Wow. Really. Nothing on this at all. Sounded like the Leafs have put together a nice little squad in their innaugural season in D league.

The blowout against the Leafs was just ugly. We were down 3 or 4-0 before the end of the first. They had a couple of supastahs #5 on offense and #12 on D who were just doing whatever they wanted out there and (particularly supastah #5) celebrating like they just won the cup after each goal. Not a fun game. Props to Campbell, Hammitt and the rest of the team for keeping our cool during the debacle. Nice work by Baker to pot a couple of goals in the third. Otherwise, well, I'm just glad there was beer after the game.

Wow. Thanks to Larry for the words. Sounds like a long night at the rink. We'll have to keep an eye on these Leafs as we will probably be seeing more of them in the playoffs.

The final Daveur of the Summer 2010 season came around during prime vacation time so that's where the blogger was. Many of his teammates were out of town as well but there was still the core of the Schlidaveur Enterprise to pull together two squads and fight it out for Playoff Seeding rights. Larry would Gm the Cadavers and Mark Reynolds would manage the Suds. These guys worked out the following rosters and the game was on.

Zombies Battle Sparta... and Win!

5-1 Win



Team Zombie showed for a late evening match up with the Spartans and turned in an entertaining rarity these days... a win. The night featured a brand spankin new rookie goaltenter for the Zombies, a fan, a fight (nothing new here...), check that... Campbell fighting with high schoolers and yes you read that right... a victory.
Lets have the roster first off. Big ups from managment to our gal Lizzy for hooking us up with Teddy, a new goalie but experienced player who manned the pipes for us. This was good because the alternative was Nelson with the backup gear. No offense to Nelson, but we'd rather have him crashing the net than manning it.

This group of twelve would do a nice job getting things underway and creating offense early. The Spartans had their usual crew (apparently some guys from the Wolverines crossover) and guys to keep an eye on. Number 20 (black helmet) needs watching and the Red did a good job setting the tone early and working the game.
Larry would be the first to break the ice. He would bury a play from Hammitt and Team Dead was up a goal just 3 minutes in. This was good! The Red were moving pretty well and doing a nice job counter attacking. Matt Elliot would score on a wild rebound and the Dead were up 2-0 at the 12 minute mark.
Interesting here that the Green got a few bodies added to their bench mid way through the period. They happened to have off colored jerseys, one with no faceguard and looking suspiciously fresh and young faced. Of course these two were awesome, and young and made for special minding whenever either of them stepped on the ice. The Green would get a goal at the six minute mark and it was 2-1. Thats how the first would end.
Things were growing a little contentious between the squads and there was no shortage of physicality here and there but nothing major... yet. Larry would strike again, this time with help from Dan With Hands Herbert and Team Zombie was up 3-1 now halfway through the game. But things were about to boil over.
As a by the way here... Teddy the guy who has only been playing goal for 6 months or so was playing well. Dude was athletic and made nice saves even if he was a little awkward around the net with the puck. He was asked to be there on a number of occasions and answered the call all night.
The two superstahs were ramping things up and Campbell, who started the game a little... amped up... was at the end of his rope. While towering over one of the guys (teal jersey) and working him off the puck... as Mike does so well... the kid had a bad idea. Launching himself up and under Mike's chin he stunned him with a head butt and the "horse left the corral" somewhere in Campbell's head. The kid didn't have much of a chance as Mike explained in detail that he took exception to the head butt. Mike was "explaining" with his gloves and arms pretty well, D partner Jeff was trying to hold off the other young dude (no mask) but couldn't keep them apart. Next thing you know Campbell is rolling on the ice with both the boys, and Jeff (now realizing the good fortune to be had here) is yelling to the ref that the other kid was 3rd man in and had to be kicked out. Two ringers for the price of Campbell immediatley seemed like a good swap.
Of course Jeff should have been paying more attention to Mike who was still "explaining" now with the original kid against the back boards and the Zeebs had thier whistles and hands in the air. Jeff soon corralled Mike and sent him to the locker room and the Zeebs tried to sort everything out.
Red ended up with a powerplay (Campbell for a double, a third and an eject) thanks to the 3rd man but before the puck was dropped they decided they needed to toss one more Red shirt... they just couldn't come up with a number. Now. The Blogger believes that they were probably looking for Jeff who was trying to separate Mike from the Green players but he never "got involved". Regardless someone had to go, the Zeebs told Jeff and he went to the Red bench. Now, Jeff offered to go unless anyone else wanted to... and Mike Hammitt (a little riled up hizownself) volunteered to go. This is a big teammate move by Mr. Hammitt and gives him an automatic game star. The Blogger doesn't think this really went the right way though in retrospect, Jeff should have gone as he was the only one it could have been the Zeebs were looking for. Regardless Hamm is a standup guy. Thanks.

Things basically settled down after that. A little pressure was off, the Green goalie had done enough screaming as time was going off the clock while the Zeebs worked things out that the Zeebs were not going to give Green any breaks. In fact they collected another two penalties in the third to only one for Red (iJosh with a hook).
Dan Gregson would put home a play from DWH and the Red would go up 4-1 with 5 minutes left in the game. Neslon would cap it off (from Elliot) with just over a minute to go and this game would be a rout as time ran out Red 5 Green 1. Good stuff.

