4-0 loss

Almost total radio silence on this one... as could be expected. No scoring and just a handfull of penalties. However not only does he run the teams but he also occasionally throws the Blogger a bone and guest stars right here. This is from CEO Kilroy:

"Last night 4-0 loss, I think. First goal SOFT. Bad Matt. 2’nd and 3’rd goals definitely harder but stoppable. I don’t remember the 4th.

Campbell had an epic collision with a player on their team. The collision was at the opponents blue line. I was watching the puck from our end admiring the graceful ebb and flow of total movement, keeping an eye on the center of the gold and red whirlwind and letting my peripheral vision take in the outskirts. No doubt you would question the use of the word ‘graceful’ because, as we are all well aware, the components of the flow are comprised of individual hacking/smashing/falling middle aged D league, but the big picture is a bit graceful. I did not see the actual collision, but just as the puck pulled the center of the whirlwind to the left there was a sudden and violent stoppage of movement in the pucks wake, accompanied by a small shock wave that passed through the arena.

There were no tangential forces deflecting movement and body parts as happens with an angled collision, there was only full-on hard-hitting physics denying the occupation of the same space by two solid objects. They both went down, both got up, both took a second to run an internal diagnostic for broken parts, and then enjoyed the instant camaraderie that comes with cooperatively (or luckily) averting major harm.

An early night and a good matchup in Milton last night as Team Zombie faced off against division rival El Tigre. The Tiger has had the best of our little rivalry the last few seasons and this one has been no exception. Last week we dropped a heartbreaker 2-1 to these guys.

Roman, Matvey, Larry, Hammitt, George, Greg, Kevin, Chuck, Dave, Mark R, Ken G, Goody, Steve, and Lizzie in Net is about what I have for a roster.

Here is guestblogger Greg James with a quick recap:

"Lost a tough one. We had a strong team, but the tigers worked a little bit harder on the boards and in the corners. I think the final score was 2:1. Lizzy was solid despite still recovering from her surgery. Dave DiLorretto is the new Mike Campbell in terms of the box. Opponents just have to stop bumping into him and falling down..., and no beer in the parking lot after the game."

"Well, we would have had more goals if Larry didn't enjoy admiring the very clear view of the puck's flight trajectory into the corner instead of to the net, but I digress...I had 2 penalties... 0 points Seriously, we had plent o' chances just didn't convert"

Sounds like another tough one for the Dead in Red. We have to get over on those guys... maybe the playoffs. Thanks for the words guys.

Rosters for Next Week. Threefur!

Here are the preliminary rosters for next week's Threefur of games. Please let Managment know as soon as possible if you have a conflict. Let's be sure to get a solid turn out for each game. This is a good group of games against three teams that play us very close. We had a wing-ding against El Tigre last week and a tough one against the Bluesers the week before. Let's be sure to exact some revenge... eh?

This week's photo comes to you from the team that was skating after us in Quincy on Monday night. This is one of the greatest Men's league hockey team jersey's I've ever seen. A nice shade of yellow with the sillouette of a stripper. The name of the team... The Pumps. Sponsored by a Strip club called... Pumps. I freaking love it. This is almost as good as the Flying Nutbags shirts that Parker showed us a while back. Dead in Yellow down the Preds

Game one of a dava double headah was an early start in the City of Presidents. An early affair against a club that according to the crew we’ve played before… but the blogger will be darned if he can remember it. Regardless the Cadavers showed up and wore yellow so we played as the dead in yellow for no particular reason, hopefully we wont throw off the league office when the scoresheets come in.
The Cads in Yellow were well represented with a nice round 10 players. It broke down like this.
D1: Roman (yes that Roman) and Steve Baker
D2: Dave Diloretto and Jeff Fosdick
O1: Larry, Nelson, and iJosh
O2: Angry Ken, Mitch, and Dr.Pounds

The game would really be decided in the first period and Larry would set the tone right off the oppening draw. Larry beat his man, turned the d and shot, Nelson and Josh kept it in and in less than a minute Nelson fed Larry who would bang it home for the 1-0 lead. Things were looking good. The Preds had a couple of good skaters but they were on one of the forward lines and it looked like they had at least three lines of players over there. The D was, well, not their best players and it looked good for the Red/Gold early. Of course the Yellow jerseys come with the usual attention from the zebras and we took a couple of penalties a few minutes after the first goal.
Baker would go for a trip (on their best player)
Jeff would go a minute later for a trip also. That left a breif 5-3 that the Gold killed off well. Of course the Green was gaining a bit of momentum, and when the penalties had expired they were able to break through with a goal that Brian didn’t have any help on.
Not to be outdone, Larry would take the faceoff and again turn the pylon defenders and plunk it home unassisted to put the good guys back on top. This would be followed within 2 minutes by a nice goal by iJosh, again from Nelson, and in the closing minute of the period Jeff would step up into the play in the neutral zone and went in on a breakaway that he finished by going 5 hole on the shakey keeper for a very nice 4-1 lead at the end of one period.

The second would see Nelson grabbing a goal from iJosh who was returning the favor, then Larry would complete his Hat Trick, again fed from Nelson, and Dave Di. Sporting a comfortable 6-1 lead the Dead in Gold got just a tiny bit complacent and the Green would land another one and held off the blow out to make it 6-2.

