Final Summer Daveur big Schlitz win!

Cadavers (15) vs Schlitz (15)
Tuesday August 12th
BU 9:10pm

Schlitz 4
Cadavers 2

Another rousing match between the Zombies and Suds on Tuesday night at the old Walter Brown Arena. This one was a very nice match up, selected by team Captains Larry Bell for the Cads and Mike Campbell for the Schlitz. These guys faced off playground style via conference call at the end of last week and selected the squads that would play on Tuesday and then continue on into the playoffs. The catch here was that the winner could decide which team to play as in the coming "tournament" therefore selecting which group of opposing teams they felt they have a better chance of competing with.
So things got rolling with some late stragglers coming in, and Brian Carey's son filling in a spot for the Gold, playing opposite his old man who was in the pipes for the Cads. Greg James once again went to Canton first, apparently because he just likes Canton so much... but he brought Superstar Fan Miran with him so we will be nothing but nice to Greg.
The teams got to it and there was some nice action early. Here is how the rosters broke down.

Cadavers
D pairs: George and Hammitt, James and Kevin Manning.
Offense: Larry, Chris and Jasse, and Matvey, Gregson and Slate, with Underhill rotating. Brian Carey in Net

Schlitz
D pairs: Campbell and Jeff, Matt Elliott and Valenti
Offense: Capraro, Reynolds and Parker, and iJosh, Roman and John Carey, with Scott Pounds somewhere in the mix. Lizzy in Net.

Again, this game looked to be a nice matchup with good roster distribution all the way around. Keep in mind that the Cads will gain Nelson and DWH for the playoffs, but lose Kevin Manning unless he is needed to sub. Also, the Schlitz will add Jim Sullivan (no show) and John Carey wont be available. All in all the squads played pretty evenly and the first period was a frenzy at both ends for the first 4 minutes or so.
Then the Gold broke the ice. Mark Reynolds potted a nice goal from linemate Pete Capraro at the 13 minute mark that put them ahead 1-0. The teams would continue a nice and lively pace of play, again with good chances that both keepers turned away until Mark Reynolds would strike again. This time from Matt Elliot, Mark put the Suds out on top 2-0 with 6 minutes left in the first. But even then... he wasn't done. The Gold continued to build pressure and seemed to bottle up the Cads pretty well and Mark potted another for the natural hat trick in the first period! This one was from Roman and Elliot. Great work by hard working Mark Reynolds for really coming to play, and the Suds got the benefit taking a whopping 3-0 lead into the second period.

The Cads wouldn't go quietly I can tell you that. Larry and the boys kept on coming and really the momentum in the second noticeably switched over to the Red side of things. A little more than halfway through the period Matvey struck with a "clean it up" goal in front of Lizzy that got the Red on the board. This came at 7:40 in the period and after a bunch of time in the Gold end where the Red just kept after it time and again as the 'cans failed to clear.
Not more than 2 minutes later the Gold would get back on track with a nice play of their own. Mike Campbell to Roman to ... guess who... Mark Reynolds for his and the Gold's fourth goal of the night. This was a nice goal to get because the Red showed serious Zombie Pride and kept after it for the rest of the period.
With 40 seconds left in the second Greg James scored unassisted after another long scramble in the Gold end. The blogger can't recall if this goal took place before or after Greg had a fantastic collision with Mike Campbell in front of the Gold net. They felt that one at the earthquake labs on the Richter scale somewhere. Anyway if the hit happened before, than the goal was a nice make up for it.
The game went into the third 4-2 Suds and stayed that way through the whole period. Good chances all around but nothing broke for either team as time ticked away.
Some plays of note were Blake Underhill not realising that his penalty was over in the first until he heard the whole Red bench screaming at him... Jeff Fosdick sliding headfirst into the endboards after trying to breakup a chance by Brother Chris. Chris got the shot off but Lizzy stopped him. Pete Capraro holding onto the puck and shooting even though linemate Mark was wide open with an open net to shoot at... Pete wasn't letting him have 5. Larry and Pete trading blows...err shots in the waning minutes. John Carey getting off a couple good ones only to be STONED by his old man... and probably a bunch of other stuff that I just can't remember.
The fourth period was dominated once again my Superstar Miran James and her unstoppable, kabobs, Spring rolls, and watermelon... and "man sized" brownies... you spoil us my dear... we are very grateful. Parker and Chris brought beer, and probably a few others too but again... things got hazy after the game... even after Jasse made a under the radar escape with out apres skate.