Magnificent 7 crunched by 138Autobody

The Golden Beercans, at least a few of them, showed up to play the C level Rte.138 Autobody club for an early evening matchup in Canton last night, and suffered a predictable beating at their hands. This was despite a great effort by the few that skated.

This game was not exactly popular. Despite everyone on the roster and sub list being asked we only had 10 confirmed until a late visit from the Verizon man to the Capraro house made us 9 at best. Its never easy to get through the 93 traffic for these early games and yesterday a car fire and full highway closure resulted in 128/93 north and south becoming more clogged than Rex Ryan’s colon. It was not good.

This is all besides the fact that the opponent was a club that we’ve only seen once before, for good reason, they’re a C level squad, and we took it in the teeth that night. This must be our turn in the barrel week at the NESHL as the Monday night out of division opponent laid a smackdown on us too. Pretty sure that this, as well as gametime lent to the popularity, or lack there of, for this one.

It was about twenty of 7 when Mike Campbell kicked open the locker room door with a “Hello bitches” only to find the glum faced Fosdick boys contemplating their fate. After a while iJosh and Nelson would show and Lizzy after them as 7 approached. We’d have 5 at least and it was becoming clear that we’d have to go there and face a C level club with no subs, or at least very few, if anyone else survived the traffic crunch to make it. Lizzy was late enough and we all stalled a bit so the refs ran the clock at the beginning of the game.

We lost about 7 minutes by the time we were ready to play and they dropped the puck around the 10 minute mark of the first. Thankfully the Zeebs seemed to neglect to give the Beercan’s a delay of game penalty. They probably figured it was punishment enough to skate the whole time with 5.

I’m here to tell you, friend reader of the blog, it wasn’t nearly as bad as it could have been. The Can’s skated with a reasonable tempo, and countered the immediate strength of Team Autobody. They still worked us, but we did a good job defensively breaking up wat they were trying to do. Mike and Jeff played D, and Nelson centered iJosh and Chris. We held them scoreless for about 4 minutes until they scored at the 6 minute mark. Lizzy had already made a handful of good saves but it was clear that it would only be so long that we could stem the tide until they would get a few breakthroughs.

The first period would grind on and the Gold really took to the defensive style and even counter punched a few times. There was no shortage of Beercan Pride as the period got late with no breaks. Roman was sighted coming in near the end of the period.

Team Autobody would get another with 30 seconds left in the period on a ridiculous bang bang that we were undressed on.
The Gold was glad for the break and Roman made it out for the start of the second.

The grind was on. Jeff would get called for a hook about three minutes into the period. Maybe his strategy was to get a rest, but it backfired as 138 would score about a minute later to cancel the penalty. It was now 3-0 and the Gold was trying just to keep too much blood from getting in the water. But, they held strong. They kept fighting them to a draw and with 5 minutes left in the period something awesome happened.

Nelson, as usual, would tirelessly heft the puck into the Black end and create a play. His shot led to a rebound which Chris would wrist into the net for a goal. The Gold was only down 3-1 against a far superior club, with only 1 sub, almost to the end of the second. Unfortunately it wasn’t close enough to the end of the second and Black would deposit two quick goals, 40 seconds apart in the closing minutes.

The Gold welcomed Neil Shah to the bench for the start of the third. He had shown late in the second, and Neil deserves extra credit for showing up, at 740 after a ridiculous ride down in traffic. The guys were glad to see him.

The Blogger has to admit some pride here. I can honestly tell you that I think the Schlitz played a step faster in that third period. At least a little faster than the first. Its amazing what two subs will give you. So they started the third down 5-1 but dug in hard.

Team Autobody would score twice in the opening 5 minutes but that’s all they would get. Even at 7-1, the blood clearly in the water and the sharks clearly feeding the Can’s didn’t despair and no one gave up. No one.

To cop Nelson’s phrase from the postgame… The Magnificent Seven did everything they could to preserve whatever dignity we could for those last 12 minutes and held the Black scoreless.

Lizzy needs some bigtime props here. The Girl was ON it. She made at least 10-12 good saves. She made more than a handful of impressive saves. The slapshots were like lasers and the play was often right on top of her and moving side to side. All I can say is that she played great. That’s not usually what you say after getting 7 hung on you but it’s the truth. Great work Liz.

So there you have it. A beating, but we didn’t ever fold. That’s just about all we’ve got, with the exception of our aches and pains this morning.

Props again to Neil for showing so late and helping the cause. Props to Mr. Campbell for the delicious Limeys in the postgame.

This one would end with all seven in the lot for a few mintues behind Campbell’s truck but it was short lived. Everyone was tired and eager to be on their way. Campbell pulled out leaving behind the dour faced Fosdick boys by themselves to commiserate with a last round in the lot. They too were soon gone not having enough energy to long discuss their sour fates.

I floated through the lines.

Brian kept us in it the first period and they only scored 1 or 2.The refs called a few crease violations as they were crashing the net and staying there. I recall John talking about being penalty free in the locker room, maybe the refs heard that one so they called him for something. Hammitt got a double minor for some guy fancy skating around him and him not liking that. Making it a 5 on 3.

