Rosters! 3 Game Week starts Sunday!

After a week off and a long weekend full of Burgers, Dogs, Brews and anything else you depraved maniacs might have ingested over the holiday... we have a busy week.

The Cadavers hit the pond on Sunday night in Canton with a 10:20pm match up with our old friends(likely division rival) the Deep Freeze. Sunday night games are tough attendance wise, so don't go getting blitzed at your neighbors cookout and blowing off the game... be sure you show.

Then we will have the First 'Daveur of the season with a big Tuesday night tilt in Canton at 7pm. That's right... 7pm... so you North Shore guys need to plan ahead and consider traffic. Be sure to leave enough time to get to the game... there was construction in that area as well last time we played there. The 'Daveur rosters will be settled on over the weekend by Guest GM Mike Campbell. Mike can't attend the game but will be cooking up the recipe for an interesting matchup for the rest of us. Lets see what he comes up with.

The week closes out with Thursday night and a Schlitz vs. Last Call game, at 7pm, in Dedham. Could be another, "take the temperature" game, but we wont know 'til we see who we're playing. To the blogger's recollection we've never played these guys before, and there is no record from past seasons of which division they played in. Again plan your travel to get there on time.
Check out the rosters below and let Management know ASAP if you can't make it. Thanks.

Zombies Crushed in the Brock.

Cadavers (1) vs Rte138 Autobody
Wednesday May 21st
Brockton 9:50pm

11-2 loss.

You knew… with a name like Rt138 Autobody that the guys were not going to be our regular competition. I just knew it. A look at the Standings showed they were a regular C level squad… I think that Paul just throws us to these guys form time to time as a barometer on our performance. The Suds passed against the Inglewood Jacks but the Dead in Red clearly fell short last night as the competition owned us from the start to the finish.

Its no good when you field a nice strong lineup… one of our best, (despite losing Greg James at the last minute) we had Campbell, Valenti, Capt.George, and Jeff on D, and a solid handfull of forwards, that represented some of our quality, featuring Larry, The Venerable Sharfman, Sully, Pahkah, Matvey, Elliot and the freshly Vegased Gregson.Lizzy made a return to the crease at her “home” rink in the “City of Champions”.
We really were in pretty good shape.. and the Zombies were braced when we hit the ice and 138Autobody were about what I expected... except there was about 14 of them… oh yeah and they were bigger than the usual guys… and half of them didn’t wear shields… this was looknig grim. I think they did have 14… some of them grumbled about everyone showing up fo the first game of the year.... pity.
Here’s the deal. We scored first. Frantically attcking their zone the dead in Red made a nice couple of chances then kept after a loose puck in the crease. The whistle didn’t blow as the Red converged Gregson and Nikhamik digging hard with Matvey eventuallly poking it home. Ok.. things are looking up… 8 minutes in and we were holding our own and still ahead 1-0. Lizzy held tough on the first 3-4 shots which was huge.

Then it came. The wave. The guys in black n’white decided to take it to us, specifically keeping it in our zone for the next 8 minutes straight to see how we took it. Not. Too. Well. A pair of chase around shifts and they cracked the ice. There really was some redemption or some moral victory in keeping them scoreless for the first 8 or 9 minutes of the game.
They took the lead not more than a few mintues later with another bang-bang play that made most of the Red groan. Nothing Lizzy could do about it in both cases. She was doing a great job making multiple stops, unfortunately they kept getting more chances on the rebounds and the Red COULD NOT CLEAR THE ZONE. Still with chance after chance it was only 3-1 after the first period.
The second was just a wave of pain. More ridiculous cycling… and cycling, picking their spots, holding, dishing, setting a pass and shot, scoreing... Pretty much non- stop, shift after shift. They didn't let up a bit and scored four more times in that period while letting us chase them around like... well you get the point. There were several times that in attempting to just ice the puck their D would just slide into position knock the puck out of the air and toss it back into the zone for more...frustrating. The third saw another 4 goals from them as they wound down the intensity as things just got silly.
Again… its hard to say or think but hidden in that 11 goals against game was a really solid performance by our friend Lizzy.
Seriously. Yes she gave up rebounds, but it was certainly not her responsibiliy when they would get 4 and 5 shots in succession, something was going in… and it usually did… but again, you can’t hang that on the keeper. I’d say no fewer than 7 or 8 of their goals fell into this category. They would get a shot or two, recover the puck, wheel around the zone, set up another guy or two with a few more chances, until one fell. Not necessarily an abject failure by our defense either, althougth there’s no telling how long the blogger will be funk-riddled after a less than inspiring -8/9 performance. There was just no way we were going to keep up with those guys.
We did score once more just before the final whistle as Jim Sullivan put one home long after the other team had stopped trying and were really leaving their goalie out to dry. So we did bookend the scoring... it was just those 11 goals they scored inbetween our two. To their credit they did not play us physical at all and things stayed under controll all night. Really... they didn't have too, all they had to do was skate around us.

