Don't !@#$ with Mr. Zero

Schlitz 1
Tigers 0
Monday September 30, 9:10
at Walter Brown

Long time no blog folks.  After a long summer season of Daveur™ the Schlidaveurs Incorporated returned to the NESHL Ice.  This first non-Daveur game would pit the Golden Beer Cans - donning the new slick unis - against the Tigers.

Early on it did not look good.  Jasse and KenMitch had to bail and Campbell was a no-show.  But that was not the issue.   The big issue was that due to circumstanses beyond our control (Randy having twins and Tom having his fantasy hockey draft) we were scrambling to find a keeper.  Thankfully we would find a fill-in goaltender.  Though one with little experience.

So the lines would shape up to be:

Larry centering iJosh and Leykin
Roman centering Matvey and Rudenko
Defense would rotate with: Reynolds, George and DWH.

The action would be fast and furious.  #8 on El Tigre was a tough challenge.  Many times he would rifle a shot in from the blue line that was bound to find its way to the net.  Though with much luck it never found the back of it.

There were many chances.  All missed.  The Tiger goalie would stand on his head at times.  He would knock away a few certain goals.  Ones from Larry, iJosh and a few others.  There were also a couple posts and  missed empty nets.  However in the middle of a line changes, Matvey would sail into the high slot from the blue line calling for the puck like a former BU forward had done often times on this ice, but most notably a few miles north-west in 1980.  Larry would feed the puck to Matvey who buried the chance and put the Schlitz up 1-0.

The Tigers would be intent on tying the game.  And they had their chances.  Seventeen by the goalies count.  That does not include a puck off the post on a relatively open net.  But the goalie in goal would not let it happen.  Not this night.  The Schlitz D knowing that the goalie needed the help worked relentlessly to keep the puck away.  And they did not disappoint.

In the end.  Schlitz would hold on for the 1-0 shutout win and secure its first points against a team not managed by Schlidaveur Inc.

Without further ado, the stars of the game:

3rd Star: Matvey.  For his game winning goal

2nd Star: The Defense.  Just a great job.

1st Star: Mr. Zero: Nelson Sharfman. There is nothing I can say that the score cannot explain.  THANK YOU for playing net.  And congrats on the shutout.

Beers for 4th Period were had under the turf field.  Provided by Larry.

Winter season opener-daveur!

Nice to be back on the ice last night in the cozy historic confines BU's Walter Brown Arena. The new look Daveurs faced off in our first league game since last spring, when the Beercans hoisted the championship trophy.
The night had drama early as the fill in keeper for the Cads apparently only arrived with one skate. That deflated the mood for a bit until, in a big upset, a skate appeared! Management would like to throw a big thank you shout out to the Zamboni driver the helped us out.
The Daveurs owe you a cold one sir.

So back in business we were able to start the game with about 10 mins remaining in the first.
The Cadavers
Steve in Net
DWH, Bauer and George playing D
Baker, Chapman, Roman, Seva, Matvey and one other? who am I forgetting?

The Schlitz
Tom in Net
Reynolds, iJosh, Jeff and Campbell on D
Larry, Douville, Sully, Daley, Mitch, and Matty Elliot playing forward.

The game was tight. Gold spent a lot of time chasing Paul Chapman around in his new shirt. but there was no blood after the first abreviated period.
Black/Red would get the first one after Matvey would tip home a shot from Bauer late in the second period to take the lead.
The Gold would see the inside of the penalty box plenty, with Douville going once and Campbell going twice (on his way to 3 and an ejection) before the end of two...
Apparently the big shock in re-joining the league was a bucket full of penalties...

Gold would play tough, and the Larry, Sully, Daley group would do very well on a few cycles through the offensive zone. But it wouldn't be enough to get over on the man with one skate. The fill- in Steve would not let a thing by and the gold was left in the cold.
Roman would grab an empty netter as time wound down to make the final 2-0.

3rd Star: The Zamboni Driver for "aquiring" the needed skate

2nd Star: Matvey for the Game Winner
1st Star: Steve Mitch... for showing up, finding a skate, and pitching a shutout!

Great to be back on the ice... and looking good!
Please comment if I've forgoten anything.

The 2nd Penultimate!

When you think of classic sports rivalries, who do you think of?  Islanders-Rangers?

Sox-Yankees?

Maybe Bruins-Habs?

None of these compare to Cadavers-Schlitz.

