Red get revenge in Daveur Rematch!

Last week’s Schlidaveur matchup was such a hit, and a tightcontest that with another ‘davuer scheduled for this week it was a natural torun a rematch of the same two teams. So that’s what we did last night in MiltonAcademy… with a few slight alterations.

A couple of guys couldn’t make the game so there was aslight shuffle. Gold lost Marietta and picked up Teddy Locke to play net andbumped Sully up to the forwards. Red ended up 2 players light losing Jasse andBittker and rolling with 9.

The Gold felt very good about the game and came out withlots of confidence that adding Sully up front and Red being down to 9 playersthey would have a better chance to pull off another win against the talentedCads.

That confidence got results in the early going when Sullywould score taking a play from Campbell and Parker. They had been grinding awayin the Red zone and Sully jumped on the pass and showed the finish he’s had allseason.

While Gold felt good, the play was pretty even. At the 8minute mark Red would strike back. The play from Baker to George would find DanGregson standing right by the slot where he would bury the game tieing goal bya sprawling Teddy.

Gold was not to have its momentum checked so early and MikeDaley would take matters into his own hands. Mike would break out on a nicerush and whipped a ridiculous wrist shot over Randy Dudek in the Red net andthe Gold would be back on top by one. End of 1, 2-1 Gold.

The Beercans would take the night’s first penalty when MattElliot would go for a trip a little over halfway through the second. They wouldhold on during the penalty and then Matvey would take a feed from Sully andwould land a nice shot that put Gold up 3-1 with about 7 minutes left in thesecond.

The two goal lead was a treacherous beast for the Suds. Theywere clearly comfortable and weather it was fatigue or a slight reducing ofpressure, they would see the momentum fade from that point.

Jared Gorden, who had been threatening all night for the Redfinaly got the chance he was looking for. Working in space about 10 feet out hewould rip a great shot that would bring the game back to 1 goal with 5 minutes left in the second.

Larry would go not long after as he would check Jeff frombehind as they both went after the puck at George’s feet on the side boards.This time the Gold would threaten but Randy Dudek would stand tall for the restof the way in the Second.
One series saw Dan Herbert crashing into the crease to push home the loose puckand somehow, someway Randy held and covered and the Gold got nothing.

Sully and Daley would also have excellent chances that Randywould turn aside.

End of 2, 3-2 Suds.

The third would open with both teams pressing. It only tookone shift for the simmering battle between Larry and Mike Campbell to boilover. The two had been exchanging pleasantries all night and finaly they endedup in a tangle in the Gold end and the Zeebs sent both guys to cool off and theteams skated 5 a side.

The Gold was clearly fading as the Red was getting betterchances and Randy continued to snuff out anything the Gold got going.

The Red would hold the play in the Gold end and Mark Valentiwould work a play through Eric Bauer who worked down low in the zone. Bauerwould send a superb pass out to iJosh who was not exactly closely (or at all)covered by Jeff. iJosh would make him pay and would bury the shot by Teddy andthe game was tied.

The Red now clearly had the momentum and the game wasturning fast. Larry, now out of the box would take a nice play from Jared andNelson and would put away the go ahead goal with still 7 minutes left in thethird. Nelson and Jared had been busting it all night, and Larry was clearlydue, fueled or not by the missed chance in the penalty shot the week before. Itwas clear he was going all out to get the win. That was how it would go, andGold would not be able to get the game back from the hard working Red nine.

Reynolds and Baker would go for matching calls two minutesafter the Red goal, and really it was lucky for the Gold to get the match.Still the Suds couldn’t get much pressure until they pulled Teddy at the 130mark.

Gold had an excellent doorstep chance that had come from DHWto Jeff to Daley to everyone else crashing the net. Somehow Marc Valenti wouldhelp Randy cover the puck, (looked like Marc did the covering) and the Redescaped.

So this one would end up the opposite of the week before andyou know what that means… we’ll just have to have a rubber match. Next time.

Game stars

3^rd Jared Gorden with a goal and an assist andlots of chances all night. The Gold had to keep an eye on him (and Baker) allgame long.

2^ndRandy Dudek in net. Just a spectacular set ofsaves in the late second and mid third period for the steady netminder. Randyheld the fort and Red clearly gained momentum to come back from 2 down.

1^st Larry Bell. Captain of the Red squad andscorer of the game winner. Larry had his motor running and made hard plays allnight long. Great game.

Last Monday night saw the assembled ‘davuers face off in thesecond intra-squad game of the season. This one had a nice angle right from thestart. Management put out the request for guest captains/gms and Larry Bellstepped up to help. Larry and Jeff would have a playground-style pick ‘em overthe phone on Friday afternoon.

Larry would captain the Cads and Jeff the Suds and bothrosters filled up and both captains clearly had a philosophy in mind.

Larry would go with a heavy offensive look, snapping upmultiple scoring leaders (Nelson, Baker) and this season’s rookie phenom JoshBittker. Jeff would counter with most of the defensemen on the roster, well…most. Then to work around the possiblilty of needing Sully to play net, we madea trade and Eric Bauer would go over to Larry’s D lite Cads and Kevin Parkerand Mitch Goldenberg would come back to bolster the Gold offense.

The game started quick for the Dead in Red. Larry’soffensive philosophy would show immediate results as Greggy would bury a closechance as the play went around the zone from Josh B and Jared Gorden. This wasin the first two minutes and the Gold knew they would have to play a tightdefensive style to keep a hold on the Red.(I thought the first goal was from Baker...)
But the Gold would counter no more than 2 minutes later when Jeff would keepthe play in the zone and worked it to Matvey who did some nice work getting itto Scott Pounds who whipped a low shot from high in the circle that beat Randy,sneaking through the legs and into the net to tie the game.

Valenti would go for a trip at 10 minutes when he took Jeffdown low in the Red zone. Scott would go for a trip of his own but there was noscoring on the penalties.

The teams would go back and forth at each other and reallyboth goalies made some nice plays all game long, keeping things very tight. Thefirst would end a 1-1 draw, but the Gold felt good about the gameplan.

The Red would find that their chances would start to dwindlein the second as the Gold D would smother everything that came over the blueline and the offense was counterpunching well, getting good chances. Mike Daleywas doing his usual excellent job of pushing the play and being all over theplace. His line with Elliot and Parker would get lots of excellent chances.Mike would get results with 3 minuets left in the 2^nd when he wouldwrist home an nice play from linemates Matt and Kevin. Suds 2, Cads 1 after 2.

The Red were starting to show some frustration at not beingable to get things going but that wouldn’t last all night. With that kind oftalent they were going to make something happen eventually. Jared Gorden wouldfinish a hard work cycle from Nelson and Gregson and the game was tied at 2with 10 minutes to play.

The Gold would do a nice job counterpunching though, andonly a few minutes later Matt Elliot would feed Mike Daley who would fire agreat pass to Jeff who was camped in front of Randy and Jeff would bang it homefor the 3-2 lead.

Not long after that iJosh would go off for the Red aftertripping Jeff (who was clearly enjoying playing forward). He would slide alongthe ice like a seal…mostly to have a rest not so much to embellish…

Mike Campbell would go for the Gold before penalty was upbut there was no scoring on either.

This takes us down to the last 2 minutes. Gold up 1. Reddesperate and surging, getting chances. Larry would get a break doing a greatjob with his legs to get ahead of the D, but Mike Daley would tackle him and hewas awarded the dreaded penalty shot.
So Larry would have it in his hands to tie it up with 1:30 to play. The teamswould rise and there was plenty shouted, both pro and against his chances.Larry would take the puck and work fast into the zone favoring the right side.His move was not his best (or fastest) but he made it, but Sully was there andcame across the crease to swat away the backhand bid. Really a good try byboth.

Later in the parking lot Larry went to Sully to get someshooter’s feedback and Sully told him he dropped the shoulder so he knew he wasgoing backhand.

