Final Summer Daveur big Schlitz win!

Cadavers (15) vs Schlitz (15)
Tuesday August 12th
BU 9:10pm

Schlitz 4
Cadavers 2

Another rousing match between the Zombies and Suds on Tuesday night at the old Walter Brown Arena. This one was a very nice match up, selected by team Captains Larry Bell for the Cads and Mike Campbell for the Schlitz. These guys faced off playground style via conference call at the end of last week and selected the squads that would play on Tuesday and then continue on into the playoffs. The catch here was that the winner could decide which team to play as in the coming "tournament" therefore selecting which group of opposing teams they felt they have a better chance of competing with.
So things got rolling with some late stragglers coming in, and Brian Carey's son filling in a spot for the Gold, playing opposite his old man who was in the pipes for the Cads. Greg James once again went to Canton first, apparently because he just likes Canton so much... but he brought Superstar Fan Miran with him so we will be nothing but nice to Greg.
The teams got to it and there was some nice action early. Here is how the rosters broke down.

Cadavers
D pairs: George and Hammitt, James and Kevin Manning.
Offense: Larry, Chris and Jasse, and Matvey, Gregson and Slate, with Underhill rotating. Brian Carey in Net

Schlitz
D pairs: Campbell and Jeff, Matt Elliott and Valenti
Offense: Capraro, Reynolds and Parker, and iJosh, Roman and John Carey, with Scott Pounds somewhere in the mix. Lizzy in Net.

Again, this game looked to be a nice matchup with good roster distribution all the way around. Keep in mind that the Cads will gain Nelson and DWH for the playoffs, but lose Kevin Manning unless he is needed to sub. Also, the Schlitz will add Jim Sullivan (no show) and John Carey wont be available. All in all the squads played pretty evenly and the first period was a frenzy at both ends for the first 4 minutes or so.
Then the Gold broke the ice. Mark Reynolds potted a nice goal from linemate Pete Capraro at the 13 minute mark that put them ahead 1-0. The teams would continue a nice and lively pace of play, again with good chances that both keepers turned away until Mark Reynolds would strike again. This time from Matt Elliot, Mark put the Suds out on top 2-0 with 6 minutes left in the first. But even then... he wasn't done. The Gold continued to build pressure and seemed to bottle up the Cads pretty well and Mark potted another for the natural hat trick in the first period! This one was from Roman and Elliot. Great work by hard working Mark Reynolds for really coming to play, and the Suds got the benefit taking a whopping 3-0 lead into the second period.

The Cads wouldn't go quietly I can tell you that. Larry and the boys kept on coming and really the momentum in the second noticeably switched over to the Red side of things. A little more than halfway through the period Matvey struck with a "clean it up" goal in front of Lizzy that got the Red on the board. This came at 7:40 in the period and after a bunch of time in the Gold end where the Red just kept after it time and again as the 'cans failed to clear.
Not more than 2 minutes later the Gold would get back on track with a nice play of their own. Mike Campbell to Roman to ... guess who... Mark Reynolds for his and the Gold's fourth goal of the night. This was a nice goal to get because the Red showed serious Zombie Pride and kept after it for the rest of the period.
With 40 seconds left in the second Greg James scored unassisted after another long scramble in the Gold end. The blogger can't recall if this goal took place before or after Greg had a fantastic collision with Mike Campbell in front of the Gold net. They felt that one at the earthquake labs on the Richter scale somewhere. Anyway if the hit happened before, than the goal was a nice make up for it.
The game went into the third 4-2 Suds and stayed that way through the whole period. Good chances all around but nothing broke for either team as time ticked away.
Some plays of note were Blake Underhill not realising that his penalty was over in the first until he heard the whole Red bench screaming at him... Jeff Fosdick sliding headfirst into the endboards after trying to breakup a chance by Brother Chris. Chris got the shot off but Lizzy stopped him. Pete Capraro holding onto the puck and shooting even though linemate Mark was wide open with an open net to shoot at... Pete wasn't letting him have 5. Larry and Pete trading blows...err shots in the waning minutes. John Carey getting off a couple good ones only to be STONED by his old man... and probably a bunch of other stuff that I just can't remember.
The fourth period was dominated once again my Superstar Miran James and her unstoppable, kabobs, Spring rolls, and watermelon... and "man sized" brownies... you spoil us my dear... we are very grateful. Parker and Chris brought beer, and probably a few others too but again... things got hazy after the game... even after Jasse made a under the radar escape with out apres skate.

Game Stars
3rd Star: Lizzy. Nice 2 goal game and a bunch of HUGE stops to seal the win.
2nd Star: Matt Elliott. 2 helpers and a nice fill-in job on D for the Gold.
1st Star: With a Bakers Hat Trick, four goal night... Mark Reynolds. This prompted calls of "D-League" from the Red bench... to which we answered... "You wanna see his grey hair?" Great work Mark, a few more like that and you'll be a cinch for the scoring title.