Game Stars
3rd Star: Lizzy. Nice 2 goal game and a bunch of HUGE stops to seal the win.
2nd Star: Matt Elliott. 2 helpers and a nice fill-in job on D for the Gold.
1st Star: With a Bakers Hat Trick, four goal night... Mark Reynolds. This prompted calls of "D-League" from the Red bench... to which we answered... "You wanna see his grey hair?" Great work Mark, a few more like that and you'll be a cinch for the scoring title.

Cads Crush Cans... 'daveur 5 wrap.

Schlitz (13) vs Cadavers (12)
Wednesday July 30th
Dedham 10:10pm

Cadavers 6
Schlitz 1

Well the hockey gods set us up for another interesting night at the rink. In the early going it looked like both teams would be shorthanded and both did take the ice with only 9 players each. Mitch and Josh would show during the first and bring the Red total to 11.
The teams broke down like this.

For the Dead in Red: DWH, Kevin Manning, Capt. George and Hammitt as the D. Forwards were Roman, Parker and Elliott, with iJosh, Mitch, Gregson, and Nelson working the foward ranks. In front of Sub Goalie Jim Sullivan.

For the 'cans: A D trio (again) of Campbell, Valenti, and Fosdick. Offense was Capraro centering, Kilroy, and Reynolds, and Larry centering Dr.Pounds, and new guy Mike Fitzpatrick. Lizzy played for the Gold.

The first period was a non scoring affair with lots of up and down action. Up and down and wheezing for sure but the two teams felt each other out well and both keepers made some stops. Both teams had reason to feel good about their chances and the game was tight.

The Red seemed to gather momentum though as the play went on, and then they broke the ice. On a typical hard working shift in the zone Nelson made a nice feed to Parker who got the Zombies on top at 13:00. The Gold had a perceptible letdown that only resulted in more bad news less than a minute later (12:15) when (again working hard and cycling the zone) the Red added to the lead when Dan Gregson plunked one in from iJosh and it was 2-0 Zombies.

If you are sensing a trend, the Gold were too, but this time it took another 4 minutes of playing time when the Zombies struck again. Matt Elliott had a nice goal, again from Workaholic Nelson with 8:15 left in the period. The Gold litterally was happy to escape the period with a nice few minutes of play and went into the third down 3-0.

The Third was looking a little better for the 'cans as they actually got a few shots on Sully and tried desperately to climb back into the game. A nice breakaway steal by Jeff Fosdick resulting in a nice shot past Sully (and through a hole in the back of the net) and the 'cans had hope. Hope that seemed to carry them for a bit, but tired legs are a big load to carry and the moral of the story is that they couldn't keep it up.

Despite 2 power plays first on DWH, then on iJosh the Gold was unable to muster any type of sustained offense and the Red defense did a great job working the play all the time. DWH would make up for his penalty shift with a nice shot (from Roman) that beat Lizzy cold and put the Zombies up 4-1 at 8:04 remaining.

Then it was the 'Cans turn to run to the box and that was just about it for the game. Campbell, and Valenti both went, and Kevin Parker put things (way) out of reach with an unassisted bid that made it 5-1. The Zombie pride (and Nelson's legs) kept moving till the end and the Greybeard Veteran, scoring leader himself capped the night with an unassisted goal to close things out with a little over a minute left. The end result 6-1 Cadavers.

Of course the last goal should have been whistled dead, I should know I had a great view of it, as a matter of fact I had first row viewing for all 6 of the Red goals (-5 for the night) so I would be an authority. They were all good.

Good work by everyone in Red and a nice 'Daveur win.
GameStars
3rd Star- Showing and playing 2ice in one week after spending A WEEK in the HOSPITAL, and still managed a critical 2 goal night. Sheesh. Great work Kevin Parker.

2nd Star- Though not particularly tested... Guest Keeper Jim Sullivan. Nice work.

1st Star- Scoring Leader, Hard Working, Red Wearing, Breakyourface Running, Leg Pumping, Goal Scoring, Pass Making, Mr. Everything all the time.... Nelson Sharfman.

Fourth period grainy photos.... There was again a feast courtesy of CEO/BMF Matt Kilroy and lots of beer from lots of sources. Thanks to one and all.

Schlidaveur Rosters! Tonight in Dedham.

Schlidaveur Number Five.
Schlitz (13)vs Cadavers (12)

Wed 7/30 Dedham 10:10

The Cadavers look to go to .500 on the year and take a commanding 2 win lead in the Schlidaveur series (thereby winning it), and the Schlitz look to keep themselves from falling back to .500. Should be interesting.
Here is the memo from Managment on tonights game:

The Hockey Gods have spoken and below are the rosters for tomorrow's Schlidaveur...Actually not true Hockey Gods, I had to make some modifications to accommodate car pooling. If another Schlidaveur is not scheduled (we have 5 more regular season games not yet scheduled) then these will be the teams through the playoffs and I wanted to be as earth friendly as possible. Not everyone is playing tomorrow but everyone has been selected to a roster. Who is Shlitz and who is Cadavers was decided by coin toss. The rosters are pick of a hat so read'em and weep.

