Suds fried by Shock

Schlitz (15) vs Shock
Tuesday December 23rd
Dedham 10:10pm

6-1 Loss

Woah. No shortage of ice time out there last night as a weary Schlitz team would hit it with only 6 to start with, and a full complement of 8 to run the rest of the game. You can imagine there are some tired puppies out there in Holidayland this morning. The blogger is going with the 50 gallon drum of caffeine this morning in hopes that he'll make it to St.Nicholas time later on... fat chance... fat like a bowl full of jelly if you take my meaning... anyway.
We were thin last night (and we'll all be a lot thinner if we play with 8 every week...) but there was no shortage of Gold courage, or spirit on display. We took on a Shock team that really... I mean really... we should have been able to handle, a few bounces here and there, and perhaps a full complement of skaters... and this evening would have looked much different. At least that was the thought that i used to keep me warm on my way home last night.

This is how the game began. The hearty souls, wearing their courage on their sleeves were Mike Campbell, Jeff Fosdick, Mark Reynolds, Mike Jasse, Chuck Slate, Matt Elliot to start the game. Marc Valenti dressed as the game began and joined the D rotation about 6 minutes into the game. Mike Hammitt would show during the first and make it to the ice after the start of the 2nd to give the forwards another body (now 2 subs) to work with.

But back to the beginning again for a second. The puck was dropped to start the game and the Shock center (a guy who would then play D the rest of the game) would win the draw cleanly and immediately slapped the puck at the net, hard. The puck took a few bounces but essentially went straight at the net bipped and bopped and went right over Brian's stick and into the net with like 3 seconds gone on the clock. Merde.

Now... the Gold didn't collapse. It did the Blogger's Grinch sized heart good to see the guys in Gold respond and really we played pretty well for the next few minutes. We took the game back to the Shock and about 6-7 minutes later Mike Jasse would put one in off of a Valenti shot from the point and a touch from Matt Elliot. Tie game, still only 7 skaters... but not bad.

Then the Shock took a nifty break into the zone and fired and... we were back down a goal 2-1. Worse yet only moments later in a scramble in our end the puck came off the back boards from a Shock forward, hit Brian's stick and ricocheted right into the net. Down 3-1 after 1.
We were in it talent wise, the addition of Hammitt early in the second helped, but this ship was already taking on water. The bleeding would indeed not stop at all as the Shock would put another one in during the back and forth second.

The Gold had a few chances, Mark Reynolds, Jeff, Jasse, and Chuck just to name a few would get decent shots, all to be gobbled up by the Shock keeper like so much Who Roast Beast. So after 2 it was 4-1.

Wish I could tell you the third saw a big turn around and things went back our way... but that wouldn't be true. We continued to get chances here and there but ultimately were squelched out by the Shock who would throw another two goals in just for good measure.

There is an old expression from somewhere regarding our game, our goaltending, and our general attendance last night.... Sometimes you eat the Bahr, sometimes the Bahr... well you get the picture.

Major kudos to Reynolds and the Doctor of the 4th period ... Jasse M.D. for bringing beer and keeping our literary intellects stimulated. Also to WonderGirl Lizzie who stopped by for a sip in the chilly postgame lot.

That's all from here hope the Fat man in the Red Suit brings you all a new stick, new blades or whatever else you might be needin.... see you all next week (Tuesday) for the Schlidaveur.
Merry Christmas.
Left to right... Lizzie bundled up, Hammitt, Jasse and Mark Reynolds braving the cold the night before, the night before.... good work everyone.

Zombies buried by Call

Cadavers(12) vs Last Call
Monday December 22
Dedham 10:10pm

4-1 Loss

The Christmas week opened with a late nighter at Dedham between the Dead and Last Call, the Blogger was not on hand to play, instead he was trapped in a parking succubus somewhere near the South Shore Plaza and was only extracted at 3am the next morning when the traffic began to subside... but I digress.
We have a pair of tight guest blogs for this game, the first report turned in by Mark Reynolds who was a big game contributer on the ice and with the words. Here's Mark.

