Righty Suds win Awesome Playoff-daveur!

Schlitz 1-1 vs Cadavers 1-1
Thursday September 24
Canton 10:50pm

Suds 5
Cads 3

Final. Overtime. Shootout.

A playoff daveur for the ages saw the Righty Suds win a tense shootout battle to advance to the final game of the 1 loss bracket in the Islanders Division Playoffs. Its been a while since our squads have met in the playoffs given that we've been in separate divisions, but thanks to some resiliant play by both squads earlier in the week this playoff showdown was finally made possible. The assembled daveurs would take to the ice in Canton just before 11pm for some late night action. Here are your rosters.

Schlitz (righties)
Nelson, Neil, Capraro, Parker, George, Ken/Mitch, Dave Di, Chuck, AK, and Greg
Matty CEOBMF in the pipes.

Cadavers (lefties)
Larry, Howard, Steve, Roman, Matvey, iJosh, Scott, Mark, Campbell, Jeff, and Hammitt.
Lizzy in the pipes.
The game was as tight and tense as you would expect in the first period. Both teams would get chances, both goalies would get into the game nicely making solid stops. The Cadavers would actually jump out in front in the early going when iJosh would bury a feed from Roman that would beat Matty and the Red would go up 1-0. This just stoked the fires in the Beercans and they seemed to go a little harder as the period went on.

The teams were definitly going after each other and there was no shortage of incidental or not so incidental contact going on. This would culminate in Hammitt taking a penatly for an open ice take-down of George... not his first infraction but the first one that gave him the gate. This came just at the end of the period.
The Zebras would have a quick word with the benches during the intermission basically saying Hammitt needed to be cool and we all needed to be quiet, and just play the game. Advice noted... not necessarily heeded.. the game would go to the second... 1-0 Red.

The Second would see a significant change in the game when Chuck Slate would tie the game just under the 15 minute mark on a helper from point man Greg James. The game tied and fiesty Mark Reynolds would go off at 12:42 and as the ensuing power play wound down Chuck would score again, this time from Dave Diloretto. This put the Gold on top with 10:40 in the second and clearly the Red were back on their heels. It wasn't long after that, that the hard working Beercans would get another one. This one credited to Pete Capraro but all I remember is Nelson practically standing on top of Lizzy and pleading with the ref that the puck had crossed the line during the melee in front. Red defender Mike Campbell after the game would confirm that it was a goal and that's how the Zebra's took it, and with 8 minutes left in the second it was 3-1 Gold.

The Gold would then take a pair of calls before the end of the period, with Nelson going for a hook at 5:39 and Pete going for an Unsportsmanlike at 4:16... I dont remember what Pete did but it must have been good. Anyway 3-1 Gold end of two.
The Third would be no less exciting and tightly played than the first two periods, and again the game would take a dramatic change. Mike Campbell would take a call at 13:19 that the Red would successfully kill off. Just after the kill, Steve Baker would connect on a beautiful shot that came from now point man Mike Hammitt. (it should be noted Hammitt did a good job staying in the game after his first period bumper pool). This came at ten and a half minutes to play.
Campbell would go one more time to the box at the 8 minute mark but again the Red would do a nice job killing the penalty and would again use the kill to maintain, even gather momentum.
The Red, down a goal, would press the play as the game entered the final five minutes.
Steve Baker, you may recall if you've played with him, has a wicked slapshot. He would put it on display as he would take a pass from Matvey down low on the goal line and would RIFLE a shot at an oblique angle that went like a laser into the net with exactly 2 minutes to play.
Tie game.
The last two minutes would see both teams in a frenzy to make something happen... but nothing did. The game would go to overtime. The five minute overtime would see some great chances from both clubs, in particular the blogger remembers a great chance that iJosh just couldnt get the handle on. Both keepers played extremely well in the overtime making critical stops on quality shots. Alas... there would be no blood in the short overtime period and the game would have to be decided on Penatly shots.

Both teams picked 5 shooters, and the Red went first. Larry Bell wound up and laid a fairly weak offering into the pads of Matty. The Gold would send Dave Diloretto down who would score on Lizzy and the Gold were up 4-3. The next shooter for the Red was Jeff Fosdick who offered an equally weak attempt that Matty would snuff out without any trouble. Things weren't looking good for Team Zombie.
Neil Shah was up next and would have no trouble buring his effort and the Gold were up 5-3. Steve Baker would take the next shot for Red and Matt once again would have none of it and turned aside the attempt. Kevin Parker would go next for Gold and Lizzy would make a nice stop to hold back the Beercan tide.