Cads win Reversedaveur!

Schlitz (9) vs Cads (8)
Tuesday July 8th
Quincy 10:10pm

Schlitz - 3
Cadavers - 4

A tight matchup fueled by guest GM Commrade Romin Kurin. He did a great job splitting up the squads and what ensued was a very entertaining close played game that saw lots of chances and good play from both sides.

The squads broke down like this after a few people bailed.
The Golden Schlitz had Brian in net, and Mike Jasse, Matt Elliot, and Jim Sullivan as a D rotation. That left Roman, Jeff, and Marc Valenti as the first line backed by Pete Capraro and the Twin Towers, Dan Gregson and Billy Pearlman. Matt Kilroy was a no-show due to lack of skates (see bottom of post), and Blake Underhill is still unheard from... but chances are his wife will call in with a sick note any time now...
The Dead in Red Cadavers had Spunky Lizzy between the pipes and a D rotation of iJosh and Scott, and Chuck with Matvey. The forwards lines boasted a double threat, first line Larry, Chris, and Parker, second line George, DWH, and Ken with Mark Reynolds switching in. Mike Hammitt was a no-show due to a stolen car...

The game got off to a good start and both teams got chances in the early going to warm up the keepers. This went a long way to stoking the fire as things heated up.

The Golden Schlitz would get on the board first at 8:47 in the first when Marc Valenti nailed a nice shot that beat Lizzy on the near side. The Dead would not take it for long and a shift later at 7:08 Chris Fosdick would bury a beauty by Brian after a tic tack toe combo from line mates Parker and Bell. This was going to be a close game, and that front line of the Dead would be heard from again.

Just before the end of the first Chris got his second from Parker with a nice shot that put the Dead ahead with less than a minute to go. The only penalty of the period came against Pearlman and the Gold with 3 mins to go but there was no scoring on the penalty. Thats how the period would end. Cads up 2-1.

The Gold would get right back to it early in the second when Dan Gregson would score (pass from Valenti) on a long shot that found its way through traffic and by Lizzy to tie up the game. But sure as stench from a 3 day old corpse the Red would rise up again, less than a minute later and Larry would bang one home (again from Parker) to regain the lead. Back and forth the teams would go, a break away here, a missed assignment there but no blood until Capraro landed a hard work goal from Mike Jasse with just over 2 minutes to go, again tieing the game for the Gold. George would go for a trip with a minute left that was kind of ticky tacky but its always fun to see George frustrated. End of 2 tie game 3-3.

It was looking like this one was going to go down to the wire as again the teams traded chances, Jeff Fosdick missed two solid chances, with Lizzy stoning him on both, Roman Kurin for all his quality GM moves couldn't poke home a gift wraparound that clanged loudly and disheartened the Schlitz.

Larry would take the game in his hands, as he so often does, and would score the go-ahead for the Dead at 11:44 remaining (again Parker on the assist) with another nice hard work goal. The Gold doulbled their efforts but it was clear... very clear they were tired and slowing down.

This is where things got interesting. with 6 minutes left Larry was whistled for a rough that turned into a double minor either because of the "hit" or because Larry was already running his mouth at the Butterball Zebra (with glasses) that we know so well. Things generally disintegrated from there. Pearlman took another one for the Schlitz not long after , then Chris went (or served) an interference call just over a minute later. Still no luck breaking through from the Schlitz.

Then Larry, has he so often does, let his emotions get the best of him and melted down. He and Capraro were called for matching roughs along the back boards behind Lizzy and after the call made a motion like he was going to pitchfork Capraro (who was laughing). Butterball's partner didn't realize it was in jest (only that Larry had already been a problem) and dove on Larry to keep him off of Capraro. Larry spun around shedding the Zebra as we all yelled (even Butterball) that it was ok and nothing was going to happen. Can't really fault Zebra number two for trying to keep things from escalating.

This of course devolved rapidly as a stream of obscenities was exchanged between Larry and the Zebras and he was asked to leave the game. More mouthing off resulted in Butterball hollering about 2 game suspensions and Lawrence ingloriously leaving the ice.
Back to game action ( we lost minutes due to figuring out the littany of penalties in the last 5 minutes) and the Dead in Red, despite losing Larry went on to snuff out the Gold's chances as time expired.