"We lost last night to the Call 4-1.
George-Hammit-Reynolds on defense
Larry-Roman-Ken-iJosh-Ken D-Chuck forwards
Lizzy - net

Overall, the Red played a competitive game. We had consistent pressure in the offensive zone resulting in numerous SOGs.
The Call beat us by shutting down our breakout plays, numerous odd man rushes, and a goalie that brought his "A" game (a ringer no doubt). They didn't out-skate or outplay us; we simply couldn't put the biscuit in the basket.
Lizzy played solid and was tested by some tough situations.
Kudos to Chuck and Ken D who played with extra intensity and grit. The rest of the usual suspects up front contributed and played hard as well, but it just wasn't our night. Roman, with some nifty moves, put one in late in the 3rd breaking the Call's shutout.

The defensive trio of George, Hammit, and Reynolds did a yeomen's job of breaking up plays and protecting the front of our net.
The game was played cleaner than our usual standards. Hammit took the only Red penalty which was a BS call (of course). The Call also only took one.

No game stars.
This is a game we'd all like to have back. "

Alright. Not the desired outcome... but nice recap Mark, and good job filling in on D for this game. Boy this season has just seen a whole bunch of heart breakers for both teams.
Here is Guestblog veteran iJosh (do I need to say his name...?) with an excellent late recap on this one. Here's iJosh.

"The Dead in Red had a thin 9 to play this one. The D would be Cap't George, Mr. Hammitt and Defensive convert Mark Reynolds. The lines would shape up to be: Larry centering Roman and Chuck. iJosh centering the Kens (Douville and K. Mitch).

The first shift would play well most the night. They would have multiple chances. However they would not convert in the first. The second shift would see less chances and when they had them, nothing came of them. Lizzie played very well early in the first, but would let one in later in the period. Kenny D would show some great effort/penalty killing as he was able to control the puck deep in the offensive zone for a good 30 to 40 seconds after Hammitt was called for interference.
As the period ended Kenny D would try to set iJosh up on a breakaway.
But iJosh could not control the puck and skated to the bench swearing at himself for not being able to capitalize on such an opportunity.

The second would be much the same. The Dead in Red were just, well, dead. Another goal would slip in and the second would finish with the Red in a 2-0 hole.

In the 3rd the Cads would fall even further behind as a quick 2 goals would put them down by 4. Now in desperation the team tried to net just one for the ego. After a number of solid chances, the 1st line would finally find the back of the net to cut the deficit to 4-1 (Roman from Larry). Though that would essentially end the game.

Notes:
* Mark Reynolds played a great D. Could have used 2 more regular defensemen, but Mark certainly tried to make up for that glaring need.
* Below freezing weather, work the next day, a 10:10 game and fatigue from shoveling equals people going straight home. Hopefully the perfect storm won't interrupt the 4th Period next time."
Alright alright. Well done Josh as always. Again, too bad about the outcome. Perhaps the Suds will fare better on Tuesday night. That's all from here.

Golden Gods Down Blue Dogs!

Schlitz (14) vs Blues
Wednesday December 17th
Canton 10:20pm

2-1 Win

This one sounded like it had all of the things that make it fun. I'm sure that I wansn't the only one disappointed that they couldn't play against our perennial (pain in the ass) rivals. The blogger is pleased to report that we have an excellent guest blogger this week from #12 Dr. Micheal Jasse. So without further ado... here is Mike with the recap from last night in Canton.

"12 Golden Gods showed last night so we incorporated the veteran greybeard's Abacus line change scheme (only a MIT grad could concoct this offensive strategic deployment).
Sully manning the pipes
Valenti-Reynolds
Pearlman-Daley were the D pairs
Roman and Nelson alternated at the center position
Jasse-Ken, Mitch-Chuck, Gregson-Fitz were the wingers.

Here's the Good, The Bad & The Ugly
The good:
A hard fought, scrappy, 2-1 win over those always chippy and evenly matched Blues.Goals by Nelson and Roman (a beautiful half-ice tape to tape pass from Reynolds sent our Mad Russian in all alone from the red line) where he deked the goalie OUT OF HIS JOCK and tucked it home. With about 4 minutes to go in the game to break a 1-1 tie.
The bad:
8 penalties
2 by Reynolds
2 by Pearlman
1 by Valenti
1 by Jasse (who needed a map to the penalty box)
I forget the other 2
We also killed off 2 5-3's.
It should be mentioned that there was no squalkin' at the refs in this game. The golden gods were quite mute as they marched (seemingly endlessly) towards the sin bin.

