Schlitz (1) vs Cadavers (1)
Monday May 11
Dedham 10:10pm

Cadavers 6
Schlitz 1

A nice way to open up the season last night in Dedham.
A spirited, even if not quite up to tempo, matchup against ourselves with a few new faces to add to the mix. We saw Kilroy’s new goalie gear ensemble, we met 3 new guys who for some reason have elected to play with us (they may be regretful this morning, and in general knocked the rust off, and got back into the rythem of things.
The game rosters broke down like this.
For the Gold Matt played goalie. His D corps were Mike Campbell, Pete Capraro, Greg James, then I think rookie Neil Shah took the last D spot… The forwards were a motley group of grisled vets, Larry, Nelson, Jasse, iJosh, Roman, and another rookie Howard Heppelman (number 22 in your program).
The Dead in Red had our gal Lizzy in the pipes, and was fronted by “subbing” Professor Daley, and Jeff Fosdick, and then Captain George with reluctant blue liner (but doing a great job) Chris Fosdick. The Offense would star Kevin Parker Chuck Slate and Mark Reynolds, and another rookie Mike “Goody” Goodwin (brought by Kevin), would go with Ken Douville and Dr. Pounds.

The game would start out…well, not fast. But pretty even. Good chances at both ends. Both keepers were able to get right into the game and make a few good stops. Lizzy in particular was excellent in the early going. The play shuffled back and forth with niether side gaining much of an advantage.
Late in the first the Dead in Red would finally break the ice and solve Kilroy for the first lead. Scott Pounds would plunk home a rebound from a Chris Fosdick drive and would get the Zombies on the board with just under 2 minutes left. The period would end 1-0.
The second would see more of the back and forth as the Gold organized their late arrivals and really got going trying to bring it to the red. Nelson and Larry are no picnic to defend when they have desire… and they had desire. Lizzy was up to the task again making several nice saves in the first few minutes of the second. Then Roman would grab a rebound and put it past Liz (from Jasse) and the game would be tied 1-1 with 11minutes to go in the Second.
At this point the game would take a dramatic turn. Larry, always the demure and respectfull Lady Byng candidate, would get called for suggesting that the ref should move along and clear the path of the play… and to go do something anatomically impossible. The Zebra would blow the play dead and send Lawrence packing for the sin bin and gave the Zombies a power play.
The Red would take advantage of the opportunity and after a nice cycle in front of Kilroy, Chuck would feed Parker who would get one through to regain the lead. I’m not sure but I think there were a few “thank-you’s” blown over to Larry as he rejoined the Gold. The Zombies weren’t done making their move, and 2 minutes later Jeff would clear up to Scott who would get it to Mike Daley who would finish a nice play and a nice rush with a niffty goal putting the zombies up 3-1. That’s how the second would end.
The third saw a good effort by the Gold but not many results. The Zombies would keep up the hard work of their own and Rookie Goody would show that he could be a valuable pick up for the ‘daveurs as he would score twice. The first from Parker at 10 minutes, and the second from Scott with 5 minutes left. Both shots were pretty deadly, and Matty didn’t have much of a chance on either. That would essentially put the game away as the Gold would continue to move their legs but wouldn’t come up with anything that could get past Lizzy who had another great period gobbling up loose pucks and playing very solid in the nets.
The red would cap it off with under a minute left when Mark Reynolds would finish a play from Daley and Goody that would put a wrap on this one 6-1 Red and the teams would adjourn to the parking lot for the apres skate portion of the evening.
Matty laid out another spectacular 6 foot sub, which would be complimented by Miran’s freakingawesome brownies, and copious amounts of oat sodas brought from a number of people. Kudos to the new guys for hanging out and coming out to play with us for the summer. Big props to rookie Neil Shah who looks like an interesting talent… plus he brought his girlfriend… which is always welcome.

Game Stars

3rd Star: Professor Mike Daley.
Covers ground. Scores goals, gets assists, and generally affects the play every shift he’s on the ice.
2nd Star: Rookie (to us) Mike “Goody” Goodwin. 2 goals and an assist to really seal the game for the Red. Great work, and welcome.
1st Star: Got to be the Gal in the pipes. Fresh off a break from a frustrating winter season, Lizzy turned out a gem last night, jumping on loose pucks, staying square to the play and in general just playing good hockey. Thanks Liz, great work and a well deserved #1 star.

Overheard in the parking lot:
(while watching Campbell demo his snazzy iPhone) “If I had a cock, I’d have a hard on right now.” … I think Jasse lost some beer out his nose on that one…

Good work everyone. Stay tuned for schedule updates.

Actually I was the last D. First time in 12 years I've played that spot.