A big win for the Red, and our gal Lizzy. That first line of Larry Parker and Chris was just too much to deal with and they basically stuffed it down the Gold's throat every shift they were out there. I dont think I'm going to rank the game stars this time but I'm going to give a bunch out anyway...
Game Stars.
3 Stars for Larry (2 goals 1 assist), Chris (2 goals), and Kevin Parker (3 assists)
1 Star for Lizzy who made a bunch of great stops to power the Cadaver win. Nice to have you back!
1 Star for Pete Capraro who flew around the ice all night like is pants were on fire.
1 Star for Mike Jasse who played a great (if not desperate) game at D for the Gold. Dr....you won your battles when you needed to and played great. Good work.

1 Star each for the rest of the Greenhorn Defensive corps, iJosh, Matvey, Scott, Chuck, Sully, and Matt Elliot. Great work all of you.

4th Period Honors to iJosh for the Red White and Blue Jello Shots... tastey!

Overheard in the Parking lot: Larry: "Can you get Star of the Game and Coon of Shame for the same game?"
Hmm.. Yup.

Game Star Coon of Shame goes to Larry Bell for completely imploding after having a stellar night on the ice. Once again his mouth checked him out of the game in the third. But really... what a game line. 2 goals, 1 assist, 3 penalties, and a 2 game suspension. That's why he is king of the scoresheet folks! Enjoy our furry friend this week.

The Doh' Coon of Shame Honorable Mention goes to CEO Matt Kilroy for dropping his skates off at Arlington Skate shop, then spending the afternoon doing... well Kilroy stuff... and forgetting to pick up his skates before the Skate shop closed... uh... I guess you'd call this a drive by Cooning as our furry friend was on his way to Larry's bag for the week.

Cads Pound Suds, Get First Win.

Cadavers(6) vs Schlitz(7)
Tuesday June 24
BU 9:10pm

Cadavers 6
Schlitz 1

Ah yes friend reader of the blog we had yet another memorable night at the rink as the two teams faced off at BU for Daveur #3 on the season. This one was interesting from the start. Initial rosters had 11 a side, then the Schlitz lost one a day before the game.

The Golden Schlitz sported Marc Valenti, Dan Gregson, Billy Pearlman, and Greg James on D. Then Larry led the forward corps with iJosh, Capraro, Kilroy, Matvey Nikhamik and Ken Goldenberg. Chris Fosdick was also scheduled but was the only dropout. Mike Gash was in net.

The Cadavers would run Capt.George Moorachian, Jeff Fosdick, Dan DWH Herbert, and Mike Hammitt on D, and Jim Sullivan, Matt Elliot, Chuck Slate, Scott Pounds, Roman, Parker, and Blake Underhill on offense. Brian Carey in net.

The game would get underway, undermanned on both sides. They don't waste any time over there at BU and the game got underway with really only 7 or 8 on each side. Late arrivals were Hammitt, and DWH and then Blake for the Cads, and Greg James for the Schlitz.
Poor Greg, he went to Canton thinking the game was there. Then, according to his description in the lot after the game drove 100mph to BU going FAAAAAAAAAAARRRG! the whole way. Too bad... the guys in Gold could have used him in the first period. He finally made it to the ice about 8 minutes into the second.
The game got underway and the late arrivals filtered in over the first 6 minutes or so.
The Cads grabbed an early lead on a rare, but massive mistake by OEJ in the Schlitz end. OEJ came out to play the puck well into the faceoff dot (near the top) and then lost it. The Cads forwards were there to scoop it up and before you know it, from George to Chuck and into the net. 1-0 Red.
The Cads, still with more skaters than the Gold, struck again with only a minute left in the period when Matt Elliot swiped at the puck as it lay in front of OEJ's pads and it trickled through him and in. OEJ wasn't too happy about that one for sure, but the Cads were off and running. They led 2-0 after one.
Things began to get interesting early in the second as the DWH would bury a nice shot from Parker and Sullivan to build the lead to 3-0. The Gold would come back and make a showing as Larry SW Bell would pot one, from iJosh and Matvey to cut the lead to 3-1 and by that point James had shown up, and it looked like momentum was shifting in the direction of the yellow shirts.
During this stretch there was big pile up in front and eventually on top of Mike Gash. Valenti, and I think Capraro ended up in the pile, and according to Marc OEJ said he got knocked in the head 4 or 5 times. He skated into the corner with his helmet off and took a moment to get himself together. The zebras were nice enough to stop the clock and when he had composed himself everyone on the ice and benches clapped their sticks to show some support.
The game would go on but things were just starting to get dramatic. Going into the third period down 3-1 the gold continued to work hard and get chances that Brian did a nice job snuffing out in general in the Red end.

Marc Valenti had a nice rush going on one shift until he tried to bank it off the boards and instead plunked DWH right in his grill... so much for that. It didn't put DWH off at all either.