The second period is when I got a garbage goal from off the boards on a DWH shot.Then it was all downhill form there. They had some guys who could skate and does not reflect their standings on the leader board. The end was somewhere around 6 to 1.The best part was Dr. pounds having some Corona and Sam light in a cooler with some freshly cut limes and a bottle opener.And after this game I hate Michigan even more.

Word to that Gregson.... I hate Michigan too...

Hey, look who stopped by for a word. It's Mike Campbell:

Took a beating. Brian played brilliantly, but couldn’t stop everything we let fly at him. We lost 6-1, although probably should’ve had at least two more.
These guys were good, fast, and pretty civilized, although there was a little chippiness by #22. Good effort, just outplayed by a better team.

Thanks to the good Dr. Pounds, though, we won the fourth period with icy cold Corona’s AND cut limes. A nice late night treat in the swamps of Quincy.

Another beautiful night for steamy summer hockey on the south shore and our heroes in Gold faced off against the more and more plucky D-Minus club that we've had some good games against this season. Last night was true to form and the game was even or a one goal affair for most of the way.

The heat hasn't done the ice in Hingham any favors and for a long time it was wet and soft in lots of places which had a big effect on the smoothness of the game for a while.

The game was close. Brian made some nice stops but only saw occasional action as the Beercans would take the game right to the Minus and would do well moving the puck and getting chances. The Minus keeper played VERY well and saw lots of shots. He gobbled up everything near him and the Can's couldn't seem to get anything consistent going. The Minus players did a good job getting after it all night and contested everything.

The first would go scoreless and without penalties.

The second would go a long time before the lamp was lit and the ice "broken" as far as scoring. Mark Reynolds would make a nice play at the point and would drive a shot, two feet off the ice toward the net. Jay Seaver would pivot, and deflect the shot, in mid air into the net for the 1-0 lead. Nice work there by both guys. The second would end 1-0.

The third period would see a bit more action as contests for the puck all over the ice became... more contentious shall we say. Baker would go on a match for a rough early in the period. You could see it coming with Steve, he has been prone to boiling over lately when receiving "attention" from the opponents. The teams would skate 5-5. Then later in the period Mark Reynolds would go, also on a match where lots of pleasantries were exchanged. Just helpful hints and encouragement I imagine passing between sportsmen... or not.

Sometime before the Reynolds penalty, but with less than 10 minutes remaining the Beercans would strike again. This time John Cary would pick up a Roman rebound and bury it to give the Gold the 2-0 lead. Good work by Roman working the zone, and great finish by John who has been a nice little addition to our squad this summer.

The Minus weren't quitters and the two goal lead didn't slow them down. With just under 2 minutes to play the Gold would be back on their heels and scrambling in our own end and eventually they would poke one under Brian who had been down, up, and squirming around trying to get the puck... no one in Gold could get it either and the game was within a goal. They would pull their keeper but the Mighty Beercans would survive the last minute and a half and take home a very nice, hard fought 2-1 win... just like mother used to make.

Good stuff.

3rd Star: Nominated in the locker room by Brian... Ken/Mitch and Howard for getting after it and being in position all night. True dat. Props to the third line wings for making it happen all night.

Once again the Blogger was not in attendance for this tilt against our Russian friends. Therefore we will get a smattering of Guest blog action here to describe how the evening went. First off we have a very short and sweet (and stats oriented) recap by Larry Bell:

Alright. Thanks Larry. Next we have a few more words from the always helpful Mark Reynolds on how things went:

"I have nothing but bad memories of Mon. eve. Overall a disjointed effort.
During Baker’s brawl, he did land 7 or 8 unanswered shots to the opponent’s cage. He was smart enough to leave his hockey gloves on this time (unlike his bout with Hammit).

Jay continues to be a stud player demonstrating some nifty puck handling and skating. Larry played a great game as well. His back-checking shut down some Ruskie plays.

In the end, the Ruskies had two players that controlled the pace of play when they were on the ice. We just couldn’t stop them.

Not much else to it." Thanks very much Mark. Good stuff.

And now we have a rarity in Guestblog action. Here, from the Opponent's perspective is Mr. Roman Kurin who skated with the Sputniks and had these words to contribute.

"To start the game the Schiltz had a good group of 12 skaters with Lizzy between the pipes. Sitniks only had 8 to start but then later 2 more people joined, so we had 10. Good back and forth action which was interrupted by a small fight between Steve and one of our D-men. The Refs got involved really quickly and that didn't result in ejections, just minor penalties. Unfortunately 5 min later there was another fight involving Steve and another D-man from our team which did result in ejections. Can't blame the refs, both guys were rolling on the ice, have to say it was entertaining. In any case that left 9 people for Sitniks for most of the game.

Lizzy made some amazing saves for the rest of the game, there were a few loud pings off the posts and crossbar by Sitniks. Jason scored a beauty of a goal, i had a front row sit for that one, he beat me behind the net, made a spin-o-rama and somehow managed to stuff the puck between the post and a goalie while skating from behind the net. pretty good stuff.

Second goal scored by DWH i think on the solo effort when he took the puck on the Sitnik's blue line and made a good wrist shot from faceoff circles. 2-0 after the first period. In the second Sitniks came back to tie it at 2-2. One was a solo effort by one of our guys and a good shot, the other one was a good passing game which was finished by "nifty #5".

