We threw out the possiblilty of a guest GM and got a terrific idea back from the team. Billy Pearlman gets all the credit for his suggestion...

"Why not do an all penalty team against an all no-penalty team?" Ok so he didn't really say "no penalty team" but I don't want to repeat it here.

Schlidaveur Management thought this was a tremendous idea. Then after looking at the numbers we decided that this would be a great way to go. So here is the breakdown. We have one team of the penalty leaders and one team that while not completely clean, has almost no penalties. Given that the Cadavers, as a group have been called for 34 penalites versus the 13 collectively called on the Schlitz, they (the Cads) would be the GOON team and the Schlitz will play as the Lady Byng's.

Doubleheader Gm2 Cadavers Tied Up By Blues

Game two of the double header at the Prison by the Bay did not go nearly as well as game one. Granted the opponent was of higher caliber, but that in combination with some sluggish play by the Cads (and fill in Suds) led to a tough match up against our old friends/foes the Blues.

There was a call from somewhere on the bench as the teams skated out for the opening puck drop "Win it for Lizzy!" That was a nice touch. Unfortunately the inspiration of our former net minder wasn't enough to generate significant offense.

The game was tight for sure. A scoreless affair through the first two periods, and despite the Dead in Red getting more and better quality chances than the Blues they still had nothing to show for it. One interesting point was that perennial defense man Mike Campbell skated the first 2 periods as the centerman between Ken Goldenberg and Blake Underhill. It was truely a sight to see Campbell forechecking and bouncing around the Blues zone.

The rest of the forward lines broke down like this. Larry Bell centered Matt Kilroy and iJosh as the holdover line from the first game, and The Russians, Roman Kurin and Matvey Nikhamik were joined by Jeff Fosdick on the wing.

The D pairings were Marc Valenti, and occasional veteran Kevin Manning, along with Greg James and DWH. Overall this defensive group was excellent, snuffing out most of the Blues' chances before they got going.


The third period was really a test. The Blues were able to mount more chances in the third than at any time during the game. The D held firm, but the Skating Dead just couldn't get anything going in the offensive zone.

The game was a draw. Zero - zero at the final buzzer. Kudos to the Defense men and to Mike Gash (1 shutout and only 1 goal given up for the night) for securing the shutout. It was really a pity to not come up with anything on the other end.

No Game Stars for this one... it just didn't feel like a good thing.

I guess that's why they say a tie is like kissing your sister... not so much fun.

Doubleheader Game 1 Schlitz vs Deep Freeze

7-1 Win!

Game one of the Alcatraz State double header was a good one. The flying Beercans ended up with an even ten against the blue clad Freeze and didn't wate any time getting down to business.

Marc Valenti opened the scoring in the first period with an unassisted goal that was apparently a slapper through traffic. 1-0 good guys.

Mike Daley was next on a feed from Larry Bell, and then iJosh put one home before the end of the period with assists from his line mates Pete Capraro and Matt Kilroy. Larry was skating regularly with Matt Elliot and Mike Hammitt as the other line. Daley was paired with Dan Gregson and Mike Campbell with Valenti for the defensive groups. The game saw some good action, mostly in the Deep Freeze end with lots of chances for the guys in Gold.

The second period was really more of the same as the Beercans kept up the pressure. Larry got a goal assisted by Valenti and Elliott, then Mike Hammitt put one home from Campbell before the middle frame was complete. At this point, even the Suds, who have been known to give up a lead were feeling pretty good. Mike Gash was barely tested until the third period was well underway.

Speaking of the third.... Mike Campbell was whistled off at the 13 minute mark (the first, and ONLY penalty of the game for the Gold) and the Freeze was able to convert on the powerplay. Colapsing in thier own zone the gold gave up a number of shots, one of which made its way through. Too bad about the shutout.... Campbell wasn't happy about it given his unprintable comments upon returning to the bench.

Mike Hammitt finished out the period with a very nice unasssisted goal of his own to bring the score to 6-1. That was the way that one ended.

iJosh tells me that Mike Daley scored one more before the end of the game so really it was 7-1.

That goal was Daley's second of the game and was assisted by Kilroy and iJosh hizownbadself.

That kinda changes my gamestars a little....

Game Stars.

3rd Star- Larry Bell for a goal and an assist and lots of ice covered. We are going to add Mike Daley here as well given that after a recount he ended with 2 goals on the night. Mike has been outstanding in his rookie season so far....

