Cads Pound Predators in Rematch

Cadavers (4) vs Predators
Monday October 26th
Canton 8:10pm

7-5 Win

Another in the long early season string of double header games this one stands apart for two reasons. First we are thankfully back at our usual winter "home" rink in Canton, and secondly we had enough players to (mostly) fill out two rosters without having the majority of the team skate two games. This was a big help.

Here is your early game, Team Zombie lineup.
Lizzy in Net.
Roman
Valenti
Goody
Elliot
Daley
Baker
KenMitch
Larry
Matvey
Gregson
Nelson
AK Douville
DWH
The blogger freely admits he did NOT play in this game and really didn't get too much of a chance to watch it. Any of you guys that played in it, please comment and give us a few words to let us know how this one went down.

It looked like a close game for a while, then the Zombies pulled way ahead, then the Preds came back in the third to make it close. Thankfully, given that the game was in Canton I have a beautifully filled out scoresheet that tells the story.

Mike Daley would lead off scoring just over 3 minutes into the game unassisted. If it was half as nice as his second goal, which I did see, then it was a beauty. Larry would land one from Gregson and Daley with 11 and a half to go in the first.
The Predators would answer a minute later to make it 2-1 Zombies. Kenny AK Douville would score from Roman and Goody at the 8 minute mark only to be answered by the Green with 2 minutes left in the first. The first period would end 3-2 Zombies.

The Second period was all... and I mean all Team Zombie. KenMitch Goldenberg would lead it off with a beauty of a shot from the slot, credit the assist to linemate Matt Elliot. Thats 2 goals in 2 weeks for Ken. Mike Daly would rip off a phenominal solo rush from the red line that would weave through half the team and end in a great goal, unassisted. AK would strike again from Larry and Goody, this one a nice low shot glove side. And not to be boxed out of the big period Roman Kurin would score with help from DWH at the point. All of these goals came before the 8 minute mark of the second. The Zombies would take a 7-2 lead to the third.

The game was pretty quiet the rest of the way. The Predators would take two penalties then all hell would break loose in the last five minutes. Must have been somekind of letdown but the Predators finished very strong, even in defeat as they score 3 goals over the last five minutes to turn a blowout into a pretty close game. This one would end 7-5.
No game stars for the moment....

Suds squashed by Blues in Nightcap

Schlitz (4) vs Blues
Monday October 26th
Canton 9:30

4-1 Loss

This game followed the 7-5 drubbing of the Predators by the Cadavers. There was no need for wholesale subs from the early game as there was a pretty good roster set for this one, but there was some pregame negotiation between the locker rooms. AK, he of two goals in the early game won out over the pair of Valenti and Bell for sub honors and he joined the following roster of Beercans.
Matt in Net
Scott
Campbell
Chris
Dr. Jasse
Jeff
Parker
Reynolds
Blake
Chuck
Hammitt
and Neil
A nice group backstopped by the CEOBMF and the game was off and running. This one was a typical Blues game in that it was close, competitive and felt pretty tight the whole way. There wasn't too much chippyness which was a nice change, and in all it was a good hard skate. Unfortunately thats about all it was for the Golden Beercans.
The Blues would open up scoring with a nice break by their young star with the red pants, number 8. The Gold would answer though only 2 minutes later when Hammitt would land a nice shot from Campbell and AK (there he is again). The game looked to be a long grind. The Blues would score again at the five minute mark of the first then they would land an absolute killer with seconds left in the period. It was a long shot that took an odd hop and beat Matt.

It was tough because now we were down by two and facing an uphill climb. With all truth the Gold kept after it, but just couldn't seem to get much going. The second played out nearly to a draw until the Blues would slip another kill shot goal in right in the closing seconds of the period.

That would make it 4-1 and the third looked even more uphill than it had before.