The game still had a minute and a half to go with bothsquads pressing hard. The Gold would get the sealer when Mark Reynolds wouldhold the play in the Red end and get the puck to Jeff who was again working themiddle of the zone. Jeff would fling it at the net and Daley would burst intothe crease area and would slam home the puck for the 4-2 lead with less than aminute to go.

That was how this one would end and the Gold locker-roomdiscussed offering the Red squad another chance at the contest and since therewas another daveur scheduled for the next Monday… it was a natural.

Before the rematch though…

Game Stars:

3^rd Star: Jeff Fosdick. 1 goal, 2 assists. Jeffhas now played 3 games in a row at forward and is looking like he likes it.Hmmm… maybe that’s some insightinto his selection of a D-heavy roster.

2^nd Star: Sully in net for the Gold. Sully waspressed into service in the nets when management was unable to book another keeper. He did a tremendous job,making great saves all night on a bunch of pretty darn good shooters.

1^st Star: Mike Daley. Doing huge amounts of workfor the Gold. Two huge goals and an assist and once again about 100km skated.Great work.

So after a Tuesday morning email to Larry…. The rematch wasset for the following Monday.

Zombies top Guns n Hoses...

3-2 Win!

This was a swap out game that the leauge bestowed on us as a result of our complaining about scheduling us for two games on the same night last Thursday. Kind of a sandwich game given that we have a BIG Schlidaveur showdown the next night... and the Guns n Hoses weren't a team we'd ever played before in my recollection.
Word coming back was that they were a very good team but our Zombie pride showed through and we gave them all they could handle.

The Gun's scored first only 3 minutes into the first but the Zombies kept after it and things settled down.
Roman Kurin scored, unassisted before the end of the first and it was tied 1-1 after one period.
The second period would be a grind the whole way until Josh Bittker would score with a helper from George and the Dead in Red were in the lead!
The Guns would come back about halfway through the third and would tie the game. But Zombie pride was not to be denied. Steve Baker would make a brilliant rush that fell just short, but Josh B would be right there to pop in the rebound and with one minute to play the Dead in Red would take the 3-2 lead and win the game. The only penalties were Larry who went for a matching call with one of the Gun's at 7 minutes into the 3rd.
Sounds like great work all the way around for the Red.

The Golden Beercans took on the Greenies from Sparta on a pre Vets-Day Thursday night in Milton to see if we can keep the roll going. These guys weren't themselves the last time we played them and it would be interesting to see if their talent returned for this rematch.
The Blogger was not in the house so we've got stories coming in from the guys that played.

iJosh: 6-2 win. 2 fights and2 ejections, one per team.

Nelson:

We won 6-2. Wecontrolled most of the game despite a number of shield-less players on theirend. Not sure why. The stat sheet never made it to us. Not sure there was one. I had a goal assisted by Josh B. Josh B. also had a pair of goals, and KevinParker had one. Scott P. said he had agoal as well, but I missed it while trying to fill out our roster. Not sure who had our sixth. Assists are anybody's guess. Larry probably has a few (no, he wasn'tthere, but has that stopped before?). Baker was tossed for fighting. Reynolds served a penalty for "being mauled". (I'm pretty sure it's in the rule book. You can check. I certainly see it called all the time.)

The Cadavers would face longtime division rival the Tigerson Monday night at Milton Academy looking to continue the recent success we’vehad against these guys lately. The Dead would wear gold as is tradition by nowagainst the Tigers. It was just a week ago that the Schlitz had their way withthese Tigers in the nightcap game at BU which wasn’t much of a contest. TheDead in Gold would also feature a nice lineup and the pregame confidence washigh.

Here’s your breakdown.

Randy Dudek in Net

D1: DWH, Bauer

D2: George, Reynolds

O1: Baker, Teddy Galante, and Matvey

O2: Daley, Elliot, and Sully

O3: Larry, Jeff and Dr. Jasse

The Tigers were not as short handed as they’ve been the lastfew times, and seemed to have a bit more fight than last week, but it was clearthat Gold should be able to control the play. Rolling 3 lines the Golden Cadswould get lots of chances and would play well the whole first period.
A tribute to their keeper, not the usual guy, the Tigers fought us to astandstill for the entire first frame. Gold would see some excellent playsthough. Sully would have at least two great chances on the doorstep andwatching him work with Daley and Elliot all night was a pleasure. Daley waswheeling and dealing and creating all kinds of space and both Sully and Mattwould get at least a handful of great chances during the game.

The first would end scoreless and there would be only onepenalty for Gold, Larry who would go for a quick wrestle with a Red defencemanwho would also go with the match.

The second saw things get going scoresheet wise when Daleywould feed Mark Reynolds at the left point and Mark would label a slapshot thatfound home and gave the Cads a 1-0 lead just 2 minutes in. Five minutes laterLarry would tie up a faceoff in the Red end. Number 26, their best player,would try to go around the net and out of the zone but Jasse met him on theother side. Mike would slap the puck away from 26 and it would squirt out rightto Jeff who was coming across the slot. Jeff would finish the play with awrister stick side and the Gold would be up 2-0.

Mark Reynolds would go for a check but there would be noblood on the penalty. The second would end 2-0 Golden Dead.

The third would see another penalty when Eric Bauer wouldgo for a trip or some other nonsense. Eric collided with a guy and they bothyard-saled and he went to the box. Again no damage on the penalty. But Reddeserves credit for continuing to mount an attack. Randy would have to scramblea few times to keep things under control around the net.

But the Gold just kept on coming. The Sullivan line finallybroke through after all their solid chances and Jim would bang home a nice playfrom DWH and Matt Elliot. I don’t know how Daley didn’t figure there as itseamed he had a million touches. He and DWH really did a nice job of puckpossession when on the ice. DWH in particular with that long stride can reallymove with it and its nice to have him back there patrolling the blue lineagain.

As things would begin to wind down Larry would take a breakout and then feather a terrific pass right onto Jeff’s stick as he came downthe slot. Jeff would rip the wrister again and this time going 5-hole would capthe night making it 4-0 good guys.

Unfortunately no 4^th period for this one asMilton is tight on the booze policy.

Game Stars

3^rd Star: DWH. Only one assist but he (like MikeDaley) covered a ton of ground and acted as a stabilizing force all the time onthe ice. Good work.

2^nd Star: Speaking of stable… Randy Dudek withthe zero and yet another solid game in the pipes. Randy has quickly become thefoundation for us in net and has settled in nicely this season with dependablequality play. Nice to see him get the shutout.

1^st Star: Self admiration society special… JeffFosdick… for two nice goals in his second game at forward in a coon’s age. Feltgreat to skate with Larry and the Good Doctor. Thanks guys.

The ride home saw a turnout at the Cavern Tavern for abeverage, a quick strum and a laugh or two with the proprietor and his highquality associates. Boulevard, Sympathy, Tornado, and the Weight… good stuff. Thanks for making the nightperfect.

Suds gnaw Tigers in Nightcap

iJosh was on duty and has this game story from the nightcap...

Welcome Back to Walter Brown Area for the back end of a 2game set this fine evening.

With many of the Cadavers cheering us on (from the lockerroom with.....um.....Gatorade, yeah Gatorade), the Schlitz manned with 12skaters would take on the undermanned Tigers.

The Schlitz would have a few iron men playing back toback games (and one Guest Blogger paying the price for it today).

The lines would adjust a few times during the game, butthe starting lines would be:

Centers: Larry Bell and Jared Gorden

Wing Pairs: Steve Baker and Dr. Pounds; iJosh and Nelson;Matt Elliott and Dan Gregson.

Defense Pairs: Capt George and Geoff Marrietta; EricBauer and Dan with Hands.

Goalie: Mark Boudreau

The Tigers have given us a run for our money in thepast. They have a few good skaters. Luckily tonight they would be too shortskaters for that to make a difference. In his first shift, Steve Baker would blast one from the top of thecircle, past the keeper to make it a quick 1-0 lead. Later in the period, Jared Gorden would takea feed from Eric Bauer and tuck it past the keeper for a 2-0 spread. Larry....being Larry, was feeling prettyjilted by the fact that he was not one of the two Golden Suds who hadscored. At one point, being irritated bythis fact, he had a word or two with an El Tigre after the whistle when theybumped a bit. Larry, however, would beput in a better mood soon when he would finally light the lamp from Dan Gregsonto make it 3-0 Beer Guys. The firstperiod would end with the Suds leading 3-0.