They were bigger, much faster, and better skilled players, to a man. In fact if you ranked all of the players on the ice last night you wouldn’t name a Cadaver until something like 7th or 8th, that’s going to be a tough draw for us anytime.
So no, not an inspiring night under the full moon (see Matvey and Larry soaking in the moonlight...and nursing their beers...after the game) in the Brock… not a great way to start the summer campaign for the Dead in Red.. but hey those things happen. The worst thing is they beat us in the parking lot too. They had a full grill setup and a bunch of beer, and I'm pretty sure they were still there after we all left for home. Sigh.

So consider the Barometer checked. Check.
Now back to your regularly scheduled D level competition.

Enjoy your Memorial Day Weekend from all of us at the blog and Management.

Remember no games during the short week, then a busy week with the Cads/Suds on Sunday 6/1, SCHLIDAVEUR TIME Tues 6/3, and then Cads/Suds on Thursday 6/5.

Schlitz Open Summer 08 with a Win!

Schlitz (1) vs. Inglewood Jacks
Tuesday May 20th
Quincy 10:10pm

4-1 Win.

The Beercans opened the summer season at our summer "home" rink Quincy Youth Arena with a nice matchup against the Inglewood Jacks. Sounded like a good game with some luck going the 'cans way and then some going against them, but not enough to keep the team from its winning ways.
Here are a bevvy of Guest Bloggers to tell you all about it.
First off a nice summary from frequent GB... iJosh.

"A win and a loss.
A pretty good way to start the season on the ice and a disappointment off it. The Schlitz would come into this game still high off its Winter Season Championship. Early on a little rust showed as the Beer Cans were not yet in mid summer form. A chippy trip from Hammitt behind the Good Guy's net would give the Jacks a power play opportunity. About a minute into the advantage the Jacks would get the puck at the left corner of their offensive zone. The winger would skate in toward iJosh who was playing D on this PK. He would send a relatively weak pass under iJosh's stick through the rest of the defense and off the pad of Brian. It then found the smallest of gaps to make its way into the net.
However the Cans would not just sit back and take it. A shift or so later, the line of Reynolds, Capraro with Matvey at center would capitalize on their chance. After a shot went wide and landed behind the net, Capraro would collect the puck and somehow tuck it in to tie up the score. The period would end at a 1-1 tie.
In the second a ton of chances for the Gold and Maroon. This time rookie Mark Reynolds would net his first goal with Schlidaveur Incorporated and Schlitz would go up 2-1.
***Warning Artistic License***
Before the game Hammitt was thinking to himself that he was still upset that he was beaten out for the semi-annual Mike Campbell Award. He made the promise to himself that he would once again reclaim the Award that seemingly is named for him or at least will be renamed for him sometime in the future. ***End of Artistic Licensing***
So Hammitt, with an opponent nearby with the puck, gave him a little shove and as is the equation P=MV where the V for both players is equal and the M for the opponent is...well....less than Hammitt's. You can certainly see where this is going. So with the play obviously about to end with a PK for the Gold, Hammitt decides to cement his early lead on the MCA and shove the guy again. The end result: A double minor and an early exit from the game.
This would juggle the line-up a bit and would take some time for the team to find its rhythm again. But before that would happen things would get a little better for the Cans. The best player on the Jacks tried to take a pass from deep in the defensive zone to the blue line. As the puck flew towards him he would try to stop it with one of his skates.
That would result in an explosion of plastic as parts of his skate flew over the ice. He would hobble to the bench and register a DNP for the rest of the game due to his equipment malfunction.
Heading into the final frame Schlitz seemed confident that they could take this team. There had already been tons of opportunities and at least a little success. So the belief was that it was just a matter of time before the floodgates opened. Now all they had to do was finish the plays. And that is just was the Beer Cans would do. After netting the 3rd goal, Schlitz still tried to take it to the Jacks and finished with a nice goal by rookie Mark Reynolds for his 2nd goal and 3rd point of the night. That would end the scoring, but not before more pressure was put on the opposing goalie.
In the end everyone looked good. 1st star and newcomer Mark Reynolds looked great. That is one in the books and hopefully many more wins to come.
Now the disappointment off the ice. The Jacks, unfortunately kicked our ass in the 4th Period with more participants and a grill going. There is just no excuse for being beat in the 4th.
Preliminary Stats report.
Scoring:
1: Capraro from Mark Reynolds and Matvey
2: Mark Reynolds from Capraro
3: I forget [ Roman... ]
4: Mark Reynolds from iJosh and Mitch
Penalties:
1:30 Hammitt - Tripping
3:00 Hammitt - Interference and Roughing
1:30 Matvey - Roughing (though it should have been Interference)