Now in a score or lose situation Mark Reynolds would try out his luck on Matt. The shot was good but Matt was just not to be denied and as he turned away Mark's chance he was mobbed by his Gold teammates who celebrated a very hard fought win.
The Gold would now get a chance to play the Last Call on Monday night for a chance to play for the title. A nice little run the Schlitz have had in these playoffs, which has been a nice end to a kind of so-so season.
Game Stars:
3rd Star: Steve "slapshot" Baker who was all over the place and did a great job generating the offence the Red needed to stay in the game.
2nd Star: Chuck "2 goal" Slate for a great effort and nice finish to help his team to victory. Good work.
1st Star: Who else can it be but the Shootout King. CEOBMF, Don't bring that weak shtuff here, Matt Kilroy. A great performance, particualarly in OT and the shootout to bring home a nice victory for the Gold. Great work.

Shock and Tigers beat Daveurs to open Playoffs

Schlitz vs Shock
Monday September 14
Bavis 9:30 pm

Cadavers vs Tigers
Monday September 14
Bavis 10:40pm

Monday night saw both teams in action as the summer playoffs began. Both games were very close, in fact both games were tied 1-1 as the the game went into its final minute. Both games saw a great and sincere effort by the assembled ‘daveurs, and yes… both games resulted in heartache for our beloved Suds and Zombies as both teams would lose and be exiled to play in the “losers” bracket starting next Monday night… when both teams again play on the same night.

These same night games are killers for us, even with the expanded rosters because anyone that can’t make it… can’t make both games. We were very thin for Monday night’s playoff games but, being the good do-bees that we are, no extra subs were called in to fill in the gaps as these are the playoffs, and all players had to have at least 5 games service to be eligible to play.
The first game saw the Schlitz, playing as the 6 seed meeting the Shock who were the 3 seed for the division. The Shock are very similar to us and we’ve had some decent results playing them in the past. This game would show that we could certainly run with them, and clearly the Suds had every opportunity to take the game… but the Shock would have something to say about it.
Here’s your early game roster.
Matt CEO/BMF in net.
D1: Dave Di, Kevin Parker
D2: Steve Baker, Jeff
O1: Capraro, Shah, and Slate
O2: Sharfman, Jasse, iJosh and KenMitch.

The game would be very even and there were good chances at both ends as the play got going. The Shock goaltender would have a terrific night turning away plenty of rubber… only to be matched by Matt in our end who again had a very solid performance in the pipes. No blood … or score after the first period. The Shock would take a penalty in the first but no luck on the PP.

The second would only be more of the same as the forwards would get plenty of chances, just none that found their way in, and the Gold played solid on D.

The game would go to the third… at this point with regular updates from the zeebras on the score of the Patriots game that was going on… and finally there would be some scoring.

About halfway through the third the Gold would have a breakdown int their own end and the Shock would jump on it and finally get one past Matty for a 1-0 lead. True to Beercan pride the Gold would knuckle up and get one right back. This one would be a textbook hard work goal that went from Steve Baker on the point, down to Nelson who would muck it out into a chance and Dr. Jasse would provide the finish to tie the game up 1-1.

Down the stretch we all came, Dave Di and Steve taking some chances, Kilroy making great stops, all kinds of good things happening for the Gold in a very tight game.

Then just under a minute the Shock would unleash their best defenseman… a number 43 who would go end to end, turn our D and bury one past Matt at the 40 second mark. Interesting that as I go back an look at the roster on the score sheet there is no number 43.. but what can you do? The Shock had taken it to us, and despite pulling Matt the Gold were unable to answer in the time remaining. The Shock would pot an empty netter at about 20/-15 seconds and that made it 3-1. The little bastards would throw another one at the net as time expired and it would go making it an unnecessary 4-1 and that was that.

A tough game for the Gold given how close and how many opportunities there were to be had. Once again a beatable team slips past us, just at the last minute.

The mood postgame was fairly somber and it didn’t help that Management was asking for players to double up as the roster was VERY thin for the nightcap against the Tigers, who you know were going to be ready for the playoffs.

The Cadavers would dress in Yellow, as we always do when playing El Tigre and despite the confusion of the scorekeeper and Zeebs, managed to field a full 13 for the game.
Here is your Zombie lineup.
Lizzy in Net
D1: Steve, Kevin
D2: Mark Reynolds, Jeff
Offense: Dr. Pounds, Howard, Roman and Matvey were joined by returning skaters, Jasse, Nelson, iJosh, Neil, and Chuck Slate

Major kudos have to go out to the guys that doubled up right off the bat. Thanks to everyone who was willing to brave the stiffness and soreness that was sure to come the next day from a double game skate

The Golden Zombies, despite fielding such a tired team played great against the Tigers. This game looked like a carbon copy of the first game through the whole first period. Great chances for the Gold, great goalie play by the opponents keeper, and good play on our own end. Lizzy made some great stops and the Gold got after everything the Tigers threw at us. Just before the end of the first the Tigers would finally get one and would go up 1-0.