The Ugly:
Nary a beer to be had in the 4th period

The Ugly Ugly:
Can each player please request a water bottle from Santa the X-Mas and bring it to the games? We were so desperate we were shoving ice shavings in our mouths for liquid refreshment.
3rd star: Nelson. On the cusp of entering his 40th orbit around the sun, the cagey vet played his typical solid game with a nice goal to boot.
2nd star: Jim Sully Sullivan. Solid game in the crease. Played very well positionally and was quick when he had to be. Wasn't tested a ton but was there for us when he was. His only goal was a 2-0 and the guy roofed an impressive shot.

1st star: Roman. Not easy to play center let alone when there are 2 of you and Roman's legs were constantly churning. His break-a-way goal was a thing of beauty. A good game and nice to come out on top.
Best,#12 in your program

Great work Mike. Thanks very much for a terrific recap and a good night on the ice. Always nice to take one from the whinebag Blues... any time of year. Too bad that collectively we only salvaged 2 points out of a possible 6 this week but hey... its better than nothing.

Stay tuned for next week's game/s and be sure to get all of your generic holiday celebration gifts purchased this weekend!

Suds Cheesed by Rats!

Schlitz (13) vs River Rats
Monday Decmeber 15th
Bavis 10:20pm

5-0 Loss

This one didn't go much better than the first one on Monday night. There were a bunch of guys who skated both games as we only had a handfull of guys show for the nightcap.

This is how things looked. The guys in bold skated twice.
Campbell, James, Jeff and Valenti on D. Brian in Net.
Nelson, Larry, Ken Douville, Chris, Gregson, Daley, Reynolds, iJosh, Mitch
Again... a tough team with decent talent. They had at least 2 guys who could turn it on and off as needed and made for an uphill climb for the tired boys in Gold. This game was similar to the first one in that we hung with them for a long time and the game was very close for a long long time. Then things fell apart at the end. (seems to be a theme...).
The Rats would score one about mid way through the first, and despite clearly being the better team, they were being pushed a little by the guys in Gold and there were chances at both ends... albeit more frequently at our end...
Here's what it boils down to. 1-0 after one. They scored with a minute left in the second to make it 2-0 (that was killer goal). Then the third was a washout. The Gold took 2 penalites, Greg James in the first, Larry in the third. Unfortunately there was nothing else on the scoresheet to discuss....

The Rats scored 3 times in the third to put this one away, and really it did feel closer than 5-0 ... but since the Suds never even got on the board... you can 't really say that.
So there you have it, outscored 12-1 in the course of 2 games on 1 night. Sheesh....
No game stars.

Cads Jacked in Inglewood!

Cadavers (11) vs Inglewood Jacks
Monday December 15th
Bavis 9:10pm
7-1 Loss

The first game of the double header was a tough one... just like the second but more on that later. The Cads had a tough matchup with the Inglewood Jacks and while there was no shortage of skaters (the Red had 14! by the start of the second) it didn't make much difference against a team that certainly had some decent talent on the ice. The Red showed plenty of Zombie Pride but it just wasn't in the cards for them on this night.
Lizzy in Net.
Campbell, James, DWH, Valenti, and Daley on D
Larry, Reynolds, Roman, Nelson, Carl, Matt E, Gregson, Mitch, and Chuck up front.

The game started out pretty well. Depsite some early confusion, probably due to the Blogger trying to stand on the bench and coach... the Dead in Red held their own for quite a while against the guys in White. In fact the Red would jump out to a 1-0 lead when Nelson Sharfman (who else) would land one on the feed from DWH. That lead would hold until the end of the period even after killing 2 penalties, Greg James for Tripping, and Mike Campbell Roughing.

Let it be known right now friends that Our Gal Liz was having a very solid night in the pipes. There were several saves made throughout the first and well into the second that were terrific. She was keeping the Red in the game as the Jacks started to turn the tide.

They wouldn't be denied all night and they broke through to tie it in first 5 minutes of the second. Then the would go ahead a short time later on another good goal after spending a long time in the Red end. The killer would come at the end of the second though. On a power play (Valenti) they would make it 3-1 going into the third.

Thats where the train went off the tracks a bit. Another pair of penalties for Valenti and the Jacks would rack up 4 goals in the period as the Red seemed to get slower and slower. The last one was a real in your face job with about 15 seconds left in the game. Ouch.

