
Despite our, dare I say, moments of dominance, it was zip zip through 2. The boys on the bench sensed our 13 bodies were starting to wear down their 11 and a concerted effort for short, sharp shifts was talked about in the 2nd intermission. Reminders of ‘this is the season’ and ‘no OT’ were part of the banter on the bench.
Our effort finally paid off after a seemingly endless scrum in front of their net resulted in the puck loosening itself from the pile and Johnny on the spot, Goody jammed it home. One nill for the old in gold.
The Tigers, who had a couple of really good players on their squad, started to play with more desperation and started taking it to us a little bit. Our solid D held firm and when called upon, Sully bricked up the net. During a frenzied attack in our D zone, Roman went down and got clobbered in the melon by an opponent’s knee. Play was thankfully stopped and our dazed Russian compadre was asked by the ref what his name was and I’m pretty sure the slurry reply was,
“Tuesday.”
It should be noted at this point in the game there was only one infraction called (on the Tigers) and we managed to control our emotions and focus on playing clean, hard hockey. I say that because as the time started to tick away and the pressure started to mount, the guy who is out of the running for the Lady Byng trophy on game 1, Mike Hammit found himself with the puck in the slot (thanks to an aggressive fore-check by Elliott) and let go a bullet of a wrist-shot. ‘Ping’, off the post and in. This scribe has often said that Hammit has one of the better wrist-shots in the league but it’s hard to score from either the box or the post-ejection locker room. Mikey had a very solid game, was all over the ice, stayed within himself and put the game away with a beautiful shot.
Speedy AK would seal it with an ENG.
A sparse but enjoyable showing in the 4th with adult beverages provided by Chris Foz and Jasse.
3rd star-Mike Hammit
2nd Star- Sully
1st star-GWG, Goody

Brilliant. A nice round of applause for Dr. Jasse and all the members of Team Zombie who have staved off elimination once more. Looks like that win bought the boys another game... the next night.

Zombies fall to Predators.

Cadavers (2) vs Predators (3)
Thursday April 8th
Bavis Arena 9:30pm

4-2 loss

The Cadavers, the lone surviving member of Schlidaveur Enterprises remaining in the playoffs, took to the ice on Thursday to play a very scrappy and competitive Predators team. Unfortunately the result was not what we were looking for, but the game was a tight contest and Team Zombie certainly had their moments. Lets get right to the lineups.
Net: Jim Sullivan
D1: George, Valenti
D2: DWH, Jeff
O1: Larry, Chris, Roman
O2: Goody, Scott, Pete
O3: Hammit, Gregson, Blake

Lets say this about the green wearing Preds. They had their Playoff roster. A couple of half shields and a guy with tape numbers on his generic shirt (44), so clearly they were prepared and brought the talent. Beyond that they let the talent play and there were very few shifts that didn't see at least one of their strong players on the ice. This included Red helmet #8 Newcomb, and the centerman #14 with no shield that would score just a ridiculous tally in the first. The aforementioned 44 was troublesome because if you didn't keep both eyes on him (and hands) he'd skate right by you, and often did so to the Blogger. It was clear, from very early on that the Zombies would have their hands full.
The first period would get going and it didnt take long for the Red to act in frustration. The Green would rip off a couple of shots and by the time Hammit had chased 44 around the ice once or twice he caught him and stapled him to the side boards and went for the first penalty about 3 minutes into the game. The Red would survive the penalty kill and really worked themselves into the Green end more as the period went on. As the shifts rolled the Red would get some opportunities, and the longer the game would remain scoreless the better they felt. Jim would turn aside a bunch of good chances and showed his consistent stability.
Before the end of the period #14 would strike on a nice break that DWH was all over. In fact DWH was all over the guy as he drove to the net, then flipped the puck up as he was being ridden off and it went top shelf over Sully's shoulder for the goal. Speaking from someone who saw it from a bout 3 feet away... it was ridiculous. The first would end 1-0 Preds.
The second would progress much as the first, with more wheezing. Jim would pull out some terrific stops, and the Red held together very well under the constant pressure. Still, scoring chances were infrequent and eventually the Green guns would get us. Before that Larry would go for a hook at some point. No blood on the PK as I recall... The Preds would score again when old tape numbers 44 would rack up another sick talley and put the bad guys up by 2. Roman would be the next to fall victim to frustration as he laid a nice check on his man but would take a seat in the box for his efforts. Not long after... but not on the power play... 44 would score again, this time with help from #8 red helmet and the second period would end 3-0 Predators.
Team Zombie faced a serious uphill climb in the third. The situation would get worse before it got better when 44 and 8 would team up yet again, this time with 8 providing the finish on a bang bang play and it was 4-0 Predators early in the third. Things finally came around just a little for the Dead in Red and good things began to happen.
George was clearly in meltdown mode as he verbally berated a teammate as the Red struggled again with the breakout. But moments later the play was in the offensive zone, George had fed it up to Dan Gregson who made a great play and in turn zipped a pass to Dr.Pounds who was in the slot and finished the play for the first Zombie score of the night. There was no small hint of irony as George congratulated his teammates after the goal. Regardless, it was good play all the way around by everyone on the ice, and it finally managed to turn the tide.
Larry's line had been up and down all night, but was starting to get better chances. Only a minute or two after Scott's goal they would put it together. Larry would keep the play and work the zone, he sent it to Dan Herbert and he would send it with force to the net. Chris Fosdick was there to bang it home and suddenly the Zombies actually had a pulse. ...well... you know what i mean.
It was nice to see the Green react by essentially keeping its best line(s) on the ice for the rest of the game. I think 8 might have taken a minute off in the last 10, but I could be wrong. He and 44 and 14 would pretty much play the rest of the way making it extra difficult for the Red to keep the momentum going. Eventually Hammit would go once more for a rough, but he showed good restraint by simply staying in the game, and once again there was no scoring on the penalty.
The Red would fight hard, Jim would again close the door when needed but there would be no dramatic comeback for this club. A bit too little, a bit too late against a team that was going to be hard to beat.
So thats how it would go for the Zombies. 4-2 final and a first class ticket to the "losers" bracket and a matchup on Tuesday coming up. We'll find out who we are playing and have an email out for roster purposes Monday.
No game stars.
... but ....
We can say, in an honorable mention capacity, that the Cads did take the fourth period... and maybe the fifth. Its always a "good" night when the zamboni driver tips his hat and reminds you to pick up the empties on his way out of hte parking lot. Kudos to all who stayed... you know who you are...