There was plenty of Beercan pride on display, but not even close to enough Beercan finish that could help the Gold climb back into the game. The third would pass quietly without even a penalty to mix it up. The game would end, with a bummer 4-1.
Hopefully this one will be the last of the doubleheader nights for a while... and hopefully the blogger can keep up with the team so he doesn't have to go back and try to remember the games from weeks ago.
Thanks for hanging in there constant reader, I appreciate it. I'll try to keep up.

Injury Update

Got this email from Greg James:

I HAD A HOWARD HEPPELMANN SIGHTING!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I’VE HEARD THAT IS EVEN MORE RARE THAN SASQUACH SIGHTINGS…
He looks good. Shook off the crutches (although I think he threw them aside when he saw me up ahead in the office cafeteria…). He’s wearing a straight brace and rehab starts next week. He’s remains confident that he’ll come out of retirement – for the second time -- in February. Sweet.
Howard may become the only Schlidaveur player to ever be awarded the prestigious “most improved player” award TWICE in 6 months…

Howard's Response:
"Greg, my conscious will not allow me to accept the “most improved player” award, at least not for round one. It’s sort of like starting a business and claiming “fastest growing company” because revenues grew from $1 to $1,000. The numbers just aren’t meaningful. However, I’ll throw my hat in for round 2. In the meantime, good luck guys!"
Good news Howard. Hope you heal fast and we look forward to having you back on the ice.

In other injury news the Schlidaveurs welcome back Chris Fosdick from his horrific broken arm last spring.
Chris stopped by Chez Blogger to pick up the remains of his old Beercan collection and we found a gem right on top.
Nice to have Chris back on the wing moving those big gangly limbs.

Time to catch up.... *EDITED*

Hey Team.

The Blogger apologises for not updating in so long... that damndable work thing just keeps getting in the way. I will have some game stories up later today or by tomorrow sometime to let you know how we are doing. We've had a tough stretch of double game nights that really makes it tough for our system to work its magic. Next week is no exception given that we will have two at Dedham on Monday night. More on that later.

Looking in the rearview mirror the news is good and bad.

I've added these posts so I've now linked them in here for your convenience...

Last monday we beat the Tigers farily handily with a good lineup.
Thursday night was a double at U-Ass that turned out to be just an awful night at the rink. A 2-1 loss to the CH Terriers which was a shame given that we played the entire game in their end... then followed by a simple drubbing 6-2 at the hands of the Scapegoats.

This week the news was a little better as we tied (should have won...) the Predators 3-3, again after spending most of the night in their end, then a big win 4-0 over the Lobsters in the nightcap. I will have game stories on both all of these coming up in the next day or so.

It also needs to be noted that Management has spawned again... that's right CEO Matt Kilroy and his lovely wife Kerry were joined by little baby Laura Kathrine Kilroy on Saturday night. All concerned are resting and a happy at the Kilroy homestead. Big congrats and love from all the 'daveurs to Matt, Kerry, Herbie and little Laura.

Ok... back to work... more later... really... i promise... no... really.

Schlitz tie frustrating Predators

Schlitz (3) vs Predators
Monday October 19th
UMass 7:00pm

3-3 Tie

Another week, another double header matchup at the Prison by the Bay. This was thankfully the last double pair of games in the early going... the blogger is knocking on wood... and hopefully we wont have any more games scheduled at this lovely venue. From paying to park, to it being close to the arctic circle, but yet still in Boston, to the lack of lockerooms or space to change in general... ahh it just goes on and on.
The Suds were once again thin as a result of the doubleheader but put a good crew out there. Here's your roster. We were backed by Mark Marrese who was a fill in for both squads on this night. We needed Mark because Matt and Kerry had their second child on Saturday night, the lovely Laura Katherine Kilroy.
The rest of the lineup was this.
Matvey
Nelson
Jeff
Valenti
Douville
Elliot
Gregson
Herbert
Goodwin
Baker

Their keeper was a huge dude with a red helmet, not their regular guy and we couldn't get a thing by him. The guy just gobbled everything up. My recollection being far *ahem* from perfect but I think we spent the whole night in their zone. Remember we were fresh because this was still only the first game of the night.
We matchup pretty well with the Predators and the game was a good skate. Again the Suds were able to take the game right to the opponent and get groups of chances after sometimes multiple passes.