Ever since these two teams started playing in the same division and started playing each other regularly, familiarity quickly bred epic storylines--and epic battles.  Perhaps it's due to the number of skaters that have played for both squads, but there's just no denying that when these teams face-off... it's something else entirely.  Often the games aren't truly decided until well into the 4th period.

Sunday night will be a re-match of the 2007 Penultimate game.  The CADs hope to repeat that performance and force a second CHAMPIONSHIP-DOUBLE-DAVEUR (which the Schlitz won to claim the 2007 trophy).

The Cadavers needed to win a play-in round just to make the playoffs this season, and have systematically gotten the job done... with just one blemish to an otherwise spotless postseason record... a 5-2 loss at the hands of the Schlitz.  Do the beercans have the zombies figured out?

The 2007 trophy was the last appearance in the championship game for the Schlitz.  The Cadavers last competed for T-shirts in 2011, but fell short.

Rosters haven't been finalized yet, but the next chapter of Schlidaveur (which is apparently a rather risque word in a Scandinavian language) will be written on Sunday.

Return to Sparta....again!

So the Cadavers would play yet another game against the Spartan.  Feeling like that is the only team we play lately.

We traveled to UMalcatraz to face the men in green this time.  Albeit with similar results as last time:

UMass Boston
Thursday, March 14 @ 9:20pm
Spartans 5
Cadavers 2

The Cadavers would have a full squad of 13 players.  The Spartans would be, well, sparse.  This should bode well for the men in red.  Is that your final answer?  Because if it is, then you are wrong.  The Spartans would, or actually shall I say, one Spartan pretty much dominated this game.  The fill-in goalie, Steve, played great.  He made some stellar saves.  However he could not get in the way of some of the constant slew of break-away plays that presented themselves behind the D.  Very quickly we would be down 2-0.  Though Jim Sullivan would find a way to put on into the net this time.  If you recall, last time he should have had one, but somehow got robbed.

Number 12, had quite the game for the Spartans.  He was able to score all five goals (according to Point Streak he only scored 4, but they left out the empty net goal).  He also was able to sit for 2 minutes for calling George a lady part name after he fell  into the boards and blamed George.  He would also draw a penalty on iJosh while the Spartans were already on  a power play.  He would grab the puck, curl around and lose an edge.  As he fell, his skate his iJosh's stick as iJosh tried to stay with #12.  When even your own team disputes the penalty, it is a pretty bad call.  But despite all protests the Cads would have to endure a 5 on 3 that they would eventually kill.

In the end Leo (#12) was too much for the Cadavers.  He did a wonderful job of skating to and from the icing line to the blue line.  I would complain more if the Spartans had a full squad, but they only had 6, so I will only slightly grumble about that.

Again, kudos to the fill-in goalie.  Hopefully we will see him in the pipes again for Schlidaveur International.

Schlitz can't get past the Booze

Roman passed....a blog enter over.  So here is Roman with the rundown:

 D was Peter-Baker, DWH-Bauer
O: Jared-Larry-Matt, Seva-Roman-Scott

They scored the first goal on a power play with DWH in the box for slashing. We(me) could not clear the puck out of the zone several times. Randy was livid about that one. DWH tied the score off the scramble up front with goalie giving up rebound of my shot from the slot. Seva and Scott were fighting for the puck as well, but it was Dan who flipped it over the goalie. They made it 2-1 of the rash and a good shot that went over Randy's blocker. Somewhere in between Seva got called for offside, but he thought he got called for a penalty and placed himself in the box! After about 20 seconds of playing 5 on 4 Refs decided to tell poor Seva that there were no penalty and he got released from the cell. Luckily they did not score on that "powerplay". And so it was 2-1 until last 2 minutes of the game. Later on in the locker room Larry said he was contemplating hanging them up. I made a rush down the left side, somehow made it around the D and got to the net at which point goalie made a good play and pocked the puck away from me, but god bless the luck bounce it ended up on my stick and while falling pushed it towards a net where goalie did not have time to recover and it ended up in the net. 2-2 and Larry is still with us. Jared Matt and Larry had plenty of chances, breakaways and two on ones, missing empty nets but no luck. Puck was really bouncing all night. Seva was rushing all night and played well (not including his brain fart with the fantom penalty). He almost scored the goal last minute of the game with 2 on 1 with Larry.  Scott almost had a breakaway off the rush.

We really should have won this game, but oh well.

Thanks Roman.