In the third schlitz would score 2 more goals, one by Larry off the faceoff win i think and the other one was off the scramble in front of the net, not sure who got that one. Sitniks would come back again to tie it at 4-4 and then score the last goal on a breakaway 2 min before the time expired. All in all a good competitive game. Overheard during the game:"Way to be a hero!" to our guy who scored the last goal by Mark Reynolds"You got lucky!" - by Eric during hand shakes. Maybe true :)"

Suds take the Lobsters!

Another beauty of a summer night for hockey at our "home" rink in Quincy. Something nice about coming here in the summer, good memories in the building... and the parking lot.

The Beercans faced off against Team Shelfish on Wednesday night and it turned out to be a good competitive division game.

The Lobsters had the usual suspects. They have a few players to watch but the young lady wearing #18 with Weiss on the back deserved special attention all night. She has wheels as many of us know and the Gold had to keep a close eye on her whenever she was near the puck.

The grumbling in the locker room about us not taking any opponent lightly must have paid off becuase the Gold came out with a stong effort and took the game right to the Lobsters.

Eric Bauer would break the ice with a nice spin-o-rama shot from about 15 feet. He called it a weak backhand but hey it went in the net so it goes down as a beauty of a spin-o-rama and a 1-0 lead for the Gold. Credit the good Doctor Jasse with the assist. Very nice to see the Jassman back on the ice after he was on the DL with the ever uncomfortable groin injury. Glad you're back Doc.

The Red would answer just before the end of the first with a good goal and the period would end 1-1.

Red would continue to take the momentum and despite lots of shots by Gold the Red would get the next one about 5 minutes into the second and would take a 2-1 lead.

Gold would not back down and the guys played great making sure we kept the energy up. Lizzy played great in net, the last goal she had been kind of hung out to dry and couldn't be helped.

The Gold got going and Chris Fosdick and John Carey did some very nice back and forth work that resulted in a terrific goal by John. Chris with the assist and some all around good work with the puck for the rangey forward. He pushed the play all night.

Striking again and taking the lead back, the Gold continued to play well. This time Nelson would put the finnish on a Steve Baker bid and the Beercans held a 3-2 a little more than halfway through the period. The second would end with that score.

The third saw another goal by the Lobsters to tie the game but afater that it was all Gold. Dan "DWH" Herbert would land a beauty of a shot through traffic that would beat the goalie low. Credit John Carey on the assist. Not long after Larry would get his as the Gold held the play in the Red end for a nice series. Credit Bauer and DWH with the assists on Larrys goal to make it 5-3.

The third would showcase some excellent work by Lizzy in the pipes and time and again she smothered Red chances and made a bunch of stops on odd man rushes. The Red really deserve credit for playing hard to the end as they continued to get good chances.

Steve Baker seemed to relish his job of "shadowing" number 18 and he did excellent work containing the speedy forward. She would have her chances including a breakaway that she tried an extra dipsy-doodle that Lizzy snuffed out. Steve finnally got under her skin as she held his stick long after they separated near the blue line then the two were tangled behind the net and Steve would go for a slashing call. It was kinda fun to watch.

Good stuff all the way around. The game would end 5-3 good guys (and girl) and we headed to the parking lot.

Big ups to Bauer and Gregson and Jasse for bringing postgame beverages. It was another very nice night by the swamp under the pale streetlights.

Woah. The blogger got a few word of mouth reports form this Sunday night debacle in the Q. Tough night for a game, Sunday, during the summertime when we all have so many things going on, it was a bit thin stringing together a roster for this one... and it showed.
Team Zombie would report and start the game with 8 hearty skaters. There would be a total of 10 but not until later in the first. Here are the ten Zombies

The opponent for the night was the "Hal Gills" which we figured out is short for "BC fuckwad ringer cherry picking bastards". We'd never seen this group before which is appropriate given that they had a handful of players that were clearly not D League talent. These young pukes showed up with the BC gear, bags and equipment and all and had no problem showing off their obvious talent. They also had some D talent, after all they had 3 full lines at least on the bench. You may have a feeling that this didn't go well, friend reader of the blog, and you'd be right.

It took these guys all of about 2-3 minuets to be up 4-0 and Brian had pretty much no shot at all of those chances. According to Steve Baker, they were dipsy-doodling, behind the back spinnoramma type breakaway plays, that made his blood boil early. It was a test of restraint for Mr. Baker to not lay out any of these guys, apparently, and given that Mr. Hammit was on the roster its amazing there weren't more penalties for the Dead in Red. Nice work keeping cool boys.
The game was out of hand early. The BCringerpukes kept cherry picking the rest of the way, not concerned that they were up by 6, 7, 8, or 9 goals. Cool guys.
The Red did show Zombie Pride as they held the "Gills" (I preffer BCringerPukes) to only 1 goal in the third and only 2 in the second. Good work by everyone keeping your head with it.
Jason Seaver scored the one goal for Team Zombie. That would be the only bright spot for the night.

Hammit had a slash pen. then matching at end when a dude he rubbed up against took exception to the contact and threw a hissy. Nevermind that Hamm could have annihilated the guy, and didn't, and he did a nice job staying cool.
Daley took one late too... which doesn't happen often.