The third period would start off with Larry scoring his fourth goal of the game, this one from Jeff. There was more than a little banter about Larry being motivated by Jasse’s 4 goal night last week, and knowing Larry, it may not be too far from the truth. Whatever it was Larry was all over the ice last night. He had no fewer than 3 tremendous backchecks on their best player, to go along with all the scoring.
The Green would score another one, amazingly not on the power play as both Steve and Dave Di would go during the third for tripping. Steve would make up for it with a really nifty break away and wicked shot that capped the night off at 8-3.

Great effort all the way around. It didn’t show on the score sheet but it needs to be mentioned that the line of AK, Mitch and the Doc was very productive and came very close on more than a handful of opportunities. Also notable was the very solid Defensive play by Mr. Roman Kurin. Our Radical Russian deserves big kudos for not only volunteering for the position, but for good effort and solid play all night.

Game Stars
3rd Star: Hrm…hard to pick. I’m going with the Defensive corps. Roman for chipping in. Steve for a goal. Dave for a helper and really playing shut down all night, and Jeff for a goal and an assist.
2nd Star: Nelson “just doing my job” Sharfman. A quiet 4 point night for the cagey vet, with 3 assists and a goal. Its just something to watch the man work, shift after shift, season after season.

1st Star: Larry “anything you can do I can do better” Bell. a very nice game all the way around and 4 goals to really pad the stats. Larry was a force all night. Great work.

Just a quick note on last week's business. Everyone on both squads has been asking about Chris and he is doing much better. Everyone sends their best wishes and thoughts bro, we are all thinking about you.

Also here is a pic that iJosh grabbed of half the team in the penalty box. Shame it isn't clearer... it would make a nice banner for the blog from now on. Its pretty hard to win when 40% of the roster is in the box and busy yelling at the zeebs. Some of those calls were crap, to be sure, we just can't let our mouths blow the game for us...

The second game of the Monday night Davah Double was over in our other Home rink Canton. Management knew that it might be tough to get two full squads for a game on Monday right after a big holiday weekend, and the suspicion proved to be legit. There were quite a few drop outs and no shows, that are all understandable given all the beer, burgers and fun that was surely had by everyone over the weekend. With that in mind, the CEO asked a few guys to double up if they felt up to it. So the trio of Roman, Dave Di, and Jeff Fosdick would change in Quincy and boogie over to Canton to lace em up for the Suds in the nightcap. Good thing. with those 3 we made another even 10.

This game would not be the high scoring affair that the first one was. Not even close. This game would be a very nip and tuck, close to the vest kind of thing with our old “friends” El Tigre. They are about the same as they always are. Their talent skates the right D and wears number 8 and the Gold did a lot of chasing of that dude all night. Also noteable are regulars #18 and #55 both with Panthers jerseys like #8, and those two seemed like they were infront of Kirloy or crashing into him all night.

The Gold would play a up and down first period that was not without its chances and mistakes. Kilroy in general turned in another very solid performance and made some very nice stops in the opening frame that kept things under control. The Red would have one penalty in the first, but the Gold couldn't do a thing with the PP and the period would end 0-0 with a feeling that the game would be very tight the rest of the way.

The Red would open the second with another penalty but again no blood from the Beercans. That is until Kevin Parker would wrist one home from Roman and Chuck that would put the 'Cans up on top 1-0 with 8 minutes to go in the 2nd. The Gold would then pick up thier first penalty of the game about a minute later when Dave Diloretto would go for a hold. Sketchy. Interestingly enough the Red wouldn't score on the power play but did break through at the 4:30 mark beating Matty to even things up. The second would end 1-1.

So... observant reader of the blog. You know whats coming next right? You know what our rep is right? You know that as the game stayed tight and things got chippy, the whistles started coming, and the mouths started running. Diloretto would go again at the begining of the period. Then all hell broke loose when George would have a battle with Old 55 behind our net in which they exchanged some pleasantries and stickwork. On the way to the box George had a few things for the Zebra to consider... and 55 would go as a match.

But that was it. The dam was broken and leaking. Reynolds would go next 30 seconds later. Then Diloretto less than a minute after that. A bogus call that meant Dave was done for the night and he let the Zeebs know how he felt. Howard would serve that one.

So there we were, in a very tight game, now down 5 on 3 with one D man ejected and 2 in the box. Jeff would hack at #8 and got mostly puck but was called for a trip like 10 seconds later. So now we were still 5 on 3 but all three remaining D in the box. The Gold played admirabley on the kill. Namely Parker, Roman, Capraro and Kilroy doing strong work to keep the game tied. By the time we were all even again there was less than 4 minutes to play.

The attrition was too much. Too many plays where we got caught running around, Roman and Jeff were out of gas given that they had played two full games at this point, and the worst possible thing happened. (well maybe not the worst ... but you know what I mean). The Tigers would score on a screen shot after a long scramble in our end at the :50 second mark.

Blech.

A good effort, but not really very consistant play on the Beercans part and a tough loss in the waning seconds to a club we could have stolen one from.

No Game Stars, but honorable mentions to Matt for another solid game in net, and Dave, Romand and Jeff who played both games of the double header and are surely feeling it today. Well... I'm feeling it today.

7-0 WIN!



The Blogger is glad to report 2 things. The first is that he is finally starting to catch up on his "side-job" as team blogger and again apologises for the backlog. The Second (which is even better) is that Uber Guest Blogger iJosh is on the ball with a terrific game story from the Lobsters game from last Thursday.