It wasn't long after that that Big DWH would score again, this time from D partner Mike Hammitt (who had made his standard 2 trips to the box already), with a smokin' wrist shot that beat OEJ cold. Again we would get the helmet off, need some time to adjust my pads, think I'll sit here on the ice for a while, can't believe I'm playing this bad routine from OEJ. Like I said... dramatic.
Well it wasn't over by a long shot. DWH would complete the Hat trick with another wicked shot, this time from Scott and Sully, a few minutes later. This time OEJ stayed on the ice for even longer with his helmet off, so long that the Zebras were getting frustrated with him and just started the play. I think there was even some grumbling from the Gold bench by this point.
This time, right after the drop of the puck Roman Kurin would take the faceoff and make a very slick dash into the zone, past the D and roofed one by OEJ for a breakaway goal, now putting the Cads up by a gaudy score of 6-1 and that just put Gash over the edge.

He wouldn't get up at all. He just sat there, pulling the whole "woe is me" routine. On and on with the whole helmet off, zebras frustrated, Gold bench frustrated scene. From the Red bench it was pretty bizarre.
Gash had signaled to the bench and Kilroy that he was all done. Kilroy comes off the bench and says "If you aren't going to play then get off the ice, we'll skate without you." So off he goes... to the locker room, with six minutes left in the game.
Now Mike's story is that he got his head knocked and he just couldn't continue. Only problem with that is that it happened a period and a half before he left the game. Funny how the 6th goal made his head hurt that much more, isn't it.

Now... before I get carried away, let me make something very clear. Head injuries are no joke. As we have all seen from DJ's unfortunate situation, it can be very serious. Mike, if you were really hurt, I take everything I've typed (and am about to type) back, and offer you my best wishes for a speedy recovery.
But see... I'm not buying it.
I think the only thing you hurt, was your ego... and to leave the game, to walk out on your teammates just because you were having a bad night, is inexcusable. Its being the worst kind of teammate you could be.
"Take me out coach, I don't want to ruin my GAA..." I've got news for you dude... this ain't the NHL, and you ain't Patrick Roy. Take it from a guy who is no stranger to a -8 or 9 night, ok? I've had a handful of them lately, but I've never left the ice, gone home or feigned injury to get off the ice. That would be selfish, petty and weak. I could go on... really but I wont, yet.

The Gold played out the last 6 minutes of the game with 6 skaters on the ice, and really played pretty well. With full rosters these teams should have played a pretty competitive game.
That was how things ended, with minor scuffles (filled with laughter) up and down the ice, Kilroy and Underhill, Pearlman and Fosdick, Larry and everyone wearing Red, Fosdick hanging on iJosh's back as he stood in the crease. It was good fun, hopefully next time we'll have a better all around game... and maybe a little less drama.
In that vein....

Game Stars.
3rd Star: SW Larry Bell.
Clearly his teams leader and major driving force for most of the game. When you play against Larry, you know he wants to win. A nice goal and relentless effort all night. Its why he's so good.
2nd Star: Brian Carey. Cuz I feel like giving it to him. Some nice stops and his second 1 goal game in a row. Great work Brian.
1st Star: DWH. Mr. Hat-trick with the wicked wristahs. When Dan showed up, things went really well for the Red. He played great on both ends shoring up the defense and giving a major boost on offense. Nice work.

Honorable mention 1: Jim Sullivan for a pair of helpers and solid play all night.

Honorable Mention 2: The Goldenberg Family! In particular Jenn for bringing along superfans Robyn and Max! Robyn could be heard all night hollering for the guys in gold.
A delightful child with terrific taste in players (she said she liked #10 the last time she came to a game) she was the vocal equivalent to a full section of BU fans rooting on the home squad. Sorry that Daddy's team didn't win... and that we didn't have any Root Beer for you in the parking lot... but we appreciate the support.

This brings us to the final award for the evening. We have a slight variation on an old favorite. This week our furry friend the Raccoon of Shame has a new home, and possibly a new name as well.
This week I award the VAGISIL COON OF SHAME to Mike Gash for all the reasons laid out above. Sorry dude, but in all my years playing hockey I've never seen a goalie walk out on his team because he was getting racked. Sorry you had a bad night. Sorry you got landed on in the crease, and I do hope you are not injured. Still... you have to be called out. That shit was weak. Take a few Midol and cut the drama.

Scorapalloozadaveur ends in a TIE!

Schlitz (4) vs. Cadavers (4)
Wednesday June 10th
BU 10:20pm

7-7 Tie....

Well that was fun. The teams met up for a Youngn's vs. Oldn's showdown latenight at Boston University. This game was a tough one as there were a bunch of people who couldnt' make it, but we ended up 9 on 9 until the 3rd when the Schlitz added one more... who would prove critical to the outcome of the game... but more on that later. This one turned into a good old fashioned shootout with multiple lead changes and scoring chances a-plenty.

