Sunday Payback Daveur Suds Return the Favor

Schlitz (17) vs Cadavers (14)
Sunday January 4th
Milton Academy 6pm

Schlitz 6
Cadavers 5

A festive back to school feeling for the Sunday Davuer this time as the Holiday break ends and everyone goes back to school and work on Monday the 5th. Another early evening affair at the nice digs at Milton Academy for a rematch daveur from the Tuesday before. Essentially the same teams with a few drops and additions to round the night out. Again we had a rousing contest that was close the whole night with good strong battles going on all over the ice... even had some tempers flare, and some crowd participation(heckling), and even an after party... lets face it... wait for it... this one had it all.
Here is your rematch roster breakdown...
Cads
Cambell, DWH; Daley, Elliott
Roman, Chuck, Parker
Hammitt, Mike Fitz, Ken

Suds
Jeff, Matvey; Valenti, Pearlman
Larry, Jasse and Reynolds
Ken Douville, Scott, and Carl

Billy Pearlman was nice enough to bring 3 of his kids to fill in as hecklers, and bless their hearts were off to an early start during warmups, already all over Mike Hammitt. I believe as I took the ice I heard them taunting Hammitt with "Hey, no figure skaters!" Now dont think this rattled Mike, he goes way back with Billy and his loudmouth... ahem boisterous kids, one of them is his godchild. No kidding. They rode him all night like only kids can. Way to go kids.

The game started off very well, with good brisk play from both squads. Clearly the Zebras were along for the ride and weren't calling it too close as the teams settled in and started to grind away at each other. Again the gold tried to scale the stout Red D, but had little success in the early going.
This thing was tough going for a long time. Both keepers made good stops at both ends and the game was spirited. During the course of the night there would be plenty of good battles for the puck. The Gold would strike first but not after a truckload of hard work trying to break through.
Mike Jasse would finish a beauty of a tick tack toe from Larry and Reynolds. This line was just getting started. Larry was a big lift to the Goldshirts as he was an unexpected arrival, now the Double Dad of two lovely little girls (see forthcoming post) and was able to sneak away for a quick skate. Great to have him and his work with Jass and Mark would decide the game.
The Red wasn't backing down a bit and would break through with a killer goal from Kevin Parker with under a minute remaining. The Gold was back on their heels and let up a tough one.
The period would end 1-1. Somewhere in there Dr. Pounds went off for a trip... no blood.
The second would go Red first and Chuck Slate would pot the next goal and put the Zombies ahead. Another bad breakdown for the gold.
They would answer however, and tie it up again when Marc Valenti would land a nice shot from the point through traffic. Feed from Larry. At this point we are about halfway through the second and the Zombies would hold onto the lead when DWH would make a strong rush and follow it up with a close and deadly wrister that kept them up 3-2.

The Gold would turn up the energy and momentum then, and they would finally break through with some offense. We need to mention here first, that Lizzy held them off for some time. There was a 3-4 minutes streach where she put down Larry alone on a break away, Jasse on the doorstep, and Valenti from the point to hold the lead. She was definitly playing well and was all over it keeping her team in it. The Gold would make it happen though and Mike Jasse would complete the natural trick with 2 quick goals, one from Larry and one from Reynolds, both great follow ups that would give the Gold a nice 4-3 advantage at the end of time in the second.
Another by the way mention has to be Ken Douville playing for the Schlitz, he was a spark all night doing some excellent forchecking on the Red D and forcing the play all over the place. Great work all night, even though it didn't show on the scoresheet.

The Gold would continue the momentum and Larry himself would put one home from Mark and then Mark would follow up with one of his own from Valenti to start off the third and the Gold suddenly had a 6-3 lead. But the game was not over yet.
The Cadavers had a bunch of chances of thier own and certainly didn't dissapear. Roman had a bunch of almosts, and Parker was just tough to contain at any time. But the Zombie resurgence would suffer from manpower as the penalties started to happen in the third. Matvey went first for the gold for a check, but the gold would kill. Hammitt would be right behind him for the Red for an interference... something to do with Pearlman... and then Campbell would go shortly after giving the gold the dreaded 5-3 advantage with a 3 goal lead. This of course led to a shorthanded goal by... Kevin Parker who buried a beautiful pass from Mike Daley.
Moments later Zombie pride would show again when Ken/Mitch, not afraid to lock horns with the best of em, took on Pearlman in his own end and dropped him with a hip check on the far boards. I kid you not. I saw it with my own eyes. Kenny later would say he got the worst of it later on... something about "your mass is greater than mine" ... but man he took him out. Not even a look from the Zeebs.

Anyway the funny thing here is that now down only 2 the Red had trouble leaving the box on time as Hammitt was being distracted by Pearlman's kids outside the glass. Brilliant. Again, great work kids. Hammitt would go late but the gaffe was covered by the zebras who arbitrarily ended Campbell's penalty and evened up the sides after the shorthanded goal. Weird, but funny.
Hammitt wouldn't be done making noise, and it wasn't more than a shift or two tops later that he ended up in anohter tangle with Pearlman and gets the gate again. This time his mouth wrote him a ticket off the ice as the Zebra tired of his explanations and gave him his walking papers. The thunderous heckling from Pearlman's kids was epic. He stood there steaming watching the game...
Which would get tighter as it wound down. The Cads built off the momentum from the shorthander and wouldn't you know it, DWH would land another one with just under a minute to play in the game. The Red swarmed and pulled Lizzy but the Gold would hold and the night would go to the Suds in a 6-5 bahn-burnah.
Great work by all involved. We may even have some pics from the Pearlmans to add to the blog later on...
Game Stars
3rd Star: Kevin Parker for a goal and an assist, and good solid work for the Zombies all night. Could easily have made this one DWH (2 goals) or Mike Daley (2 assists) all three are deserving.

2nd Star: Larry Double Duty Bell. An unexpected surprise and a wicked 4 point night that propelled the Gold to victory. Nice to see Larry, and to hear that all the girls at home are doing great. Congrats again Larry, and great job on the ice!

1st Star: Michael (Somebody Call Me a) Doctor Jasse. A fantastic night with 3 great goals, and just great work with his line all night. Way to go Doc... we are awfully glad you decided to come.
Honorable mentions (as seen above) to Lizzy, Ken Douville, and the Pearlman kids. Also I'd like to add the always tough to play against DWH, Daley, and Chuck who all had good contributions for the Zombie squad.
Lizzy had something to add the next day and sent in this pic as evidence of... well I quote "what a p*ssy Valenti is". She took this one from one of Marc's patented slappers and looks like it... ah... stings a bit. Hope you feel better soon babe.
After the game Chuck and Danielle Slate were nice enough to offer thier place nearby for a little apres skate. There was low attendance on account of Monday being the big back to school back to work day but it was a nice hang nonetheless. Thanks again to them for the offer. Here are some pics from the sort 4th period.

Kevin and Gloucester the dog were... ahem... friendly.

Superstar Jackie Slate and her sparkly Santa hat with a handfull of chips before bed!