Too bad because up until the start of the third this was a very competitive game.

Oh well.... here are some pics from the bloggers cell phone for you.

Valenti gathers and clears

Campbell scoops one up in front of Liz

Zombies Win Sunday SuperDaveur!

Schlitz(12) vs Cadavers (10)
Sunday December 7th
Milton Academy 4:00pm
Matinee Specialdaveur

Cads 4
Suds 3

Wow. What a fun afternoon at the rink. The xth daveur of the season brought us to Milton Academy for a Family Matineedaveur where many of our proud families came to see just what Dad does when he goes to play hockey with his pals. First off our heartfelt thanks to all the wives and kids who made the trip to the rink to check us out. It was really great to have you and to have a bunch of people in the stands. It really made the afternoon nice.
The game on the ice was a good one. The teams had been picked by Dr. Jasse who picked for the Red and iJosh who picked for the Gold. The squads were pretty even and the game would be tight the whole night with the decider coming with just over a minute reamining. Can't ask for much more than that.
The Rosters were as follows.
Cadavers
Brian in Net
D1 DWH and Campbell
D2 Valenti and Jeff
Forwards: Chris, Jasse, Roman, Matvey, Carl, Blake, Reynolds, and Gregson

Suds
Lizzy in net
D1 George and Greg
D2 Daley and Elliot
Forwards: iJosh, Larry, Ken, Pete, Mike Fitz, and Kilroy
The game got off to a good start. Both teams jumped into the fray and we had chances immediately at both ends. The Cads would get the best of things in the early going though and Chris Fosdick would open the scoring with a turnover in the Gold end that he shot past Lizzy who had made more than 1-2 saves in the scramble. The Red would keep it up and despite the Gold's effort the Red would double up their lead when Mark Reynolds, who was a workhorse for the Red, put a shot home off the pass from linemate Dan Gregson. It was 2-0 Red and it looked like things could potentially get out of hand.
The Guys (and Gal) in Gold were not about to let it go down like that though. The Gold slowly asserted themselves and by the late going in the first the momentum was definitly not in the Red's favor. After Matvey was called for a rough the Red would score on the ensuing power play to come back to within a goal. The talley came from Larry on a combo from iJosh and Nelson. Pretty good group of forwards there. The first would end 2-1 Cads.

The second period continued to show the slide in the Gold direction as they continued to get good chances against Brian. D players George, James, Daley and Elliot were working hard for the Gold and doing a good job getting the puck up ice. Things looked dicey when Marc Valenti took a trip call that put the Red down a man again about mid period.
This time things would go the Red's way when Jeff Fosdick picked up the puck in the neutral zone then would let a slapper fly from outside the blue line that hit Lizzy's stick then went into the net for a shorthander and a 3-1 lead for the Red. That was the end of the good news for the Red as the Gold would continue to take it to us while the play was even.
Nelson Sharfman would talley one from Mike Daley that would make the game 3-2 at the end of the second.

Into the third we went in a game that was turning out to be very close as it wound down. Nelson (THE MAN) would strike again. This time taking a pass from iJosh then beating the Red D and nailing a beauty of a shot that went high corner far side on Brian and tied the game. You know (speaking as a defensemen who was on the ice at the time) its bad enought that you can't knock the guy (Nelson) over when he's on the puck, but when he scores such pretty goals to boot... its just not fair. Great work as always by the cagey vet.

Mike Campbell would go off later for a trip (dive) on Capraro but the Red would hold tough through the kill and limited the Red opportunities. Which brings us to the final minutes of the game. Both teams pressing like anything as the clock wound down. One shift more urgent than the next.

We had a face off to Lizzy's left in the Gold end. Roman tied up the play and shuffled the puck to the side. Carl Schiller took his man and tapped at the puck and sent it free from the fray. Jeff Fosdick would step into the space and reach the puck first. He fired low and hard and the shot went through several groups of legs and skates and into the net for the game winner.
Cads 4 Suds 3 is how it would end, and it sure was a fun one to play in.

Of course with the families in attendance many people made their way to Mike and Beth Jasse's house in Weymouth for the after party which was a Wing-Ding! Thanks again to the Jasse's for hosting our crew for the evening. The food and beer was great and big kudos to everyone who contributed something to the feast. Great times.