Cadavers fail to capture Sparta

So in a snowy Thursday night many would make the trek to Canton to take on the Spartans.  After a little bit of shuffling the eventually roster would fill out to a robust twelve skaters.  Somehow the score sheet disappeared in the snow, so my weathered memory is a little more clouded due to this issue.  The long and the short of it is that:

Spartans 4
Cadavers 2
Thursday March 7, 10:10
at Canton A

The goalie was again excellent for us.  However we would quickly get down 2-0.  Jim Sullivan would rattle one, not quite home.  He grabbed  a pass from behind the net and riffled one at the net.  The goalie would get a very small piece of the puck.  The puck then hit the post and bounced out of the crease.  Jim raised his arms thinking that he had the goal, but he would quickly have to just get back on defense.

The Cads would eventually cut the lead to 2-1, but Sparta would quickly re-establish a 2 goal lead.  Later in the game Alex would make a nice play, kicking the puck to himself, beating some Spartans and poking it home.  But the Spartans would eventually pad their lead again, before fending off the Cads for the rest of the 3rd.

Due to the snowy weather there would be no 4th period.  Seemingly everyone was able to get home safely, though it was definitely tough at time.

And no, keeping up with the Blog is not easy.

Schlitz's D is Offensive vs the Tigers

Schlitz 6
Tigers 2
Monday Feb 25, 2013 @ 10:10
Milton Academy

So another day another blog.  The Original Blogger is probably home, sipping tea with his pinky extended watching as other people do HIS work.  But that is okay,  we are happy to contribute.  So without further ado here is the skinny:

This Monday night would begin with a smattering of folks in the locker room.  Rumor had it that Dan with Hands was sneaking away by claiming to get bread and milk for a household filled with children, an infant and in-laws to get some of his frustrations out on the ice.  But until we actually saw him in the locker room, it would be exactly that, a rumor.  As some of us laced up the final skate and headed to the ice, DWH would arrive......shortly followed by Nelson.

As the puck dropped on the 1st face-off a few stragglers would remain in the locker room causing some dynamic assignments until they all arrived.  Once they did the lines would settle into: Elliott & Matvey centered by iJosh; Gregson & Sullivan centered by Roman. So for once we had no forwards skating back on D and had a strong defensive core and instead pushed some defensemen forward, hence defenseman Bauer & Nelson would be centered by Defenseman Jeff Fosdick.    That would leave DWH, Valenti, George and Reynolds to cover the blueline and stellar goalkeep Tom Denault sat in the pipes.

This alignment would pay pretty quick dividend as it was evident that all cylinders were working early.  Foz and Bauer would be able to move the puck well and the D was evidently solid.  Desipite the Tigers having a couple guys who could move, only #8 and the guy with grey pants (#26) were really strong.  The Schlitz would trade chances.  About halfway through the period, Reynolds would get a hold of the puck with some time at the blueline.  He would fire one toward the net and through to give the Suds a 1-0 lead.  This type of play would continue.  Valenti would fire a few toward the net and the Gold were even able to make some crisp passes and contain the puck.  Despite all that a defensive lapse late in the period would leave Tom all alone and the Tigers would net one on a mini break-away on the glove side of Tom.  1-1 at the end of the 1st.

2nd Period we would see more good movement and good hustle.  At about the 9 minute mark of the period, iJosh would dive and poke the puck away from the defender.  He would slide into the boards and while getting up would get tangled with an opponent.  In the ref's opinion it was a blatant trip.  However it appeared to be nothing more than two guys sliding into each other.  Regardless, iJosh would be box-bound.  Schlitz would pretty handily kill this penalty, and shortly there-after, Foz would get into the action with a nifty shot from the high slot that would put the Gold up 2-1.    More positive work for the Suds.. Play again move to the offensive zone.  Reynolds would move the puck to Matt Elliott who would fire the puck toward the net where iJosh was screen the goalie.  The puck would get tipped by the defenseman, just in front of the screen and find its way to the top of the net.  2-1 Gold.