The second frame would see more action. A few minutesinto the period Larry Bell would draw a trip from the Tigers, setting up thepower play. The line of Nelson, iJoshand Jared would take the PP. Some goodwork in the zone would pay off as iJosh dumped off to Jared who sent it toGeoff Marrietta who fed it to iJosh for the one-time. 4-0 Schlitz. Then about 5 minutes later, Geoff Marrietta would saaaalam into theboards in the corner and get called for an interference. It came with a "Who? Me?", fromGeoff. But he would skate to the boxwithout further incident. On the PK,Eric Bauer would take a pass from Nelson and throw it at the net from a toughangle on the left side of the net. Butsomehow it found its way into the goal. 5-0 Suds on some excellent 2nd period special teams play. Now can anyone see where this is going? Yup, the OSH, Larry Bell, would have a needto get back on the scoresheet. And hewould. This time he would put one infrom George and Dr. Pounds. However theOGB, iJosh would also find the back of the net once again by picking up Jaredand Nelson's garbage to end the period with a 7 goal lead.

As the third period ended, Nelson pointed out that iJoshwas one goal away from the hat trick. Towhich iJosh replied that he tried not to think of such things. But [editoriallicense] Nelson insisted that iJosh get his 3rd before that "Damned DirtyStat Whore" did. So Nelson wouldspend the period trying to deliver the hat trick. In his efforts he gave some nifty passes, onebeauty that tipped off the stick and just wide of the net. But his efforts would aid himself as he wouldbe on the receiving end of his hard work as Larry would feed a nice pass infront of the net to Nelson who put it home with authority to bring the score to8-0. The rest of the period would seesome nice effort, but mostly the Gold trying to run out the clock. The game would end 8-0 and put an end to aSchlidaveurtastic evening where the two teams put up a total of 15 goals andgave up only 2.

Cadavers(6) vs Booze Brothers

Game one of the Tuesday double header at BU featured theDead in Red playing the newcomer Booze Brothers in what proved to be not muchof a game. The Dead were compelled to don the Gold due to the deep red of theBros. shirts. Always accommodating those Cadavers.

This one just wasn’t much of a contest as the Bros. areclearly finding their feet as a new club in the league and the Dead in Goldwould pretty much control the play from the opening drop.

Randy Dudek in Net

The game would be something of a strange experience for theBlogger. It had been a while since I’d played in a laugher… especially with uson the dominating end. We’ve been on the down side plenty of times and itsclear that the Booze Bros have some due paying still ahead of them this season.

The Golden Zombies would get on the board first about threeminutes in when Parker would put away a feed that would come from Reynolds toBittker and to him out front. Kevin would just be cracking the ice.

George would be next, assisted by Daley as he put in a niceshot that sent the Gold up 2-0 less than 2 minutes later.

Kevin would grab two more, both assisted by JoshB oncircumstances that escape me … the trouble with writing this too long after thefact.

The first would end 4-0.

Mike Daley, who was once again spending lots of time skatingwith the puck all over the place would get the next talley. This one with helpfrom iJosh and Mike would provide the slick finish. George would get another,after taking the pass from Bauer he would finish the play with I think a longshot. George had a number of rushes and nearly had his trick before the nightwas out.

Many guys got tons of good chances, it was that kind ofnight.

None moreso than the only goal scorer of the third periodJosh Bittker. TOJ/JoshB would have a handful of doorstep chances in each period itseemed. Josh is really producing in the early part of the season and looks tobe a terrific addition. He would get his goal this night on a breakaway unassisted.

This one would wind down without much fanfare.
I suppose I should mention that the Bros did score twice. Once in the secondonce in the third, but both were of really no consequence.

A nice way to kick of the back to back, a 7-2 win.

3^rd Star: A nice pair of goals for GeorgeMoorachian at the point. His contributions don’t always show on the scoresheetso its nice to see him get some glory.

2^nd Star: TOJ Josh Bittker. The dude has been a pointscoring machine and this night saw plenty of that with the weak opponent. Joshlanded the hat trick assists and a goal of his own to cap a 4 point night.Great work man.

1^st Star: Kevin Hat trick Parker. Three goals andboatload of restraint for Kevin who was all over it all night. He worked reallywell with his line and buzzed around the net taking shots or passing around asthe situation called for. Nice work.

Once again the Blogger has not been a regular attendee... so last nights game gets a great write up by Doctor Scott Pounds. Always nice to hear from the good doctor and this summary hits the spot for those of us hungry for a little game story.
So here is Doc Pounds with the recap:

The Suds went into the UMass dressing corner with five skaters (happily, Gordenbrought his friend Seth along, and the extra body was greatly appreciated. Sethgets the 'Come back anytime' award) and no goalie some fifteen minutes beforegame time, but Mark Boudreau, Baker, and Bauer came in just in time to make thegenerous NESHL 180 second warmup period.

We started with two subs. A fewminutes into the game, Ken and DWH hit the bench, so we were able to play withtwo full lines and three D (thought the lines fluctuated as Elliot was underthe weather and we seemed to be adjusting around penalties a lot).

The UMasswomen had just concluded a practice, leaving the ice very rough and rutted. TheBeermen were full of bubbles in the early going despite being initially shortand scored the first goal, Pounds to Gorden to Baker. The first period ended1-0 Adult Beverages, and the bench was full of confidence.

The Blues, however,had their very good goalie in net and had a couple of what Nelson would callhalf-shields on the bench, #8 and somebody in a Deep Blue jersey and put in thenext two goals in the second period. Then Gorden corralled a loose puck atcenter ice, deked a couple of Blues, and dished it to a streaking Herbert, whofaked the forehand and tucked the puck between the goalie's legs to make thegame 2-2.

Unfortunately, that was the high point for the 'Cans. Deep Blue and#8 had legs and the Beermen came to room temperature and went slowly flat.Though the final was 6-2, Mark Boudreau was stellar in net, robbing the Bluesat least a dozen times.

I think we forfeited the fourth period, as it was early and the campus copswere out in force due to the women's volleyball game in the gym. If anyone didstay, make it known in the comments.

The Dead in Red faced the Predators, wearing green but notlooking themselves, last night at BU looking for another Monday night win. TeamZombie posted a very nice roster of even 13 with Randy in net, but the Predshad 10 that clearly did not contain the usual level of humbling quality they’veused in the past to beat us like unwanted step children. It was going to be agood night for the Red.

It was going well from the start, but Green put on an early push that testedRandy a couple of times. We could see though that they clearly didn’t have thegame changer players (or enough of them) to be as tough as they usually are.Red got chances and continued to carry the play, between some scrambles andworked hard.

Sully would lead things off, with a nice finish off on thefeed from Josh Bittker. This would become a theme, these two, later in thegame. This came a minute in.

With about seven minutes left in the first Larry would put acap on a nice shift in the green end when he would take a play from Dr. Jasseand bang it home.

Greggy would take a slashing penalty after a solid exchangeof blows with the one, no face shield dude that they had. They both went to thebox but Greggy ended up with the extra minute and a half. Still, taking theinitial from the no face shield got him off the ice so Greggy helped us outthere.

No real trouble on the PK as the D held pretty well, theforwards forechecked hard and Reliable Randy played steady baking.
Before the period was over Josh (Bittker... we need a nickname for this guy) Sullyline was starting to show some pay off from their excellent hard work.
Jeff would hold the puck at the point and fire a low shot that was slightly wide. (The other) Josh (hmm...) would wrist it home after Sully tipped it toward the net. Nice pinball playbut OJosh (hmmm…closer) provided the finish.

The first would end 3-0 good guys. Still a little odd for aPreds game.