The Gold would answer quickly, just like in the first game and it wasn’t many minutes into the second when Roman would take a feed from Mark Reynolds and shot one that was deflected, then went end over end in a perfect arc right into the net to the amazement of the Tigers and our bench. Just like Roman planned it.

The Tigers had taken a penalty in the first, and Chuck took one for the Zombies also. The second would see Reynolds go for a check but no blood on the power play.

Again a 1-1 game into the end of the third. Great chances all over the place. I’m sure the blogger is leaving out many interesting opportunities but given that he skated twice… just can’t recall them right now. Please comment if you know I’m leaving something out.

Down to the final minute we go. No goals but a very interesting call came with just 25 seconds left. On the far boards Steve would tangle with one of the big Tiger forwards and both would fall as the Tiger held his stick. The Zeebra would call STEVE and give the Tigers a power play for the final seconds of the game.

Thankfully the RedGold would kill the penalty, in regulation and into the overtime period, but got no significant boost form the kill. The Tigers would be able to hold it in our end as the time went below 2 minutes and then a shot from the point would receive a perfect deflection on its way and went in to seal the deal for the Tigers.

sigh.

Another just brutal game to lose, this time in Overtime against a team we could not only run with, but had every opportunity to beat. There were good portions of the game when we took the play right to them, but their keeper kept coming up with great stops.

Suds and Blues Battle to a draw

Schlitz (14) vs Blues
Wednesday August 19
Quincy 7:00pm
4-4 Tie

A hot night by the swap gave a steamy backdrop to a classic back and forth contest with longtime rival the Blues that appropriately ended in a draw. How many of these games have we played against these guys? If only the Schlidaveur International Statistics Division hadn't become a ressesion casualty... I could tell you. I could tell you how many back and forth up a goal, down a goal, games we've engaged in with these guys that we are so evenly matched with. This was just the most recent in the long string.

The game was an early start but we had no trouble turning out a strong eleven for the contest, led by the Manager of the Pipes and Pads CEO/BMF Matt Kilroy. The rest of the crew was:
D1 Dave Di;Jeff
D2 Mark R; Steve Baker
O1 Dr. Jasse, iJosh and A.K. Douville
O2 Roman, Neil "R.O.Y." Shah, Matvey and Howard Heppelman

There was eager anticipation in the pregame room... even some "natural" defenseman talk... but the early going didn't look very pretty. Mainly the fact that the Gold had a some difficulty with getting 5 guys on the ice for the faceoff. We managed to start the game and stay out of our own way for the first few minutes then settled into the rythem of the game. It was clear we would get our chances, and with some effort we could handle what they had. On the flipside, we couldn't be 1. Stupid or 2. Lazy or we would pay.

We did indeed pay as the Blues would strike first just under 13:00 in the first. A classic breakdown in our own end and a good bang bang play from #35 on the Blues who buried it.
The Suds would rally a bit and hold it together which was nice to see. AK would keep his cool in an early scuffle with a Blue that resulted in a power play just under the 10 minute mark of the first. The Gold would build some momentum and later in the period would finaly break through. Dave Diloretto would make a nice interception on a pass with help from Jasse and would bury his chance to tie the game. Dave played great, as he's done all season and was a truly stabilizing force on D all night, and then jumping up into the play to create shots on offence. The first would end 1-1.
The Gold would continue the momentum into the second and Mike Jasse would land a rebound that came in from Dave at the point and Neil down in front and would result in the games first lead for the Suds courtesy of the Good Doctor.
Given the game and the up and down theme you know what comes next.... The Gold would give one back after a classic breakdown in our own end. The puck would go "round the world" in our own end with just about everyone on the ice "almost" getting there to touch/challenge their guy or the puck. The result? Pass, pass, pass, shoot, tie game, 8:34 left in the second. Then the Gold would continue the slide with Zebra trouble. Howard would go for a slash at 7:17. Mark would go for a hold at 5:20, and to close the period out Matvey would go with :25 remaining in the second, and a good string of penalty kill minutes in the books by the suds. After 2... 2-2.

During the second intermission there was lots of "come on... we're right there...", and "just a little more effort" and the boys felt tired... in the game... able to win it... but tired and trying to psyche up for the stretch. It was there. The Blues had their regular crew, 35 was back in form after missing a few of our matches, but more importantly they didn't have the second Robbins... the young one with the red pants that has troubled us so. The game was there for the taking... but we'd have to take it. The Blues for sure wouldn't give it to us.