Here's iJosh with a recap of the action:

"Over the last year or so the Lobsters, with the exception of one hard fought tie, have had our number. So if I told you that one team would be outnumbered, out hustled, out defended and just out played, which team would you think I was talking of? Well SURPRISE!!! You probably
didn't guess correctly. Yes boys and girls this one was a one sided
game in our favor and it was a wire to wire team effort.

So the rainy Thursday night game started with a full squad of 12. The Dead in Yellow's (we are playing the Lobsters so the Cads would don the yellow jerseys this night) defensive group consisted of: Capt George, Stephen Baker, Dave Di and Kevin Parker. The offense would be set with:
Larry and Roman as centers with the wing pairs of: Jasse and iJosh; Ken Douville and Matvey; Dr. Pounds and KenMitch.

But this wasn't without a sour feeling as two days before fellow teammate Chris Fosdick was put on the DL after having surgery to repair a broken wrist from the previous game. He was in our thoughts and just before the game began some guy sauntered into the locker room and started a little speech. Some old guy. His name might have been Nat or Ned or maybe Knute. Anyway he said: "I just came from visiting Chris and he told me: 'sometime, when the team is up against it -- and the breaks usually beat the boys -- tell them to go out there with all they got and win just one for the Chrisser. I don't know where I'll be then', he said, 'but I'll read the blog the next day - and I'll be happy'"

So motivation in hand, the first shift promptly set the tone. Off the face-off the puck would bounce around the neutral zone and back to the defense. The defense would send a pass to iJosh just beyond the red line, who hit a streaking Larry Bell. Larry took the puck deep, made the pass to Jasse, who got sort of caught on his own stick and started to lose his balance and control. But the Jasseman would keep himself in control just long enough to get off the shot before collapsing into a heap in the crease and sliding into the scrum. The puck would find its way into the net for a very quick 1-0 lead. Then the Lobsters would get the one and only penalty of the game, a "too many men on the ice"
penalty that is usually reserved for the fine players of Schlidaveurs.
Play would go back and forth a bit and the Cads seemed to be giving up the puck and not necessarily making the best of passes. But the defense and Brian would bail them out a bit. But a few shifts later, Jasse would strike again. This time he would net one from Roman and iJosh, who fell to the ice and found a way to send the puck to Roman without using his hands, giving the Zombies a 2-0 lead. Play would continue to be inconsistent, but at the end of the period the score would be 2-0 Yellow.

Second verse, just like the first...and I mean that in a good way. The Schli...er Cads continued to take it to the Lobsters. Playing with a 2-0 lead the Cads hoped not to give up the gritty play and or the momentum that so often eludes us. And they would not lose it as Larry would send a backhand to iJosh, who would send a back pass to Jasse, who would send the backhand back to Bell, who would backhand the black disc into the back of the net. 3-0 Cadavers. So two shifts or so later, the Jasseman would continue to play inspired hockey. This time Dave Di would rotate deep into the offensive zone. Jasse would cover the point. Dave would make an attempt and then would slide the puck back to the point where Jasse would wrist a BEEE-EAUTIFUL shot past the keeper short side. 4-0 Dead. Then Roman felt the need to get involved as he would put one in from Parker and Dave Di. That would close out the 2nd period and the Zombies would take a 5 goal pad into the 3rd.

The third would be a bit more defensive. The Lobsters, I am sure, did not want to lose to us. Especially not like this. They were a bit steamed. The were trying to claw back and made some hits. But the Cads would not give in and played level-headed hockey. In one shift I swear Matvey was going to retaliate after being knocked to the ice. Nope he didn't. Then I though Ken D would do something after taking a check.
Again nope. And so the Cads were able to continue their assault. This time Mr. Bell would take a pass from Roman and rush toward the net.
Over on the bench Jasse turned and declared, "He is going backhand". Lo and behold, Larry would go top side on his backhand to pretty much put this game away. But Jasse, already with the hat trick was getting addicted and needed his next hit, I mean goal. This time he would take a pass from iJosh and Larry as he put it away for his 4th of the game.
This would round out the scoring and as the horn sounded, we looked up and saw a 7-0 win.

This blog has been mostly about scoring, since there was so much of it.
However the defense from the goalie to the D-men to the entire team defense was just in tune almost all night. I'm not saying we didn't have breakdowns. We did. But there was always the one person to pick up the slack (thanks Brian mostly). There were also at least 5 pucks that hit the post. 2 or 3 from us. So this could have been a 7-2 or a 9-0 game depending on a centimeter here or there. All in all just a great game. The beer, provided by Larry and iJosh, tasted good especially after a win like this. But Jasse wouldn't know as he is on a 28 day program or so and is without beer. You make the assumption.

Stars for the Game:
3rd Star: Brian for his shutout and the Team Defense: There are just so many people to give stars to tonight. But without the overall effort of the team defensively, this could have gone the other way against a team like the Lobsters.

2nd Star: Larry Bell for a 2 goal, 2 assist night. He helped set the tone and made the right moves at the right time.

1st Star: You know him, you love him, you think he's in outpatient rehab, but it is really a workout regiment, Mike Jasse for his 4 goal, 1 assist night that was just awesome. "

Trying to catch up.

Sorry team the blogger has just not been able to keep up lately.
There has been some action since last posting.