OJB (maybe…)_ would start the second as strong as hefinished the first and about the 10 minute mark he would take a pass from Sullyand zip up the left side of the zone. Then he unleashed a wicked wrist shotthat went top shelf, knocking off the water (and the peanut butter) and the Redwere up 4 zip. It only took about 45 seconds for JoshB (better?) to complete the hat trick. I think thisone came across the front from Sully and JoshB slammed it home. So he gets thenatural trick all assisted by Sully who I guess gets the A-trick.

To cap the run off DWH would make a few of his patented slowbut swift moves and rush the puck through the neutral zone and into the zonewhere gliding by the net he roofed a very nice wrister of his own and finishedthe unassisted score.

It was a little surreal for the blogger sitting there withexactly half the time gone in the game (8:30 second) up 6-0 on the Predators,who were clearly done, despite the two scores they’d come up with later on.

The Preds would score with 3 minutes left in the second on aplay that went around our end after a slight let down, but being up 6 will dothat to you sometimes.
Green would get one more late in the 3^rd but that was it. TeamZombie kept the blanket on the Preds, who didn’t show too much the rest of theway. We had to keep the no shield dude under surveillance but he only had a fewbig bursts in him.

Nice way to start the week. Solid all around. Good work.

3^rd Star: Doc Jasse, Larry Bell, and Dan w/Hands. All with one point. DWH and Larry with goals.

2^nd Star: Sully. Who is racking up points likethey are going out of style. An Atrick with Joshb. And a goal of his own. Greatwork all around.

1^st Star: JoshB. Josh Bittker who has literallytaken over the scoring race in the early going, nearly locking up Rookie of theyear with a mere X games played. His play has been a big boost and he’s clearlylooking like a quality acquisition…. Of course he’ll be looking for Free Agent typemoney next season but we’ll cross that bridge when we get there. Great workman. Nice to have you around.

Fourth period honors to Dr. Jasse and Marc Valenti who bothbrought tastey beverages. The crewhung for quite a while… trying to riddle out the messages in the BU dorm roomwindows… and discussing all manner of topics, drunken or otherwise. None ofwhich can quite be recalled… at least by me…

I do believe Dr. Jasse was not far off the mark when hesaid:

“Apparently our 4^th period strategy is to drinkthe number of beers matching our jersey numbers.” Always astute info from the doc… not sure we got there butwe tried. (For the record 12 and 10).

Yet another night at the rink that the blogger couldn't make. Yet another opportunity for the blog's saviour iJosh to come through with a game summary. iJosh deserves major props for helping to keep this phoney baloney enterprise running and the Blogger can't thank him enough.
Without further ado...
Here's iJosh:

Welcome back to UMalcatraz where Schiltz took on TheTripod All-Stars.

A light showing of 10 skaters would arrive with rookiegoaltender Mark Boudreau.

The lines would shape up to be:

iJosh and Dr.Pounds centered by Steve Baker The OtherJosh (Bittker) would center Matt Elliott and Dan Gregson.

Defensive Pairingswould be Dan with Hands with Mike Campbell and Geof Marietta and Eric Bauer.

Bauer was fresh off his 3 penalty night from lastweek. And after Campbell heard about the10 penalty game (as well as the roughly 100 minutes of penalties the Bruinsaccumulated vs the Hurricanes), he was in the mood for some physical play.

The first period would show some nice work by theSuds. A lot of puck possession anddecent chances. But the Tripod goaliewas not having any of it. He made somenifty saves en route to a scoreless (for him) first frame. Campbell would get the first of his penaltiesand hit the box for a few. Eric Bauerwould find his was to the box as well. Luckilyno damage was done during the penalty kills. Though the green would get acouple goal for themselves

The second would have the All-Stars start to breakthrough. The first would be give-away inthe neutral zone. The Tripod would go inall alone with a lone forward chasing him, but not close enough. He made a nice little deke and beat Mark toput the Green Team up 1-0. Not too muchlater the All-Stars would get a second goal off another defensivebreakdown. This one just bad positionand a bad change. Again, it would findthe back of the net for a 2-0 deficit. Though Campbell would decide to take a 2 minute rest again and find hisway back to the box. Again no damage andthe period would end 2-0.

The third period is a little fuzzy. The All-Stars would eventually go up3-0. And Josh Bittker would net a goalto make it 3-1. Campbell would exit thegame early in the 3rd after receiving his 3rd penalty as he tries to reclaimhis namesake award. In the end we wereunable to mount any type of a comeback. They would get one more before exiting the arena and leaving us with a4-1 loss.

Suds outlast Minus in PIM fest

Again the blogger was not around for this one so again we call on the excellent talents of one of our regular guest-bloggers iJosh. Here he is with all the sordid truth you can take.

So a rainy night in Canton would have the Golden Suds take on D-Minus.

We would welcome new goalie Mark Boudreau. He Mark would be a welcomed addition playing a solid night between the pipes.

Mark would be joined by:

Roman Kurin, Matvey and Jared Gordon on the Sitnick line.Nelson Sharfman, Kevin Parker and Matt Elliott on the 2nd line and Mike Daley, Mike Goodwin and Dan Gregson playing on the checking line. Dan with Hands and iJosh would pair up on the D. Eric Bauer would pair with Jeff Marrietta.

The game would be chippy from the start. Jeff Marrietta would go for a questionable trip, followed by Mike Daley for a matching rough. Shortly after leaving the box, Jeff would return (he missed it) for another questionable trip. That's not all. Matvey would be shown the sin bin after an ill-advised slashed. In the middle of all of this, Mike Daley was able to pick the trash (off a Gregson shot) with some hard work and put one past the goalie. This would get the D-Minus yelling about the officiating as they believed that the whistle should have been blown. At the end of one it would be 1-0 Good Guys.

The second would start with a quick whistle in front of the Suds goalkeeper. This would get the Minus grousing even more. However despite their constant griping it would not help our position with the refs as Matvey would be shown the box again. This time for a trip. After a successful kill, the Minus would even up the score with a tip in that would make its way between the pads of Mark. But Dan with Hands would put the Suds back on top.....this came with a.......wait for it.......wait for it......an assist from Roman. The 2nd would end 2-1 Schlitz.

The 3rd would be notable. But not necessarily for good reasons. Bauer would start the trend with a hook. This would be followed by a slash from Jared Gordon. Then an elbow from Bauer. Then iJosh would lose his cool briefly as he would fall to the ice pinned in the corner. The Minus player, holding his stick and yelling that iJosh had him in a leg lock (legs were wrapped around but not holding him there). iJosh got up and told the guy to STFU and gave him a push a shove and tried a take down.....over reaction? Maybe. The bitching didn't stop there as the Minus would continually chide iJosh while they both were in the box. Finally Josh told him to stop being such a "kitty cat". Okay maybe another word for kitty was used. Shortly after that Bauer would get his 3rd for unsportmanlike and get shown the door. The Suds would kill off the penalty to end the game.

So the final tally:
2 goals for.
1 goal against.
10 penalties.

Very undisciplined game. But luckily we got through. Next time we may not be so lucky.

The Blogger was not in the house for last night's game against El Tigre, but Larry Bell was and he's stopped by to deliver a very nice game summary for us here.

Scoring Summary:

1. Gordonfrom Pounds and Sharfman – nice puck relay to Jared who came down through themiddle of the slot and went top shelf over the tigers keeper. Sweet pairof hands to roof the shot from in tight.

2. Sharfmanfrom Capt George – Nelson fought for and put in a rebound of George’s shot fromthe point

3. Joshfrom LB – Josh made a nice pass from the corner to me skating into the zonefrom the bench. I whiffed on the shot, but it went right to Josh who cutacross the crease and beat the goalie.

4. Joshfrom Gordon – Jared carried the puck across the perimeter of the zone and drew3 tiger defenders then dished a pass to Josh at the goalmouth.