Very nice recap as always Josh. We'll get a handle on those official stats after tomorrow.

Now here is another recap from a star of the "Vodka" line Matvey Nikhamik...
We won 4-1. The other team scored first. However Schlitz fought back led by our rookie Mark Reynolds. Mark at least had 1 assist and 2 goals (I think).
Our 1st goal - I took a shot a little wide of the net and the puck bounced off the boards back to the goalie. However goalie didn't completely cover it and Mark kept battling (there was no whistle) and knocked the puck out right in front for Peter to put it in.

2nd (I think goal) was also similar in having Mark battling for the puck (puck was in the vicinity of the goalie again) until the whistle, he got it free and put it in the net - don't remember the assists.
3rd goal was from Roman - We had a very good pressure in the opponents zone that ended with Roman taking a good low wrist shot through the screen. Again, at some point the puck landed on the back of the net in their zone, but Roman didn't stop playing (not waiting for a whistle) and knocked the puck off the netting and we kept the play inside the zone.
And Mark scored the last goal as well...
Some highlights:
Early leader for Campbell awards - Mike Hammit - taking a minor and then a double minor in the first game.
Roman checking me on offside call...
I was called for penalty while back checking and trying to prevent a breakaway (ref said I clothe lined the guy - for that we had a nice little chat with a ref while I was in the sin bin - it was absolutely friendly conversation - I tried to reach around the guy to knock the puck away, but the ref made a call on it...the worst part was my momentum still carrying me into Brian and me flipping over him in the goals while the other team was trying to score. Somehow Brian was able
to make a save on that though...)
The other team's best player, wearing something resembling hockey pants, had to leave the game when his skate blade or holder was shattered by a puck.
All in all, all our goals were due to good hard work and playing until the whistle.
Good start for defending Champs and Welcome Mark!

Sweet! Great in-game recollection Matvey. Nice to have someone recount where everyone was during a given play. But wait... there's more! Another veteran has tapped in his tale and we have yet another account of the game from old friend Dr. Scott Pounds!
New guy Mark Reynolds tried to give us low expectations during the pregame laceup, then proceeded to score two goals and assist on another. (My recollection without the score sheet.) He has officially passed the physical and cleared waivers and will be in uniform for his first
Schlidaveur.
The Gold started strong, but the Jacks scored first on a goal that looked to the bench like it slipped under the side of the net. Allegedly it went in through a crack between Brian's pad and the pipe - according to Campbell, who admitted he had a way too good view of it. Shortly after that, Captain George politely requested that the goal be tallied on the scoreboard because we like to know, you know, the score. The official reacted as if George had insulted his mother. No penalty was called.
The Gold found their legs and began to skate and pass quite remarkably, leading to a grudging compliment from the Captain again that the game was at times remarkably similar to hockey. We scored several more, they did not.
Rookie Mark figured out how to eliminate the opponent's best player without drawing time in the box. He wristed a puck square into the guy's blade holder, shattering it beyond immediate repair. Clever trick, but it doesn't get him any closer to the Campbell Trophy.
Speaking of which, Hammitt was called for a single minor early followed later by a double minor and game ejection. The second penalty was for breaking up the opposition's three-on-one by launching himself elbow-first into the puck carrier. The double was for following the player after he had gotten back up and abusing him further. The Jacks have not yet learned that when Hammitt knocks you down, for God's sake, stay down.
The only other penalty I recall was on a hustling Matvey, who backchecked in support of the defense - who were both caught up, lollygagging. Matvey used a move that I have seen many times in the rodeo but rarely in ice hockey, then sat in the box telling the ref (not arguing, as he later pointed out, but giving constructive feedback) that it was only the ref's bad viewing angle that made it appear to be a penalty.
And the rain held off long enough for a relaxing fourth period, thanks to Campbell for the Bud Light.