It all started a little strangely. The games were running a little late I guess for when the Zamboni left the ice the horn blew. This was as I was walking out of the locker room. By the time I got to the bench a minute of game time was already gone. WTF? I asked why they started the clock so early and both refs and the scorekeeper pointed to the clock that said about 10:23pm... uh...ok. We have had these refs before... John Flood and Bill Tuminus and they were clearly not interested in hanging around. They also barely gave any assists during the game which sent the blogger fishing for stories to sort out the game... from his cloudy head... and the stats. As by way of excuse making... that's part of the reason this post is so late.
In regards to that the email of the week comes from Dr. Jasse probably out in the wild hinterland of the mid-west wondering just where the hell this gamestory has been....
Dear Blog Management,
I would like to register a complaint.
Here I am, all alone in the hinterlands, nary a hockey player in sight. Not only did I miss the Grey-beards vs. the Youngin's but I haven't had a whiff of info from what had to be a classic battle of the 'ages'.
So what' the deal? What's more important? Fulfilling your job that puts food on your family's table or meeting my needs as a wobbly-kneed veteran who just wants desperately to connect to a game that is rapidly passing me by?
BLOG ME, DAMMIT!!!
I need, I need, I need.
Best,
mj

Ahem... ok Doc. You got it. Here it is.
The game got underway with about 15:00 left in the first thanks to the hurry-up refs. The Oldguy Cads had Jeff, Campbell, and Stephan at D. The Front line of Nelson, Parker, and Capraro was backed by Pearlman Hammitt and Blake Underhill. The Golden Babyfaces had DWH, Valenti, and Manning on D with a front line of Larry, Elliot and iJosh (i think) backed by Roman, Matvey and Gregson. I may not have that exact...please comment if it was otherwise.
The game got off to a rocky start for the Oldsters as the Goldenthumbsuckers went up first led by the flying Russians. Roman Kurin scored the first two goals of the game to put the Gold on top in the early going. Here's Roman to tell the tale himself.
"I scored the first of the game off the scramble in front of kilroy where I think everybody on my line got a shot off (Matvey, Gregson).I scored the second goal of the game of the long wrist shot that Kilroy missed, probably because he was screened."
Nice work Roman. But the overexhuberence of youth would not get the best of the wily Vets as the Cads turned it on and started to get some pressure on Lizzy. Billy Pearlman got a nice one to break the ice for the Vets. Here's Billy's take:
"Me and Hammitt combined on our first goal when Mr.Angrypants drew the D to him and then feathered a beautiful pass to me in the slot and I put it over Lizzy's shoulder top corner...a nice shot if I may say so myself."

Next up for the oldsters was Jeff Fosdick, pinching down deep. He threw a shot at Liz from a near "baseline" angle that saw its own way through the bodies and under her arm into the net. All tied up. The first period had some serious action folks, and it wasn't over yet.
Not to be out done the Schlitz mounted another set of attacks on Kilroy and the Red. This time DWH scored a beauty unassisted, only to be followed by Gregson putting one home from Matvey to put them back up two. Here's Roman on that one..
"On Gregson goal I got the puck on the boards and passed it to streaking Gregson who let go of a low wrist shot that went into a low left corner."
Sweet. At the end of 1. 4-2 Schlitz.
It was the second period where the RedVets went to work. They would again come back to tie the game with a pair of goals. Jeff Fosdick again with a nice shot, this time from the hard work of Nelson and Parker. Those two would combine again when Parker scored from Nelson and Blake, with Blake touching it to Nelson who got it to net crashing Kevin for the equalizer.
The Red weren't done and Stephan Wennik showed his wheels as he put home a rush unassisted to give the vets their first lead of the game. The Gold then came back to tie it at 5 with their only goal of the period, Matvey from DWH. The Vets were still not done as Kevin Parker would strike again, this time from Stephan and Campbell. Here's Mike with the play.
"Stefan had the puck on left D, right at the blue line. He had just stopped it from
being cleared out, and I was skating backward, along the blue line, away from him. He dished it over to me... Not a hard pass, but it eventually got to me. I wristed it at Lizzy, and she stopped it, but left the rebound right in front of Parker who stuffed it home."