A loss last Thursday to the Scapegoats 2-1.
Reynolds with the only goal unassisted.(see below for post 6/26)

A loss to the blues on Tuesday 4-3 to the Blues (see below for post)
... the big story there is veteran forward Chris Fosdick broke his right forearm on his first shift. Then spent the night in Norwood Hospital and had surgery the next day.
Good news is Chris is doing fine and even has some new equipment... mainly a plate and four screws in his repaired arm. Hell... can we officially call him a cyborg now?
Anyway early word is that the game Thursday night was a big success 7-0 we will have to wait on a guestblog on that one. Anyone with info on the Tuesday night loss to the blues would be much appreciated. I should be able to catch up when I get back from the holiday weekend.


Dont forget to check your email because we have double games (both teams in action, separate rinks) on Monday night.

Well the blogger doesn't have a lot to run on with this one. The CEO in the pipes was able to forward me the stats for the game and you will see them below. The big story of the night was that Chris Fosdick broke his arm on his first shift. This was apparently the result of an awkward fall after some contact from a Blue defenseman. Dr. Jasse was heard commenting that he was on the ice and 5 feet away from him and didn't have any idea what had happened until Greg James called the ref over to get an ambulance.

Big Kudos to Mr. James for assisting Chris in getting undressed and to the ambulance. A true teammate move by Greg. Chris was in a lot of pain and was very grateful to have the help.
Despite an overnight at Norwood Hospital and surgery the next afternoon Chris was seen (breifly) over the holiday weekend in pretty good spirits, and significantly less pain. Here's to a speedy recovery... but the reality is we've lost a quality forward for at least 8 weeks.

The only other story line here is that the Suds were leading this game 3-2 with less than 10 minutes remaining and ended up falling to the Blues 4-3 in the waning moments. Frustrating. Especially against those guys.

This was the pic Chris sent me while waiting for surgery on Wednesday morning.

Um... ow.

Chris just checked in with an account of how this went down. Here he is:

"The story: As you now we were getting great pressure on them that 1st shift. I had been in scrum in front of the net and flipped the puck toward a yawning net, when the sprawling goalie made an unbelievable stop with the tip of his outstreched glove. They got control behind the net, and I started moving back (toward our end), when their Defenceman tried to make a breakout pass that I intercepted in my skates, bounced out to my stick and I turned and whipped a shot at the net from the middle slot. Simultaneously, their other defenceman hit me from behind (remember I was aleady spinning to get that shot off), and as I fell my whole body was spinning. So, my right hand which is my downstick hand was away from my body and was accelerated as I spun and crashed down with all the force of my body and the spinning motion right on my hand (I was still holding onto the stick, which I think may have added to the shock). So, both bones broke about an inch above my wrist (thank god). Now they are plated and screwed together, and feeling much better. It still is a major pain in the ass, and I don't recommend it to anyone."

This is the only info I have on this one. Short and sweet from Captain Mark Reynolds and just a few words from power forward Chris Fosdick. Anyone with something to add is more than welcome to add it in the comments section or email me directly. Here's Mark:
"The Goats got the better of the Red last evening by a score of 2-1.

The Red played a tight game against an evenly matched opponent, but it just wasn’t enough. We definitely had our share of scoring chances and close calls.

BMF Kilroy between the pipes was outstanding and kept the game close. Kilroy faced a deluge of odd man rushes and played the angles perfectly. His glove hand was on fire.

Defense:
Campbell – Reynolds
George – Steve

Forwards:
iJosh – Kenny – Hammitt
Pete – Nelson – The Dr
Chris F – Goody – Parker

With all the “Lady Bing” candidates in this lineup, the penalties were surprisingly few. Both teams played a clean game.

Our lone goal originated with a Goat turnover in the neutral zone that we capitalized on. As George likes to say, “take away the opponent’s passing lanes”.

Ouch, no beers last night. Talk about painful.

Suds fall to Shellfish

4-3 Loss


A tough night but a good skate at BU against team Shellfish. Always nice to lace them up at the old Walter Brown Arena, a lot of good memories for the blogger in that shabby old cave. Unfortunately this game against the Lobsters wouldn’t be competeing for room with any of those good memories.
The Suds showed in good numbers and had a nice lineup to face the new look Lobsters who’ve clearly found the right formula for them with a pair of dynamic ladies anchored by a very solid C level half shield dude on D. They have been tough to beat for us since they’ve had the pickups and haven’t won many against them.
I think any cough reasonable analysis of the situation would reveal two things. First we have trouble with fast skating forwards who can stickhandle, and secondly we are old and prone to spending time in the penalty box. And we’re old.
The Suds looked like this.

There was reasonable, if not unfounded optimitsm going into the game and the Suds did an admirable job of jumping to the play and taking it to the Lobsters in the early going. It was clear very early on that our work would be cut out for us as we chased around the girls in the magenta shirts. We even were the benefactor of the first three whistles of the game as the Lobsters were called for the first group of infractions. The Power Play didn’t net any results but the game had a good pace and the Suds were holding their own.
It didn’t take long for two things to change. First we started making mistakes on D and in general, and second we began a litteral parade to the sin bin. The breakdowns gave the Lobsters a 2 goal lead about halfway through the period. Not much Matty could do on either of them, the first a long break by the tall girl who just ripped a wrist shot, the second an extended pass around the zone affair. No glory for the Gold until Mark Reynolds would land a hard work chance fed by Nelson and the Suds would stay in the game at 2-1. Before the end of the first the Lobsters would strike once more and the first would end 3-1.
The play was fairly fiesty back and forth. Mark and their star 7 had a few things to say to each other as the second period got going. The Suds were showing good heart, skating hard, taking short shifts, Matty was playing very well all night. Dave Diloretto jumped into the play a few times trying to create chances. At one point the puck came loose at the top of the zone while Dave was still low, Jeff jumped up to stop the puck and fed it back to Dave who fired a brilliant shot that pulled the Suds back within one. It wasn’t too long after that that the offense would answer as well when Larry would score, again on a feed from Nelson. Their line did a great job all night and had buckets of chances.
So dig this. The game is now tied 3-3 and the teams are exhaustedly going after it at a good pace. Then the parade begins.