Holy Crap! Excellent Game story Scott! Some nice commentary work there, and humor to boot!
The Blogger is impressed with the quality of the GBs this week. Keep up the good work.
One more voice heard from before I wrap this one up... It's Goalie Brian Carey...

Great game by everyone. Outstanding fore-checking to the point that the other team couldn't get the puck pasted the red-line too many times. They score early in the first period that literally squeezed under my right pad. This is probably the best game that I have seen Campbell play on both sides of the puck.
Brian (1-0-0)

I don't know about anyone else... but is there nothing better than a goalie that signs his email with his record after his name? I think not. I like your style Brian... I think we'll keep you. Here's hoping that the middle number stays a zero for quite some time.

Thanks again to everyone who chimed in. The more voices the better... The Cads open up tonight in Brockton against RT138 Autobody... whoever they are... if you are skating then I'll see you tonight.

According to Mike Campbell the "Jacks" even had arm patches with Jules from Pulp Fiction on them... that is about 7 shades of Awesome... as far as the Blogger is concerned...

Farewell to a Teammate

From time to time the blogger has to write about something other than all the great fun we have playing hockey, hanging out, drinking beer, and eating delicious treats after the games. Sometimes life comes along and changes up the scenario on you, and something goes away, for good. Change, on any level, can be a formidable opponent, as most of you know.

The point of this post is to let you know that one of our long time temmates has had some tough decisions to make lately, and ultimately she's decided to hang up the skates and call it a career.

Now, I don't need to tell you that none of us are exactly spring chickens anymore, but it is still a real drag to hear that someone so young, and active, is ready set aside the sport of hockey for less dangerous hobbies and pursuits.

I heard through Mitch and iJosh that Deb Dalessio (DJ to all of us) was fighting an injury and was considering calling it quits as this winter season wore on. I reached out to Deb to see what was up, and she responded to my questions with a nice email explaining her situation, and the tough decision she faced. I've included her entire message here for you all so she can tell the story in her own words.

"I started playing in either 1997 or 1998 with the CADavers. Mitch got me and my (then) boyfriend (now husband) onto the team. We knew Mitch and Josh from college. I had just moved back to Boston after living in New Hampshire for a couple of years. We were playing in Fessendon as I recall and getting beaten by 10 goals every game. At some point, my husband lost his passion for the game, but I didn't.
Nelson's wife Gretchen used to play with the CADavers and she got me on the women's team I am retiring from. I am competitive on the women's team, unlike the CADavers, where I'm always been one of the worst players. But despite this, I've always enjoyed playing on the CADavers and always had good friends on the team.
I've gotten 2 concussions with the women's team this year. A few years ago I got a big one where I didn't lose consciousness, but I was very slow and had trouble talking. (When someone asked me what happened, my answer was "Hit head, hit head" spoken like a 3 year old). My concussions have been on the minor side (this year anyway), but both have resulted from very minor contact. My big concussion was not a big hit either. My husband's high school friend is a neuropsychologist and his boss advises the NFL on concussions. When Dan's friend told him about my concussions, he said I should stop playing. Let's face it, if minor contact gives me headaches and nausea, what would a big hit do to me. And repeated minor concussions aren't good either.
I've been putting off sending the official e-mail because it's hard to admit the truth. I play with three women on the other team who are over 50, and I've always hoped I'd play hockey that long, but now I won't make it to 40.
I've also been putting off coming to a game, because I'll probably embarrass you all by crying. I finally told the women's coach a week ago and I let loose the waterworks (and the poor guy is over 70). So I guess, no, I'm not taking it too well, but hockey's been a good part of my life for over 15 years, and I'll definitely miss it.
I've always enjoyed playing with the CADavers. Over the 10 years some teams have been better than others. Though this current team isn't the most talented (though FAR from the worst), it's definitely one of the most fun to play with. No one has ever hesitated to pass me the puck, even when I was missing them right and left. It's a very upbeat team and everyone has fun whether losing or winning (though everyone would prefer to win).
I wish everyone the best of luck.
-dj"