I know that Nelson would lead off the scoring, unassisted and put the 'Cans out in front early. The Predators would counter though and score two decent goals of their own before the first period was out.

The second period would see Mike "Goody" Goodwin score a nice goal on a feed from Matt Elliot. Steve Baker would take a penalty for slashing, and Dan DWH Herbert would go for a hook also during the second.

The game would go to the third 2-2 . I'm pretty sure that the Predators scored next and we were down for a few minutes but I really dont remember. Anyone that does remember please, please comment on the post and let us all know how it turned out.

I do know that Goody would score again, this time from DWH and the tie would be salvaged from a game that really we felt like we should have won going away. I can't stress enough how well the Predator keeper played.
For his part Mark did a nice job filling in and we were very glad to have him.
Tie... still no game stars.

So again this game led directly into the nightcap, featured in the next post...

Dead in Yellow cook the Lobsters

Cadavers (4) vs Lobsters
Monday October 19th
UMass 8:10pm

4-0 Win.

Nightcap game that was played right after the Suds tie with the Predators. Again there was as fair amount of double game skating for a lot of the guys. This resulted in a full bench, and Jeff rotated in occasionally with the D and a shift or two on offense for Kevin Parker when he had the chance... otherwise he just wheezed from behind the bench squawking out line changes.

Here's what the roster looked like.
Roman
Matvey
Jeff
KenMitch
Greg James
Moorachian
Valenti
Reynolds
Douville
Elliot
Gregson
Herbert
Goodwin
Parker

Again... please comment if you recall something from this game as it was so long ago now I've surely got a slim chance of remembering all the circumstances.

This time out the Lobsters did not have all of the new talent we saw during last season. The Red was decidedly more down to earth and looked a lot like the squad we were used to seeing. The Cads wore the Schlitz shirts from the game before and were the Dead in Yellow again.
The Zombies took the play and carried it for the whole night. The Lobsters would get a few chances but they would be squashed pretty well and Mark Marrese would play great in net the whole game.
According to the scoresheet there was only one penalty, Valenti in the first period for a hold. No other penalties in the game.

The goals went like this.
Goody unassisted
George from Steve Baker
KenMitch Goldenberg unassisted.
Baker from George
One story the Blogger can relate is a humorous exchange between Jeff who was behind the bench and George who was taking regular shifts. Jeff sugested lines for the penalty kill at one point, the skaters were on the way to the faceoff and George went nuts saying they had to change or the wrong defensemen... something like that. Its pretty funny when two Blow-hards and I do mean Blow-hards argue over lines like its the end of the world. Both realized the situation and the arguement was foolish and irrelevant in moments and things went back to normal. There was no shortage of snickers and grins as the profanity flew for a moment.
Parker was overheard after things got quiet.... "Me likey angry Jeff... " ... more snickers....
... for the record there were no hard feelings on either side...

A nice way to end the night and finally we get a win at the House of Horrors. Thankfully this was the last UMass date on the early season schedule and we can only hope it doesn't pop up again later in the year.

Zombies fall to Terriers

Cadavers (3) VS CH Terriers
Thursday October 15th
UMass 8:10pm

2-1 Loss

First of a series of double header stretches at the Prison by the Bay no less. The league has been banging the old rink out getting as many games in as possible and this doubleheader was the middle of a 5 game stretch for us.

The dreaded doubleheader wreaks havoc with our two team system as it requires the whole roster for the same evening and we dont even get the benefit of playing each other. What this resulted in has been thinner roster and many players doubling up. Not necessarily a good formula for success for us.

Back to the game at hand this was an early tilt against the CH Terriers who have a good club but had a thin bench for this game.
They had a good goaltender also and that figured big in the game. The Cads dressed the follwing lineup.

Brian Long arm of the Law Carey in Net
Defensemen were George, Jeff, Steve Baker, and DWH
Offense featured: Mike Daley, iJosh, Nelson, Larry, Neil, Gregson, and Dr. Pounds.