And this was all before the end of the second period. This did include at least one 5 on 3 streach of more than a minute.
The Lobsters, amazinly enough wouldn’t capitalize until just seconds left in the period. That was a credit to Matthew who is rounding into a very nice regular keeper. He was all over the place and made a number of excellent stops. Despite the work of the CEOBMF the Red would score with less than a minute on a long scramble and breakdown in our end and the second would end 4-3 Red.
The third was just no bargain. The suds tried and tried to get over on the Red but there was nothing doing. Some good chances but 77 would make a trip… for a trip and the coup de grace would be old bonehead #10 with just under 3 minutes to play as he would perform a discreet mugging on one of the magenta shirts as she broke to the net. Jeff hauled her down and took the final penalty of the night and would effectively end the Suds hopes. There were a few good chances in the last minute, we even pulled Matty but no dice.
Kudos for the effort to everyone all the way around, but it would really be nice to get them the next time around.

We didn't have much luck with the Lobsters or the 'goats in the past couple of seasons. Also I'm sure many of you are looking forward to next week and a reunion match up with Les Blues.

Here are some excellent guest blog comments on the game from Monday night. Sounds like a really good game for the good guys against a team that usually gives us fits. Here are your story lines from the guys who were there.

Lets start off with a nice contribution from Larry Bell:

Last night we earned a hard-fought 2-1 victory over the Tigers. We had some new recruits who played a vital role on defense - my friend Matt Parabicoli, and Lizzie's friend Adam. They were the two best skaters on the ice, and controlled the play from D. The Tigers had #8 and some scrappers on offense but their time in our zone was limited.

The lines were:
D1: Steve and Adam
D2: Mark and Matt
Nelson and I were the two centers with wing pairs:W1: Matvey and Roman
W2: Hammit and Angry Ken
W3: Dr Pounds and Howard
Schlitz struck first in period 1 - Adam (unassisted). I didn't see the goal, but this guy had no problems skating the puck into the Tigers zone and getting shots off all night. Matvey nearly put us up 2-0 on the PK as heintercepted the puck deep in the Tigs zone, moved into the slot and ripped a shot right into the goalie's midsection.

The Tigers came back to tie it up in the second. Their was a delayed penalty on the Suds and the Tiger's goalie went off the ice for an extra skater. The gold were running around in our own zone when a shot from the point was deflected in by a high stick. Apparently the refs did not see whose stick it deflected off, so they allowed the goal and negated the penalty.

Between the 2nd and 3rd, the little ref was giving me some pointers on my skating. This paid off early in the third as I broke in 2-1 with Roman. I tried to pass across to Roman who was knocked down by the D and went sprawling toward the net. The Tiger's D-man gave the puck right back to me and my second pass attempt went into the net for a 2-1 lead. We held on for a 2-1 win.
Those vying for the Campbell award included Mark for Interference in the 1st and Roman for a high stick in the 2nd."

Here is Dr. Pounds with another excellent recap

"Bottom line was a 2-1 win us. Their goalie was good. We had many chances in tight. Our goalie was better. The only score against us comes with an asterisk. The Tigers got the puck in deep with numbers and got a couple of chances, then the puck was put in from the point - shoulder high – and one of the Tigers batted at it and it bounced down and in. Clearly a high stick, and the goal was initially called off. After the refs talked it over, though, they let the goal stand. It seems that one ref clearly saw the high stick but could not tell which player was wielding said lumber, so it could have been the Schlitz. It wasn’t, believe me. The other ref only saw the puck go in.

Lizzie had one save that would have made the ESPN highlight reel. A Tiger ripped off a pretty good low shot from just inside the blue line that was headed for the near post. Lizzie kicked it up and out of the rink. In the old Garden it would have had a chance to make it into the balcony.

One of the refs was good enough to give Larry some skating tips. Something about moving your limbs forward and not so much side to side. Ten Lady Byng points to Larry for letting that go.

We ended up with no waters, but Adam brought a 30 pack of Bud Light into the locker room, so we were able to rehydrate properly after the game."

Here's Captain Mark Reynolds with a few comments to add.

Gold controlled the play for ¾ game and had lots of opps.

The Tiger’s lone goal was up for dispute. A Tiger high stick knocked it in, but the zebras were confused and awarded the point, 1-1. No worries for the Gold. We knew we’d get another, and we did.

#1 – Lizzy – another great game inside the pipes – and did not utter any profanity
I find that last one hard to believe... but sound good.

Wow team... this one is already a week old and I dont have any stories to tell on this one, but it looks like it was a good night at the rink. Abley backstopped by CEO BMF Mad Matt Kilroy the Suds put the Whoop on the newbies of the division with a great 7-2 win.

