Schlitz win Canuck Division championship.

Yes patient reader of the blog... there is a bright and shiny new addition to the trophy case over here at the Corporate Offices of Schlidaveur International. A spanking fresh Summer League Championship Trophy earned by the boys in Gold last night against the Scapegoats at Matthew's Arena. Yes if you look closely the Schlitz is written in sharpie...but would you want the trophy any other way?
Everyone here at Schlidaveur International should feel the pang of pride today. The hardware that now sparkles in our office was earned by the hard work and grit of all the Schlidaveurs. Everyone had a hand in this, and its a nice reward sometimes after a long season, to come home with some hardware. So, no 'Coon this week. That furry bastard has been sent into exile. For now... the Suds are Champs and this was a Championship season.
We went into the game last night with a strong lineup. We knew we would need a very solid effort to beat the 3-0 Scapegoats who are a good team. Things got off to a slow start the first few shifts but the defence limited the 'goats chances early and the offense soon got underway.
Jim Sullivan (rookie of the year candidate) got the Suds off to a good start with a hard work goal (assist by Larry) that was just the begining of an outstanding performance. This was at least 1/2way through the first period. Not long after Sully struck again this time on a "thing of beauty" deflection that started with a Larry shot and ended slipping through the goalie and into the net for a 2-0 lead. The 'goats were dismayed. Like the last time we played these punks there was plenty of "action" on and away from the puck.
The 'Goats came back and midway through the 2nd period scored on a long shot that took a terrible bounce on OEJ and made it in the net. Gulp. At this point the 'Goats had recruited a teammate that had come to watch but was needed on the bench. He was ready for the start of the third, but by that time the Schlitz were back on the attack.
Late in the second Chris Fosdick moved to the middle with the puck after a face off in thier end and scored on a great shot (with traffic in front) to give the Suds the momentum back.Chris was celebrating his birthday that night, and he would be heard from again.
In the third Sully put the capper on the natural Hat trick with a nice goal from Matvey. Back up to a three goal lead but the 'Goats were playing with urgency. They broke through again to bring the game to 4-2 as we went to the middle of the third.
Typically for the Suds we had a run in or two with the Zebras, that led to a highstick penalty, and then a "too many men" when that penalty was over. The Gold played great on the kill, the defence in particular squashing any 'Goat momentum as they gained the zone. All night the D combos of George and Stephan, and Campbell and James took and gave big hits and never surrendered a solid series of scoring chances for the 'Goats. At the end of the last penalty kill thanks to some excellent (Nelsonesque) hard work cycling by Birthdayboy Chris Fosdick the Suds were able to drive in the stake and seal the deal. Chris worked the puck out to bother Jeff who was camping on the doorstep and made a nice move to score with the defensemen draped all over him. That one was satisfying.
That was how the story went. The Suds ground out the clock and salted away the victory as the minutes ran out. There was even a brief trophy presentation from the Zebras, and as you can see T-shirts too.
All in all this was a great way to end the season. As stated at the top, everyone on the combined roster can share in this championship. Everyone has played wearing the yellow at some point and we've needed everyone to contribute somewhere down the line.
Gamestars
3rd Star: Larry Bell. 2 big assists and he brought it all night. Larry had a slow start this summer coming off a nasty knee injury but more than made up for it with his competitive grit. Wouldn't you know it, he was back in his old digs at the top of the scoreing list by the final buzzer. Great job Larry, nice to have you back.
2nd Star: The D. Mike Campbell and Greg James. George Moorachain and Stephan Wennik. Superb work last night. Physical, smart, aggressive play really helped us get off the ground and stay out of trouble. Nice job gents.
1st Star: Jim Sullivan. A natural Hat trick with 2 in the first period that really set the tone. Jim has had a great season and wont be with us in the winter. We'll miss him but he promises to come back and play in the summer. Great job all year dude. You are welcome any time.

Missing Nelson...

Overheard in the parking lot 1: "Schlitz go to heaven, Goats go to Hell!"

Overheard in the parking lot 2: "Put the 'Coon on vacation."

Overheard in the parking lot 3: "I can't f*cking believe we won! This is awesome."

Nice shirts boys.