Without further ado... lets have some pics from the scene....
Thanks to all the kids for coming out to the game. There were great signs and autographed pucks and sticks after the game!

The kids on the balcony... the old fella security guard was beside himself most of the evening...

Dan Herbert (DWH) with new daughter Alex

Mike Daley and son Ethan at the rink!

Little Mackenzie Anne Fosdick (Chris' daughter) and Mom Alex took in the action at the rink and the Jasse's.

The spread at Jasse's was epic. Along with the Chilli, Meatball pie, and assorted chips and snacks there was the Six foot Sangwich courtesy of CEO BMF Matt Kilroy.

And of course the awesome hockey cake Beth Jasse made... hey I think I regognise those players from the rod-hockey world championships....
So one more bit of business... Game Stars.
3rd Star: iJosh for a 2 assist night, and a solid all around game. He kept turing up at the right place and making a good play all evening. Good work.
2nd Star: Nelson Cagey Vet Sharfman. 2 beautiful goals (and an assist) and just his regular run of the mill, all around toughness that makes him such a great contributor to any roster he plays for. Good job.
1st Star: Jeff Fosdick. 2 goals including the game winner with a minute and change remaining. The Blogger beams with pride and thanks Dr. Jasse for the "player of the game" award, that was presented in his kitchen. The cheese slicer will go to good use... and I'll refrain from making a "cut the cheese" joke here.

Really the Stars of the game were all the kids and parents who came out and made this such a fun night. Thanks to everyone, hope we can do this again sometime soon!

Stanby for blog update...

Friends...the Blogger is putting the finishing touches on his Schlidaveur blog post from yesterday's game. He also has one in progress from the Suds/Spartans game last thursday night.
Both should be up by tomorrow morning sometime at the latest.
Thanks for your patience...but more importantly.

Thanks very much to everyone who came to the Sunday Matineedaveur yesterday and to the party afterward at the Jasse's. It was really a fun game and a great time getting all the kids together like that. This is really what its all about.

Thanks again everyone!

I'll leave you with a shot of a group of the kids that were at the game...

Suds burn down Sparta!

Schlitz (11) vs Spartans
Thursday December 4th
Hingham C 10:20pm

7-3 Win

Good turn out for a late game in Hingham, even with some late arrivers. We were still able to start the game with 10 then added two more to make it a total of 12 to take on the Green Greeks.
The roster looked like this.
Brian in net.
D1 Campbell and Chris Fosdick
D2 Matvey and Jeff
Forwards: Capraro, Jasse, Reynolds, Parker, Nelson, Scott, Larry, and Roman.

In this league you never do really know what you are going to be up against from one week to the other. Who knows when a team is going to either show up strong with lots of decent players or show up with a weaker roster. We've seen the Spartans enough to know it can go either way with these guys. Sometimes we handle 'em... sometimes they handle us.
This night was good because even early on it looked like the Skating Beercans would have the best of this showdown. No question the Gold would go on to play one of thier best games of the season and all around a real confidence booster. There was passing, skating and good shooting too... hard to believe I know but it all seemed to work out.

The first was underway when Kevin Parker would land one from Matvey and Capraro that would break the ice and get us going. Not long after Campbell would pick up the faceoff pass from Roman in the Green end and fire a shot that would hit off a defenseman's leg and into the net for a 2-0 lead.
The Spartans wouldn't go quietly though and they would score with 6 minutes left in the first to get on the board for the first time. The Gold would counter with only 2 minutes left, when Roman would score, this time Campbell returning the assist favor to him. Mike kept it in the zone and Roman kind of skated around until everyone kind of fell asleep then he put a wrister into the net. The period would end 3-1 good guys.
The second period would see more good work on the Gold part. Dr. Pounds would pick a nice pass from Roman and Pete and would roof a shot over the keeper for a 4-1 lead at the nine minute mark of the period. This would be followed by a nice goal from Larry, this one from Nelson and Chris that would close out the second period with the Suds running way with things 5-1. We would have a couple of penalties, Parker and Campbell which forced a brief 5-3 that the Gold was able to kill.
The Spartans would come back and score two in the third, we would take one more penalty (Reynolds) before it was all said an done. The Gold wasn't done either with Nelson scoring a beauty from Matvey and Chris Fosdick scoring his second of the game from Jasse and Roman to wrap things up. All in all a pretty good night at the rink.