5. Bakerfrom LB and Sharfman – I fed Baker for a backscratcher from the point.

The best action of the night was when Marc stepped up on aTiger forward and lifted his stick as the puck came. The Tiger forwardlost control of his stick, hit Marc in the head with it and chased the puck tothe top of the circle where he unleashed a weak shot that trickled through theotherwise solid Randy. Marc went for an unsportsmanlike conduct after accostingthe ref about the non-call. Other penalties to Baker, Bauer and Bell.

Thanks very much Larry. Seems to be pretty nice to see the Tigers on the schedule these days. Hopefully this trend will continue.

Cadavers (2) vs The Booze Brothers

Alright! With the return of #1 Guest blogger iJosh to the club this winter we will be treated to some excellent game story guest blogging! iJosh played last night at UMass and filed this report with the blog early this morning. The blogger just wants to say how overjoyed he is to have iJosh helping out making quality contributions in this space. I can't possibly play and write about 'em all and his help really keeps things going.

Thanks. Now... Here's iJosh:

Welcome to the Prison by the Bay on this raw rainyevening. A perfect setting for this oneof a kind rink. They did spruce up theplace a bit and painted the once crap-brown, stone walls white. Still the same old crappy rink with parkingfees and no locker rooms. However let'snot let that bring us down there is hockey to play.

So this night the Cadavers took on the Good Ole BoozeBrothers Hockey team....from Chicago (I think). With a name like that Larry was worried that maybe they would be theodds on favorite to win the 4th period. But we can cover that later. TheBooze Brothers would don crimson, league issued jerseys. So the Dead in Red would sport the yellowwith the Schlitz logo. I see a themebrewing.

The game would start with Roman centering Matvey and Dr.Pounds. Larry would sit in the middlebetween iJosh and KMitch. And MattElliott, Gregson and new comer Theodore Galante. The defense would feature Mike Daley, GeoffMarietta. Both Dan with Hands Hebert andMarc Valenti made their return to the ice. Randy Dudek would sit between the pipes.

The game started with the Russian Crew of Roman, Matveyand Dr. "Zhivago" Pounds. Withless than one minute elapsed on the clock a deflected puck would make its wayinto the back of the net behind Randy putting the Cads in a quick 1-0hole. Definitely not the way to startthe night. The next shift of Larry,iJosh and Mitch would quickly even up the score with a pass from iJosh up tothe point. Valenti would send the puckto the net. Larry would pick up therebound and put it home. 1-1. Roman, never one to let himself slack in thescoring race, would net one from DWH at the 11 minutes mark to put the Dead up2-1. Next shift saw Larry put anotherone home. This time from iJosh in theslot. 3-1 Cads. Then Dan with Hands in open ice tried to beat the goalie highand whiffed a bit on the shot only to have it in trickle far side right, justpast the goalies skate. And the firstwould end with the Cadavers holding a 4 to 1 lead.

The Cads had spent much of the 1st period controlling thepuck and play. Randy was getting alittle bored back in the defensive zone. However the Cads, specifically Mike Daley, had no plans to make hisnight any more exciting. So Daley wouldspend much of the 2nd period trying to explain to us how Kaberle should havebeen able to help the Bruins offense last season. Thankfully for both the Cadavers, Daleypulled it off (and thankfully for the Bruins, Kaberle didn't keep them fromwinning). Mike on the rush took a passfrom Larry and shot it past the Booze keeper for a now 5-1 advantage. But Daley would get in alone again and tuckit behind the goalie again 2 minutes later to make it 6-1.

So the Dead go into the 3rd with a comfy 6-1 lead. Randy would finally get to see some action asthe Booze Brothers were able to beat him on a little breakaway to cut theirdeficit to 4 goals. iJosh would get backon the score sheet with a backhand putback of Daley's shot to get back thegoal. But a deflection from a Cads defenderoff a hard shot would find itself top shelf behind Randy to Make it 7-3. Mr. Valenti would cap off the evening fromGregson to make it an 8-3 win.

All in all not a bad game. A few defensive lapses, but that wasn'treally until garbage time. Randy wasn'treally tested much. And only let in onegoal off an opposing players stick.

Despite Larry's pregame worries, there were Bud LightLimes, Bud Light and Molson Canadians to be had in the misty parking lot. No Booze Brothers to be found except for ashort conversation before they bolted for the car. So with that a complete wire to wire victoryfor the Dead in the Schlitz logo.

New-look Suds romp El Tigre!

Schlitz (2) vs Tigers

The Golden Beercans faced old friend El Tigre last night inCanton for the second game of the Winter season. This was a short noticeaffair, with the league only getting the schedule up late Friday… however theSuds answered the call and while we only had 9… at least we had 9. Better yet,it was apparently the right 9 to get the job done as the Suds basically tookthe Tigers apart piece by piece, picking the body bare by the end of the night.

We haven’t seen the Tigers since early in the Summer when wewere racking up wins against the lower D division (that sounded weird) teams. This night was similar. TheNew-Look Suds were not to be messed with and hung a good one on the guys in Redonce we got going.

Here’s your breakdown:

Randy (on the spot) Dudek in Net

O1: Baker, Jared, and Josh Bittker

O2: Sully, Parker, and Nelson

The first few shifts, every one got situated, and the latearrivals made their way out to the bench during the opening minutes. It wasclear from the start we would be in pretty good shape with a decent effortagainst these guys. Their Captain (8 with pants) wasn’t around and it lookedlike they were light a forward or two.

The Gold didn’t get around to making things happen untillater in the period. Josh Bittker would go for a trip at the 5 minute mark. Thepenalty passed without trouble and then Kevin Parker would put the first onehome for the Gold, the assist coming… are you ready… from Steve Baker. This waswith just under 2 minutes.

End one, 1-0 Schlitz.

The Cans would waste no time at all pouring it on as thesecond opened. Sully would open the period with the first of several scoringplays of the night. Working from Josh B, to Nelson back over to Sully he wouldpress to the net and working the 2 on 1 with Nelson took what the Keeper gavehim (low left side) and scored for the 2-0 lead.

Baker would be next, just 2 minutes later, when he wouldtake the play from Josh B, to Jared then to Steve who popped it home and justlike that it was 3-0. Jared was all over the place in a lot of ways, histerrific hands and smooth stride just seems to help so much controlling theplay. He had a great night, but only made the scoresheet on this goal.

Nelson would be next as he would take the return favor passfrom Sully and with 13 minutes left in the 2^nd we were up 4-0. Thatline of Sully, Nelson and Parker really did some great grind it out work in theoffensive zone all night long.

In fact some of that work came just a minute later whenSully would again score on a nice bang-bang play from Nelson and it was 5-0.
Parker would take a seat a few minutes later after a meeting with number 25 inthe slot. No trouble with the pk though and that line was back at it againsoon.

Sully would land his hat trick goal from Kevin and Nelson at4:30 remaining and at this point Sully had enough scoring that the blogger hascompletely lost track of how they all went down.

The Tigers would show that they wouldn’t go withoutsomething said on their behalf and would score twice in the last 2 and a halfminutes of the period. We were clearly letting off the accelerator and theyturned it pretty quick when we went soft.

So after 2 periods, things looked pretty “Tip Top” (creditDr.Jasse).. and really… how many 5 goal periods have we ever had? Good stuff.It was also noted post game by Nelson there haven’t been many times that by themiddle of the second we know the game is finished.

The third would be no surprises either.

They would take a penalty. We would take 2 more. Bauer againfor an elbow… punk… and George for and interference late in the game. Georgewas due that one as he had just pushed over 25 in the neutral zone not longbefore… it was a clean open ice push down and the guy had a hard time gettingup… and for some reason the blogger thought this was hilarious. I was tired…anyway… There also haven’t been many times we’ve had 5 penalties on the nightand won decisively.

Sully would score again just a few minutes in on that powerplay. The play was sick from George (stat whore assist) and Nelson just workedlow and zipped an excellent pass to Sully out front. The dude had all thefinish required on the night.

Parker would put the cap on the night in garbage time (9minutes remaining) from Nelson and Sully. That line, those three guys, endedthe evening with a jaw dropping 14 points. Nice work indeed.