Here's Guest Blogger Larry Bell with a quick game story from the nightcap game from Monday night. Some guys did try to skate both and left the locker game after game 1 a Cadaver loss to the XXX and drove over to lend a hand.
Here's Larry:

The CADs showed up with a weel-stocked roster of 7 skaters at the beginning of the game: Capt George, Parker, Elliot, Hammitt, Seaver, LB and George's friend Greg. We received a bit of good news in the locker room that the goalie didn't have his skates because his mom forgot to pack them. Luckily? Greg brought an extra pair of size 9 skates for the goalie to put on his size 12 feet.

While he was busy stretching out Greg's skates, the Shock goalie was late coming out onto the ice which resulted in a delay of game penalty. The Dead in Red took advantage of the man advantage. I carried the puck over the blue line on the right wing and dropped a pass for Seaver trailing. Seaver's shot lead to a bobbling rebound that Hammitt was able to corral and deposit into the net. 1-0 Cads.

Later in the first, after getting hemmed into our defensive zone for a shift, Parker sent the puck 3/4 the length of the ice. Hammitt beat the goalie to the puck and fired it into the empty net. 2-0 Cads, end of the first.

In the second period we received some reinforcements as DWH, Daley, Bauer and Gregson arrived from the 8:00 game in Quincy. With our added bench depth we quickly coughed up the lead. 3-2 Shock end of the second.

Then DWH would take a feed from Bauer and tie the game at 3. Seaver then found Greg on the left wing and he buried the go-ahead goal for a 4-3 win. Great goaltending by Matt at the end of the 3rd with the Shock skating 6-5 preserved the win.

Nice stuff Larry. The Blogger greatly appreciates your contribution to help keep this space alive...

First game of monday night double header this game then later in canton the Zombies would take on the Shock. Another early evening game at our Quincy "home" rink ... come to think of it this summer has held quite a few good game times for our teams... anyone who remembers regular dates at U-Ass @ 10:30pm should be thankfull... just sayin'...

Anyway this team definilty has a sneaky name. In the past teams that have NESHL in the title are usually Clinic level teams or a hodge-podge of players thrown together. Now this Leafs club had some hodge, even some podge, but they also had some talent. Primarily though... they were not an instructional team. They had easily 2 guys with good moves, and despite their age, ahem... they moved pretty well and were enough to hold all of us off at times.

They just had a nice comeback in the third led by their best player. At one point this guy had half the beercans chasing him around the zone... and he wasn't all that fast. Too bad. Definitly a game we coulda shoulda woulda had... but ah... didn't.

Another terrific night for summer hockey in Quincy. There was a positive vibe in the air as the Suds gathered for an early evening matchup with the Scapegoats. The Good Doctor Jasse even made an appearance. He stood on the bench and took some pics. Nice to have him with the team even though he was still on the DL.

The 'Goats had the usual suspects but no real stand outs or half shield wonders. The Beercans took the game right to them and did a good job moving the puck and passing. This paid off right away when iJosh would take a pass from Gregson and Jeff and he would rifle a shot that was a thing of epic beauty just over two minutes into the first.
Clearly my man was feeling it. He had a fan in the stands and picked the right night to score his best looking goal in a long time. At least that the Blogger can recall...
The game looked like the Beercans would be able to do what they wanted and there were long stretches of sustained pressure by Gold and some really nice passing. Regardless the 'Goats would get one with about 7 min left in first and the first would end 1-1.
The Second frame was all grind it out but not much scoreing as the Gold would work some nice moves but clearly was having a problem finishing their opportunities. To top it off on a breakdown and rush the other way the Gold would give one up about 6 minutes into the period.

The Gold wasn't going anywhere and to the Roster's credit everyone brought it and the offense and puck possession kept on coming.

With less than 5 left in the period Mike Daley would find the net after some nice work in the zone. He took a pass from iJosh who took it from Jeff at the point. Good work all the way around grinding out the chance by the forwards. Daley was a beast all night working the puck in the zone. I have to say there were stretches where we were putting 3 and 4 or more passes together on a shift. A thing of beauty. After 2, 2-2.

The Third was all the grind of the second, with plenty more wheezing, from both clubs. Nice saves at both ends kept the game scoreless. The CEO did a masterful job stopping the play any time the Blue got something going. Good stuff all the way around.

Which brings us to less than 2 minutes to play. Daley's line on the ice and the Gold applying nice pressure on the 'goats as it came down to the wire. Chris Fosdick would work a pass to Eric Bauer who would make a play at the point and get it low to Daley who was working the pocket low off to the goalies right. He shook two defenders and walked right to the side of the net and banged home the game winner with authority and sent the Gold home happy with a 3-2 win.

Just great work by Daley to make it happen when we needed it. All the guys on the ice did a great job getting chances as the time ran out.

3rd: iJosh for a crowd pleasing score... his very first of the night.

2nd:Matty CEO Kilroy for making the stops all night and lookin' good.

1st: Magic Mike Daley for a pair of goals and a stylish game winner in the closing minutes. Doesn't get much better than that.