This would leave the game 6-5 Cads at the end of 2 periods. Clearly a brilliant, see-saw, back and forth game that was promising to have a wild finish. There had been a few penalties along the way but I can't remember the circumstances. Campbell had 2 through 2 periods, as did DWH for the Schlitz. The only other penalty was called on Parker in the third.
The third period was not as high scoring as the first two but was very intense. The Red fought hard to hold onto the one goal lead as the period wore on. About halfway in the Red would get a huge lift. Once again Jeff Fosdick stepped up (literally) and scored his third for a natural hat-trick. Jeff pinched into the zone getting a take away on the loose puck and driving toward Liz fired a hard one that slipped under her glove. The Blogger beams with pride...it just doesn't happen like that for Jeff very often.
Again the grind was on. Now down 2 the Schlitz came back hard. Larry and the boys fought hard and started to pile up the shots and chances. They finally broke through and pulled within one on a goal from iJosh with about 6-7 minuets left. Here's iJosh.
"Larry Bell got the puck behind the net and as the CADs collapsed on him centered the puck to me. I then tapped a backhand through Kilroy's pads."
The Schlitz were within one and were grinding hard. They were buoyed by the arrival of Jim Sullivan who was very late but arrived just in time to give the Schlitz the boost they needed in the third. Here's Nelson with some great comments on how the third period wound down.
"Sullivan showed up early in the third when the Cads were up 6-5. Miraculously we even scored another after he showed to make it 7-5, but the young legs eventually wore us out.
Many kudos to Matt. He made a flurry of saves late to keep the lead deep into the third.
Further kudos goes to Hammit, who was a virtually non-stop skating minor penalty but somehow managed to get none of them called. Old age and treachery...
High stupage (stupidity or courage, you make the call) marks to Blake for sacrificing his body for a late game shot block at the blue line."

Great stuff. Thanks Nelson.
Indeed the young legs did wear us down and the Gold broke through one more time to tie it all up with under 2 minutes remaining. Here's Roman on the goal.
"On the tying goal I kept the puck in the offensive zone and put it towards the net, It was going wide but Jim intercepted this shot and let go of a beautiful backhander that Kilroy had no chance on."
That is how things would end... Seven-seven all even. Not bad for a scoreapaloozadaver. Here are some random comments from a group of the very good guest bloggers that helped out this week.
"... You have to mention Lizzie stoning Nelson, and even with all those goals scored I don't recall Larry ringing anything up, did he go scoreless? Definitely worth a mention if he did. I thought Roman skated great, I thought Blake played great position and really worked hard, and I thought Kilroy, even with all the goals scored was great. He saved some stuff that really should have gone in."
-Hammitt

"….Since you were drunk and can't remember...both me and Hammitt had hat tricks....AND....we F'd that hot co-ed from the BU dorm that came down to see her hockey heroes!"
-Pearlman
...something tells me it didn't really happen like that...

"I had my bell rang on few occasions by the likes of Hammitt and Campbell, I vividly remember the Campbell freight train leveling me on the blue line when I was trying to stick handle around him, next thing I remember I was lying on the ice trying to take a breath of air, brutal, got to keep my head up.
So that's that, first half of the game felt like a pick up game because of low intensity but intensity picked up after a few penalties and physical play."

-Roman

Great contributions one and all the Blogger thanks you all. Now its time for...
GameStars.
3rd Star: Tie. Kevin Parker and Matvey Nikhamik. Both with 3 points on the night. Parker with a pair of goals and Matvey with one but 2 assists. Great work by both guys.
2nd Star: Exercising restraint from hubris the blogger names Jeff Fosdick as the number 2 star. A three goal night hasn't happened for a long time for Jeff and all three were pretty sweet. He would have made 1st star if the last one held up as game winner. Instead...
1st Star: Roman Kurin. Great work all night and a bucket full of points. 2 goals to lead the game in the first and two more assists on the way for a nice four point night for Roman. Great work.

Suds win Campbelldaveur!