So there you have it. The New Look Suds are a hit, andthanks to playing the Cads (ahem) and El Tigre are 2-0 to open the season. Ofcourse we blew this over the summer going 5-0 and getting hammered in a higherdivision the rest of the season. Who cares. Winning is good. More games withthe Tigers.

3^rd Star: Randy on the spot Dudek. Helping outthe club on short notice and turning in some fine work in the pipes. Verysteady… and becoming a fixture back there.

2^nd Star: How do you not go with Nelson Sharfman?The cagey vet works the zone, works hard all night and ends up with fivepoints. A goal and 4 assists.

Have to also mention Kevin Parker here as part of theprogram with 2 goals and an assist. Great work gentlemen.

1^st Star: You can see it a mile away… JimSullivan. A slow evening with 4 goals and 2 assists and a whopper of a 6 pointnight. Great work. Last week he was clutch playing net for the ‘daveur and thisweek he’s an offensive machine… great stuff Sully.

Honorable Mention: Josh Bittker. A strong early push for rookie of the year with another 2 points in his second game. Nice to have you aboard!

No fourth period joy. Everyone seemed pleased to take this sweet one and roll. Maybe it was the fact that there was no water (showers) due to an Ecoli situation in the Canton water. We play there next week... keep it in mind... and next time lets bring beer.

The winter 2012 season kicked off Monday night at BostonUniversity’s Walter Brown Arena with a Seasonopendaveur featuring a bunch ofnew and old faces among the Gold and Red. Management was very happy to be ableto field two squads again this season after a trimmed down Summer season. Greatto have another Schlidaveur really… these games are one of the best features ofthe two team setup.

The teams broke out hastily just hours before the game ended up being a littleof the new guys versus the old guys.
The Schlitz would feature three new skaters, all free agent pickups signed inthe offseason. Jared Gorden came over from the Sitniks and was a force atcenter all night long. Geoff Marietta, a Mike Daley connection played D for thegold, and Josh Bittker, from the Mass Skaters waiver wire, played forward. Allthree looked like solid players that will certainly help us out, we welcome youall aboard.

The game tone was set by the New Look Suds immediately. Winning the openingface off and streaking right up ice Jared Gorden walked through Campbell andFosdick and right to the net where he laid one in for the lead. Just like that,15 seconds in and it looked like it was going to be a long night for the “oldguys” in Red.

Things settled right down after that but it was clear theRed would have to keep a close eye on Jared all night and really the Gold did agood job keeping the Red off balance and only occasionally productive.

The first would turn into a grind as the teams settled in,both goalies would get going and were making nice stops. Campbell would go fora trip for Red, and Mark Reynolds would go for a check for Gold before theperiod was out but no blood on the penalties.

It took until halfway through the second period for Gold toscore again. This time Dan Gregson would finish up the work on a shot/pass fromiJosh and popping the rebound under Sully (defensemen no where to be seen) theGold were up 2-0.

This is roughly when the new look Suds took over the game. Atthe start of the third period Josh Bittker, playing the right side, would scoreunassisted, after some nice work in the offensive zone. This was less than aminute in and things were getting harder for the Dead in Red.

As the grind went on, Mike Capmbell would be called for aminor assault at 12:35. As the ensuing power play wound down, Josh Bittkerwould assist Mike Daley who would score on a nice play and with 11 minutes leftit was 4-0 Gold.

Then the play got more and more contentious as the Reddesperation level rose as they just tried to get on the board. George would gofor the Gold on a hook but there was no scoring on the power play for Red.

The Bittker-Daley combo would work again with 3 minutes leftas Daley would land his second goal of the night. His success was well deservedas he had a great night, wheeling and dealing on offense and doing his usualsolid job of covering the entire ice sheet.

The Gold would get called on a retalliation again and thistime Geoff Marietta would get a High Stick call and the Red would have one lastchance.

Larry would make good on the chance… but it was all EricBauer who afterward, quite deservedly said “I’m taking credit for that.” Bauermade a nice play at the top of the zone with the puck and then sent a greatshot through traffic that deflected off of Larry’s stick and into the net. Thiswas the only time all night that Red could solve Randy Dudek who got better asthe game went on. He’s turned into a nice solid option in the pipes for us, andhis work has been well appreciated.

That was how this one would end. 6-1 with the New Look Sudson top.

Big welcomes to Josh Bittker, Geoff Marietta, and JaredGorden who all look to be quality pick ups by management.

Game Stars

3^rd Star: Randy Dudek. Another very niceperformance in the pipes snuffing out everything that got close to him. Nicejob.

2^nd Star: Josh Bittker. Early candidate forRookie of the Year, Josh jumped right in and started producing, looking very athome as Daley’s winger. He wasable to rack up a goal and 2 assists in his franchise debut.

1^st Star: Mike Mr. Everywhere Daley. Only twogoals on the night, neither of which I can really remember all that well, butthis is chiefly because I was probably just beaten badly by Mr. Daley or ateammate on his way to the net. Great work as always formed the backbone of the Gold attack.

Honorable Mention: Jared Gorden. Especially given hisimpressive game opening goal, Jared looks like he is going to be a force toreckon with.

Fourth period goodness provided by Eric Bauer and MattElliot.

Nice to see a big Post-Daveur group hanging out in the BUparking lot. Feels good to be back.

Welcome back also needs to be said to a few returning players that it was great to see again.

Mark Reynolds showed he hasn't accumulated any rust over the summer.

iJosh Greenstein was also a frisky competitor holding the line very well at his D position. Nice to see him... and Superfan Heather after the game.

Final Summer Stats

Here are the final statistics from the Summer 2011 campaign.
A loss in the Championship game wasn't so bad to take and it dropped us to 8-8-3 on the season which seemed about right.
After a 5-0 blistering start we then went 9 weeks without a W and really the run we made at the end saved the .500 season.
Good numbers here in particular we have to start with Steve Baker who finishes first in points (14) and first in penalties (8) for the Stat whore's dream double championship. Nice work Steve.
Jim Sullivan finishes second with 13 points on a nice comeback year for him. Nice to have him out there on the forward lines making things happen.
Rounding out the top five are Larry and Jeff (11) and Mike Daley (10) all of whom turned in nice performances over the summer. Good work boys.

As mentioned before the Mike Campbell Award goes to Baker. Eric Bauer was close behind Steve with 7 penalties but couldn't get over the top. It should be noted that the Namesake of the award had 6 penalties but this was only in 8 games played so his Pen Per Game number dwarfs the two guys ahead of him on the list. Just sayin'...

Clearly we've had a changing of the guard in the Nets this summer. Jon Cole who was an excellent find last winter continued his solid work playing about half of our games this summer. A 3.37 GAA is certainly acceptable for a D league hockey team.
Interesting that Jon's replacement Randy Dudek finished with a similar 3.60 GAA after playing 5 games with us.
We only saw last Winter's playoff star Jacob Marks once and he did win, and we'd love to see more of Jacob... if only he lived closer.

The Dead in Red took to the sheet at the Boch Ice Palace inDedham last night, not only later than scheduled, but incredibly playing forthe division championship despite a less than sparkly 8-7-3 overall record. The3 seed Cadavers would take on the always difficult SLJ. These guys are allaround good with a few standouts as well. They wore a black version of the oldPhoenix Coyotes jersey and it should have been an omen that the Blogger caughteven before the game began.

Team Zombie was enthusiastic despite the delayed start time.Not jumping up and down mind you… but the potty training discussion had anexpectant edge to it during the pregame locker room. As Doc Pounds said not that long ago… “Didn’t we used totalk about hot chicks?” Now… peeing. Sigh.

Anyway… if we were going to win this one it would take awhole bunch of what we brought with us to last week’s game against the Blues.Some scoring, hard shifting, and great overall team play. We got some of thatstuff but whatever we did get only lasted so long. I’ll tell you what we didget, and was another terrific performance in net from Jay McNamara who has turned outto be quite a find. Hope we much more of him going forward this winter.