With that in mind the Gold applied themselves to the task with all they had. There were lots of fans for the game. Matvey and Jasse had wife and child on site, AK had some friends and there were a bunch of folks fo the Blues. The game would look like it was going to go the Gold's way when we got a break about 5 minutes in. AK would make terrific break up and created his own breakaway just outside the opposing blue line. AK would keep ahead of the D and make a nice drawn out move that finished beautifully... Suds up 3-2.
It was less than 4 minutes playing time later that we were unable to keep the wheels from falling off the cart with anohter Zebrapocalypse. Matvey would go for a "body check"(iffy), then with the delayed penalty coming Neil would get called for a "Trip" and both would go at 8:08. Neil had made a play on the forward in a strong backcheck and dove hitting the puck first but dropping the man. Bang, bang. Down 5-3. It only took the blues 41 seconds to tie the game... and really it was less than that.
With time short the Suds tried to grind it out, but somehow it was slipping away. The worse came under 2 minutes left when the Blues would score again, on another weak breakdown to go ahead 4-3. It had all come unravelled for the Gold, but they weren't in the ground yet... and there was still some time on the clock. The Beercans would gain possession and then a faceoff in the Blue end as we came to just over a minute. Dave smartly called for the goalie and we pulled Matt for the extra attacker. iJosh would join Dave and Jeff on D, and I think the Russians and Neil on offense. The Gold would manage to keep the play in, but just barely as time wound down. Neil would gain possesion and take a serpentine trip through the zone, masterfully keeping possesion as Blues flailed at him. He curled at the top of the zone and dished to Jeff, back at the right point and standing RIGHT on the line. The zebra was practically looking over his shoulder as Jeff collected the puck on the line and flung it low and wide on the net. It took a hop and a skip and plunked right into the far corner for a tie. The Blues griped that the puck was out, but the Zeeb stood firm... hell... Jeff had to talk his D partner Dave Di into it after the game but I'm here to tell you... It stayed in the zone. Tie game. 4-4. 30 seconds left. That was it.

Game over, and something slavaged from the night, a tie that felt kinda like a win given how much of a bummer it would have been to lose.
Another classic with the Blues. I'm sure there will be a few more.

Game Stars.... ahh.... maybe not with a tie. Honorable mentions to...

Dave Diloretto for a goal and an assist...and steady D when we needed it.

Neil Shah for two helpers and great work all night.... especially that last shift.

Dr. Jasse for a Goal and an assist... and just bein' the Doctor.

AK for the nice breakaway goal... AND keeping his cool drawing penalites not taking them.

More importantly big ups to the Jasse's and the Nikhamiks for coming out to see the game. Always nice to have some fans... big and small.

All hands on deck for the RightyLeftyDaveur!

Schlitz (11) vs Cadavers (11)
Monday July 20
Canton 9:00pm

4 – 4 Tie

Even handed. Opposite handed. Open handed. Under handed. The night of the hands would have it all. The Righty versus Lefty breakdown was a smash success, even if in interesting or unpredicted ways. This game had a wealth of interesting angles and plays. A very good game. Also easily the most confusing and frustrating game we’ve had in a while. Eveyone played by the management mandated “no set positions”… well everyone except Pete… and the game was a fun experiment for a night.
The idea was to shake things up and get people playing in places they normally wouldn’t. Defensmen playing forward and vice versa. We had regular goaltender Brian Carey skating out with the LeftySuds. They would also feature a Off handed guest appearance by Dan Herbert playing with a wrong handed stick. Yup, DWH was in the house but the only place to play was with the Leftys… so he left his regular stick at home and played a good game… backwards. Here’s the Suds Roster:
Lizzy in net
DWH and Brian, Larry, iJosh, Jeff, Howard, Roman, Steve, Campbell, Jasse, Hammitt, Goody, Dr.Pounds, and Matvey.
The RedRightwingZombies would feature some more visiting teammates from the winter, Dan Gregson and Matt Elliot. CEO Kilroy was between the pipes and was joined in the Red by Dave Di, Blake, George, Greg, KenMitch, Neil, Kevin, Pete, and Chuck.
The game was confusing from the start. We were certain on the Gold side that George would have the Red regimented and prepared with a pregame chalk talk, but we figured we’d counter that with complete disregard for preparation and basically kept saying “yeah, just talk out there… talk to each other”. I don’t really have any defense for this line of thinking but for whatever reason everyone seemed to get with the program and over the boards for both squads.
The game started pretty fast with complete madness on the benches by the third shift. A little sloppy but clearly some chances. The skaters were going to have chances, and there would be strange matchups all over the place. Both goalies made good stops in the early going and the game would start to be “contested”. Mike Jasse and George would get together and exchange some pleasantries. In fact they felt so strongly about it the Zeebs asked them both to take a rest for a few. They weren’t the only Red and Gold shirts doing some mutual roughing and needing separate boxes.
The game would see its first score just moments later when Larry would provide some nice finish on iJosh’s attemept/pass. Gold 1-0 at the 11 minute mark. Things would continue to look good for the LeftySuds as they carried the play for a few minutes and topped it off at 8:30 with a Steve Baker score on a feed from Mike Hammitt. That put the ever dangerous confidence in the Suds and things sort of got rocky immediately afterward.
At about 3 minutes Dave Diloretto would put one past Lizzy to pull back within one. Credit Matty Elliot on the assist on Dave’s goal. The First would end 2-1.