All I can tell you is what has been reported from the scoresheet. Namely that Larry had 2 goals and 2 assists on the night... nice to see him returning to his SW ways, Nelson had a Hat Trick (like a Timex...)and Pete Capraro with a goal and 2 helpers to round out the night. Newcomer Steve Baker potted 2 goals as well, already showing that this season's rookie of the year race is going to be one to watch.

Great job to everyone... and anyone willing to comment or give us a tale or two please feel free. In the absence of that... here are the stats.

6-1 loss.

A tough night at the rink for the Dead in Red against a crew we haven't played often, and have certainly not had much luck against. The Cones had at least 2 full plus some and clearly have played together for a while. They are your typical High-D team with a few very good players and a bunch of grinders like us. Notabley the defense, especially the dude with the yellow helmet were excellent and proved to be more than a match for the Dead in Red.

The Dead had a good turn out but were short on regular defensemen again. Mike Hammitt and George manned one pair while Jeff and Kevin Parker (when he arrived) manned the other. Forwards included Chris, Nelson, iJosh, Ken, Neil Shah, Larry, Pete, Howard, ..... crap... I have to go find the game notes. Matt in Net.

Here is what it boiled down to. Matt played a great night in net. We were only losing 1 or 2-0 after the first, and only 3-0 after 2 periods. The Red played reasonably well but were clearly fighting an uphill battle against a good team. As soon as we made a few mistakes they jumped all over us and took advantage. The first one Jeff failed to clear and the guy just pounded it home from short range, the second was a wicked shot on a short breakaway... or something like that.
The good news is we did crack the Orange end and Nelson (who else) scored in the third to make it 4-1 at the time... I think.

As the game wore on, our old legs got the best of us and before the end it was 6-1 and looking pretty grim for the Cadavers. Only a few trips to the box and not much to speak of there. All around a dis-satisfying night at the rink.

Kudos to Mike Hammitt, and I think Neil for beer after the game. Good night of summer hockey...even CEO Kilroy found out what all the hype over BL Lime was....

Hey there team. Things have already piled back up on the Blogger, and after a Sunday- Monday combo, plus the game from Thursday last week, I'm three games behind. Crap!


So here's the deal. Since I like my job, I'm going to be tied up most of the day, but I'll have game stories on all three plus upcoming action within the next day (24hrs).

The fast and dirty is this.

Win on Thursday 7-2! Loss on Sunday 6-1. Win on Monday 2-1!

Now. The Blogger did not attend the Thursday win 7pm Suds vs. D-Minus... and I don't have a single game story or even a quote to run on other than the one line from winning goalkeep MKilroy. If you skated last thursday and remember anything that happend... send me an email... please.


Looks like i've already got a game story from last night so we are going to be ok there... and if my own memory serves me (iffy) I can scrape something together from Sunday.

Zombies and Jacks Grind it up.

1-0 Loss



Some of the new look 'daveurs gathered last night in Canton to take on occasional rival the Inglewood Jacks. The Jacks have had the better of us the last few times we've played them and frankly they are the type of team that usually gives us trouble. The majority of the roster is average guys like most of us, but they clearly have a few gems. They have two guys with Harvard shirts one better than the other, both rock solid. This complemented by a "you know the type" no shield dude with the home made number on a filthy old generic white shirt. Number 17, red seven , black one. He would make a few nice moves, but didn't ever take over the game thanks to the hard working Dead in Red. Speaking of... There were some late arrivals as per usual now that the summer Southeast Expressway Paving is in full swing... but this is what we looked like.

Big props to Hammitt for legging it out on D for the whole first period. Once again we seemed to be a little bit short on regular D skaters for this one. Hamm did a good job and held the fort ably until Kevin Parker showed up. Kudos also to Chris "I'd rather be playing wing" Fosdick for sucking it up and playing very solid defense all night long. Parker also turned in a number of good shifts in his time working with Steve "gotta pick up a cage" Baker who has been yet another plus added to the combined 'daveur roster this season.
This was all backstopped by Brian "Government Bailout" Carey who was doing his best to bail us out all night whenever he was tested. Another very solid night overall for Brian. Don't look now but all three goalies have played very well here in the early going... its a shame we dont have a win or two more to show for it.
The game was tight. There were some solid chances on both sides, and both keepers seemed to jump right into form as the game heated up. So aside from a hand full of chances and stops there wasn't much more to report from the first. Except for a costly breakdown by the Red with 2 and half minutes left. Jeff would pinch on the left and miss badly on trying to intercept the outlet. That left brother Chris with a 2-1 and not much help. He left the shooter but the shot was wicked and beat Brian up high and put the Jacks up by 1. By the time the last shifts were taken in the opening frame, iJosh, Mitch and Parker had joined the fray and we settled into the three full configuration. Down 1-0 after the first.
The second was just a flat out grind. Good chances. Hard work. Zombie pride saw the red slowly work the momentum of the game to their favor as everyone did a good job of keeping the legs moving and the shifts short. Its the blogger's opinion that if we keep playing like this the results will come... we kept expecting them last night... we just couldn't grasp them.
There were a few more breakdowns but none as costly as the one in the first. There was a sketchy outlet from Brian to Jeff that nearly resulted in a goal, if not for a "superman" move by B-Care to save us and himself.
The Red had a few really good chances in the Second and the momentum was clearly on our side by the end of the period, just no goals to show for it. Neil just missed on a very nice tip play. There was another quality set up or two and nice cycles from the forwards but time and again the Jack's goalie stood up to the task. As time expired in the Second Larry would go for an elbow along the boards, called by our longtime friend and colleague... Butterball.
The Red were up to the task of the PK and proceeded to kill it off in the early going. Some of the momentum was gone. More of it went when ol' Butterball struck again this time at 11:36 remaining and a questionable interference on Chuck Slate. Again the Red performed ably on the Penalty kill and again emerged unscathed. The trouble was we never really got going again.
Typifying this was a baffling sequence where Rookie Phenom Neil Shah briefly morphed into Roman and danced along the blue line just long enough to keep the play alive and put all of his line mates offside. Luckily this transformation seemed temporary... we already have one Roman... We just couldn't seem to put it together.
The Zombies ground it out, got more chances than the Jacks for sure in the last 5 minutes, even pulled Brian with about a minute to go... to no avail. 1-0 loss in a game that many of us thought we should have for sure. Tough one, but a good skate. Great effort by all Zombies last night. Thanks for coming out.