2nd Star- Marc Valenti, another goal and assist performance, worthy of note.

1st Star- I'm going with Mike "The Hammer" Hammitt. Again Mike is showing that his mobility has increased and he is really making some nice contributions. The chances have been coming and his 2 goal performance shows he's making good on them. Plus he brought 16oz. Schlitz pounders for after the game! Keep up the good work.

Honorable Mention 1: Mike Gash... sorry dude... one goal is good... but you were never really tested.

That's right. All hands on deck for Wednesday night as both teams skate at Alcatraz State and not against each other. Thats right a double header. The Schlitz take on the Deep Freeze at 9:20pm in the early game, and the Cadavers face off against our old friends the Blues at 10:30pm in the nightcap. Check your roster spot and bring your "A" game. If we win both than we can still pull the Cadavers back up to .500 and we can get the Suds up over .500 by a game. A big night and a big pair of games for our teams.

Tigers Claw Back! Tie Up Suds!

3 - 3 Tie

A good solid roster and plenty of optimism went into last night's tilt with the Tigers. This was a team that the Teams have played very close but never really gotten over. In the previous three meetings with the Tigers we were a collective 0-1-2 with both ties standing at 3-3 and the loss 2-3. The most recent meeting was a 3-3 Tie with Kilroy in net where the Tigers did a good job coming back in the third period. The first time we saw these guys was back on the first game of the winter season when we...wait a second... skated to another 3-3 tie. I think you might be spotting a trend here. A week later they... come on... came from behind to beat us 3-2. But all that was in the past right?
Apparently the Skating Dead couldn't buck the trend as they jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period at Milton Academy last night only to let it slip away as a 3-3 tie before the final buzzer sounded.
Things got off to a great start as the Dead in Red cycled beautifully around the Tiger end. Chances came by the handfull as the forwards cycled low, passed well, and snapped off good shots. In fact the Zombies broke through about 5 minutes into the game when Rookie Chuck Slate in his debut performance with the Cads banged home a pass from Mike Jasse to put the good guys up by one. Way to be in the right place, and close the deal Chuck. Before the period was out Kevin Parker netted a nice combo from Chris Fosdick and Mike Daley. Those three ran as a line with Scott Pounds and iJosh working with Jasse and Slate. The forwards had a great first period and the Dead were up 2-0 and feeling good. But you've seen this story before... haven't you?
The Second Period saw a remarkable momentum shift as the Zombies seemed to be clutched by rigormortis and the chances became fewer and fewer. Gone was the clean cycling in the Tiger end, soon they started mounting chances on CEO/BMF Matt Kilroy. The defensive pairings were Mike Campbell and Greg James as the Twin Towers, backed up by Jeff Fosdick and Marc Valenti...they would be the "we might be old but at least we're slow" pairing. The Tigers were able to break through as as far as the blogger remembers... scored at least one and maybe two before the end of the second. If it wasn't before than it was early after the start of the third and the Zombies knew they were in a fight.
Zombie Pride did indeed surface for a while at the begining of the Third Period when the Dead in Red got a handfull of good chances and started to get things moving again. Things were looking better and at least the Cads looked like they had something going when holding the puck down low in the zone Jeff Fosdick was able to feed Kevin Parker who labeled a great shot for the go ahead goal with less than 10 minutes remaining. Things were looking good as the Dead dug in for the clock kill. It wasn't long after that when our old nemesis... the whistle tripped us up. Greg James was sent to the box for a rough and the Zombies were forced into the PK. Kilroy and the defense held strong, completed the kill and continued the grind under 5 minutes.
Then with 1 minute 30 seconds remaining another whistle. This time Campbell for a hook. The Tigers called time and then pulled thier keeper for a 2 man advantage. The Zombies countered with the remaining 3 defensemen and Chris up front. The Cads cleared the zone twice but the Tigers came back. Then intercepting an outlet one of thier forwards buried the turnover from about 12 feet and got the equalizer with 40 seconds on the clock.

Crusher. The kittys got us again. Looks like we should have checked our history on this one, but I don't know if it would have prevented us from re-living it.

No Game Stars after this one. It felt too crappy.

Friday Night at the Campbell Poly Pavillion

There was some Friday Night Lights over at Campbell's house this past weekend. Here are a few picks, courtesy of Mrs. Campbell, of the fun that was had.
The rink is a really nice set-up that should provide lots of fun if it stays cold. Even with the cold snap we fractured the ice in several places in a short time, limiting the number of people we could skate at the same time. Keep your fingers crossed for a good long cold-snap and you too could be skatin' at the Campbell Poly Pavillion.
Special thanks obviously go out to the Campbells for having all of us delinquents over on a Friday night!