The Red had moved the momentum though and scored moments after the start of the second to tie it up. Neil Shah would provide the talent and Dave the pass. All tied up the game would just be one long chaotic flow for the next 12 minutes of playing time. Somewhere in there Greg James and Brian Carey would get tangled up and there would be some words and feelings expressed. Likewise things were getting interesting in the slot in front of both keepers. Somewhere in that period Jeff and Dave had some moments in front of Kilroy… and I just have to say, next time Mr.Diloretto is going to need to apply for a “hall pass” from Mrs. Blogger if he’s going to be that friendly. It was all good an all in fair play, but I’m here to tell you there was plenty of “fairness” going on out there.

Well, you had to know the Zeebs wouldn’t let it all go forever and the game would take its next turn when Mike Campbell for the Gold would be called for a trip at 3:40. This would be followed five seconds later with a Kevin Parker bid that would end the penalty and put the Red up 3-2. Credit Dave (him again) and Pete on the assists.
Just to make the meltdown complete the gold would again have Zebra trouble when Hammitt would get a whistle for a rough with a minute left in the period. We would hear from Dr. Jasse again who would be called just before the end of time for a slash, interestingly enough on George again. The second period would close out with the Red ahead and the game very much up for grabs.
The third period would open with the Gold still killing a penalty, but they would get themselves under control long enough to get that accomplished. This good fortune gave the Gold a little boost when they would get a bounce about 2 minutes in. Jeff made a long bid and while being chopped down by Pete fumbled a shot at Matt. The shot was so wide it hit Dave who apparently had to be involved in even our scoring and it deflected into the net. That would tie the game, much to Jeff’s surprise and things looked pretty good.
Of course the Red would come right back a minute and a half later and would take the lead right back when Cheatin' Pete Capraro would score on a hard work effort, assisted by Matty E again, and... you guessed it... Dave. This came with 13 and a half left in the game.

The Red would be able to hold that lead for a full 6 minutes of grind time until Larry would take it on himself to change the game again. Larry was working hard all night but on this occasion outdid himself... and everyone else on the ice. SW Lawrence would make a nice move in the offensive zone, would go around a couple guys, through a couple more, then while falling he would get the shot off and bank it into the net for an EPIC game tying goal at 7:33 remaining. Larry clearly laid it out and got what he wanted and everyone took notice. Great work by him.
The rest of the way was full on confusion grind. Thankfully no further penalties for either side. But there was some "rules" infractions. Pete would get some unwanted recognition when he made a not so subtle move to switch with Greg James (so Greg could play D) right before a faceoff. This had the Gold howling and CEO Kilroy scolding his own player. In fairness Pete and Greg switched right back. It wasn't unnoticed however that the Red D had a very familiar look all night. George spend a lot of time at the right D and with time dwindling somehow Dave, George and Greg seemed to be manning the points... I'm just sayin'...

And after the remaining minutes ticked away neither team got much of a chance and we were left with a tidy 4 - 4 tie to end the night.

Game Stars:
3rd Star: Cheatin' Pete Capraro (just kidding...) with a nice goal and an assists. Pete is never short on effort, enthusiasm and strong play. Another good showing... even if the Coon of Shame walked by your truck... twice... slowly...

2nd Star: Larry with a pair of nice goals for the Gold. The game tying goal being the play of the night, and a great effort all the way around for number 16. Way to go.

1st Star: This one could shake the SW rankings to the core. Dave Diloretto with a four point night that really was five if you count the goal they gave to Jeff but went in off of Dave. Three helpers and a goal for himself and a certain presence on the ice. You know when he's out there and better be paying attention. Great work Dave... looking to wrap up that Rookie of the Year award early this year.
Honorable Mention: Matt Elliot with a pair of assists on the night. Always nice to see some of our winter friends. Same can be said for Dan Gregson who voiced his regret at not playing for the summer while holding a very nice cold BL Limey in one hand and a cigar in the other during the fourth period.