But... there are 4th period beer credits Parker, Hammitt, and the Blogger hisownself.
Another enjoyable evening in the Canton lot.

This week's nostalgia prize goes to Chris Fosdick for mentioning the old Combat Zone, in particular that great piece of American culture the neon sign from the Naked I ... which, if you are old enough to remember had the eye placed just perfectly... cant be seen in the photo here... but i couldn't find a good shot of it.

Forgot to mention the empty netter that was missed completely in the third period on the first occasion that we had the Jack's keeper really dead down and out.
Also a funny scene from before the game...

Hammitt is chatting up the two Zeebs that had just come off duty from the previous game. One of them is telling the other about this game last week and how this guy, a big guy, reaches out and just labels this dude to the boards and he says "Nice hit... but you can't do that"... then Hammitt realises that the guy was talking about him. Pretty funny once they recognised each other.

The team is back in action right away this week with a 9:20 tilt in Canton against the Inglewood Jacks. Haven't played them much but they've been in our division(s) for a while. The record shows 1-2 but the last two have been just vicious beatdowns. Lets have a good turn out and play well against these guys. It would be nice to keep the early momentum going.

Not bad for a Tuesday night on the South Shore. The golden Suds would assemble for some redemption from the Zombie game the night before, and in general looking to put a more positive look on the franchise. There was no lack of skaters. Despite some late arrivals we ended up with a full 13. Another one of the impressive rookie crop, Lizzies friend Steve showed hoping to find a spot if there were any no-shows. His enthusiasm is to be applauded but management would have to make a spot decision and Steve was understanding about the squad not wanting to go with 14. Again, usually this is a very safe move and I don’t want to discourage it for Steve or anyone else that is close to a game they know is happening. Drop outs happen and an extra set of legs is always welcome.
In fact our gal Lizzy was the scorekeeper for the night, so there were technically 16 'daveurs in the building. Always nice to see Liz even when she isn't on the ice...

So, putting the extras aside the Golden Beercans took the ice with the following lineup.
O1: Larry, Chris, and Jassman
O2: Dave, Neil, and Pete
O3: Dr.Pounds, Blake and Howard.
D1: James, Campbell
D2: George, Jeff
Nets: Kilroy

Not bad right? Pretty solid group and the Call clearly had their cast of usual characters and looked to have about 2 full lines, maybe an extra man. The game started off and settled quickly into a back and forth affair. It was clear from the early going that the the Gold was going to get their chances, the Call would counterpunch only occasionally but effectivly, and their keeper would stand tall all night. Not to say ours didn’t… in fact the Blogger is here to tell you that Kilroy had his best night in the pipes yet.
Both keepers were tested often enough in the first period to get into the game, although the Call keep did see significantly more rubber than Matty. It didn’t matter because the Gold played solid at both ends of the ice.

The first period would go scoreless and only one penalty called, an interference on Georgie that he was none too pleased with but the PK and Matty stood strong.

The Second Period was a carbon copy of the first, only with more panting. This period went down to the final five minutes before the Penalty bug would give a nip. Larry would go for a trip as he dropped a guy on the backcheck. That would have been fine if we didn’t decide to compound the problem with putting 5 guys on the ice and getting called for too many men 30 seconds later. Down 5-3 for the better part of 45 seconds or so the Gold did a great job rotating the guys on the ice and coming up with a tremendous kill. Matty figured in heavily here. For long stretches of the second the Gold had piled up the chances, now the Call had surged again and Matty had to make a series of stops and covers, including a downright niffty right leg kick save that was terrific. The CEO BMF was in top form and was there all night when we needed him.
On to the third.

This was the game that just didn’t want to be decided early. Thankfully there was no more penalties (until the very end) and the two teams went after each other with some determination. Good work all the way around, fast shifts, hard skating by everyon on the Gold roster. Dr. Pounds in particular had a nice night setting up a nice handfull of quality chances for his line. Blake would have 2 doorstep opportunities and a critical clear during his final shift. Howard even contributed after a brief period of confusion as to when to be on or off the ice, but that was quickly rectified.

It was closing in on 5 minutes remaining when the game finally saw its first tally. The line of Larry, Jasse and Chris had been generating good chances all night and finally got a break. Larry and Chris would hold it in the zone, and with Jasse would converge to make a great crowd in front of the Call’s keeper. Then Mike Campbell would step in and fire a low off speed shot that went right through the legs and under the goalie before he could flop down on it. 1-0 good guys.