3rd Period would open up the floodgates a bit.  Roman would get criticized for hold the puck too long and not making the right pass to a forward moving teammate.  I think the actual quote by Sharfman was, "Hey Roman, there is this guy on your right wing (Sullivan) who's actually pretty fast.  Use him".  So the next shift, Roman would hold the puck at the red line and amble over toward the blue as Sully streaked past him only to have to put on the breaks to avoid the offsides.  Roman would skate in the zone, get rid of the puck as the rest of the bench called to him to finally pass.  Sully would pick it up and send it toward Gregson camped out in front of the net.  Greggy would take the pass and send it home for a 3 goal lead. iJosh would again make the scoresheet, but again by finding the box.  Another trip, another trip....to the box and again the Suds would handle iJosh's indiscretion with ease. Bauer would also get into the action.  He would sail in and push the puck past the goalie and celebrate winning the Stanley Cup™, at least it seemed like it as he raised his hand in triumph as he backed into the corner wall.  5-1 Suds.  Then DWH would try to mimic Zdeno Chara's spin-o-rama move.  He would spin clockwise and make his way around some defenders, just before the blueline he would find Bauer heading toward the net and feed him.  Roman would net the goal and make it a 6-1 lead.  In the waning seconds of the game, the Tigers would make a mad rush and get one past Tom to finish the night at 6-2.

I cannot forget to mention that despite the offensive night by the defensive personnel, it was another stellar night for Tom in net.  He sent away chance after chance whenever the Tigers did get their opportunities.

A nice night in Milton.  No 4th period as none of us really want to end up on the Milton Police Blotter.  Plus DWH had to find and open Stop & Shop along the way home to find the milk and bread he claimed to be going out for.

Stars of the Night:

  • 3rd Star: Tom Denault for his understated, but yet solid play in net.
  • 2nd Star: Eric Bauer: 1 goal and excellent play on both the offensive and defensive zone.
  • 1st Star: Jeff Fosdick: 1 goal, 1 assist and just great overall play. Almost down graded him due to blog neglect. I guess I'm starting to get over it.
Postscript:  The scoresheet on Pointstreak lists almost all goals as "Substitute".  My guess is as good as yours in regards to accuracy for goals & assists.

This is not Sparta! Zombies crawl to an 8-1 victory?

According to the scoresheet there were 0 penalties.
Spartans started with 4 and managed to get 6 skaters to kind of finish the game.

Sparta was about 296 warriors short for the first period.

Cadavers were listed as  #6 #88 #5 #44(that's me) #7 #13 #90 #9(Possibly one of the Beatles) #83 #17 #23 or #25 can't tell #18 and rounding out an uneven 13 #55.
The referee/lineman's name was Brian and he really didn't want to do much except go home.
The scorekeeper was too busy writing down names and stats to write his own name so I will just refer to him as the nihilist.

So they started out with no goalie and had 4 skaters and and the usual "if the goalie doesn't show the game is off" Thanks Buddah he showed and they started down a man.
3 full lines and 2 sets of D were running short shifts. I don't remember much of the game because I was doing my bench yoga.
This is pretty much what the first period looked like.

So here is the scoring breakdown.
Period 1
Cadavers #17 at 8:25 assists #18 & #7
Cadavers #55 at 1:45 assists #18 and 3

Period 2
Cadavers #5 at 12:45 assist #23 and \
Cadavers #5 at 11:45 assist #23 and #83
That has to be some sort od NESHL record for us.
Great work by these two, I'm just guessing it was gordon & sully.
Cadavers #90 at 5:15 assists \ \   selfish guy in the blue helmet skated down the ice around the net and managed to somehow pop it in.

Period 3
Cadavers #13 at 16:41(how is that even possible?) Thanks nihilist. Assists #90 and \
Cadavers (Power Play) #88 at 11:10 assist #6 and #44
I think it may have been #6 assisted by #44  because this guy wasn't passing.

I know it was a power play because it felt like the start of the first period but nothing on the scoresheet.

Spartans#23 at 6:12 assists by \ and  \

This play is called by Randy -
"It would have been a shutout, but the D screwed up and actually allowed a shot-on-goal in the third period."

The game ended soon after that as this was not Sparta and the Sully/Gordon combo injured the other goalie with about 4:30 left on the clock. I'm not sure what happened but I think Gordon smacked the puck on his knee or pulled the goalie muscle.
Conclusion
WE WIN!!!!!!!!!
Period 4
Goal by parker as he ventured into another locker room with a bunch of dudes dancing and playing with their dog. Came back with a beer with not comments.