Speaking of the 4th period. Another epic Daveur 4th period to be sure. First of The CEO BMF comes up with the 6 foot Italian Sub of DOOM for the occasion. Just for statistical accuracy the blogger needs to point out that the 6 foot sub REMAINS UNDEFEATED. That's right... when I left at somewhere close to 11:35 there was easily a foot and a half remaining. I can only assume the Sandwich has taken us once again.

The Sandwich was probably aided by the first rate contributions of Miran James (and thanks to Greg for bringing it) who continues to be a 4th period star weather she shows or not. This evening was a fabulous tray of beef and veggie sushi accompanied by a delicious tray of cookies. Major thanks and appreciation to our friend Miran for making our festivities so civilized.
Beer was well handled by a bunch of folks, Howard brought some vintage Schlitz. Campbell had a case of "dont leave home without them" Limeys. I think Gregson or Elliot brought some Harpoon... sorry if i dont get everyone. There was plenty and it was good. Real good.

Another great night in the warmth of the parking lot. Something about the post game brew and chow on a summer night after a tough game. Hanging with our hockey friends in the post game glow. That something ladies and gentlemen... is why we do this. I hope you all enjoyed your hangovers yesterday... I'm sure it was worth it.

Suds Down D-Minus! ...last week.

Schlitz (5) vs D-Minus
Thursday June 11
Canton, 7:00pm

7-2 Win!

Wow team... this one is already a week old and I dont have any stories to tell on this one, but it looks like it was a good night at the rink. Abley backstopped by CEO BMF Mad Matt Kilroy the Suds put the Whoop on the newbies of the division with a great 7-2 win.

All I can tell you is what has been reported from the scoresheet. Namely that Larry had 2 goals and 2 assists on the night... nice to see him returning to his SW ways, Nelson had a Hat Trick (like a Timex...)and Pete Capraro with a goal and 2 helpers to round out the night. Newcomer Steve Baker potted 2 goals as well, already showing that this season's rookie of the year race is going to be one to watch.

Great job to everyone... and anyone willing to comment or give us a tale or two please feel free. In the absence of that... here are the stats.

Baker to Pete 6:33 1st
Larry alone 5:41 1st
Pete to Chuck 1:50 1st
Baker to Larry 15:50 2nd
Larry to Nelson 16:41 3rd

Zombies Sink Sloshed Suds

Cadavers (2) vs Schlitz (2)
Tuesday May 19
Quincy 10:10pm

Cads 4
Suds 2

Another solid competitive game turned out by the assembled 'daveurs, new and veteran, last night in the Q. It always feels like summer hockey when playing in Quincy, and while not yet up to temp... it was true again last night.

There was some congestion on the central artery due to paving so ALL of the North Shore contingent were late arriving at the rink so the early going saw a very thin bench, especially on the Suds side. As the puck was dropped the Suds skated with 5... for the first 7 minutes of the game.

The breathless five were Captain Pete Capraro, John Carey, Neil Shah, Mike "dasvidahnya" Campbell, and Jeff. They did a heroic job keeping the game close until reinforcements came halfway through the period. Matt Kilroy, in net for the Gold played superbly in the early going to keep his team alive, under the red onslaught.
Joining the Golden squad would be Herbert, Daley, Hammitt, Goldenberg, and iJosh. They would be a welcome sight, and just in time to keep the game under control.
The Red side had a bunch of new faces. First Lizzy took the nets in front of Greg James, Stephan, Rookie Dave Dilorenzo, and a guy named Steve who was a friend of Lizzy's. Dave and Steve are your prototypical half/no shield guys and played up to it. They were fronted by a strong group of forwards led by Captain Mark Reynolds, Larry and Chris, with a second line of Kenny Douville, Blake U, and newbie Howard H. You can bet that first line of Larry, Mark and Chris were tough to contain, and as one would expect, they played hard and got great chances all night.

The blogger is winging this one as the scorekeeper was in such a hurry to leave last night that he didn't leave behind a scoresheet. Sooo if things are a little foggy... please set me straight via email or the comments.
[this is not helped by the fact that your’s truly is now trying to finish a week later…sorry readers…]
One thing I do know is the one word that D partner Mike C text'd me at 843pm.
That word was: Cocked
He wasn't kidding. Now, this didn’t worry me. Many a time we’ve seen Mike play his best after… well… after a few. I can even recall a two goal night after a Jasse Margarita Barbecue Fiesta that may go down as one of his best night’s ever. (hockey wise of course…)