I'm sorry but at this point the game was so long ago I can't recall the lines... please comment on the post to set me straight or if you remember anything at all about the game.
I know it was a tight, tight game and the Red took it right to the Terriers and spent a lot of time in their end. We had a nice group of players and played pretty well. The Red felt pretty good as the chances mounted but also an ominous feeling as the keeper looked stronger and stronger as the game went on.

As I recall the Terriers scored on a longer shot close to the end of the first period. Despite playing pretty well and getting lots of chances the Zombies were down.

Leave it to Nelson to come through with a tough goal, a very nice sharp pass and shoot from Steve Baker that tied the game up a few minutes into the second. The game stayed tied for a long time. Red continued to pile up the chances but nothing on the scoreboard to show for it.
Then... as you can imagine... the other shoe dropped and the Terriers scored again... the blogger can't recall the circumstances. Again... please comment.... at any rate we went into the end of the game down 2-1 despite
having shots, just no finish.

There was a scuffle in our own end as we went into the final 5 or 6 minutes and Larry was quickly involved in a full blown scuffle wrestling around with one of the Terriers. Major 5 min for fighting... racking up the Campbell award points... and Steve Baker was chucked for being 3rd man in to boot.
Far from covering ourselves in glory the game would end with Team Zombie still down a goal and more than a little disheartened. Of course Larry and Steve were able to play again in 5 minutes...

See the next post for what happened next....because we played immediatly afterward.

Suds crushed by 'goats in nightcap

Schlitz (2) vs Scapegoats
Thursday October 15th
UMass 9:20pm

6-2 loss

Ok so as time wind down in the Zombie 2-1 loss to the Terriers Marc Valenti and Ken AK Douville would show up for this, the late game. Mike Campbell had arrived during the first game as well so couldnt really be considered "fresh". Those two guys would represent the entire fresh leg contingent for the late game. Not a good sign. Especially since we faced a well manned and reasonably talented Scapegoats squad that was completely fresh.

Things didn't look great from the start for Team Beercan. The Goats were after it and scored early in the first to get on top right away. We would be in penalty trouble from the start as AK would check himself out for "unsportsmanlike conduct" whatever that was... probably talking. I can't for the life of me recall how the scoring went in this one as it was fairly a blur.

I do know that Mike Daley would score from iJosh, and Nelson would score from Larry but that one was close to the end. In between the goats would rack up a bunch of goals, five in addition to the one they opened with to lead the game most of the way 6-1. This one was really never close.
Other penalty action included Valenti going fo a high stick, George for a hook, and Campbell for a trip.

We also were able to reaquaint ourselves with Katie the scorekeeper who had some drama or other going on in her life. Thankfully Larry didn't hurl any obscenities at her and didn't offer to insert anything into... well you get what I mean.

This game sucked. We got our asses handed to us after playing a tight game right before. Everyone was exhausted and the fact that the whole thing took place at U Mass just added to the level of suckatude.
Bleh.

Zombies toast Tigers!

Cadavers (2) vs Tigers
Monday October 12th
Dedham 10:10pm

The season having opened with a Schlidaveur the week before this was the first game of the season against regular opponents for Team Zombie and the first of a long string of games at the House of Horrors... Prison by the Bay... The Crumbling Relic... The... well you get the idea... U Ass.

This dump is never a favorite hockey or vacation destination by skaters in the league, this gem seems to keep popping up again from time to time on the schedule. Several playoff games were scheduled there and the early season would see its fair share of dates at the Ass.
Fear not fellow 'daveurs, Management is on the case and all emails have been duly considered by the League office and we can only hope for a few less dates down the road. Until then, get your six bucks and your long underwear and enjoy the magic of the UMass
rink.
Tigers wore red so Dead skated as Yellow.

The blogger didn't attend but there are some great guest blog accounts of the game so we will hand it right over to them.
Here is Matvey with a nice recap:
Good game, I think Tigers did not have their regular goalie, but nevertheless we provided plenty of chances so even with a better goalie we'd probably scored 6 goals.