Game Stars
3rd Star: 2 guys with a pair of assists. Matvey Nikhamik and Pete Capraro. Matvey had a very strong night playing D and Pete had his susual high-energy outing that really pressed the older Spartans. Nice job both of you.
2nd Star: 3 guys each with 1 goal and 1 assist. Mike Campbell, Chris Fosdick, and Nelson Sharfman. Each of these three had very nice games, nice passing and finish. Good work all of you.
1st Star: Roman Kurin with a nice 4 point night. 1 goal and 3 assists made for a big night for the speedy Russian, who was an active part of the offense all night. Great work.

Campbell Polly Pavillion Assembly

That's right team... year 2 of the new annual Campbell Rink Assembly went off without a hitch this past Friday, the day after Thanksgiving.
'Daveur Management was heavily represented with both Matt Kilroy and Jeff in attendance.
Hearty Veteran Dr. Jasse was in the house, err.. I mean out in the yard, and was joined by newbie Blake Underhill as well.

The whole operation was mercifully foremaned by Mike's Dad, who was on hand to make sure the fire was hot, the beers were cold, and the crew kept their minds on the project. Good thing we had him there.

So... pray for cold cold weather, and we will be looking forward to another Schlidaveur night at the Campbell rink in Norwell sometime soon! Remember all the fun we had last year.
This time the engineers at the Polly Pavillion have reconfigured the layout to allow for a shallow(er) area which should work better than last time.
Hope to see you all there soon.

Zombies crushed by Rats!

Cadavers (9) vs River Rats
Monday December 1st
Milton Academy 9:00pm

6-1 loss

Here is Guest Blogger Exraordinaire iJosh with the play by play!

This one was a full team effort folks. Yes it was.
It was craptacular at every level. But at least we sucked as a team.

Boys and girls, I wish that I had better news and a more interesting story. However all I can say is that on paper, we didn't do as poorly as the last time we played this team. That, unfortunately, is not saying much.
To begin the game the Cads would have a healthy 10 skaters. This would be shortly followed by our late arriving 11th in the form of Stefan.

The lines would play out as follows... On defense: Valenti and Capt George; Stefan and Mike Daley. The lines would be: Larry centering Parker and iJosh; Chuck centering Gregson and Ken Douville. Matt Elliott played the floater role.
Gameplay would not be kind. The Rats out worked us early. Out skated us early and out scored us early (middle and late too). The 1st shift would end with a botched defensive cover on the point by someone who shall remain nameless, but is a common guest blogger. 1-0 Rats. Two shifts later, a shot from the point would get through again. This time from the other side. 2-0 Rats. Play would not get much better at the end of 1 it was 3-0 Rats.

The second would see better effort, but the Dead in Red were still outclassed. It would be deep into the second before the Rats would strike again for a 4-0 lead. The Rats would take some penalties. One for a crosscheck and another for a delay of game. But it would make little difference as the Red could not muster up much in terms of offense. Yes there were some opportunities. Larry and Parker and iJosh would each have a couple of shots on goals. But mostly the game was laden with missed passes and ill advised clears. The 2nd would eventually finish with a 5-0 lead for the Vermin.
The third would see the team come together a bit more. Mike Daley would rush to the net and eventually put one in to cut the deficit to 5-1. As the clock wound down, we would get called for our first penalty. A hook by Larry as he fell past the opponent who had changed directions on him. That would quickly be followed by a trip on the faceoff on the Rats. So with a 4 on 4 situation the Red would get some good pressure on the Rats. But that is where it would end. The final score 6-1 (I missed a goal there somewhere, but oh well).
Note: The Abacus caused a little confusion on the bench resulting in a little bit of frustration bubbling over. Hopefully all are calm today.
Great work as always iJosh. The Blogger thanks you... and gives his condolences to the game in general.
Look for a roster post tomorrow or Thurs morning for the Suds game Thursday night.

Zombies Bring Down Sputnix

Cadavers (8) vs Sitniks
Tuesday November 25

Canton 10:20pm

8-6 Win!

