Xmas Daver? Champs of fall comes to an end...

The bitter chill of the winter's eve hung in the air as the Schlidavers annual pre-Christmas hockey game commenced at the Canton Ice House. Among the myriad players on the frosty rink, one family stood out—the Sharfmans of Foxboro, Massachusetts, a dynasty in the world of hockey.

Nelson Sharfman, the versatile patriarch of the family, was a force to be reckoned with. Equally adept at playing forward and goalie, his skill set was as unpredictable as the New England weather. Taylor, the dynamic son, played defense with the finesse of a forward, dazzling spectators with his lightning-fast moves and pinpoint accuracy. Skylar, the athletic daughter, brought a different kind of energy to the ice, her agility and determination setting her apart. And overseeing it all was Gretchen, the matriarch, whose strategic mind and unyielding support held the family together.

For years, the Sharfmans had dreamt of taking the ice together as a family, and on the evening of December 20, 2023, that dream became a reality. Clad in their dark jerseys, they formed a formidable lineup against the opposing white team.

The first two periods were a whirlwind of fast-paced action, with neither side giving an inch. The score stood deadlocked at 2-2, and that's when Nelson and Gretchen, the anchors of the family, decided it was time to assert their dominance.

"We're a better family than this," declared Nelson, a glint of determination in his eyes.

The third period began, and the Sharfmans unleashed their secret weapon—Skylar. The athletic daughter, whose skills surpassed even her family's high expectations, took the game by storm. She maneuvered through the opposition with finesse, leaving defenders in her wake.

The goals came in rapid succession—top shelf, a wicked wrist shot from the slot, and an insurance goal that added icing to the proverbial cake. The dark team's offensive onslaught left the white team dazed and confused, their heads spinning in disbelief.

Coach Moorachian, the frustrated coach of the white team, tried to motivate his players with a mix of encouragement and fervent yelling, but nothing could stem the Sharfman tide.

In the end, the final buzzer sounded with the dark team emerging victorious with a score of 5-2. The Sharfmans had not only won the game but had created a spectacle that would go down in history as one of the greatest displays of family bonding on the ice.

As they skated off the rink, the Sharfmans embraced, their smiles shining through the frosty air. It wasn't just a victory on the scoreboard; it was a triumph of family unity, determination, and the unbreakable bonds forged on the icy battleground of the Canton Ice House. The Schlidavers annual pre-Christmas game of 2023 would forever be etched in the memories of the Sharfman family and all who witnessed the extraordinary display of teamwork and familial love.

Champs of Fall - WinterDaveurs A tale of Wednesday night

In the frosty halls of the Schlidavers men's D-level hockey league, a team of seasoned warriors took to the ice. With their robust bellies, shining bald heads, and a collection of skaters whose ankles defied conventional wisdom, the Schlidavers were a sight to behold.

In a game where strategy was as elusive as their youthful days, the players had mastered the art of slapping the puck up the ice, hoping for the sweet sound of an icing call that signaled a merciful change in the lineup. Shift lengths varied wildly, with some players clinging to the ice for a marathon 5 minutes, fueled by sheer determination—or perhaps forgetfulness.

The glory days of skilled players had become distant memories, as they departed for the allure of the greener pastures known as the Ice Holes. A bitter rivalry brewed between the Schlidavers and their former stars, culminating in a heated brawl during their last encounter.

Passing was a foreign concept, deemed unnecessary in the grand scheme of their strategic masterpiece. Instead, the puck met the brute force of slaps, careening up the ice like a runaway train. Goals were scarce, precious gems in a sea of missed opportunities. Savoring a goal became an art form, with celebrations echoing the triumphs of ages past.

The Schlidavers' journey through the D-level hockey league was a testament to resilience, camaraderie, and the sheer joy of the game—played with a unique flair that only this ragtag team could muster.

Epic stand-in goalie performance by Nelson Sharfman helps Schlitz earn tie with Scape-Douches!