The Call would try to rally, and to their credit, they had about two more surges in effort than I thought they had left in them, but it was to no avail. With a minute remaining they would pull their keeper but couldn’t get anything going. Larry would again figure in the play hand passing to himself, Jasse would help in the scramble, then Rookie sensation Neil Shah would pick up the loose puck and flick it into the open net for the nail in the Call’s cofffin.

Of course Kilroy would be tested one more time before the end, and once again answered the need with a solid play and preserved the win. A great job all the way around and a nice win to have.

Game Stars:

3rd Star: Mike Campbell for the game winner through traffic. Good play all night from the big defenseman, nice to see him get the winner.

2nd Star: Larry Bell. No question Larry was excieted to play last night and showed it by figuring in both goals and generally making a nuisence of himself all night. Good job.

1st Star: Do I have to say his name? You see the score. You know the deal. The CEO, BMF, our leader in the Nets. Fronting his first Shutout… ever. .... Matt Kilroy. Great work gobbling up loose pucks and getting on it when we needed him all night. You can see the improvement in Matt’s play this season even though its still early. That is only good news for all of us.

Honorable Mention: Has to go to Dr. Pounds for a terrific night centering the suprisingly productive 3rd line. He and his linemates did better than hold their own, they made stuff happen all night. Great work Doc.

As per usual iJosh turns out another tremendous guest blog. This is good news for you blog readers out there that would like to read about the game, you know, within a week or so of the game actually taking place. iJosh consistantly not only turns out good game story but has been more on the ball than the blogger these days. Thanks Josh.

Without further ado... here's iJosh.

I came into this game with high hope. The our new hockey brethren seemed to put some life into the team the last game. And the Shock are very much a beatable team for us.

The game would start about 10 minutes late. Which turned out to be a good thing since the recent trend of horrendous traffic from the north side of Boston continued. Those coming from Cambridge and north hit at least one, if not two stretches of road that looked more like a parking lot than a highway. But luckily every got to the ice before the third line took their first shift of the game.

There were plenty of skaters. But we were sorely lacking in regular defensemen. With an squad of 12 a decision ws made to go with 3 rotating defensemen and 3 full lines of offense. So the defense would be regular George Moorachian, semi-regular Mark Reynolds and periodic fill-in blueliner Kevin Parker. The offense would line up with: Roman centering Matvey and Ken D; Steve Baker centering Mike Goodwin and Chuck Slate & iJosh centering KenMitch and Neil Shah. And in goal, Lizzie.

Play started out flat. Seemingly nothing was happening. No shots, no passes, no movement. Every pass was magnetically attracted to the skate of an opponent. Overall it didn't look good. Not too long into the 1st period a Shock would collect the puck and skate over the blue line. He would release a slap shot that would make its way over Lizzie's shoulder, 1-0 Shock. Play would pretty much continue this way for the rest of the period. Lucky for us, the Shock were not playing inspired hockey either. Twice in the 1st period the Dead in Red would get a power play only to take no advantage of the situation. Despite the lack of opportunities and flat skating we would find ourselves down only 1-0 at the end of the period.

The 2nd period had no major change in style, enthusiasm nor success.
Early in the 2nd another shot on a breakout from just inside the blue line would find its way past Lizzie to make it 2-0. Again play pretty much continued to be the same: bad passes, passes into the bodies and skates of the other team, etc etc. Then to add to our issues, George would get called for a rough. Didn't really see it, so I cannot really make a judgment. The PK would hold on to the end of the period and essentially kill it. Still 2-0 Shock.

I don't know if it was George getting irritated or just everyone finally woke up, but the 3rd would see much better play and many more opportunities. Ken D would slid a pass to iJosh who had an open net and would like it back, but just couldn't hold on and ended up on the ice without a decent shot. Then Steve Baker would pick up a rebound put it high and finally the Cads would get on the.....nope, never mind.
Nice play by the defensemen to get in the way of the open net.
Arghh!!! Again another set of rebounds would be there for the taking, but no one could get a good hold on the puck. The goalie would make a few nice saves to keep his team up by two. The Skating Zombies would get another chance at the power play, but couldn't quite capitalize.
KenMitch before the game predicted that if he got called for a penalty that it would be for a trip. Low and behold he would make an attempt at the puck and puck carrier, miss the puck and sweep the leg. That would be two for tripping...good call Mitch. Again the PK unit would do their job and kill the penalty. Tempers would flare a bit, but then as time wound down the Cads would give it one last try to get on the board.
With under a minute left, the Cads would put a few shots on net. The Shock would try to clear, but Mr. Reynolds would keep the puck in and get the Red on the board with a shot from the point. Timeout was called and it was decided that with 40 seconds left we should go for broke, pull the goalie and just try to win the faceoff and take our chances.
iJosh was unable to cleanly win the faceoff, but the Cads were able to gain control of the puck quickly and make a move toward the net.
Unfortunately the Red were unable to get a good enough chance before the Shock were able to clear the puck and end the game.

Final Score 2-1 Shock.

The locker room was a little bitter. We'll get them next time.

The Zombies are back in action again tonight. South Shore fun tonight in Hingham over on the A side (the left as you look at the front of the building) at 10 o'clock. Lets have a good turn out and get after it against these guys. Haven't played them in a while but had some good games against them last summer.

Someone remember the scoresheet please, and have a tale for the belated blogger tomorrow?