The game was pretty competitive throughout. Kudos to the Duxbury Duo for picking such solid squads. Mark Reynold’s Cadavers were very solid and really tried to take advantage in the early going while the Gold was shorthanded.
The Golden five and Matty “Pipes” Kilroy would play great and the game would settle in to a nice back and forth.
The potent Zombie offense would not be held in check forever and it wasn’t long til they got the first tally of the game when Captain Mark Reynolds would spring loose after a couple of sweet passes from Chris and Larry. Mark buried a nice shot that Matty didn’t have much hope on. 1-0 Zombies.
The change in sides didn’t change the momentum as early in the second the Red and Mark would continue to gain. This time some of the Russian pregame factored in as big Mike C would go sprawling across the blueline in an attempt to turn to catch the decptively quick Captain Reynolds who would zip around the defenseman and would walk in alone and bury the breakaway past Matt. Nice finish on that one that has started with a pass from Chris to get going.
So it was 2-0 Red and the gold was certainly feeling the affects of the thin bench in the eaarly game but they certainly weren’t out of it. First of all, any squad that has Mike Daley playing forward, and DWH manning a corner of the D you are going to be in the game. Also there was some new talent with Nei Shah showing some nice work and a good head for the game. He joins an impressive rookie crop this season. Speaking of Neil, he would help pick the Gold up as he would make a really nice wrap around pass to iJosh who would put it past Lizzy to bring the score to 2-1. This came after some good work in general by all of the Gold.
The game stayed close but the Red couldn’t be held down for long. The game went to the third period 2-1 or this happened first…Larry would put one past Kilroy on a feed from both linemates Mark and Chris (told you that group would be potent). Just keep in mind, as Capt. Reynolds reminded me long after, it was a good thing Larry scored this one given that he missed about 4 other really good chances during the night. You could tell he wanted to get one by Matty, finally he did, to give his squad the 2 goal lead back.
So here we are in the thrid. 3-1 Zombies. The Gold would contine to make the game competitive and DWH would show his stuff when a few minutes into the period he would make one of his pattented swooping carries through the neutral zone then slid along the inside of the blue line to get some room then fired a deadly shot that beat Lizzy and kept the Gold in the game 3-2.
To this point the game had really not seen any or many penalties. That all came to an end as the second half of the third period saw a parade to the box for the Gold that would effectively squash their chances in this one. Hammitt, Campbell, then iJosh would all go. There may have been a match somewhere in there but I’m not sure. Then Campbell would give Larry some “love” in the gold zone and would be called for a rough. Of course it did look like Larry went down a bit easy… but you know… they say that about him.
At some point during these penalties Kenny Douville would score on a rebound from a shot by Stephan to put the game out of reach at 4-2. That would close up the night on the Gold but just before the end they’d get another call just … we’ll just cuz the zebras love us. iJosh’s description of this is best:
Greenstein: being crashed into (loosely interpreted as tripping)
He’s right. It looked exaclty like that. Oh well.
Over all very good game and a fun night. Thanks go out to our regular summer guys that came to fill in Daley, DWH, and Stephan. Thanks also to all the new guys for coming along and signing up this season, we look to have improved a little here in the off season and that’s good news for everyone.
The blogger begs your forgiveness for the late post… I’ll try to keep up with these game stories a bit better as the season goes along.
Game Stars:
3rd Star: I'm going with Lizzy. Another terrific peformance here in the early going.
2nd Star: Larry by virtue of the assist, goal and drawn penalty on Campbell.
1st Star: Captain Reynolds. Not only picks well but leads the way with a pair of goals and a helper. Great work all night.

Exciting Duxdaveur Rosters Tonight!

Schlitz (2) vs Cadavers (2)
Tuesday May 19th
Quincy Youth Arena, 10:10pm

Alright, alright, alright. Second game, second 'daveur, second week, ... but a first with an all Duxbury Guest GM pairing. The Dangerous Duxbury Duo of Pete Capraro (Schlitz) and Mark Reynolds (Cads) faced off via conference call this morning at Schlidaveur International HQ. The rosters below are the result of their picks.
You may note that we only list 10 skaters a side... that's because we only have 20 confirmed skaters for tonight. What the blogger means here... is that if you said you're skatin'... show up. We'll need all hands available to make a nice match tonight.

So... as the picks got underway we make one note. Mark deffered the first pick to Pete for saving his kids life, or his life or some such nonesense last weekend... Pete had the good sense to take it rather than go through with the coin toss.
Pete of the Schlitz picked first, and the players are listed in the order selected....ah hell... I'll just put the numbers right on 'em...

See you all tonight in the Q! Remember... talk to your team captain for lines and strategy... for what its worth...
Managment is also taking applications for Guest GM regarding the next 'daveur... not scheduled yet but bound to be soon.