Nice couple of shots from Valenti, not the hardest, but right on goal and low, they were deflected for 2 goals.
We scored 5 on 3- Steve from me (don't remember if we had another assist).
Great prolonged abscence of Campbell, 3 penalties in a row with a small break between 1st and others.
I also had another assist on Daley's goal- got the puck to the point, Mike took a shot and scored.
Good hustle from everyone, putting a lot more presure than usual on defensively minded Tigers. - Matvey
Thanks Matvey. Now here is Mike Campbell with a short recap of his own:
Me, George, Reynolds and Valenti on D. Lizzy in Net.

GREAT game. Back and forth, no one ever had more than a two goal lead. Very nice to have Goody, Daley and baker all out there. Capraro was tenacious as always. Big Dan worked his ass off. Had a pretty good game.

Here is Marc Valenti with the score-sheet and some highlights in a very nice summary... including the roster.
Roman
Matvey

Highlights:
Team played well, we had some issues in the backchecking dept., but we made up for it in the offense.
Daley had a great breakaway
Campbell began the foundation for “The Campbell Award”
It helped that we had a full bench against these guys, 3 lines and 2 sets of D
Chris played very well on his injury rebound

Thanks Marc. Great job with the stats.
This game did indeed mark the return of an injured 'daveur as Chris Fosdick would play his first game since breaking his arm a way back in the spring. Nice to hear that the old dog hasnt forgotten how to play, and it will be nice to have him back in the lineup on a regular basis.

Sounds like Campbell had some of his usual run ins with the Zeebras...

DiLoreto, David wrote: Campbell was just regaling me with stories of how he has picked up this season right where he left off… classic.

Greg: You forgot to mention that these penalties were called right after he came out of the box. A Boch Ice center classic

DiLo: Cross check AND a trip at the same time? That easily trumps this wimpy goal as far as talent and drive goes…

Mike: Yeah, good point... Zero to three in no time at all... Never got back to the bench after my first call...

Zombies win season opener shutoutdaveur!

Schlitz (1) vs Cadavers(1)
Monday October 5
Bavis Arena 10:40pm

Cadavers 3
Schlitz 0

Well, so much for the off season.
This is what happens when you go deep into the playoffs… the next season starts the next week. So the assembled ‘Daveurs kicked off the Winter 2010 season with a very well balanced Schlidaveur event at the Bavis Arena in Rockland last night.
The Hockey Gods, with some help from management, set out a nice pair of rosters with the available talent for an early in the week late night tilt. Even though we’ve been playing a lot lately, this one really did feel like the beginning of the season with a bunch of friendly faces making a return to the ‘daveur ranks.
It was great to see a bunch of guys back in the Red and Gold last night. Mike Daley, Dan Gregson, Matt Elliot, Marc Valenti, and Dan Herbert all rejoined the team after a summer lay off and it was nice to have everyone back.
Here is the breakdown of the rosters.
Schlitz/Gold
Lizzy in Net
D: Valenti, Reynolds, Herbert
O1: Bell, Baker, and Shah
O2: Elliot, Hammitt, and Underhill

Cadavers/Red
Kilroy in Net
D: Campbell, Greg, and Jeff
O1: Nelson, Daley, and Parker
O2: Gregson, Dr.Pounds, and Capraro

Despite being a late game there were plenty off late arrivals, including Lizzy who was nice enough to have someone fill in for her as scorekeeper over at the other Rockland rink so she could make it for the game. Someone was injured in the game before and that gave us a few extra minutes.
Everyone made it out to the ice and the game got underway with just a smattering of smack talk between the rosters. Lots of chatting in the warm ups with guys catching up with the guys back from summer vacation.
The game settled in and the two teams started taking shots at each other. In general the play was clean and competitive, and both goalies warmed to the task as they both saw early action.
The Dead in Red would take the momentum in the early going and would generate a handful of chances right away. It was about 6 or 7 minutes into the game when they would get their first breakthrough. Pushing the puck up the right side and through the neutral zone, Mike Campbell would find Nelson at the offensive blue line. Nelson took the puck low and made a beauty of a pass back to the big D man who went to the slot and popped it home for the early lead. Campbell better be careful he is setting an expectation for excellence with all the goal scorers moves he’s had lately. The Red would hold the momentum and would get more chances but Lizzy and the Gold D would turn them away and the game would settle into a good back and forth at 1-0.