Mid-Season Stat Update!

Mid-Season Stats.
Schlidavers Winter 2008

Here it is... The numbers you've all been waiting for. We are probably 1-2 games past the midpoint, but I wanted to include this weeks games.
As always check your numbers and let me know if you see anything out of whack.
An interesting race going on at the top of the leaderboard I think. Larry Bell (17pts)has just this week moved ahead of Roman Kurin (16pts)for the top spot, and iJosh (14pts) is lurking not far behind. Impressive Rookie Mike Daley continues to shine and he is only 4 points off the pace. Dan Hebert (DWH) rounds out the top 5 with 7 goals and 11total points. After that group is the typical cluster of vets at 8 points, but any one of these guys can break the top five with a good game or two.
Despite the ever changing situation in the pipes I think we are getting good numbers there too. Mike Gash is holding solid as the workhorse with a t 2.36 GAA after 11 games. He was 6-3-2 over those starts. Kilroy just got his first win but if you look closely a 4.00 after 7 games is really not so bad... especially given that that number is a bit inflated from the 9 goal game. Other than that game he has given up 5 once, 3 three times, and 1 once (last night). That's not too shabby for a guy who has played the position less than 10 times.


Larry is also at the top of the penalty list courtesy of his two ejections. He's followed by the usual suspects Matvey, Hammitt, and Campbell. George and Greg James aren't too far off the pace and with a few blowups could jump right up into the running.
In general I think we've been doing a better job with penalties. There have really only been a handfull over the last month. Good work everyone.

Interestingly enough both teams have been hovering right around the .500 mark. We have 3 games this week and if we sweep (Cads have 2 and Schlitz have 1) then both teams will be 1 game over .500. That would be pretty cool. Its never too early to start thinking about playoff positioning.

Great work everyone. I think that we are doing ok overall. It would be nice to see if we can get up over the .500 hump and stay there for the second half.

Should be a good race for the points leader in the second half. Play well everyone.

2-1 Win!

Isn't there a song that says... "you came... just when I needed you most..." ? Well the Flying Beercans got a couple of things they needed the most at just the right time last night at the Prison by the Bay.

The First was our friends the Generals on the Schedule. The Schlitz fielded 11 last night with a lineup with a mix of vets and newcomers (and only 2 "regular" defensemen) on a chilly late night at our favorite place to play. At least it was warmer in the rink than outside.
The Second was a One Goal Shutdown and the First Win for Netminder CEO/BMF Madd Matt Kilroy. Hard to believe that its taken this long for Matty to get his first W. He's been playing great all season (pre and post Thumb incident) and it was overdue. The great play of Kilroy was backed by the...
Third Thing. A Terrific step up performance by fill in defenseman Pete Capraro who had a Goal and and Assist that powered the 'cans to a 2-1 win at chilly U-Alcatraz.

The game was tight through the first until Capraro capped a rush with a beautiful wrist shot that beat the keeper stick side. That came near the end of the first period and was a nice lift. The Gold had been getting chances all period but it was nice to finally break through.
Pete played opposite Jeff Fosdick, and Mike Hammitt partnered with Marc Valenti. Hammitt had a great game in his own right getting off hard shots and controlling the blue line abley. Hard to really call him a "fill-in" but he's logged most of his time lately at forward so last night was a slight departure. Did I mention no penalites..? Good Job Mike.

The Flying Beercans would score again halfway through the second when Vet Supreme Nelson Sharfman banged one home from iJosh and Capraro that gave the Gold some insurance. Nelson was grinding it out all night (as usual) and its always nice to see him rewarded for his effort. He and iJosh were joined by Chris Fosdick, Mike Jasse, Scott Pounds, and newcomers Mark Bates and Blake Underhill. All the forwards did a good job, despite heavy legs to keep after the Generals and not let them up as they got more desperate late in the game.
The Shutout (while close...) was just not to be for Kilroy as he let up a long (but hard... not to mention difficult) shot from the point with about 2 minutes left in the third.
There were only a few anxious moments after that and the 'cans finished this one out in style.

3rd Star- I'm going with Hammit. I really think he had one of his best nights with us. He covered a lot of ground, constantly breaking up plays as they came up the ice. Even though none of his shots made it through... it sends a message to the keeper... and beleive me he's thinking about it. Good job Mike.