It was clear we had our hands full from the open. Very fastpace and it was all we could do to play them even up and down the ice. Its niceto report that not only were we holding our own in the first 5 minutes but wealso generated a few scoring chances.

Just after the 12 minute mark the play would go around theattacking zone due to some excellent work by the Daley, Baker, Elliot line.Mike Daley would zip a pass out to Baker who was open about 15 feet out. Steveripped a famous slapper that went top shelf and the good guys were up 1-0. Goodstuff.

The SLJ (they need a snappy knickname) didn’t take kindly tobeing down a goal and a whole minute of playing time later they bing bangboomed a great play that left the Red spinning and the game tied at 1.

Things still looked pretty good for the puffing Cads,including two penalties that went our way, but there were no breakthroughs andreally we kind of chugged into the first intermission tied.

The Second would see much more of the same grind. I’m happyto say that the Red momentum would continue. No more than 2 minutes in MikeDaley, after an exhausting shift would come to the bench as the play went intoour end… not ideal but Mike had to get off… and Sully jumped over the boards.The play was already coming back up the ice and Sully would pick up the loosepuck in the neutral zone and charge into the Black end. Jim made a nice moveshaking the D and then buried his bid and the Zombies were up a goal again.

Of course, once again SLJ would take all of one exact minuteof playing time to put together a play in our end and tie the game at 2. Aftera few more shifts the game went by the midway point, 8 minutes in the secondand we were still in a tie game for the trophy.
Pretty good… the Bloggerthinks… all you can ask for the last game of the year really. Just wanted toget that in, given that the momentum was fading, and even though we were in it,the feeling that the game was quickly slipping away would be in full effect bythe end of the frame.

At 7 minutes the SLJ would pot another one to take theirfirst lead. Baker would go for a trip after taking down one of their speedstersin a play he had no choice on. Red stood strong on the PK but at the 2 minutemark they would land another one and the period would end 4-2. The fourth was acheepey… shot along the “baseline” that slipped through a narrow space.

Team Zombie had the heart but not the legs to make itthrough the third let alone mount a comeback. Black would turn up the heat ,like all good teams looking to finish and would score at 14 minutes and againat 12. Red was just hanging on forthe ride at this point but the shifts stayed short and the effort was there foreveryone, despite the fact that we couldn’t get anything going.
Sully had another almost breakaway in the third but the defenseman knocked himoff his balance and he couldn’t finish the play. There was good work all theway around and really Jay kept it close by making lots of quality stops as theperiod wore on.

Matvey would tackle a guy coming out of our end at the 5minute mark and we would play down most of the rest of the way. SLJ would landone last parting shot with one minute left, just to let us know they had thisone wrapped up.

So that was how this one would end up. No joy. A good skate,a lot of Zombie Pride in effort and desire. It just wasn’t going to happen.

We even gave them a run in the 4^th period.Sporting 5 coolers we stood out in the warm humid air and sipped a salve to oursorrows. Of course they weren’t f-ing around here either and soon they had ahuge cooler hemmoraging beers and a grill going on the back of one of theirpickups. The oversized trophy sitting on the edge of the group, closest to us Inoticed, a reminder of what they’d done.

It wasn’t easy to take as it became clear they were going to outlast us in thelot, five coolers or not.

Doc Pounds told Jeff to “let it go” as the victoriousscent of Cheeseburgers wafted over our consolation gathering as he mutteredcurses under his breath, sidelong glancing at the trophy… or maybe the burgers.

Night over. 4^th period lost. Game lost. TheSummer of mediocrity appropriately wrapped up with a 8-8-3 overall record.

Playoff Showdown with Les Blues

5-2 WIN!

The Dead in Red took the ice at storied Walter Brown Arena against long time rival The Blues for a semi-final playoff match up. The two teams skated to a 1-1 draw not long ago and the familiarity between the squads meant this game was sure to be close as well. We have a long history of battles with the guys in Blue and everyone on Team Zombie was anxious to get the win and knock those guys out of the "tournament".
Here's how things would work out.
First off the Blogger wants to thank the rowdy members of the Betley Lab for setting Jeff's night off on the right foot. Thanks go out to The Mexican Tom Cruise and his special Fresca enhanced Margaritas and Dave Harris for his booming pep-talk toast that got the blood flowing. Suffice to say Jeff was well lubricated before he made it across the river to BU.
That was fine as he was slated as the 14th man on a full roster and apparently it suited him fine as he got early results when the puck dropped.

But first... lets have the lineups.

It was clear that the Blues had their regulars as well as the talent they've picked up in the last few seasons. In particular number 6 a forward with black and green socks, and number 43 wearing a dark blue league jersey would clearly need minding all night as they were able to make plays with their legs and hands at any time.
The Blogger is happy to report that the energy level was great on the Cadaver bench and Red took the game right at the Blues right from the start. No hard to do with the lineup we had. The Baker-Daley experience would get shots immediately and it was clear Baker was into it from the start. Funny... for the first time he was seen with beer in hand in the pregame locker room. When asked he told the team he wasn't missing out on the Shipyard Pumpkin Head ale this year like last. "I went back to the store and it was all gone!" Apparently he stocked up and has been drinking nothing else all week.
We waded into the game and there was plenty of give and take between the sides to get things warmed right up in a hurry. Mike Campbell would barrel through someone less than four minutes in and Blue would go on the power play. Red fought hard and played well on the PK and just as it ended good things started to happen.
Jeff would make a outlet pass to Doc Pounds up on the left side. Jeff had a head of steam and was hollering to the good Doctor to send it back. He did just that and laid a perfect pass across the blue line right to Jeff as he turned the crossed up defender and streaked to the net to bury a shot over the keepers far shoulder. Red up 1-0 and Jeff banging his stick on the ice on his way back.
Campbell would go again to the box for his second penalty of the night on an iffy call that no one seemed to see. Suddenly the extra defender was looking good as chances were Mike wasn't going to make the whole game (3 penalties and you are out). Again, good work by Red on the PK meant the Blues got not much going and the first would end 1-0.
The Second would open with more good things for the Cads. Kevin Parker would headman the puck up to Steve Baker who would make a nice play to Matt Elliot who was parked on the right side of the crease. Matty would score from the short side on a fast shot and the good guys had a 2 goal lead. Couple of things here... nice to see Matt score in the playoffs as he had a very productive regular season, and also there couldn't have been a better time for high scorer Steve Baker to pick up his FIRST assist of the year. Now how you score 12 goals with no assists the Blogger doesn't know... or care. Now hes got at least one helper and those are just as good.
About halfway through the period Parker and a Blue would go for matching roughing calls and the teams played 5 on 5. Other than that the period was a full on grind and the Red never let up. After 2... 2-0 good guys.
Now you know it couldn't be easy. You know we couldn't go the whole night without some drama and anxious times... right? Of course. Five minutes into the third period the Blues would start to get thier momentum going. The play went around the Red end and we started to scramble. If not for the very steady hand of Jay McNamara in net the lead would have been gone in a flash. Instead the Blues kept knocking on the door and Jay kept turning them aside. That is... until this happened. Jeff would try to take down number 43 who was winding up and driving to the net. The ref's arm went up as he hauled him down but the puck went to a Blue behind our net who passed to a guy right in front and he put it past Jay to cut the lead to one. No penalty after the goal saved Jeff a trip to the box... but the Red bench was already on edge.
Another 5 minutes of playing time, a lot of it with Red on their heels went by. Then Mike Daley would make a great play. The puck would come up from Mike Campbell then to Elliot in the neutral zone. He would spring Daley with a nice pass and Mike was off on a breakaway to the Blue net. Daley's shot was wicked and the Red bench cheered when the puck went in giving us back a two goal lead, now with 7 minutes left in the game.
Blue was desperate. Six and 43 were all over the place trying to make something happen. It was only a minute after Daley's goal that they did just that. Another scramble in our end and the loose puck ended up with 43 who rifled one into the net to cut the lead back to 1, 3-2, now with 5 and a half minutes left.
Another minute of tense playing time later a strange play gave great results. George tried a clearing pass to Doc Pounds that missed the mark but hit the Good Doctor off the helmet and bounced back to George. The ranging defense man then barreled up ice hell bent for glory and he found it, burying the puck for a nice finish and some insurance.
Now with time winding down and the Blues in full desperation they would pull their keeper in the final minute and Red would do a good job squashing the play. Roman would hustle down and grab a loose clearing play and would pot the empty netter for the nail in the coffin.
Great work by all the Cadavers and a very sweet win.