Actually... it did.
Awaiting us in the parking lot was the good Doctor himself, standing by his portable camping grill with a cooler of beer at his feet. Burgers and dogs for the victors who relished the moment in the heat of the evening and discussed our victory... and the absence of #21 from the postgame... for some time.

We are going directly to the Guestblogger for this one... and it sounds like it was a doozy. Here he is makin' it happen as always... guestblogger iJosh:

Dedham, MA - Some days it isn't easy being the Dead in the Red. Those red sweaters might as well have bulls-eyes on them at times. Last night against the Windsuckers was no different. On more than one occasion sticks were swung, hits were given and punches were thrown. It was definitely not the worst set of incidents ever for Schlidaveur Inc, but not the best either.

Dressing for this game would be: Larry, Neil, Blake, Hammitt, Jason Seaver, Howard, Steve Baker and AK for the forwards. Campbell, Capt George, Parker and iJosh for the defense. The fearless leader, Matt Kilroy, manned the pipes.

From the outset, this looked to be a tough game. The Cads did not put much pressure up front and rarely, if ever, got a strong shot on net. The shots that did get through to the net were in clear view and easily handled by the goal keeper for the Suckers. On the defensive end, the Suckers would get through early putting a shot by Matty. George would be sent off the ice early as well for a hold. The Dead would hold off that penalty. And Campbell, after a few games without a trip to the box, would return to his familiar perch. This time he would go for a trip. Again, the penalty would be killed. But Matt would get beat once again from close range. Despite a two man advantage in the period, the Cads were unable to put much pressure on the Windsuckers and the period would end with a 2-0 deficit.

The second frame would see things get more interesting. The Cads would finally get through to the goalie. The first an unassisted rush. George would get the puck and race up the right side. He fired a nice strong wrist shot that beat the goalie to cut the deficit to 2-1. A shift later, Baker would collect the puck from AK and let a nice hard shot go. It would be too much for the goalie to stop as it would find its way through the 5-hole and slid in for a 2-2 tie. Now the Suckers started to mount the pressure again. They were fighting for the puck and position. Each play ended with an extra shove, or chop from them. But the refs were on it at this point. And the word on the ice was to not retaliate and let the refs call it as they were. So numbers were noted for later if necessary. Midway through the second, Larry would get called for interference as he pushed a Sucker offsides. Not long in the penalty the Suckers would strike again putting one past Matty from the right side. On the ensuing face-off, the Suckers would take the puck right back at the net and bury it for 2 goals in 30 seconds. The period would end 4-2. The Cads hadn't played great, but were still in this game.

So the third round, I mean period, would see a lot more physical activity. Larry, not feeling really ready to leave the box so soon the first time, decided to return. This time for a little hook. Two more minutes to reflect alone. However, Larry would be joined not too long after by Mr. Campbell for a rough. A little scuffle in the corner turned into a little more when Big Mike was taken down and a little extracurricular activity led to Mike giving the guy a few hits to the helmet. But #19 decided that this was not going to be a one-on-one battle and jumped in. #19 would be shown to the locker room, but not before Hammitt had a little shouting match with him from the bench. Campbell and the Sucker would go off with matching minors. The refs would take their time - about 3 minutes - trying to sort everything out (it was a 4 on 4 for a few more seconds guys. It isn't String Theory.). The next shift would see iJosh collect the puck on the left point and take a wrist shot that was deflected into the goalie by [I think] Neil. AK would try to pick up the rebound, but it would be quickly covered by the keeper. #9 would take offense to AK having the gall to try to pick up a loose puck and throw AK a little jab. So AK - all 5'7" of him - would take on this 6'2" Sucker. Some debate was quickly made on the ice about weather or not to step in. It was determined, rightly or wrongly, that this one-on-one battle would remain one-on-one unless another Sucker stepped in. The refs even yelled a warning about 3rd man in.

So every Cad watched the Suckers to make sure no one got close. As soon as the 2 bodies fell to the ice, it was quickly broken up. AK, to his credit, agreed with the decision to sit tight and let him fight his own battle. You have to give him credit for doing so. Though Parker thought that someone should have stepped in considering the size difference. Good points were made on both sides of the argument.

Let it be known that if it got out of hand that someone would have stepped in as needed. AK and #9 would be sent home for the evening. But it wasn't over yet. Campbell would get a bit confused as his matching penalty expired and jump on to the ice and head to the bench. However, this would create a two many men situation and put a man back in the box. A minute later, iJosh (serving the too many men) would get some company in the form of Steve Baker for a slash. And more company was about to enter the box when Hammitt would deflect a puck just inside the defensive blueline. As he skated forward to collect the puck he would "Hammitt" a Sucker (a "Hammitt" would be to essentially run him over like a Battleship would run over a dingy). Bogus call if you ask this guest blogger.

Regardless, the Sucker would take exception to being no match for Hammitt and give him a push. Hammitt already aggitated by the 3rd man in on Campbell took his frustrations out on the little guy, who then tried to face rake our bull in a china shop. This would prove to be too much for the refs to handle who promptly ended the game with about 4 minutes left on the clock.

Hands would be shook by some still on the ice, but not all.

So the final tally would be: 4 goals against. 2 goals for. 3 fights. 7 penalties for the Suckers. 10 penalties for the Cads and 3 overall ejections.