Cadavers (3) vs. Schlitz (2)
Tuesday June 3
Canton 7:00pm

Schlitz 3
Cadavers 1

Last night the 'davers gathered at Canton for the first team on team action of the young summer season.
Guest GM Mike Campbell deserves high marks indeed for concocting a potent and well-balanced matchup for the Campbelldavuer. The game was a fun skate, and a close game throughout.
Larry led a scrappy group of Cadavers featuring a frontline of Jim Sullivan, Dr. Jasse and himself. They were backed by Matvey, CEO BMF Killroy, Scott. They were backed by a strong group of D led by Capt. George, Marc Valenti, Pistol Pete Capraro, and newcomer Mark Reynolds. This group was abley backstopped by Brian Carey.
The Cads came out strong and scored less than two minutes into the game after some strong early pressure. Russian scoring machine (sorry Roman) Matvey Nikhamik tipped a hard shot from Mark Reynolds, through the Schlitz D and keeper OEJ. The Dead in Red took the games first lead and the up and down nature of the early play meant this was going to be a hard fought game as the Schlitz looked to get going.
The Schlitz liked their chances going into the game, keeper OEJ (out of semi retirement…err musical sabbatical whathaveyou) had a D corps of the Double Dans (DWH & Gregger) backed by Jeff and Greg James. The Golden Beercans were lead by a frontline of Roman, Chris and Kevin Parker. Those guys were backed by iJosh, Ken and Chuck Slate. Mike the Hammer Hammitt did rotation duty.
It wasn’t long before the Schlitz had a handfull of chances of their own and quickly got their feet under them after the early rushes by the Red. It was clear both teams were going to get chances. The Zombies had several breaks that got behind the Gold D but OEJ held tight making a handfull of very nice stops. The gold was definitly building to a pitch. The first period was drawing to a close with the Zombies up 1.
Then the Gold got a break. Jeff took a center ice turnover off the stick of CEO Kilroy and went hard into the Zombie zone. Harried by George first he kept barrelling toward the net with Valenti closing. Brian went down, and Jeff shot through him as Valenti caught him with a cross check that sent all concerned into the net… Marc, Jeff and Brian (who got the worst of it) in a heap just after the clunk of the puck in the back of the net. Valenti for a rough, Jeff for the goal, unassisted, and all even after one.
The Second period was an even-steven grind it out for chances affair straight up. Both teams had strong chances. Both keepers made solid stops. Both teams worked hard trying to gain an advantage. The Gold had a larger share of the chances, especially in the second half of the period. We went to the third with the Gold pressing, the Zombies scrambling to get something going, and the game still tied.
The game would turn again less than a minuet into the third. The Gold took the faceoff into the Red zone, and DWH fed Kevin down low. Parker threw it at the net from the side angle, looking for someone in front, and the shot sneaks through and gives the Schlitz their first lead of the game with 16:21 remaining.
The Red frustration would start to show as George took a whistle for knocking Ken down a minute and a half later. The Schlitz couldn’t capitalize on the power play as the Red did a great job keeping the puck out of their own end. They would continue to get chances but OEJ was having none of it. The Gold held tough and did some more knocking on the door of their own with Brian up to the task as the game got late.
Greg James would go to the box at 3:05 and the Red looked like they would have their chance to tie it late. The Cans were up to the task and after a few anxious moments and a few good chances by the Zombies, they were able to kill the penalty. Just as the time ran out on the James penalty Mike Hammitt took a turnover of his own and fired it into the empty net for the game sealer with :30 seconds on the clock. Game over.
A really good matchup, well played by both sides. Lots of effort out there from everyone. Once again management wants to thank Guest GM Mike Campbell for coming through in the lineup department. This was an excellent way to start off the summerdaveur season.
Big Kudos also go out to our significant fandom that was in full effect last night. The Capraro Crew and the Slate family were there, to cheer on both dads and their teams. Thanks for coming out boys and girls. Thanks also to Moms Kerry and Danielle for making the trek and bringing the kiddos.

Game Stars
3rd Star: Guest GM Mike Campbell for a great matchup
2nd Star: DWH for superior defensive and offensive play and the assist on the game winner.
1st Star: Kevin Parker for the game winner. Nothing pretty, but it won the game. Great job.

Honorable Mention: CEO Matt Kilroy for providing the tasty pizzas. Thank's Matt!
Overheard in the parking lot 1:
“I don’t think the bag of cheetos was really a good choice for pregame.”
“Yeah.. I kind of underestimated the nastyness of the cheeto-belches…”
Overheard in the parking lot 2:
“That stuff’s all chemicals, it can’t be good for you.”
“Think of all the sperm I’m killing.”
“Are you kidding? Your wife’s gone all month, you’re going to be killing sperm for weeks.”
“Well…what’s your excuse? I mean, your wife doesn’t travel.”
“Good point.”

Some of the crew met for pre-game... but no beers. Nice to see that everyone got there early for a 7pm game.

Pizza courtesy of CEO Kilory and Zorba's!

Dr. Pounds Aircraft party shirt was a hit.

Tuesday Campbelldaveur! Early Game!

Schlitz (2) vs Cadavers (3)
Tuesday June 3
Canton 7:00pm

Time for the first Schlidaveur of the Summer Season. Double check that game time and get your excuse ready for the boss... we need everyone to show for gametime. I'm sure there will be stragglers... but you wouldn't want the game decided while you weren't there... helping out your team... would you? I didn't think so.
The Cads clearly are looking for some bounce back after taking a severe thrashing in the frist two games of the year. While the Suds look to keep the winning momentum. We'll just see how it all shakes out.
Guest GM Mike Campbell, while not in attendance for the game, has chosen the teams... so any complaints can be directed to him personally. Just kidding. Looks like Mike has cooked up some interesting rosters. So be ready and lets get the smack talk going in the comments.
