Zombies Sink Sloshed Suds

Cadavers (2) vs Schlitz (2)
Tuesday May 19
Quincy 10:10pm

Cads 4
Suds 2

Another solid competitive game turned out by the assembled 'daveurs, new and veteran, last night in the Q. It always feels like summer hockey when playing in Quincy, and while not yet up to temp... it was true again last night.

There was some congestion on the central artery due to paving so ALL of the North Shore contingent were late arriving at the rink so the early going saw a very thin bench, especially on the Suds side. As the puck was dropped the Suds skated with 5... for the first 7 minutes of the game.

The breathless five were Captain Pete Capraro, John Carey, Neil Shah, Mike "dasvidahnya" Campbell, and Jeff. They did a heroic job keeping the game close until reinforcements came halfway through the period. Matt Kilroy, in net for the Gold played superbly in the early going to keep his team alive, under the red onslaught.
Joining the Golden squad would be Herbert, Daley, Hammitt, Goldenberg, and iJosh. They would be a welcome sight, and just in time to keep the game under control.
The Red side had a bunch of new faces. First Lizzy took the nets in front of Greg James, Stephan, Rookie Dave Dilorenzo, and a guy named Steve who was a friend of Lizzy's. Dave and Steve are your prototypical half/no shield guys and played up to it. They were fronted by a strong group of forwards led by Captain Mark Reynolds, Larry and Chris, with a second line of Kenny Douville, Blake U, and newbie Howard H. You can bet that first line of Larry, Mark and Chris were tough to contain, and as one would expect, they played hard and got great chances all night.

The blogger is winging this one as the scorekeeper was in such a hurry to leave last night that he didn't leave behind a scoresheet. Sooo if things are a little foggy... please set me straight via email or the comments.
[this is not helped by the fact that your’s truly is now trying to finish a week later…sorry readers…]
One thing I do know is the one word that D partner Mike C text'd me at 843pm.
That word was: Cocked
He wasn't kidding. Now, this didn’t worry me. Many a time we’ve seen Mike play his best after… well… after a few. I can even recall a two goal night after a Jasse Margarita Barbecue Fiesta that may go down as one of his best night’s ever. (hockey wise of course…)

The game was pretty competitive throughout. Kudos to the Duxbury Duo for picking such solid squads. Mark Reynold’s Cadavers were very solid and really tried to take advantage in the early going while the Gold was shorthanded.
The Golden five and Matty “Pipes” Kilroy would play great and the game would settle in to a nice back and forth.
The potent Zombie offense would not be held in check forever and it wasn’t long til they got the first tally of the game when Captain Mark Reynolds would spring loose after a couple of sweet passes from Chris and Larry. Mark buried a nice shot that Matty didn’t have much hope on. 1-0 Zombies.
The change in sides didn’t change the momentum as early in the second the Red and Mark would continue to gain. This time some of the Russian pregame factored in as big Mike C would go sprawling across the blueline in an attempt to turn to catch the decptively quick Captain Reynolds who would zip around the defenseman and would walk in alone and bury the breakaway past Matt. Nice finish on that one that has started with a pass from Chris to get going.
So it was 2-0 Red and the gold was certainly feeling the affects of the thin bench in the eaarly game but they certainly weren’t out of it. First of all, any squad that has Mike Daley playing forward, and DWH manning a corner of the D you are going to be in the game. Also there was some new talent with Nei Shah showing some nice work and a good head for the game. He joins an impressive rookie crop this season. Speaking of Neil, he would help pick the Gold up as he would make a really nice wrap around pass to iJosh who would put it past Lizzy to bring the score to 2-1. This came after some good work in general by all of the Gold.
The game stayed close but the Red couldn’t be held down for long. The game went to the third period 2-1 or this happened first…Larry would put one past Kilroy on a feed from both linemates Mark and Chris (told you that group would be potent). Just keep in mind, as Capt. Reynolds reminded me long after, it was a good thing Larry scored this one given that he missed about 4 other really good chances during the night. You could tell he wanted to get one by Matty, finally he did, to give his squad the 2 goal lead back.
So here we are in the thrid. 3-1 Zombies. The Gold would contine to make the game competitive and DWH would show his stuff when a few minutes into the period he would make one of his pattented swooping carries through the neutral zone then slid along the inside of the blue line to get some room then fired a deadly shot that beat Lizzy and kept the Gold in the game 3-2.
To this point the game had really not seen any or many penalties. That all came to an end as the second half of the third period saw a parade to the box for the Gold that would effectively squash their chances in this one. Hammitt, Campbell, then iJosh would all go. There may have been a match somewhere in there but I’m not sure. Then Campbell would give Larry some “love” in the gold zone and would be called for a rough. Of course it did look like Larry went down a bit easy… but you know… they say that about him.
At some point during these penalties Kenny Douville would score on a rebound from a shot by Stephan to put the game out of reach at 4-2. That would close up the night on the Gold but just before the end they’d get another call just … we’ll just cuz the zebras love us. iJosh’s description of this is best:
Greenstein: being crashed into (loosely interpreted as tripping)
He’s right. It looked exaclty like that. Oh well.
Over all very good game and a fun night. Thanks go out to our regular summer guys that came to fill in Daley, DWH, and Stephan. Thanks also to all the new guys for coming along and signing up this season, we look to have improved a little here in the off season and that’s good news for everyone.
The blogger begs your forgiveness for the late post… I’ll try to keep up with these game stories a bit better as the season goes along.
Game Stars:
3rd Star: I'm going with Lizzy. Another terrific peformance here in the early going.
2nd Star: Larry by virtue of the assist, goal and drawn penalty on Campbell.
1st Star: Captain Reynolds. Not only picks well but leads the way with a pair of goals and a helper. Great work all night.