The second period was all back and forth but no blood either way. Also notable was that there were no penalties… not that there wasn’t contact…there was plenty of that… the items of note were a massive hit that Hammitt placed on Mike Campbell that literally shook the building. Campbell bounced up without so much as a word... Hammitt approached Campbell warily at the end of the game... kind of like when the lion tamer brings the big ol' steak in to see his friend... it was all good. The other item was Larry pulling a Roman. By this I mean that Larry headmaned the puck into the Red zone, thought about passing, made a move to avoid traffic, thought about passing again, made another move (now on far side of zone) thought about passing again, and then... he turned it over at the top of the zone and the play went up ice the other way. Jeff was going to call him Roman but was too busy sucking his lung back into his chest.

The third was really more of the same. Great stops by both keepers. Great work by both team's defence to work the play away from the slot. The third started with the Red down. Pete Capraro had taken the game's only penalty just before the end of the second and there was still well more than a minute to go when play began. A big shout out to Nelson and Parker for what could be the finest penalty kill I've seen in some time. The work was unbelievable. Both guys got back, then pressed forward and kept the Gold bottled up in their own end the whole time. It was really some nice work there.

We come to the end. With about 6 or 7 minutes left Mike Daley would make a terrific rush up the right side for the Red. Weaving in and out of players like so many pylons he wound his way to the slot and deposited a neat shot that went in and gave the Red the insurance goal they needed. The play was very similar to the "Russian Lullaby" also made famous by Roman. It kind of lulled everyone into a trance as he skated around then... bang. Goal.
The Gold would keep on coming and would force the play in the Red end for most of the rest of the way. This included a mad scramble in front of Matt that saw bodies flying and the puck resting right ON the goaline. Jeff was able to flip it out but not after it sat there for a full 2 seconds (that seemed much longer). On another occasion as time ran out Neil tried to stuff a shot between Matts pads as he stood right in front of him but the CEO BMF was having none of it.
The Gold pulled Lizzy and got a few more chances but it just wasn't going to happen. Greg James had a terrific takeaway with about 30 seconds to go, and he spun around and whipped the puck down ice. Greg screamed "please go in!" and it did. Game over 3-0 Cadavers. Winter season underway. Great work by everyone involved.
Game Stars
3rd Star: Nelson. An assist on Campbells goal and just tremendous work all night.
2nd Star: The Red D. James, Fosdick, and Campbell kicked ass and won battles all night.
1st Star: We're going to have to come up with a new nickname for him if he keeps winning first star like this. Mad Matt Kilroy pitches a shutout in the opener and gives his team the first 'daveur win of the season. Nice job.
4th Period awards to Greg James and Dr. Pounds for bringing cold tasty beverages.
Also to Kilroy for the peelout that left us all in stitches for minutes afterward.

Bonus comments here from Lizzy here as she chimed in this morning via email.
Here's Lizzy:
"I would like to personally welcome back Mark Valenti, he saved two goals from going in the net and he played well for someone who gets his equipment professionally cleaned.
*cough* pussy... Its nice to know when he retires/gets cut form the cadavers he will fit right in with the lobsters. As a matter of fact, I hear they will be holding tryouts this week, maybe Mark and Larry can go in that cute little BMW of theirs...
Its nice to finally have someone back who speaks as eloquently as me though.
thank you!!"
No no Liz. Thank YOU. Great game and a really good playoff run these past few weeks.

Welcome back everyone. Its nice to see you all. Check your email for rosters later in the week.