Oh baby this was a good one. A wild west style shootout with the Zombies and Ruskies going back and forth all night. Just like a cold war spy novel this one had twists and turns, handsome guest players, and plenty of "competitive escalation" on the ice.
There was some good pregame anticipation as we got ready to face off against our teammates and friends Roman and Matvey and their comrades. The Zombie locker room was a bit on the light side before game time when this guy/kid pokes his head into the room and says this:
"Do you guys need skaters? I was supposed to play for them but they have too many guys."
Jeff looked around the room, counted to 8 and said. "No problem." The kid (in shape and had the look of a ringer) said he knew someone on the 'niks and he had asked him along. No problem. So in an ironic turn of Glastnost... or would it be Peristrokia... the Sputniks held true to thier communtist manifesto and "spread the wealth" just enough to help thier opponents (us) out. Thanks commrades.
The kid... Tyler Mather turns out to be awesome. Not very tall but other than that he could skate, stickhandle, shoot, and pass with the best of 'em. He was a nice addition considering that there were plenty of new recruits in the Sputnik lineup that would have made the game a much more difficult experience had we not had our talent infusion.
The Dead in Red ended up with 12 total. Larry and Mather (wearing #1) centering 3 sets of wings. iJosh and Parker, Jasse and Jeff, Dr.Pounds and Mitch. The D was ably manned by DWH and Capt. George, and Hammitt and Valenti. Lizzy in the pipes.
The game was fast paced. Lots of stuff going on all over the ice at both ends. Lizzy was spot on through the early going.
The Flying Purple Satillites would strike first netting one at 8:36 in the first after a long scramble in the Cads end. They had broken through for the game's first blood and Team Zombie knew they had their work cut out... extra help or no.
DWH would strike with a great shot after a beauty of a rush up ice just 2 minutes later. Dan and George were really flying out there covering lots of ground against the rushing Russians. The Zombies would strike again with 3 minutes left in the first. This time Parker on the feed from #1. This was a hard cycle down low and a nice finish (gritty) from Parker. Larry would go for a hook late in the period but it was killed. 2-1 Cads after 1.
Good things kept happening for the Dead as Parker would score again (unassisted) at the start of the second. Niffty #1 would put another one in at the 10 minute mark and things were really looking good for the Cads. They were up 4-1 and the Russians were frustrated. Of course... the Sputniks had us right where they wanted us. The penalty bug would bite again, as it always does, in the second, when Parker went for a rough at 8:03. The Purple Satillites would score 20 seconds in to make it 4-2.
Then came the avalanche. The Cosmonauts would score THREE more times in the next 4 minutes of playing time to lead the game 5-4 with just under 3 minutes left in the period. There was no question a visible let down on the Red side as things just fell apart at the seams. The Purple were getting good shots and taking the game right to us winning battles.
The tide would be stemmed by the Red getting back on track with a great shift from iJosh and Parker and Nifty#1. They would do some hard work cycling and the play would go iJosh to Mather to Parker and in the net. Parker with the natural hat-trick, and well deserved. 5-5 after 2 exhausting periods.
The blogger is here to tell you there was definitely some Zombie Pride in the house as the teams took to the third. Everyone was tired. Nobody let up and we really finished strong. At the end of the first shift in the third Jeff would pick up a puck that Valenti kept in at the point and went through a defender to the net. He kept going and managed to get off a shot that found its way home and the Dead were back in front in the early going.
Another 7 minutes of hard work later Dan With Hands would take a nice feed from #1 in the slot and did like a turn around backhand thing (I think...) that put the Red ahead by two 7-5. Not enough can be said about the work of the D corps, DWH on the board with 2 and a bunch of play breaks, George covering lots of ground, and Hammit making some nice plays. Marc was probaly just happy he didn't have to deal with Jeff as his D partner for the night. Great work by all of 'em.
The game would have one more twist as the Sputniks would score with under a minute left to make the last 30 seconds interesting. Lizzy once again made some just terrific saves in the closing seconds as the russians buzzed around the net.
The game ended with (appropriately) our sub Mather landing the empty net with 3 seconds remaining to end the game 8-6. He gave a tremendous contribution all night with this legs and hands moving the play or stopping it when we needed to. We told him he could come back any time. (like when he's home on vacation again from St.Mikes...)
Game Stars
3rd Star: DWH with 2 nice goals and lots of plays on both ends. Breaking up plays or starting a rush, then finishing it, he had great contributions all night.
2nd Star: Parker with the hat trick, and probably an assist somewhere in there and just tough Neelyesque play all night. Great work.
1st Star: Who else but Tyler Mather the Young Gun, number 1, our able substitute that was very nearly skating for the other side... glad to have you skate with us. Come back anytime. Thanks.