The 4th period was thankfully not called off by the refs as the Cads enjoyed beer provided by Larry, Campbell and iJosh who also brought the leftover jello shots from the 4th of July.

Overheard in the parking lot regarding testicular fortitude of some players: Sometime you have a little pussy. Other times it becomes a Gash.

Late night in Canton for a Monday work week starter special against our old friends the Russians. Roman and Matvey are well know moonlighters with the team that usually wears purple. Must be a Tzar thing... The Sputniks have given us trouble over the past few seasons but most of the games have been entertaining.
Monday night was close at least, most of the way... but didn't end with the good guys on top.

The blogger barely remembers this one... again I'm writing from a distance here. It might have had something to do with the night. The Summer heat had set in, muggy and damp. The day was long, and the blogger was delighted, distracted, and divided in thought, with sunshine daydreams, nice things, smiles and beers that he almost missed the game. He didn't though and it all worked out...even after arriving to the bench a few minutes into the first.

The Gold would take the lead on a Steve Baker solo run with about 10 minutes gone in the first. The game was close played and clearly it would be a back and forth affair. Both teams had their chances and escaped without any penalties in the first. End of 1, 1-0 Gold.

The Second would see more action and the Sputniks would score just after a penalty to Baker (leg check... iffy) would expire and the game was tied at about the 12 minute mark. Baker would go again though, coincidentally after he had plenty to say to the Zebra about his first penalty, but again the Gold would survive the PK only to give up another goal just a minute or so afterward.

Not to be totally out done the Gold would get one from Jeff Fosdick who would score on a long shot from the point (pass from D partner Hammitt) and was glad, even though in his mind he'd wished it was his second score of the night... and the game was tied 2-2.

The Sitniks weren't done with this period by a long shot and niffty #5 for the Purple would pot two more goals before it was over and the Gold would find themselves down 4-2 after two periods of work.

The Gold would fight the good fight in the third but could never seem to get over on Team Sputnik. AK and Larry would both take calls in the period, AK early, LB late but again no scoring on the man advantage. Brian did what he could between the pipes but there wasn't much he could do given that we weren't able to score any more and the game would end 4-2.

Gotta hand it to the bad guys for the hard work in the third that prevented any momentum for the Gold. No game stars... or regrets.

A great night for hockey in Hingham as the collective 'daveurs got together for another you guys pick 'em Schlidaveur event. Summer hockey at its finest on a blamy moonlit evening. This one was abley Captained by Mssrs. Hammitt and Baker for the Gold and Red respectively. They did a great job putting the rosters together and it resulted in a fun game.

The Blogger recalls (even at this late date... writing weeks afterward here) arriving at the rink and witnessing the CEOBMF and Blake Underhill locked in the heated battle of a chess match behind the CEO's truck in the parking lot. The CEO was clearly in control but Underhill was making him hurt despite his disadvantage in numbers.
The closing moves were saved for the postgame and apparently the CEO came out on top.
Here are your official rosters. DWH was awarded to the Gold via coin toss before the game.

Now, at some point in the pregame locker room I believe AK asked the Russians (whom he was skating with) which sides they preferred to play on. To which Gregson added this tid bit
"it doesn't matter they still wont pass"
Ouch baby. Very ouch.

The game got underway and the teams went right after each other.
Kilroy in net for the Gold couldn't help himself after an early shot by good buddy Pete Capraro, and gave him a little smack talk about losing something that he had in his glove.
Pete responded and scored the first goal for the Red just a minute later. (he would also assist on the next goal) Kilroy would reconsider his smack talk policy there after.

Some time later in the first Nelson would take a nice break away down only to be met by Brian "long arm of the law" Carey who would actally make a double stop. He blocked the first and as Nelson whacked the rebound he would smother that too.

The Red would keep after it and Captain Steve Baker would score the next one (assist by Pete) from right in front of the CEO.
The Gold wasn't about to be silenced for the whole period and AK Douville would take a very nice end to end bid all the way around and would score on the wrap around on Brian just before the end of the period. After 1, 2-1 Red.

At this point DWH, who was late arriving would join the Gold and help out and the momentum stayed with the Beercans. Nelson would finish a nice drive to the net by Scott Pounds and the game would be tied just a few minutes into the second.

As happens so often in these games the momentum would shift and the Red would come right back to take the lead again. This time Mike Campbell would take a pass from John Carey and would race toward the CEO and just bury a nice goal past his brother-in-law. All that was missing was the applause. Red up 3-2.

The Gold would get one more in the second when Captain Hammitt would finish on a Gregson rebound that would tie the game again. End of 2, 3-3.

The third would see a grind it out finish, and this time the Gold would take the lead for the first time in the game as the play went around the red zone. Jeff Fosdick would take a loose puck at the point and would fire it toward the net. With the help of Kevin Parker's chest deflector the puck would find its way to the top corner and the Gold led 4-3.

The rest of the period was a straight out grind. Larry and the Dead in Red would pound the puck at the Gold and would take the play harder and harder to them. Matty would make a couple of just awesome saves on Larry shots during this time.

As the clock got small, the Red turned it on and Larry would break through with a poke it in under the pads move to tie the game. Seaver on the assist with good work in the zone. Just relentless work to tie the game.
And that was how it would end. 4-4 and who could ask for more?