3 Stars
*     ---  #5 for 2 goals and a goalie takeout
**   ---  #55 for 2 silent goals one of them being the game winner
*** --- #18 for 3 assists

Honorable mentions
Randy for an almost shutout and needing an escort for the way home.
and #90 little blue helmet goal & assist

Once again working together we proved that you can do it through teamwork.
Oh and this -

Return of the Blog

457 Days!!!!!!!! Yes boys and girls, that is the last time that Mr. Jeff Fosdick actually posted a Schildaveur Blog Post.  So after a few requests and finally a plea from K.Mitch Goldenberg, the keys have been granted.  So, I, the Official Guest Blogger™ will be taking up semi-permanent residence along with Mitch and Dan Gregson....and the Original Blogger if he <sarcasm>ever finds the time</sarcasm>.

The Blog now returns after what feels like a twenty year slumber.

So without further ado, here is the skinny:

Schlitz Bloodied by the Cones
Schlitz vs the Streetcones
Wednesday  February 21, 2013
Quincy Youth Arena 10:10pm

Schlitz 1 - Streetcones 6

So the last time I blogged.....well, I don't remember.  But the last time I recall playing the Streetcones it wasn't a fun affair.  We held our ground, mostly because of a fill-in goaltender.  Can't say that this is going to be any different

Early in the game it was evident that the Cones were a better skating team.  However because of goaltending, some luck and a little bit of hard work, we were able to keep them at bay.  Tom (I think), did a great job of turning away every slap shot and breakaway that came towards his crease.  We really have to  hand it to him.  A few chances were even missed by the Golden Beercans.  Larry made a couple passes to iJosh who just could not get a handle on the puck to get a good enough shot.  There was another shot, I think by Campbell, that just missed the near side of the net and went just wide.  So the 1st period  would end 0-0.

In the second, there would be a bit of confusion on the lines and the original set-up of John Walsh-Larry Bell-iJosh Greenstein and Nelson Sharfman-Roman Kurin-Dan Gregson with K.Mitch Goldenberg rotating through the lines was mixed up a bit with iJosh and Nelson shifting lines.  Shortly after that, Larry would feed Mike Campbell  who would put one past the Cones goalie to give the Schlitz a surprising 1-0 lead.  But the lead would not last for long.  The Cones would get one past the stellar goalkeeper and tie the game at 1-1.  In the middle of the period, Reynolds would crash to the ice and fall awkwardly, hitting his head.  He would have to be helped to the bench and seemed a bit woozy.  He would remain on the bench and try to regain his balance. Back on the ice, iJosh would soon take a tripping penalty near the defensive blue line as he would slip and lose the puck and make a last gasp attempt at stopping the opponent.  No dice - 2 minute timeout.  Schlitz would hold on and keep the Cones off the board. However with 10 seconds to go, the guys in gold would ice the puck.  Larry would lose the face-off and before anyone to get to the point, their defenseman would bury one  from the high slot to take a 2-1 lead with only 6 seconds left in the period.......DAMN!!!!

The 3rd would not be so kind.  Reynolds would try to finish the game, but he only managed one shift before calling it a night.  This would move Roman to the blue line to join Baker, Bauer and Campbell.  Early in the 3rd there would be some chances.  The gold even were able to control play a bit in the offensive end.  But no one could find the back of the net.  Campbell would, as one would expect, find the penalty box after a trip behind the net.  This would lead to a power play goal.  Now the Streetcones were heating up and would eventually start scoring at will.  A couple on the breakaway, one just on the inside of the net.  Schlitz just kept leaving the goalie on his own and the superior play of the Cones got the best of us.    So Schlitz would try to just make it respectable and as the period wound down play would continue in the offensive end.  Again no great chances.  On the last feeble attempt, the puck would find its way behind the Cone's net with 2 seconds to play.  iJosh, who was closest to the puck, noticed the time and stood up and started to curl away from play only to be leveled by a Cone at the buzzer.  That would prompt iJosh to get up and take a shot at the Cone.  A bit of jawing continued and eventually Josh would skate away.  Larry - who gets big kudos in my book - then took matters into his own hands and took on a Cone and would find himself rolling around on the ice trading punches. The ref would kick Gold off the ice, no handshakes this time.  Someone from our bench then decided to take a puck and throw it over the scorer's booth into the Cone's bench.  At that point it was time to clear the area as the Gold would spend the 4th in the locker room rather than intermingling with the Streetcones in the parking lot as I would hear them chatting about the projectile after the game.

Overall a great effort by the goalie and a good  effort by the Gold.  Too bad it had to end like that.

In other news it was reported before the game that Dan with Hands has added two more hands to the family.  Congrats to him, his wife, and his new daughter.

But at least the Blog is Back!!!!

The beast is alive