CANTON — The Schlidavers aren't done with Nelson Sharfman just yet.
Sharfman, a 51-year-old Zamboni driver, was forced to be Schlitz's emergency goalie for its road game Tuesday night against the Scape-Douches. Sharfman, of Foxboro, MA., stopped eight of 13 shots he faced in his NHL debut, helping the Schlitz capture a 5-5 victory.
Afterward, he was named the game's first, second, and third star. Sharfman came into the game in the first period after injuries to regular netminders Joe Jarck and Randy Dudek.
After the game, the Schlidavers announced Sharfman will attend their next game against the Street Cones.
"See you Monday, Sharfman!" the club said on its Twitter account. "Sharfman will be in the building on Monday and will be our @VectorSecurity Siren Sounder!"
For Sharfman, it's another opportunity for him to hang out with his new teammates.
"They're flying me down to Brockton for their game on Monday so I'll get to spend more time with the guys, which is good," he told reporters in Canton on Tuesday at the 'davers practice facility. "They're a great team, great organization."
It was also announced that Sharfman will be making rounds on American talk shows on Wednesday as well, including The Today Show on NBC, Fox and Friends and CNN World Sport.
After the win over ‘douches, the Schlitz posted a video of Sharfman being showered by ‘davers players with water when he came into the team's locker room. Head coach George Moorachian praised both Sharfman and his team for their efforts.
"It's not often in a game that you get tied to a great memory," he said. "All you have is the memories you've got and you guys just gave me one, you gave each other one.
"But it's a memory I'm going to have forever, the way you guys played in that third period for you (pointing to Sharfman) and the way you (Sharfman) played for us."
What's more, the stick Sharfman used in the game is going to the Hockey Hall of Fame.
Canton Mayor Mary-Ann Baldwin also announced Wednesday will be "Nelson Sharfman Day" in the city.
The Schlitz started selling shirts with Sharfman's name and No. 14 after the game. The team says Sharfman will get royalties and a portion of the proceeds will go to a kidney foundation in honour of the goaltender, who underwent a kidney transplant in 2004.
Predictably, Sharfman was inundated with congratulations and well wishes for his accomplishment following the game. And the high of the incident resulted in precious little sleep that night.
"I got off the ice (Tuesday) and I think I had 160 text messages," said Sharfman, who has worked as a Zamboni driver for the Canton Jr. Huskies and also has served as a goalie in workouts and practices for the Cadavers and Schlitz. "My phone was blowing up and hasn't stopped.
"(Schlidavers GM Jeff Fosdick) texted me (Wednesday) morning just to say congratulations, which was awesome. I got a text from former ‘Davers coach Matt Kilroy. I spoke to Campbell (PTC head coach Mike Campbell) . . . obviously it was a tough loss for them but he was happy for me as well. It's been great."
Sharfman admitted he was surprised to have received the game's first, second, and third star.
"I got off the ice and I was going back to the change room and the guy stopped me and said, 'You're going nowhere. You're going back on the ice.' " Sharfman said. "I thought I was getting the third star.
"It (first, second, third stars) was really cool. I was surprised how many people stuck around in the arena afterwards. The ovation I got from the Canton fan, even though I wasn't on the Scape-douches team was fantastic."
Sharfman said Lizzie, a former ‘davers goalie, was very supportive of him during and after the game.
"Lizzie actually sat with me in the second intermission," Sharfman said. "He said, 'Have fun, this is your time. This isn't your full-time job but you're out here, you know what you're doing. Just be a goalie and make saves.'
"I settled down in the third period and he came in after and he was pretty pumped up."
Sharfman admitted he was surprised to have not faced more shots from the Douches but credited the Schlitz for that.
"You figure they (Douches) would've been shooting from everywhere," he said. "But Schlitz did a great job of blocking everything and keeping everything to the outside.
"They didn't really give them much of a chance to shoot from everywhere, really."

A Very Daver Christmas... 2019

The assembled 'Davers met last Wednesday night for what seems to have become the annual Pre-Christmas Daver. The Cads and Suds faced off at the Quincy Shea rink where Black triumphed over Gold but lets be honest... the tale is in the Yankee swap... and so we bring you now... to the post game locker room...

If that doesn't say "Christmas Spirt" I dont.... uh... nevermind.