Schlitz (1) vs Cadavers (1)
Monday May 11
Dedham 10:10pm

Cadavers 6
Schlitz 1

A nice way to open up the season last night in Dedham.
A spirited, even if not quite up to tempo, matchup against ourselves with a few new faces to add to the mix. We saw Kilroy’s new goalie gear ensemble, we met 3 new guys who for some reason have elected to play with us (they may be regretful this morning, and in general knocked the rust off, and got back into the rythem of things.
The game rosters broke down like this.
For the Gold Matt played goalie. His D corps were Mike Campbell, Pete Capraro, Greg James, then I think rookie Neil Shah took the last D spot… The forwards were a motley group of grisled vets, Larry, Nelson, Jasse, iJosh, Roman, and another rookie Howard Heppelman (number 22 in your program).
The Dead in Red had our gal Lizzy in the pipes, and was fronted by “subbing” Professor Daley, and Jeff Fosdick, and then Captain George with reluctant blue liner (but doing a great job) Chris Fosdick. The Offense would star Kevin Parker Chuck Slate and Mark Reynolds, and another rookie Mike “Goody” Goodwin (brought by Kevin), would go with Ken Douville and Dr. Pounds.

The game would start out…well, not fast. But pretty even. Good chances at both ends. Both keepers were able to get right into the game and make a few good stops. Lizzy in particular was excellent in the early going. The play shuffled back and forth with niether side gaining much of an advantage.
Late in the first the Dead in Red would finally break the ice and solve Kilroy for the first lead. Scott Pounds would plunk home a rebound from a Chris Fosdick drive and would get the Zombies on the board with just under 2 minutes left. The period would end 1-0.
The second would see more of the back and forth as the Gold organized their late arrivals and really got going trying to bring it to the red. Nelson and Larry are no picnic to defend when they have desire… and they had desire. Lizzy was up to the task again making several nice saves in the first few minutes of the second. Then Roman would grab a rebound and put it past Liz (from Jasse) and the game would be tied 1-1 with 11minutes to go in the Second.
At this point the game would take a dramatic turn. Larry, always the demure and respectfull Lady Byng candidate, would get called for suggesting that the ref should move along and clear the path of the play… and to go do something anatomically impossible. The Zebra would blow the play dead and send Lawrence packing for the sin bin and gave the Zombies a power play.
The Red would take advantage of the opportunity and after a nice cycle in front of Kilroy, Chuck would feed Parker who would get one through to regain the lead. I’m not sure but I think there were a few “thank-you’s” blown over to Larry as he rejoined the Gold. The Zombies weren’t done making their move, and 2 minutes later Jeff would clear up to Scott who would get it to Mike Daley who would finish a nice play and a nice rush with a niffty goal putting the zombies up 3-1. That’s how the second would end.
The third saw a good effort by the Gold but not many results. The Zombies would keep up the hard work of their own and Rookie Goody would show that he could be a valuable pick up for the ‘daveurs as he would score twice. The first from Parker at 10 minutes, and the second from Scott with 5 minutes left. Both shots were pretty deadly, and Matty didn’t have much of a chance on either. That would essentially put the game away as the Gold would continue to move their legs but wouldn’t come up with anything that could get past Lizzy who had another great period gobbling up loose pucks and playing very solid in the nets.
The red would cap it off with under a minute left when Mark Reynolds would finish a play from Daley and Goody that would put a wrap on this one 6-1 Red and the teams would adjourn to the parking lot for the apres skate portion of the evening.
Matty laid out another spectacular 6 foot sub, which would be complimented by Miran’s freakingawesome brownies, and copious amounts of oat sodas brought from a number of people. Kudos to the new guys for hanging out and coming out to play with us for the summer. Big props to rookie Neil Shah who looks like an interesting talent… plus he brought his girlfriend… which is always welcome.

Game Stars

3rd Star: Professor Mike Daley.
Covers ground. Scores goals, gets assists, and generally affects the play every shift he’s on the ice.
2nd Star: Rookie (to us) Mike “Goody” Goodwin. 2 goals and an assist to really seal the game for the Red. Great work, and welcome.
1st Star: Got to be the Gal in the pipes. Fresh off a break from a frustrating winter season, Lizzy turned out a gem last night, jumping on loose pucks, staying square to the play and in general just playing good hockey. Thanks Liz, great work and a well deserved #1 star.

Overheard in the parking lot:
(while watching Campbell demo his snazzy iPhone) “If I had a cock, I’d have a hard on right now.” … I think Jasse lost some beer out his nose on that one…

Good work everyone. Stay tuned for schedule updates.

That's right team. Be there or be square, because the summer season starts tonight and we are kicking it off 'daveur style with a inter-squad battle in Dedham. Yup... bring a beverage (although one of the new guys offered to bring beer... still) and maybe a snack, because word has it that management has a little sumthin sumthin for after the game consumption. That's right, we're going to be partying like a Wookie at the ballpark... wait a second... that doesn't even make sense... never mind.
Its going to be fun... so show up.
