Suds win Campbelldaveur!

Cadavers (3) vs. Schlitz (2)
Tuesday June 3
Canton 7:00pm

Schlitz 3
Cadavers 1

Last night the 'davers gathered at Canton for the first team on team action of the young summer season.
Guest GM Mike Campbell deserves high marks indeed for concocting a potent and well-balanced matchup for the Campbelldavuer. The game was a fun skate, and a close game throughout.
Larry led a scrappy group of Cadavers featuring a frontline of Jim Sullivan, Dr. Jasse and himself. They were backed by Matvey, CEO BMF Killroy, Scott. They were backed by a strong group of D led by Capt. George, Marc Valenti, Pistol Pete Capraro, and newcomer Mark Reynolds. This group was abley backstopped by Brian Carey.
The Cads came out strong and scored less than two minutes into the game after some strong early pressure. Russian scoring machine (sorry Roman) Matvey Nikhamik tipped a hard shot from Mark Reynolds, through the Schlitz D and keeper OEJ. The Dead in Red took the games first lead and the up and down nature of the early play meant this was going to be a hard fought game as the Schlitz looked to get going.
The Schlitz liked their chances going into the game, keeper OEJ (out of semi retirement…err musical sabbatical whathaveyou) had a D corps of the Double Dans (DWH & Gregger) backed by Jeff and Greg James. The Golden Beercans were lead by a frontline of Roman, Chris and Kevin Parker. Those guys were backed by iJosh, Ken and Chuck Slate. Mike the Hammer Hammitt did rotation duty.
It wasn’t long before the Schlitz had a handfull of chances of their own and quickly got their feet under them after the early rushes by the Red. It was clear both teams were going to get chances. The Zombies had several breaks that got behind the Gold D but OEJ held tight making a handfull of very nice stops. The gold was definitly building to a pitch. The first period was drawing to a close with the Zombies up 1.
Then the Gold got a break. Jeff took a center ice turnover off the stick of CEO Kilroy and went hard into the Zombie zone. Harried by George first he kept barrelling toward the net with Valenti closing. Brian went down, and Jeff shot through him as Valenti caught him with a cross check that sent all concerned into the net… Marc, Jeff and Brian (who got the worst of it) in a heap just after the clunk of the puck in the back of the net. Valenti for a rough, Jeff for the goal, unassisted, and all even after one.
The Second period was an even-steven grind it out for chances affair straight up. Both teams had strong chances. Both keepers made solid stops. Both teams worked hard trying to gain an advantage. The Gold had a larger share of the chances, especially in the second half of the period. We went to the third with the Gold pressing, the Zombies scrambling to get something going, and the game still tied.
The game would turn again less than a minuet into the third. The Gold took the faceoff into the Red zone, and DWH fed Kevin down low. Parker threw it at the net from the side angle, looking for someone in front, and the shot sneaks through and gives the Schlitz their first lead of the game with 16:21 remaining.
The Red frustration would start to show as George took a whistle for knocking Ken down a minute and a half later. The Schlitz couldn’t capitalize on the power play as the Red did a great job keeping the puck out of their own end. They would continue to get chances but OEJ was having none of it. The Gold held tough and did some more knocking on the door of their own with Brian up to the task as the game got late.
Greg James would go to the box at 3:05 and the Red looked like they would have their chance to tie it late. The Cans were up to the task and after a few anxious moments and a few good chances by the Zombies, they were able to kill the penalty. Just as the time ran out on the James penalty Mike Hammitt took a turnover of his own and fired it into the empty net for the game sealer with :30 seconds on the clock. Game over.
A really good matchup, well played by both sides. Lots of effort out there from everyone. Once again management wants to thank Guest GM Mike Campbell for coming through in the lineup department. This was an excellent way to start off the summerdaveur season.
Big Kudos also go out to our significant fandom that was in full effect last night. The Capraro Crew and the Slate family were there, to cheer on both dads and their teams. Thanks for coming out boys and girls. Thanks also to Moms Kerry and Danielle for making the trek and bringing the kiddos.

3rd Star: Guest GM Mike Campbell for a great matchup
2nd Star: DWH for superior defensive and offensive play and the assist on the game winner.
1st Star: Kevin Parker for the game winner. Nothing pretty, but it won the game. Great job.

Overheard in the parking lot 1:
“I don’t think the bag of cheetos was really a good choice for pregame.”
“Yeah.. I kind of underestimated the nastyness of the cheeto-belches…”
Overheard in the parking lot 2:
“That stuff’s all chemicals, it can’t be good for you.”
“Think of all the sperm I’m killing.”
“Are you kidding? Your wife’s gone all month, you’re going to be killing sperm for weeks.”
“Well…what’s your excuse? I mean, your wife doesn’t travel.”
“Good point.”

Some of the crew met for pre-game... but no beers. Nice to see that everyone got there early for a 7pm game.

Dr. Pounds Aircraft party shirt was a hit.