Anyway we had some fun, there was a flamingo beer slide something going on, or around...

1st Annual Schlidaver Golf Tourney! Big thanks to Jared Gorden for organizing! Congrats to the winning team! Nice medals! A great day and a fun time had by all.

How Long Can You Tread Frozen Water? Ha Ha Ha Ha

RIGHT!!!!

So it has been quite some time since there has been a blog.  However, occasionally there are events that would cause such a change in the status quo.  This Sunday night was one of those events.  

Skating this evening against the StreetCones would be:
Randy in net.  Defense would consist of George and iJosh.  The forwards would be Paul, Baumann , and K.Mitch. 

YES!  That is it.  And to put this into perspective, Mitch was a late addition and Baumann was less than 50/50 until well into Sunday.  So there was a fair possibility that there would have been 3 skaters available in front of Randy.  

The StreetCones usually treat our full teams like, well, street cones.  So there was little hope this would be anything less than an unmitigated disaster.  So about 30 seconds into the game the StreetCones would strike, netting their 1st goal.  An initial save by Randy would be picked up and netted.  1-0 Orange.  16 minutes and 2 goals later the tired 5 would skate to the bench content that they were only down 3-0.  After the 3rd goal, George and a Cone would get into a scuffle and both be sent to the box.  5 on 5.  However without another man on the bench for the Cads, it would be a 5 on 4 even strength 2 minutes.  And miraculously the Cads would escape unscathed.  

The second period, the Cones would get their 4th goal and go up 4-0.  But the faithful-five would do their best to keep the deficit at 4 goals.  Time after time; Randy save after save; icing after icing the Cads would keep the Cones at bay.  Then it happened.  Baumann grabbed the puck at mid-ice and got to the top of the left circle.  He riffled a shot past the Cone in net.  4-1.  The fans - the skaters in the previous game who just wanted see how this would play out - now turned their heads and were watching.  Not quite "The Russian is cut!!!!" moment, but a moment none-the-less. Somehow the Cads would end the 2nd period down 4-1.  

Between the 1st and 2nd, Ed the Ref asked if we just wanted to ask the Cones for a player.  Mitch said he was curious to see how this played out.  Now between the 2nd and 3rd and only down 3 goals - Hell, why not?!


3rd period now underway, Baumman would quickly net another, almost identical goal.  Quote from Randy, "Now they are going to get angry".  However the Skating Zombies (how appropriate at this point) were maintaining the 4-2 score.  Then it happened.  The Russian really was cut.  Baumman! BAUMMAN!!.  And now we are tied at 4 with 10 minutes to go.  One would think that the Cones would stop playing down to a team that was pretty much "The Skating Dead".  But somehow they just could not break through.  <Cue uplifting dramatic music> Baumman breaks away and puts one past the Cone in net.  The fans go wild.  Well really they just grabbed another beer and walked to the glass to watch this happen.  This would continue until about 5 minutes to go.  K.Mitch would pursue the puck deep in the Cone zone.  He would essentially fall into the guy with the puck and Ed would give Mitch 2 minutes to think about his poor conditioning.  In the PK, iJosh would block a shot with his hip, only to have it bounce right to the other Cone in the area.  He would put it on net.  Randy would get a piece of it, but not enough. 5-5 with 5 minutes to go.  With about 1:30 to go, a Cone would skate down the left side along with iJosh.  He would lose his footing and twist to the ice.  iJosh - despite being an arm's length away was called for the penalty.  Bad call.  Even the other ref said so.  Ed would soon apologize by calling an equally questionable call on the Cones to make it 4 on 4.  However the Cones would break out of their zone after an attempt by the Cads to untie the game.  This would leave George all alone on a 3 on 1.  Randy, again would make the attempt, but he was outgunned (what?)! Outmanned (what?)! Outnumbered! Outplanned!  And with less than 1 minutes to go the Cones would take a 6-5 lead.  


That lead would hold.  However the Cads would skate to a valiant 6-5 loss.  So the next time you see the Fatigued Five and Randy let them know that you would have loved to have seen it.  I'm sure their response would be - well next time just get on the @#$%ing ice.

