Scorapalloozadaveur ends in a TIE!

Schlitz (4) vs. Cadavers (4)
Wednesday June 10th
BU 10:20pm

7-7 Tie....

Well that was fun. The teams met up for a Youngn's vs. Oldn's showdown latenight at Boston University. This game was a tough one as there were a bunch of people who couldnt' make it, but we ended up 9 on 9 until the 3rd when the Schlitz added one more... who would prove critical to the outcome of the game... but more on that later. This one turned into a good old fashioned shootout with multiple lead changes and scoring chances a-plenty.

It all started a little strangely. The games were running a little late I guess for when the Zamboni left the ice the horn blew. This was as I was walking out of the locker room. By the time I got to the bench a minute of game time was already gone. WTF? I asked why they started the clock so early and both refs and the scorekeeper pointed to the clock that said about 10:23pm... uh...ok. We have had these refs before... John Flood and Bill Tuminus and they were clearly not interested in hanging around. They also barely gave any assists during the game which sent the blogger fishing for stories to sort out the game... from his cloudy head... and the stats. As by way of excuse making... that's part of the reason this post is so late.
In regards to that the email of the week comes from Dr. Jasse probably out in the wild hinterland of the mid-west wondering just where the hell this gamestory has been....
Dear Blog Management,
I would like to register a complaint.
Here I am, all alone in the hinterlands, nary a hockey player in sight. Not only did I miss the Grey-beards vs. the Youngin's but I haven't had a whiff of info from what had to be a classic battle of the 'ages'.
So what' the deal? What's more important? Fulfilling your job that puts food on your family's table or meeting my needs as a wobbly-kneed veteran who just wants desperately to connect to a game that is rapidly passing me by?
BLOG ME, DAMMIT!!!
I need, I need, I need.
Best,
mj

Ahem... ok Doc. You got it. Here it is.
The game got underway with about 15:00 left in the first thanks to the hurry-up refs. The Oldguy Cads had Jeff, Campbell, and Stephan at D. The Front line of Nelson, Parker, and Capraro was backed by Pearlman Hammitt and Blake Underhill. The Golden Babyfaces had DWH, Valenti, and Manning on D with a front line of Larry, Elliot and iJosh (i think) backed by Roman, Matvey and Gregson. I may not have that exact...please comment if it was otherwise.
The game got off to a rocky start for the Oldsters as the Goldenthumbsuckers went up first led by the flying Russians. Roman Kurin scored the first two goals of the game to put the Gold on top in the early going. Here's Roman to tell the tale himself.
"I scored the first of the game off the scramble in front of kilroy where I think everybody on my line got a shot off (Matvey, Gregson).I scored the second goal of the game of the long wrist shot that Kilroy missed, probably because he was screened."
Nice work Roman. But the overexhuberence of youth would not get the best of the wily Vets as the Cads turned it on and started to get some pressure on Lizzy. Billy Pearlman got a nice one to break the ice for the Vets. Here's Billy's take:
"Me and Hammitt combined on our first goal when Mr.Angrypants drew the D to him and then feathered a beautiful pass to me in the slot and I put it over Lizzy's shoulder top corner...a nice shot if I may say so myself."

Next up for the oldsters was Jeff Fosdick, pinching down deep. He threw a shot at Liz from a near "baseline" angle that saw its own way through the bodies and under her arm into the net. All tied up. The first period had some serious action folks, and it wasn't over yet.
Not to be out done the Schlitz mounted another set of attacks on Kilroy and the Red. This time DWH scored a beauty unassisted, only to be followed by Gregson putting one home from Matvey to put them back up two. Here's Roman on that one..
"On Gregson goal I got the puck on the boards and passed it to streaking Gregson who let go of a low wrist shot that went into a low left corner."
Sweet. At the end of 1. 4-2 Schlitz.
It was the second period where the RedVets went to work. They would again come back to tie the game with a pair of goals. Jeff Fosdick again with a nice shot, this time from the hard work of Nelson and Parker. Those two would combine again when Parker scored from Nelson and Blake, with Blake touching it to Nelson who got it to net crashing Kevin for the equalizer.
The Red weren't done and Stephan Wennik showed his wheels as he put home a rush unassisted to give the vets their first lead of the game. The Gold then came back to tie it at 5 with their only goal of the period, Matvey from DWH. The Vets were still not done as Kevin Parker would strike again, this time from Stephan and Campbell. Here's Mike with the play.
"Stefan had the puck on left D, right at the blue line. He had just stopped it from
being cleared out, and I was skating backward, along the blue line, away from him. He dished it over to me... Not a hard pass, but it eventually got to me. I wristed it at Lizzy, and she stopped it, but left the rebound right in front of Parker who stuffed it home."