There you have it. Friends, I don't mind telling you that faced with the same decision... I would not be handling it as well as DJ. I think any of us confronted with the prospect of losing the sport of hockey would be facing some personal difficulty. I sense she's taking it like she took her shifts on the ice, with grit and determination. Just playing with a bunch of foul-mouthed, smelly, old-guys like us is enough to scare anyone off but DJ was always game.... and never put off by seeing any of us with our shirts off. (also nice enough not to laugh...)

Deb, on behalf of Management and the whole roster, I wish you the best of luck in the future. I hope you never have another concussion and you find some other sport or activity to fill the void left behind by playing with the Zombies and Suds. You are always welcome to come hang out with us even if you aren't on the ice.

We were always a stronger roster with you on it, and you've been with us for 10 years. A decade is no short stint. Regardless of speed or size, (or gender), you never shied away from an opponent, (let alone Campbell during the 'daveurs), and you were always where you needed to be, trying your best ,every night you played. No player could ask for a better teammate.
Thanks for playing with us. Good luck, and take care.

By the way... the equipment manager here at Schlidaveur International has been told NOT to give out your jersey number 24. That one is yours.
(Unless you feel like selling it to a rookie...)

Readers please feel free to comment... in only takes a moment.

Winter 07-08 Wrap and Stats!

Winter 2007-2008 Season Wrap Up

Another successful year down in the books and this time not only did both teams make the playoffs but both teams made the Championship Game... twice. The Golden Schlitz managed to wrap up the First Winter Season Championship in either franchises history with a big win in a double-daveur. The Schlitz are now two time, back to back Champs and head into the Summer 08 season with a target on their backs.

This was a really fun season, lots of games, and a whiz bang finish... who could ask for anything more? Let's stroll down memory lane and take a look at the season that was...

Things got kicked off in chilly, crappy, I can't freaking believe I have to pay to park here, UMass a way back in October. Most of the games in October were at UMAlcatraz but there were promises and hopes for the second half of the season in hopes that we wouldn't be skating there all the time.
Before you knew it we were up to the first Schlidaveur of the 07/08 season. That one was noteable as Nelson took a turn in net for the Cads that night and won the game!
Thankfully he wasn't needed for the rest of the season, but due to Goaltender issues (injury, unavailability) Matt Kilroy ended up starting 13 games total during the season and played pretty well. Once again Managment puts it on the line for both clubs... way to go Matty. I wont mention his record for the year but his GAA of 4.69 wasn't too shabby for a beginner... and considering some of the games he played had some very high scores.
The Second Schlidaveur also was a good game, this one highlighted by a double 'cooning and a nice welt on Kevin Parker's thigh.... Not long after there was some serious grilling and some new and old blood added to the mix during and after Schlidaveur Round 3. November closed out with this blog err.. game err... whatever it was... I surely dont remember.
December didn't have a ton of action... or games, but we managed to slip in Schlidaveur Round 4 before the fat man came down the chimeny.
It wasn't long into the new year and CEO BMF Matt Kilroy got his First win in Net. Then there was the epic Campbell Poly-Pavillion Event under the lights at Mike's house. Pics too.
We found a new and exciting way to split the teams in Schlidaveur #5 going with the Goons vs the Lady Byngs... that didn't work out so well for the Byngs... this game also featured the debut of the six foot sammich!
The Schlitz closed out the month with another wild game against the Windsuckers that featured a number one star night for Ken Goldenberg.
Feburary had a couple special nights, despite only having a few games the whole month, but on the 5th we played a double header against the Clinic teams... that was special because it was the LAST GAMES AT UMASS! Woo Hoo!
Later on in the month the Return of Lizzy marked a wild night in Brockton.