Death, Taxes, and the Blues being a bunch of @$$#0!#s; some things are just guaranteed in life.  Despite that fact, the Golden Beer Cans would make it as difficult as possible for Les Blues (which is French for the d!(^&#@*s).  Schlitz would skate only 7: K.Mitch,  Nelson, Daley, Bauer, iJosh, Baker, and Valenti with the first 4 mostly playing forward and the latter 3 playing mostly defense.  

The Blues would skate their - mostly usual - set of characters and their new addition, a young kid named Jay Galinauskas(#2) with his red pants and red helmet.  He played against us last game and simply put, his skillset is far and above anyone else on the ice.  Knowing this going into the game, the plan was to do our best to keep him in check.  However we were not confident that our attention to this effort could slow him down much.  Baker tripped him early and ended up in the box, but #2 would score his first goal 7:24 into the game.  This would be followed 1:31 later by his second tally of the night.  Already annoyed, Bauer would crosscheck him near the boards.  He would fall back into iJosh's crosscheck #2 headed toward the ice.  Mercifully there would be no call. Gold would not put up much of an offensive threat to this point. 


In the second period the Blues would strike again.  This time the play would be started by #2 and finished by one of his lackeys who was just smart enough to stand in front of the net and let the puck bounce off him.  (See Gretzky and any forward he made look good).  Valenti, now getting aggitated, would check #2 into the boards.  However, the problem according the ref was not the check (they seemingly were letting that go a bit), but was the high stick.  So Valenti would send 2 minutes in the sin bin.  This would get Daley going.  He would steal the puck mid ice and power into the offensive zone and put in a short handed tally.  Though the Blues would end the power play abruptly after that. 4-1 Blues.  The rest of the period was the #2 show as he showed just how much better than us he was.  He would net one more goal and another assist, but not before Bauer would crosscheck him again.  This time, however, he would make his way to the box.  

Early in the third period, Daley would get called for a trip. Nothing would come of it.  After the kill, #2 would put in 2 more goals with a 2 minutes of one another.  Mitch would find his way to the box.  And again, gold would find a way to put in a short handed goal.  This time Baker would find the back of the net.  Unfortunately for Baker his night would end soon after that.  He would get called for a double minor.  A trip and then roughing after the whistle.  Though I still don't get the 1st call and the 2nd should have been coincidental.  Later in the period, iJosh shifting to forward for a shift, would take the puck deep into the zone and to the back boards.  Passing it in front of the next it would bounce and find its way to Bauer's stick and to the back of the net.  8-3 Blues.  Bauer would put one more in, again short handed, to make it 8-4.  Nelson would net a short handed goal to make it 8-4. But the Blues would put another one in to make it 9-4.  As the game wound down, Valenti took a few shots at #2 and would be told to hit the shower.  Then after with less than a minute to go, #2 would take a slap shot from short range.  That and a dipsy-do attempt from between his legs prompted Bauer to warn #2, "If you do that again I'll @#$%ing take your head off!"  Well said.  After the final puck drop, #2 would have gotten one more cross check had his teammate not seen the 2 gold jersey lining him up as he waited to attempt a one timer from the right slot.  His teammate dumped the puck in to the corner and ended the game.  As the buzzer blew #2 was told, "Good thing your teammate was smart.  Otherwise you were getting hit hard".  

That all said, we complained to the ref about them not reporting to Paul the discrepency in talent on teams in general and implored them to say somethimg about the Blues #2.  It is suggested we do the same.  If Paul doesn't comply, whether it be us or another team, someone IS going to take his head off soon.

Something followed me down Babcock street last night. The familiar vortex whipping my hair, streetlight shadow jumping out in front of me as I carried my hockey bag down the hill, and in through the back door of the rink by the Zamboni ramp. It feels like home, in this old concrete bunker by the railroad tracks, so many warm, distant memories swirling in the darkness and the cold breeze. The sound of the game echoes around the dim empty space, the smell of the rubber mats in the tunnel beneath the stands... it's always good to be home, at least for a visit. 