This would leave the game 6-5 Cads at the end of 2 periods. Clearly a brilliant, see-saw, back and forth game that was promising to have a wild finish. There had been a few penalties along the way but I can't remember the circumstances. Campbell had 2 through 2 periods, as did DWH for the Schlitz. The only other penalty was called on Parker in the third.
The third period was not as high scoring as the first two but was very intense. The Red fought hard to hold onto the one goal lead as the period wore on. About halfway in the Red would get a huge lift. Once again Jeff Fosdick stepped up (literally) and scored his third for a natural hat-trick. Jeff pinched into the zone getting a take away on the loose puck and driving toward Liz fired a hard one that slipped under her glove. The Blogger beams with pride...it just doesn't happen like that for Jeff very often.
Again the grind was on. Now down 2 the Schlitz came back hard. Larry and the boys fought hard and started to pile up the shots and chances. They finally broke through and pulled within one on a goal from iJosh with about 6-7 minuets left. Here's iJosh.
"Larry Bell got the puck behind the net and as the CADs collapsed on him centered the puck to me. I then tapped a backhand through Kilroy's pads."
The Schlitz were within one and were grinding hard. They were buoyed by the arrival of Jim Sullivan who was very late but arrived just in time to give the Schlitz the boost they needed in the third. Here's Nelson with some great comments on how the third period wound down.
"Sullivan showed up early in the third when the Cads were up 6-5. Miraculously we even scored another after he showed to make it 7-5, but the young legs eventually wore us out.
Many kudos to Matt. He made a flurry of saves late to keep the lead deep into the third.
Further kudos goes to Hammit, who was a virtually non-stop skating minor penalty but somehow managed to get none of them called. Old age and treachery...
High stupage (stupidity or courage, you make the call) marks to Blake for sacrificing his body for a late game shot block at the blue line."

Great stuff. Thanks Nelson.
Indeed the young legs did wear us down and the Gold broke through one more time to tie it all up with under 2 minutes remaining. Here's Roman on the goal.
"On the tying goal I kept the puck in the offensive zone and put it towards the net, It was going wide but Jim intercepted this shot and let go of a beautiful backhander that Kilroy had no chance on."
That is how things would end... Seven-seven all even. Not bad for a scoreapaloozadaver. Here are some random comments from a group of the very good guest bloggers that helped out this week.
"... You have to mention Lizzie stoning Nelson, and even with all those goals scored I don't recall Larry ringing anything up, did he go scoreless? Definitely worth a mention if he did. I thought Roman skated great, I thought Blake played great position and really worked hard, and I thought Kilroy, even with all the goals scored was great. He saved some stuff that really should have gone in."
-Hammitt

"….Since you were drunk and can't remember...both me and Hammitt had hat tricks....AND....we F'd that hot co-ed from the BU dorm that came down to see her hockey heroes!"
-Pearlman
...something tells me it didn't really happen like that...

"I had my bell rang on few occasions by the likes of Hammitt and Campbell, I vividly remember the Campbell freight train leveling me on the blue line when I was trying to stick handle around him, next thing I remember I was lying on the ice trying to take a breath of air, brutal, got to keep my head up.
So that's that, first half of the game felt like a pick up game because of low intensity but intensity picked up after a few penalties and physical play."

-Roman

Great contributions one and all the Blogger thanks you all. Now its time for...
GameStars.
3rd Star: Tie. Kevin Parker and Matvey Nikhamik. Both with 3 points on the night. Parker with a pair of goals and Matvey with one but 2 assists. Great work by both guys.
2nd Star: Exercising restraint from hubris the blogger names Jeff Fosdick as the number 2 star. A three goal night hasn't happened for a long time for Jeff and all three were pretty sweet. He would have made 1st star if the last one held up as game winner. Instead...
1st Star: Roman Kurin. Great work all night and a bucket full of points. 2 goals to lead the game in the first and two more assists on the way for a nice four point night for Roman. Great work.