Suds Stunned by D-Minus: Crushing Loss

Schlitz (8) vs D-Minus (9)
Play-in game for Islanders Division Playoffs
Tuesday March 31st
Bavis Arena 10:20pm

3-1 Loss

Ooooooh boy. The blogger was glad to be safe home in bed when this debacle took place. Thankfully the guestbloggers have come forward, after a few days to put some perspective on things, and have given us something of a game story to try and figure out what happened. Major ups to iJosh for his usuall excellent work, and to Scott Pounds as well for his humorus contributions. Well, without further delay... lets start with iJosh:

With the season on the brink the Schlitz waltzed into Bavis Arena for a play-in show down with D Minus. The team had a good showing with a full squad of 13 in attendance. Everyone seemed confident that the job could get done and that the Suds could continue on into the next round of the playoffs on Thursday.

So the game would begin with the forwards of: AK, Dr. Pounds, Jasse, Steve Baker, Matt Elliott, Nelson, Matvey, Neil and Mike Daley.
The defensemen would be: Capt George, iJosh, Mark Reynolds and DWH.
Early on Schlitz would control the play. Nice passing, good movement and definitely good opportunities. But nothing to show for it. Defensively the team looked pretty good early as well. Then midway through the 1st the first mistake would cost Schlitz. In the defensive zone with the puck moving forward, a bad pass would be made and deflect to a D- player. The defense would scramble back, but it was too late. D- would make a pass and make a shot. Lizzy would make the initial save, but it would not be enough to prevent the goal. That would leave the team down 1-0. Somewhere in there Mr. Reynolds would get the first penalty of the game. That one would be killed. But the period would still end with Schlitz down 1-0.

The second period would see more good play without much to show for it. But the few mistakes made would be costly. D- would net another goal early on the power play as Neil Shah was called for a ticky-tack call that even the other ref admitted should have been let go. But the damage would be done and the Golden Suds would trail 2-0. Later in the 2nd, Steve Baker would get cross checked from behind by the goalie. After a few seconds, Steve would collect his thoughts and go after the goal keep. The bad news, Steve was headed to the box. The good news, so was someone else to serve for the goalie. Though the ref explained that he had the cross check before Steve retaliated. So that was a power play lost. We've all been there. No harm done. We suck on the power play anyway. So back to five on five hockey. More opportunities were had. A few tips that the Minus goalkeeper just kept finding a way to get his stick/glove/body in the way. So with 2 periods down, Schlitz would be 2 goals down 2-0.
Down only 2 goals and some good play (mixed with some fatal errors) it wasn't unreasonable to think that the Golden Suds could mount a comeback. Team continued to push the puck and take chances. But it wasn't until Steve Baker made a few nifty moves going around the net, squaring in front and making a nice shot did the Schlitz finally get on the board. This would leave us behind only 1 goal with about 7 minutes or so left to play. There were definitely chances. But again nothing to show for it. Then Capt George would push the puck forward leaving only iJosh on the blueline. After a shot sped out toward the high slot, iJosh opted to not chase the puck (seeing that he had no backup) and started to retreat. Matvey was on the chase as well, but as iJosh got to the defensive blue line, he tripped and left Lizzy all alone. The puck would hit her in the shoulder and flip over her and into the net giving the Minus a 3-1 lead. On the next shift, Reynolds would get called on another penalty and be admonished for shooting the puck up the boards while play was still going. No matter, the game would end without any more major action.
And thus ends the season for the Schlitz.

Unfortunately there would be no 4th period. It seems no one thought they could handle the biblical storm and decided to row on home.
==
Ug. Thanks for the story Josh... grim and depressing as it may be...
Lets see what the always ticklish Dr. Pounds had to add concerning this playoff performance.
Here's Scott:

Their goalie was a criminal. We wuz robbed!

He was on fire

and he stoned us.