It was great night to begin the 2014-15 Winter campaign for the schlidaveurs. Conveniently, and according to de facto tradition we started off with a Schlidaveur on Monday night at BU's Walter Brown Arena. It's always nice after a summer of playing with ourselves... I mean against ourselves... That we start off playing ourselves. Stands to reason we'd be good at it.

Decent turn out, even with last minute drops and an add we had 9 a side. As players filtered in, Ken (email? Why should I answer the email?) "AK" Douville showed up to even things out. Fosdick gave him some razz about the email which would have consequences on the ice.

Rosters.

Gold: Randy, Reynolds, Jeff, Valenti as D, Jared, baker, and Mitch as a group, and Nelson, Taylor, and Seva as the other. 

Black: sully in net, DWH, Bauer, iJosh as D; Larry, AK, Matt, and Matvey, Scot, and John Bric. 

Newcomers from this summer Chris Taylor and John Bric got shirts and were welcomed into our sad bizzare fraternity of middle aged hockey... So congrats to them. Welcome aboard boys, how long you stay is your own fault. 

Ken (now AK) was ready and told Jeff during warmups "Before I didn't care, but because of the locker room I'm going all out tonight to win, you'll see." 

So it was to be. The teams were pretty evenly matched. It was about halfway through the first when Larry would spring Ken, err AK who would make a nice move and bury the first goal behind Randy. He made sure to point it out at the face off. Good stuff, calling the shot and delivering. He was a contributor all night. 

It seemed Black played better in the first all around and the first ended 1-0 Black. 

Gold would recover a little in the second and got some traction finally in the offensive end. Jared made a nice play and springing Jeff made for the net. Jeff shot-passed and Jared got another swipe at it but Sully was there. Mitch, following the play, was right there and banged home the equalizer. The (imaginary) crowd went crazy for the long time veteran who was returning to the club after taking the summer off. Great way to come back. We look forward to seeing lots more, and lots more scoring from Mitch this season. 

Well it wasn't all good in the second for gold. On a long clearing pass randy ranged out to play the puck near the corner. Jeff came back to take the play but the pass was miffed and the puck went straight to the front of the net where Larry popped it in for the lead for Black. Larry, never shy about a point doesn't mind picking up the trash. The Stat whore was delighted to be on the board. End of 2, 2-1 Black.

The third saw more great bak mans forth action. Both sully and Randy had strong moments in net. There was less than ten minutes left when Jared would take a breakaway home by roofing one over Sully as he sprawled. Jared's backhand is a fearsome thing... Soft deadly hands. The game was tied down the stretch 2-2. That's how this one would end after great efforts on both sides. Nice way to kick off the year with a fun, hard fought 'daveur at old Walter Brown. 

Game stars:

3rd Star: Ken "Mitch" Goldenberg. A great goal for his return to the ice. Welcome back. 

2nd Star: Ken "AK" Douville. Way to take your motivation and deliver. AK was productive all night with many chances plus that strong first goal. Great job. 

1st Star: Jared "deadly hands" Gorden. A goal (a beauty) and an assist. Jared always seems to be the axis in which the game is decided. Good work out there. 

Honorable Mention 1: Jim Sullivan. A great game in the pipes. Thanks again for helping us all out by playing net. 

Honorable Mention 2: Also with a goal and an assist... Stat Whore Larry Bell... I just put him here because I dont think he counts game stars as a legit stat.

Now... The blogger felt good writing this one... but dont expect a full game story or literary ruminations for every game. I'm trying to nurse this puppy back into shape, if I've got the time, and the energy. Regardless... its good to be "back", and thank you for reading.

Summer of Daveur - Week 5

Okay, so there hasn't been a blog for sometime and this one is by no means going to be as robust as they once were.  Reason: the bloggers have jobs and I now like mine, so blogging  on company time is a rarity.  Anyhow here is how Week 5 of SOD played out.

Okay so first off, [Iain] Michel somehow ended up on black (wearing red). So some extras were added to black, Michael for one - who was in red.  Then after noting that the sides were a little uneven numbers-wise and that he had already scored a goal for the Cads, Elliott traded himself to the Schlitz for a couple of water bottles and a used goalie whistle.


