Cadavers 6
Schlitz 1
Well the hockey gods set us up for another interesting night at the rink. In the early going it looked like both teams would be shorthanded and both did take the ice with only 9 players each. Mitch and Josh would show during the first and bring the Red total to 11.
The teams broke down like this.
For the Dead in Red: DWH, Kevin Manning, Capt. George and Hammitt as the D. Forwards were Roman, Parker and Elliott, with iJosh, Mitch, Gregson, and Nelson working the foward ranks. In front of Sub Goalie Jim Sullivan.
For the 'cans: A D trio (again) of Campbell, Valenti, and Fosdick. Offense was Capraro centering, Kilroy, and Reynolds, and Larry centering Dr.Pounds, and new guy Mike Fitzpatrick. Lizzy played for the Gold.
The first period was a non scoring affair with lots of up and down action. Up and down and wheezing for sure but the two teams felt each other out well and both keepers made some stops. Both teams had reason to feel good about their chances and the game was tight.
The Red seemed to gather momentum though as the play went on, and then they broke the ice. On a typical hard working shift in the zone Nelson made a nice feed to Parker who got the Zombies on top at 13:00. The Gold had a perceptible letdown that only resulted in more bad news less than a minute later (12:15) when (again working hard and cycling the zone) the Red added to the lead when Dan Gregson plunked one in from iJosh and it was 2-0 Zombies.
If you are sensing a trend, the Gold were too, but this time it took another 4 minutes of playing time when the Zombies struck again. Matt Elliott had a nice goal, again from Workaholic Nelson with 8:15 left in the period. The Gold litterally was happy to escape the period with a nice few minutes of play and went into the third down 3-0.
The Third was looking a little better for the 'cans as they actually got a few shots on Sully and tried desperately to climb back into the game. A nice breakaway steal by Jeff Fosdick resulting in a nice shot past Sully (and through a hole in the back of the net) and the 'cans had hope. Hope that seemed to carry them for a bit, but tired legs are a big load to carry and the moral of the story is that they couldn't keep it up.
Despite 2 power plays first on DWH, then on iJosh the Gold was unable to muster any type of sustained offense and the Red defense did a great job working the play all the time. DWH would make up for his penalty shift with a nice shot (from Roman) that beat Lizzy cold and put the Zombies up 4-1 at 8:04 remaining.
Then it was the 'Cans turn to run to the box and that was just about it for the game. Campbell, and Valenti both went, and Kevin Parker put things (way) out of reach with an unassisted bid that made it 5-1. The Zombie pride (and Nelson's legs) kept moving till the end and the Greybeard Veteran, scoring leader himself capped the night with an unassisted goal to close things out with a little over a minute left. The end result 6-1 Cadavers.
Of course the last goal should have been whistled dead, I should know I had a great view of it, as a matter of fact I had first row viewing for all 6 of the Red goals (-5 for the night) so I would be an authority. They were all good.
Good work by everyone in Red and a nice 'Daveur win.