2nd Star- Pete Capraro. Goal and an Assist and a whole 'lotta ice covered in a really good step in performance. This guy has excelled wherever he has been asked to help. A true team player. Great job Pete!




1st Star- Who else can it be? His first (long overdue) win after a number of solid performances for the CEO/BMF Matt Kilroy. Great work Matt... you've been a game saver for us and your play has gotten better and better. Congrats on the one goal win.


Fourth Period Awards to all the guys who stayed to swill a quick beer slurpy in the ambient 3 degrees and breezy after the game. It shows true grit to drink your beer while it freezes in the can. All we were missing was the sweeping searchlights, barking dogs and the old fashioned siren to complete the feel. Good job men... no one beats us in the 4th. In tribute to all of you I run this photo... because it was a good excuse as any to run it... enjoy. I can't help but think she better skate pretty hard in order to keep warm... no?

Zombies fall to Windsuckers at Alcatraz!

3-2 Loss.

A cold and lonely night for the Zombies as they took the schedule shaft against the Windsuckers at the chilly Prison on the Bay. A good turnout showed plenty of Zombie Pride, especially CEO, BMoFo, Mad Matt Kilroy in net, but just fell short in the end. To expedite things here we are going to join Guest Blogger Mike Campbell, already in progress with his summary report....

"We played the Windsuckers… There actually was a LOT of wind – flags all straight out along the drive into the prison, making the 11 degrees feel like minus 11 – but NOT much sucking. Both teams played damn good.

O. Lines: Larry, Nelson, Kenny the Goon (he got the only PIMs – tripping)

D. Lines: Dans & Mikes

We lost 3 – 2, but the game was tied at 0 well into the second period. Kilroy made some rock solid saves against a pretty comparable team through the first period and almost all of the second. Their keeper was out of his mind. We out shot them at least 2 to 1 (I think Nelson had at least 15 shots alone), and he was gobbling up everything.

With about 5 mins left in the first, the face-off was in the their zone, on our right side. As we lined up Larry told me it was coming my way (I was on left D, Daley on the right). When he saw who he was facing, in Brady-esque fashion, Larry audibled back to Daley that it was coming to him instead. I let Daley know I had a lot of space open as well. Puck dropped. Larry wins the face off to Daley. Nelson crashes toward the net. Daley dishes across the ice to me. I shoot hard (but wide left – imagine), but hard enough that it bounces off the boards, behind the net to the other side to Nelson who slams it home. 13 from 77 and 31. Good guys one zip.

Kilroy continues to stonewall them well into the second. But then... With the puck in THEIR zone, one of their guys clears it. It’s right on net, but moving slowly down the ice. As Kilroy’s beginning to handle the puck, and looking up to see who he can pass it to, well, let’s just say he forgot the handling the puck bit. Oops. Under the stick. Slowly. Toward. The. Goal. Line. So. Slow. That. He. Has. Time. To. Lunge. For. It.

But to no avail.

Puck crosses the goal line. Barely. End of the second period. Ones.

Third period, pretty early. Kenny the Goon goes off for tripping. Fifteen seconds into the penalty kill, they get a two on one break-away. We keep one of their better skaters to the outside on the left side, but he shoots from way out there and beats Matty five hole. Uh-oh. Bad guys, two to one.

Middle of the third. Puck in the neutral zone. Going back and forth there, but we eventually get it going our way, and Matvey carries it into their zone along the left boards. With no other forwards in front of me, I go with him and he dishes it onto my stick. I head straight for the cage, and in the left slot beat the keeper glove side with a wrister. Wooo HOO.
77 from 25. Tied at two.

To no avail, though. They brought the friggin’ army with them, and while we had the perfect ten skaters, they had at least fifteen. Fresh legs wore away at us, and they score a few minutes later, on a pretty scrappy play in front.

Again, except for the first two goals (the dribbler, and five hole shot from way downtown), Kilroy was on fire.

Overall, great effort by skating dead at the Prison, late night. It sucks going out there on a freezing cold night, to play in the shithole at 10:30, and then lose, but we gave it our all.

Amazing how much I can rememebr when I'm not cocked.

Lets get some "Mad Props" for Mr. Mike Campbell for the excellent game summary. Great job dude, with the goal and with the blog. The blogger is in your debt.
So other than major Kudos to both Mssrs. Campbell and Kilroy... We'll leave it at that.