Schlitz would storm back and take the lead. The Cads would keep coming back, but the Beer cans would keep going ahead. In the end I think the score was 6-4. But I lost track. During the 3rd period with about 8 minutes left Reynolds tried to take Lizzie's head off. Reynolds tried to clear the zone up the boards and hit Liz right in the ear. She dropped and claimed she was okay, but left the ice for the evening.  Hopefully Liz is okay and will be quickly back in black & white stripes.

The 4th period was scarce.  Daley and Elliott provided some refreshments. However neither Daley nor Elliott were brutally murdered after helping a woman walking down the street with a gas can.  She needed to find a gas station and get back to her car. Daley drove and Elliott navigated.  At one point we saw Daley's car pass and  Bauer commented, "Either they found an open gas station or that woman found a Honda". Shortly thereafter they returned with nary a scratch and grabbed another beer.

Long time no blog folks.  After a long summer season of Daveur™ the Schlidaveurs Incorporated returned to the NESHL Ice.  This first non-Daveur game would pit the Golden Beer Cans - donning the new slick unis - against the Tigers.  

Early on it did not look good.  Jasse and KenMitch had to bail and Campbell was a no-show.  But that was not the issue.   The big issue was that due to circumstanses beyond our control (Randy having twins and Tom having his fantasy hockey draft) we were scrambling to find a keeper.  Thankfully we would find a fill-in goaltender.  Though one with little experience.  

So the lines would shape up to be:

Larry centering iJosh and Leykin
Roman centering Matvey and Rudenko
Defense would rotate with: Reynolds, George and DWH.  

The action would be fast and furious.  #8 on El Tigre was a tough challenge.  Many times he would rifle a shot in from the blue line that was bound to find its way to the net.  Though with much luck it never found the back of it.  

There were many chances.  All missed.  The Tiger goalie would stand on his head at times.  He would knock away a few certain goals.  Ones from Larry, iJosh and a few others.  There were also a couple posts and  missed empty nets.  However in the middle of a line changes, Matvey would sail into the high slot from the blue line calling for the puck like a former BU forward had done often times on this ice, but most notably a few miles north-west in 1980.  Larry would feed the puck to Matvey who buried the chance and put the Schlitz up 1-0.  

The Tigers would be intent on tying the game.  And they had their chances.  Seventeen by the goalies count.  That does not include a puck off the post on a relatively open net.  But the goalie in goal would not let it happen.  Not this night.  The Schlitz D knowing that the goalie needed the help worked relentlessly to keep the puck away.  And they did not disappoint.  

In the end.  Schlitz would hold on for the 1-0 shutout win and secure its first points against a team not managed by Schlidaveur Inc.

1st Star: Mr. Zero: Nelson Sharfman. There is nothing I can say that the score cannot explain.  THANK YOU for playing net.  And congrats on the shutout.

Winter season opener-daveur!

Nice to be back on the ice last night in the cozy historic confines BU's Walter Brown Arena. The new look Daveurs faced off in our first league game since last spring, when the Beercans hoisted the championship trophy.

The night had drama early as the fill in keeper for the Cads apparently only arrived with one skate. That deflated the mood for a bit until, in a big upset, a skate appeared! Management would like to throw a big thank you shout out to the Zamboni driver the helped us out.
The Daveurs owe you a cold one sir. 

So back in business we were able to start the game with about 10 mins remaining in the first.

The game was tight. Gold spent a lot of time chasing Paul Chapman around in his new shirt. but there was no blood after the first abreviated period.
Black/Red would get the first one after Matvey would tip home a shot from Bauer late in the second period to take the lead. 
The Gold would see the inside of the penalty box plenty, with Douville going once and Campbell going twice (on his way to 3 and an ejection) before the end of two... 
Apparently the big shock in re-joining the league was a bucket full of penalties...

Gold would play tough, and the Larry, Sully, Daley group would do very well on a few cycles through the offensive zone. But it wouldn't be enough to get over on the man with one skate. The fill- in Steve would not let a thing by and the gold was left in the cold.
Roman would grab an empty netter as time wound down to make the final 2-0.
