Cans down Cads in Playoff Tilt.

Cadavers (2) vs Schlitz (3)
Wednesday April 9th
Bavis Arena 10:10pm

Schlitz 8
Cadavers 4

Another Playoff Schlidaveur to open this winter's postseason for both clubs. Despite some small adjustments to the rosters, there was a decent turnout for both squads, ending up with 11 a side. Mike Gash bailed out the night before for the Cads, so Our Gal Lizzy came through once again, saving the Zombie bacon and played for the Dead in Red instead of OEJ. Thanks again to Lizzy for filling in on such short notice. One other move was that the Gold gave up defenseman Billy Pearlman (who was a late arrival) to the D-thin Cadavers, in a move that also evened out the numbers at 11. Thanks to Billy for switching right at the last minute. Going forward he will be on the Schlitz roster.
Lets give the full breakdown of who was there.

The Golden Schlitz (and quite dashing... I'll add) Sported
D1-DWH, D.Gregson
D2-Valenti, J.Fosdick
O1-Nelson, C.Fosdick, Parker
O2- Roman, Elliott, Chuck, and Capraro

The Dead in Red sent out....
D1-Mike Daley, Pearlman
D2- Hammitt, Stephan
O1- iJosh, Jasse, Larry
O2- Ken, Matvey, Scott, and Blake
The game started off with some good chances at either end as the last few stragglers filled out the rosters on both sides. It wasn't long until the Golden Suds would break through for the first lead of the game. Nelson put one in the net after taking the feed from Dan Gregson and the scoring was on.

Not long after that the Gold would strike again, this time Pete Capraro capping off a Chris Fosdick rebound to put the Schlitz ahead by two.

There were a few penalties at this point, the first a bench minor for the Zombies for too many men served by Ken. Then there was a nice give and take between Chuck and Stephan in the corner to Lizzy's left that ended up with Chuck taking down Stephan, and then Stephan getting up and giving a nice shot to Chuck just to let him know he was paying attention. That sent both guys to the box with matching minors for roughing.

Stephan was indeed a bit feisty... playing with a certain snarl that we don't always see from the mild-mannered fast skating defensemen. He was part of a number of good rushes for the Red all night and would later be heard on the score-sheet as well.

The first period was busy, and would continue to go the Cans way as time wound down. Kevin Parker put a nice finish on a play that started with Nelson and DWH. Then just before the time ran out Roman Kurin buried a nice wrist shot that came on a rebound from Matt Elliott and Marc Valenti. The period would end with the Zombies in a 4-0 hole and the Cans feeling pretty good about themselves.

The second period was more of the same for the Schlitz but the Zombies were clearly not intimidated and there was pleanty of hard skating and effort on both sides. The Zombies would start to climb back into the game as some of Larry Bell's hard work would pay off as he scored (Dr. Jasse on the assist) to break the ice for the Red. Larry was flying around the ice, much like teammates Stephan and Mike Daley really trying to create some chances. It was clear he wasn't going down without being heard.

Jeff Fosdick for the Gold went off for a trip early in the second, and teammate Dan Gregson went later in that period for a hook. Gregson's penalty stopped an almost sure goal right on the doorstep. Fosdick was just being lazy as he stuck his stick in Stephan (or Mike Daley's) skates.

The Zombies had their own troubles in the period with penalties from Mike Hammitt, and Larry as tensions mounted later in the period.

The Gold would continue their scoring ways with another goal from Nelson (from Parker), a second goal from Pete Capraro (again from Chris Fosdick), and a nice pick up the loose stuff in front goal from Chuck Slate off of a Matt Elliott rebound. By the end of the period it was 7-1 Gold and things looked desperate for the Zombies.

Larry would indeed be heard again as he scored early in the third. This one after Mike Hammitt made a great play turning Jeff Fosdick around and puting a beautiful pass on Larry's stick right in front, where he slammed it home. The next goal would be Larry again for the natural 'trick, this time on a hard work play from iJosh and Dr. Jasse.

A quick word on iJosh who had forgotten his helmet last night, so he played with an extra helmut that Parker had in his truck but didn't have a face shield. First of all... how about Parker carrying an extra helmet around..? Secondly... how the hell did iJosh forget his helmet? Anyway there was much banter post game about who iJosh looked like skating around with the no-cage hat. I think the best one was Guy Carboneau, and there were other references to Mike Ricci. It was a good look for sure, but I'm sure he'll be glad to be playing behind the mask next time. All in all iJosh played well all night despite the rented hat.... and he did look a little like Carboneau...

The Gold would get one more in the third, this one a devastating shot from DWH with D partner Gregson on the assist. The Red would answer one last time when Stephan took a long rush, turning several players, and then completely crossing up Jeff Fosdick (again) to flip a superb shot past Brian for a great unassisted goal. But that was the end of the Red threat and despite some shots back and forth between Larry and Valenti, all went quietly till the final buzzer.

A nice game, some good fun for all, and a decent start to the postseason.

Game Stars.

3rd Star- Pete Capraro and Kevin Parker. Pete for a two goal night, and Kevin for a goal and assist. Both worked hard all night and could have had more...
2nd Star- Larry "show me the scoresheet" Bell. A nice night for Larry with the natural hat-trick despite the losing effort. Larry was driven to get his team back in the game, and was flying around all night trying to make things happen.
1st Star- Nelson "consummate professional" Sharfman. Two goals and a helper, and really could have had much more. I've said it before, I'll say it again... nobody outworks Nelson. Nobody.

Honorable Mention 1: Lizzy. Once again coming through on less than a day's notice to take to the ice for us. Thanks for being there Lizzy, we owe you big time.
Honorable Mention 2: Mike Daley. He didn't make the scoresheet, but he was busy making things happen all night. Good work.
Honorable Mention 3: Scorekeeper Bob Kilcup... for telling the ref at one point that he should treat a certain unmentionable part of his anatomy like a popsicle.... I think you know what I mean.
So the breakdown going forward looks like this. The Cadavers will play next Monday the 14th in Canton at 10:20pm against the Deep Freeze. All you Cads, check your schedules and get back to management (Jeff this week) about your availablilty.
The Schlitz will play the ever dangerous Tigers on the following Monday the 21st at 9:10pm also in Canton. The winner of this game will clearly have the early edge on winning this division. Again, check your availablity and get back to management if you think you have a conflict.

We really want to set up these rosters as both games are critical to getting another Schlidaveur before all is said and done in the playoffs.
'til next time...
Go Zombies
Go Suds
