Generals Surrender to the DEAD!

8-2 Win!

The Hockey Gods were clearly showing favor with the Dead in Red last night from the start. First of all there was a scattering of parking spaces right up close to the rink at the bottom of Babcock St. . Secondly we were located in Locker Room #1. That's right, nice and big, (relatively) clean and above all else warm. A chorus of "why can't we play here every week" went around the room as everyone got dressed. Things looked good with a strong turn out of 12 skaters for a face off with our old friends The Generals.

The lines broke down thus...
Offense Centers: Mike Daley, Matvey Nikhamik, and Roman Kurin Offense Wingers: Pete Capraro, Dan Gregson, Matt Elliot, Blake Underhill, and Matt Kilroy (who also took a shift or two at center).
Defense 1: Dan [DWH] Herbert, and Greg James
Defense 2: Mike Hammitt, and Jeff Fosdick
Pipes: Mike [OEJ] Gash

Rumor had it that Roman Kurin switched into this game for point collection purposes, given that we have an excellent record against the "not so stalwart" Gens. Those sparks of rumor evolved into a full scale blaze as the Radical Russian pounded out 2 goals and a handful of assists on his way to a 6 (six) point night.

The First Period saw some nice pressure in the Gens zone. A few nice cycles, and multiple passes from the Red, and things were looking good. DWH started the scoring off with a very nice rush. Dan made a nice move up the ice and then after a shot and rebound took a glancing feed from Matt Kilroy and buried a beautiful wrister. The gauntlet was tossed and The Dead in Red kept it up and swarmed the Gens zone with many more chances.
On this night, unlike the previous, the chances were falling. Next up Jeff Fosdick sent a long drive in from the point that glanced through Blake Underhill on its way off the back boards and on to Capt. Kilroy who was waiting at the side of the crease to bang home his own tally. There was really good play in general by everyone wearing red. DWH and Greg James played strong D and got good chances with occasional rushes throughout the game. Greg was also nice enough to bring along a fan... the lovely Miran. After Kilroy's goal it was 2-0 Zombies after one.

The Second period saw more of the same but not without a few twists. Jeff decided he would see what might happen if he lazily turned the puck over RIGHT IN FRONT of OEJ. Nothing of course because OEJ was on it. At least Jeff "somewhat" made up for it with a nice rush of his own. Taking the clearing pass combo from Matt Elliott and Roman he took a nice breakaway into the zone and fired it low right side for the third goal. Somehow he must not have seen Roman with him on that rush for the pass....
Jeff wasn't done... he figured since OEJ stopped the first one, he'd try again. After the SECOND turnover RIGHT IN FRONT of OEJ the Generals were on the board with a goal. Somewhere the Coon of Shame picked himself up, brushed himself off and began to look for a ride to Jeff's house. BTW... where the hell is the 'coon anyway? Post in comments if you've seen our furry friend.
The rest of the period was really all good and saw two nice goals from Matt Elliot, both assisted by Roman and Mike Daley. Matvey got in on the action before the end of the second with a goal (from Roman...see a trend here?) of his own. 6-1 Zombies after two.

The third period saw the emergence of Roman as he potted a few of his numerous chances to add to his pile of points. Roman scored two goals, mostly after some nice cycling in the zone, and usually after a few rebounds. Both assisted by fellow Comrade Matvey and the second also by Matt Elliot, who had a very nice statistical night for himself (2 goals, 2 assists). The Generals were able to break through once more as the Red scrambled a bit in our own end, but that was as much glory as the Generals would taste.
That was it, a nice 8-2 win for the Zombies.

Game Stars.
3rd Star: Matvey Nikhamik. A good solid game with a goal and two assists.
2nd Star:Matt Elliott. Another gritty, grind it out performance from Matt. He was all over the place and figured heavily in the scoring with 2 goals and 2 assists. Great job.
1st Star: Roman Kurin. A stellar 6 point night with 2 goals (after numerous rebounds) and 4 (count 'em Larry) assists. Clearly Roman chose the right game to give himself a "boost" in the scoring standings. Great job, nice finish, good solid work. Now lets see some more.

Honorable Mention 1: Mike Daley. A force all night at forward. Mike was all over the place in the attacking zone and did a nice job with face offs. Great work all around.
Honorable Mention 2: Pete Capraro. Ditto...except the part about the face-offs.
Honorable Mention 3: Blake Underhill picks up a point. Great work out there, its tough to get going but you are coming along nicely. Blake had some terrific breakups and played strong positionally.

Don't forget Larry and Roman are on the roster for tonight against the Deep Freeze at the Prison by the Bay. Tune in next time for scoring updates!