Suds sunk by Lobsters in slugfest....

Schlitz (10) vs Lobsters
Monday November 24

BU 10:20pm

8-1 loss

Wow strange stories coming back from this one. The Lobsters seem to have improved themselves greatly recently and we've had a few feisty matchups with the new girls and unfortunately we have not been on the good side of the final score. First game we lost. The second time we earned a hard fought tie. This one was similar to the first beat down but offered some extra curriculars that weren't so prevalent in the first meeting.
I'm going to let our gal in the pipes Lizzy take this one with a few "colorful" comments on how this one went down.
Here's Lizzy:

" I am sure there will be lots of guest bloggers today, b/c last nights game was like a circus of fairies...Well I used to play against the lobsters alot a few years ago and the were nothing like they way they are now, they used to be a like really friendly team. Now they are like the whiniest and dirtiest team. They played real chippy, yet they were still able to draw penalties every 2 mins. Aside from that they whine to the ref every 2 secs. Its like shut the f up.

From a goalie p.o.v the first period was pretty even, 2 goals scored in the last few mins of the first period and they were truly fluke goals, one was a like a pass and one fell out of my glove on a one on one. However the lobsters, were already playing dirty, by crashing the net, and diving, and using their stick to hook, trip etc. But only we were getting penalties.

Mike and Greg played great d together and continued to do so. In the second period the lobsters took it up a notch and scored three more goals, which were for the most part quality. We scored on goal and it was by Mike D. I think. It was a really nice goal. Mike C. had a beautiful end to end attempt to score and Roman came pretty close to scoring to.

The third period was the worst though. The Refs were constantly favoring the lobsters and we had penalties like every two min's. Again, the lobsters were diving and playing dirty. At one point Matvey got crossed check in the head from behind, I could see it clearly, as could my mom who was in the stands.
The lobsters scored three more goals one which, went in by them just crashing in to the net and pushing the puck in. My finger got skated over and I was pissed so as, the game came to an end they crashed the net again so I told them to chill the f out b/c the score was 8-1. So number 15 I think said "take a tampon you bitch" So, I thought carefully about what to say and I decided to call him a c**k sucker as not to discriminate, but I also used another c word to in my anger.
There was a penalty shoot after this because a girl on the other team got hooked, and the ref said he felt obligated to call a penalty.(?)

Then with only seconds left in the game Kenny fought back when he got pushed and a fight ensued. Kenny was on the ground at on point and who he had a couple of lobsters on him. I don't know who jumped in but people jumped in to help. the fight got broken up and the game was over. Most of the Lobsters left without shaking hands.
I know the refs from work so they spoke to me about the game and said they had to give me some "paperwork" for the game. This was the funniest part it was like some suspension paper for Greg...and they were like this is official, and they told me to give the paper to Greg, they were trying to be serious but they new it was funny too...It was so funny. "

Wow. Thanks Liz! That was an EXCELLENT guest blog appearance. Nicely done, especially on your first try. The blogger thanks you. Too bad the game didn't work out the way we like it...
The day after this game the blogger was cc'd on a sent document from Greg protesting his written 2 game suspension. While there is plenty of humor there... none intentional... I dont feel obliged to share it just yet... lets see how his "hearing" with the league goes... if there ever is such a thing.
The story that the bogger heard is this. Newcomer Kenny Douville was taking some heat from one of the shellfish. He didn't like what the dude/dudette was sellin' so he had a few words in the face for him. This guy turned around and gave Kenny a good working over. Apparently Ken was not getting doing well as the scuffle went on and on with the refs making no attempt to stop it. Greg, being the standup guy that he is, came to his teammates aid rather than watching him have his head caved in.
Greg's description fell along the "I tried to restrain the fighting players...." in the parking lot last night after the Cads game I heard something along the lines of "then Greg flying tackles the guy beating on Douville..." As far as the blog is concerned these are the same thing. Good work Greg... that is unless the league upholds the suspension in which case Schlidaver management frowns upon your hooliganism.... at least that would be our official stance.
Please... Please feel free to comment to help out the blog to rough out the scene from Monday night. Anything you have to add will be welcome. Even if you shellfish are reading... come on and tell your side too.