4th period. Beautiful night full moon warm parking lot. Beers from all over... Limeys...

Zombies vs Mowhawks... Lakers win.

No game/No show.

Game 7 of the Finals between the Lakers and the Celtics must have been too much of a draw to get the Mowhawks to show last night in Canton. Reports are coming in that not so much as a single one of their guys made it to the rink. Hope they didn't bet too heavily on the Celts to pull it off last night... not so good.

Anyway our guys showed, and so did the refs so that left us with a 1-0 forfeit win over the Mowhawks whom we've yet to play against. Here are a couple of on the spot comments to give you a sense of how the evening went.

First up is Mike Campbell:

"As I just told Jasse, the other team no-showed. Most of the Schlitz bailed, and sat in the lobby drinking Kilroy-supplied Bud Light Limeys, watching the Celtics game. A few die-hards (Baker, Reynolds, Mitch and Gregson, I think) resisted the temptation of all things green, and skated.

Kilroy and I, as you might expect, could not resist, and even completed the trifecta with a trip to my truck at half time. ;)

I love alliteration. Truck trip trifecta.

I hate Kobe Bryant. "

Nice. We here at the Blog hate Kobe too... Thanks Mike.

Next we have iJosh with a few words.

"We did not play last night. Not a single player for the other team arrived. We had a solid group. Myself, Blake, Campbell and Kilroy enjoyed Bud Light Limes in the Lobby and watched the 2nd half of the Celtics game. The rest of the team played a half ice scrimmage and managed to join the rest of us to watch the last 5 minutes of the game.

We made sure to share a beer with the scheduled refs. Though they did promise to put Campbell in the box next time, just to make up for him missing some time in there this game."

Good matchup against Hillside Pub. They scored first despite Schlitz having the edge in play. Schlitz came back to tie on Howard Heppleman's first goal of the game - a result of working hard and crashing the net to put in the rebound. The "Hepper" put us up 2-1, again crashing the net and putting in the rebound of Bakers slapshot. Hillside came back to tie late in the second. Hammit put us on top 3-2 after a nice passing combination from LB and Neil. LB finished the scoring by following Hepper's example and crashing the net for a rebound from Hammit and Capt George.

This week's daveur was assigned guest gms and Matt Elliot (Cads) and Dan Gregson (Suds) met via conference all with upper management on Weednesday to choose out the sides. Each Captain selected his crew and the teams hit the ice Thursday night ot see how the matchups fared.

The out of town lines from Vegas and points West was that the Zombie roster looked like a strong bet to do well, and they lived up to potential. The Suds played hard all night and the game was close after one and somewhat in reach after two before going all Red by the end of the night.

The Suds knew they had their hands full from the start. Looking at the Zombie first line was enough to let them know they would have to play a defensive style and to bring the effort. They were successful in the strategy while their legs were best in the first period. Larry would score, unassisted, left alone nearby Matt and he buried it. The Zombies would also have a penalty, Captain Elliot for a hook but there was no other scoring in the period. End of 1 Red 1 Gold 0.

The Second would see a bit more “action” in every sense of the word. The teams were clearly in the flow of the game and it was getting appropriately physical for long periods in the first and the second only ramped up the contact as the game stayed close.
Mike Daley would land a nice shot, fed from Steve Baker to bring the lead to two.

Not long after Marc Valenti would chase a puck into the offensive corner only to get tangled up with Mitch and he took a fall into the boards. Marc was less than happy and was certainly feeling it after the spill.
The scrappy play would continue as there were good heated exchanges all over the ice. Capraro and George (several times), Jeff and Nelson boxing each other out in front of Matt, Capraro and Neil, and many more. All were in good spirit and stayed for the most part on the clean side. Mark Reynolds would take a whistle for a Slash on Steve Baker minutes after the KenMitch penalty was up. The Gold would survive both penalties but were slowly going back on their heels.

Fortunately Valenti was back on the ice and in the closing seconds would contribute for his team. Marc would send a long shot from the point (pass from Mike Daley) that would go through all kinds of traffic and under Matt for a goal just as the buzzer would sound. The time expired literally less than a second after the puck hit the back of the net.
3-0 after 2.

Things would just go downhill for the Gold in the third. They opened the period with a too many men on the ice penalty after a mixup between Mark and George. Larry would score unassisted again on the power play and the game was officially turning into rout. Larry followed up his second goal with a trip to the box (stat whore is as stat whore does…) for a slash. This was no problem for the Red as Steve Baker would bag a short handed goal on a nice shot and the blood was clearly in the water. AK would get a goal, assisted by Steve, and the game was 6-0 and the Beercans were almost completely crushed.

Thankfully Roman Kurin would show some flash and would take a long rush and score on a solo bid that broke up Brian Carey’s shutout for the night. That was it for glory on the Gold side and this one would end 6-1.

3^rd Star: Matt Elliot for picking the Red Squad and doing a nice job with the team.
2^nd Star: Steve Baker, 2 helpers and a nice goal. He was a threat all night

1^st Star: Larry Gimme that Stat Sheet Bell. Two goals and an assist and a slashing penalty. Tough consistent play all night. This was a classic Larry game. Nice work.