Then the Schlidaveur Madness Continued with the 6th and final regular season installment. These teams were picked special.... Good Lookin' and Not So Good Lookin' and the rosters stuck for the coming playoffs.
Rookie Blake Underhill took Number One Star at the end of March in a nice win over the Lobsters.

Another great year ends in another Title for the Golden Schlitz... that has a nice ring to it.

Great work by everyone on the combined roster, and the subs, and the add-ons and the old friends visiting for a game or two... You all contributed to a successful year.
Feel free to add some comments about your favorite game of the season or any tid-bits you may recall from the Parking Lot or Locker Room.
The Blogger would like to personally thank all of the Guest Bloggers without whom the pages of the blog would be incomplete. Thanks very much for sending in your words, thoughts, and pictures, they were all great.

Well... I've got to get back to my rigorous offseason training routine.... "Why yes I think I would like the large Steak and Cheese, thank you..." I'm sure you are all doing the same.

Summer starts next week. See you then.

End of Season Stats

Fresh from the Statistics office here at Schlidaveur International....

End of season stats

....for all those interested.

This is all playoffs and everything, basically all games played since October.

As always click to enlarge the stats page.

Another great season for scoring Champ Larry Bell. With continued dominance like this management will have to consider naming the scoring title the Bell Award. A nifty 39 points in 30 games played. Larry racked up 18 goals and 21 assists in what could be a franchise record in scoring. Our statistical department is still working on that...
In the second spot, also familiar to the leaderboard is veteran presence Nelson Sharfman, who, in just 24 games played scored a scorching 34 points (a 1.417 ppg!) on 16 goals and 18 assists. Nelson clearly means business when he plays... and gets results.
This brings us to third place in scoring but clearly Rookie of the Year Mike Daley. 29 massive points for Mike, a major contributor to this years teams. Daley had 16 goals and 13 assists and countless great shifts. Nice work all season... of course now he's taking the summer off... but we'll be sure to see him again in the fall for the 08-09 campaign.

Spots 4 and 5 are more familiar faces with iJosh coming in just percentage points ahead of Roman Kurin, both veterans finishing with 27 points. Roman played 2 more games than iJosh thus lowering his PPG figure. Great work by both guys all season long.
Places 6 through 10 are as follows with Matt Elliott(25), Chris Fosdick(19), Matvey Nikhamik(19), Dan Herbert(18), and Mike Jasse(17) rounding out that group. Great job by all the top ten scorers.
Just a quick shout out to the goalies....
Mike Gash continued his tremendous work with 22 games played and a paltry 1.91 Goals Against is really some good work. Thanks again Mike.
The Stats department apologises for not having numbers on Chuck Slate, and goalie Brian Carey broken out. They've gotten mixed up in the substitute catagory with a few other players given that they joined mid season. Both guys were solid contributors and we look forward to having them around for a while.

Now to the dark side of the stats sheet.... The(Bi)Annual Mike Campbell Award goes to... that's right... Mike Campbell. After finishing second the last two seasons, Mike claimed his Award back with avengence this season racking up 19 penalties for a whopping 28 and a half minutes of time and one ejection on the year. Some solid work, especially with the usuall suspects right behind him, Larry Bell with 14 whistles and 21 minutes of his own, and Mike Hammitt former 2 time Campbell Award Champ coming in 3rd with 13 calls. Another sensational rookie Marc Valenti showed that he's bound to be in the running for this award down the road with a nice 9 penalty effort.

I've also attached Playoff Stats, and Schlidaveur Event Stats just to see how everyone did against each other and in the clutch.

Pics from Penultimatedaveur

While the Blogger gets caught up with his end of the season wrap up post here are a bunch of pictures from our first Ultimatedaverchampionshipapalooza Game. This one was from back on 4/28 and the Cadavers won in heroic Zombie fashion to force the UltimateSchlidoubledaveurchampionship Game the following Thursday which was lots of fun too. Some good pics in this group, thanks to Madd Matt Kilroy for bringing his camera, and props to Marc Valenti who took all of these shots. Good thing too, he had to contribute somehow given that he wasn't on the ice for the Gold. Thanks Marc.
And yes... the end of season stats will be up soon.
