Shadow of Destiny

Tonight's game is for the division championship... For the Suds. If the Dead in Red can win tonight they'll force a final ultimate Daveur. But lets not get ahead of ourselves.

The 2nd Penultimate!

When you think of classic sports rivalries, who do you think of? Islanders-Rangers?

Sox-Yankees?

Maybe Bruins-Habs?

None of these compare to Cadavers-Schlitz.

Ever since these two teams started playing in the same division and started playing each other regularly, familiarity quickly bred epic storylines--and epic battles. Perhaps it's due to the number of skaters that have played for both squads, but there's just no denying that when these teams face-off... it's something else entirely. Often the games aren't truly decided until well into the 4th period.

Sunday night will be a re-match of the 2007 Penultimate game. The CADs hope to repeat that performance and force a second CHAMPIONSHIP-DOUBLE-DAVEUR (which the Schlitz won to claim the 2007 trophy).

The Cadavers needed to win a play-in round just to make the playoffs this season, and have systematically gotten the job done... with just one blemish to an otherwise spotless postseason record... a 5-2 loss at the hands of the Schlitz. Do the beercans have the zombies figured out?

The 2007 trophy was the last appearance in the championship game for the Schlitz. The Cadavers last competed for T-shirts in 2011, but fell short.

Rosters haven't been finalized yet, but the next chapter of Schlidaveur (which is apparently a rather risque word in a Scandinavian language) will be written on Sunday.

Team, friends, opponents, and random wanderers of the digital landscape... Welcome.

In these humble pages do I offer the game stories, mundane facts, stats, and proud tales of our Beer League Hockey teams the Cadavers and the Schlitz.

Can you say something is just a hobby if you do it once (or twice) a week for as long as you can remember? I don't know, but I love to play hockey. We've been playing with one incarnation of this team or another for ten years plus now. We play even if the games are late at night, or on a weeknight (they are usually both), and the kids haven't been sleeping great, and you have to be to work early tomorrow morning. We still go play. Its just what we do to play our game.

Our hobby... or what we do every week, sometimes(mostly) late at night in far away places. Then we like to have a cold beverage and talk about it in the parking lot afterward. Because that's a big part of it to... as you will see.

I got to thinking a while back that we should keep stats. You know, some way to give a story line to the season. So many of them had flown by, it was hard to remember all the things that had happened to the team or teams over the years.

Keeping track of the stats and email conversation threads that went on and on told our story in a new way. Which was cool.
Then I discovered blogger.

The Blog is a perfect forum, in my opinion, to tell our story, and the perfect companion "hobby" to my weekly sport hobby. Each week we get a game story and maybe some fun stories about the game. It works great now with the two teams because everyone wants to know how the other squad did.

So this is the story of our teams and our friends. I hope you find pleasure in the telling of our tales. A good game, a hard skate and usually a cold beer afterward. There are few greater things one can do with their time. At least that's what we think.