This means we advance to the Division Championship Game next week. Stay tuned... its always exciting to play for hardware.

Really... everyone played really well. There was great energy and focus on the bench and this one was a nice victory to have against a well know... and ill regarded... opponent.

Playoff Fever Thursday Night!

The Cads are in the playoffs and by virtue of a 7-7-3 finish, 3rd place in the Coyote Division. This gets us a match up with the Blues (2 seed) on Thursday night.
A win and we'll advance to the "championship" game for the division against the remaining team.
We played the Blues very tight last week and provided there are no ringers in play it should be another tremendous game.

So. See you Thursday night. Win or go home.

The Dead in Red faced old time rival the Blues last night inCanton for the last game of the summer regular season with, amazingly, a chanceto secure a winning record. Team Zombie would turn in their best period of workin a season or more but would still let the prize slip away in the waningmoments as momentum faded and the game got late.

The Blues have had a solid group for some time and it wouldbe a good matchup as the Zombies sported a strong lineup for the season closer.

Randy Dudek was back in net, and really has been a nice findduring the last ¼ of this season and he’s turned in some fine work helping tokeep the Cads competitive, and last night was no different.

The Defensive corps were supplemented by newcomer GeoffMarietta who the organization has been scouting for a spot on the winterroster. Contract negotiations have been ongoing but very positive for Mariettawho despite some rust on his wheels have a very solid evening on the blue line.Look for him to make the winter club…

The offensive pace was set by Larry, Daley and Baker whoalternated at center and kept the tempo brisk as the Dead played a very strongfirst period. Sully and Nelson hadmultiple chances as well and the passing and hustle was the best its been forthe dead in some time.

The Cads really took the game right at the Blues for thatwhole first frame making smart hard plays that generated good things all overthe place. The Blue goalie did a great job keeping rebounds down and smotheringthe many plays that ended up at his feet.

There was nice work from the D making strong outlets andpinching occasionally and that was how the ice would be broken midway throughthe period. Mike Campbell would push the play up into the attack zone afterpicking up a loose puck in the neutral zone then with a back and forth to SteveBaker in the slot ended up with a great chance that Steve would eventually chipover the sprawling keeper for the 1-0 lead.

Steve was excited, as he’d already had a run in with CaptainDouchebag, no. 3 Kevin Feury from the Blues. Feury had blatantly held Steve’sstick earlier in the play and the two had exchanged pleasantries (and hacks) back upthe ice.
Fuery is no stranger to douchebaggery and last night he tangled frequently withSteve and any other forward that came near usually felt his stick or shoulder.You have to watch your back with that prick on the ice.

The first would end with the Red holding good momentum andthe precious one goal lead, but things would become more heated in the second.

About 5 minutes in, Mike Daley would get caught up with adefender and despite taking most of the abuse in the exchange Mike would go tothe box for a rough. The Red would play well enough to escape the penalty butas the time wound down Geoff Marietta and a Blue defender would go for matchingroughs as the two wrestled in the Blue crease.
Again no blood on the penalty, and when Daley returned the teams were even.Unfortunately Red wasn’t done sending guys to the box and this time Larry wouldgo for a hook with 6 minutes remaining in the period.

The play had been slowing from the fast paced first periodand the Red was slowly loosing the traction they had built in the beginningafter killing all the penalties. The Blues were slowly but steadily turning themomentum as the game got later and the second would close with the Cads stillclinging to the one goal lead.

Well… there you have it. A one goal lead going into thefinal period of the regular season. A winning record on the line if we can pullout the W. I’m glad to say that the Dead did open the period strong and quicklygot a couple chances. The Blues would counter punch however and the Red wasclearly playing a bit more conservatively trying to keep the game under theircollective thumb.

Matvey would take down a rushing Blue forward and would goto the box for the trip only 3 minutes in. Team Zombie would stomp out thepenalty though with great work by Daley and Nelson as the blogger recalls.Still… you can see it coming… right?

Baker and no.3 Feury would reacquaint themselves in the highslot and this exchange ended up with Feury chopping away at Steve who got backup and in his face only to get clouted a few times by the true D-bag. The refswould send them both to the box, which of course sent Steve apoplectic. LuckilySteve kept his yapping to only ¾ volume or something but the Zeebs didn’t tosshim and finally after throwing a bucket of water (I wish) on him he settleddown. These matching penalties came at 8:30.
The play came down to the wire, and if you are frequent reader of this spaceyou may see what is coming about a mile and a half away.

The Blues were pressing the play and as Red backpedaled andplayed more shut down, they started to get better chances.

With the game under 3 mintues the Blues center man with thegreen socks, number 16 Russel Jewel would force the play into the Red end.Campbell made a play on him but he slipped away. Then he worked Jeff over andplunged into the zone as Jeff couldn’t shake the puck from him. He sent a pass down low to the streaking wingwho made a couple of good hacks as Randy made the first stop but the puck endedup in the net and the game tied at 2:27 remaining.

This took a considerable amount of wind out of the Zombiessails as you can imagine, but the Red kept fighting until the end. Baker endedup with an open field tackle (better than the Pats punt coverage) and went backto the box with 1:35 remaining.
The Red would stand strong in the closing minute and would manage to salvagethe tie. Despite the dissapointment of letting the W slip away it really was awell matched and fairly well played game. Conincidentally we will almostcertainly see the Blues in playoff round one so this is a matchup we will berevisiting within two weeks time.

On another note, Steve’s running mouth couldn’t find ahandle on the reigns and he spent several minutes chatting up the Zeebs outsidetheir room. Jeff headed over 2 -3 times in the early going… trying to save thefranchise from some unwanted attention… but the Zeebs seemed to be cool andwaved him off the 2^nd and 3^rd visit as they were “justtalking” which I think was code for “letting Steve get it all out in hopes thatChrist Almighty he might just SHUT UP.”

Steve has played a very strong summer and hasn’t let histemper and mouth get him into many scrapes but he really needs to just let itgo sometimes. The reality is that there will always be inconsistancys and blowncalls at this level.
His best and most helpful response is when he kicks it into gear like he didfor shifts in the first and third where he was everywhere at once. The otherteam has their hands full whenever he plays with anger and puts all his effortinto making a play and not runnig his mouth.

Anyway. Beerman honor roll for Dr.s Campbell, Daley and Bellwho supplied some chilly refreshment after the game.
Campbell said it all when dropping the tailgate of his truck declared “I thinkthis my favorite bar”.

Well. 7-7-3 for the Summer. Not bad given a 9 game winlessstreak… but not stellar given a 5 game winning streak.

On to the playoffs.

3-0 Win!

The Dead in Red made it back to some winning ways on Thursday night as they took on division opponent the CH Terriers. Nice to see Team Zombie make something happen in the W collumn again.
The Blogger was out of town so this one will be a bare bones rundown.

This didn't stop Sully from scoring what was rumored to be a nifty goal a minute later.

Randy had another great game making good stops all night.
In the second Baker(might have been George) and Bauer went for penalties but no blood.

Gregson would score from Nelson to put the Dead up 2-0 after 2.

Baker would finish the game with an empty netter and the game would end 3-0.

Great job. Wish I had more to go on... but there you have it.

Golden Zombies break the streak!

The dead in Red... actually yellow thanks to playing the red-backed shellfish... stumbled into Dedham last night like a weary leigonier dragging himself into a desert oasis, desperate for a drink from the cool fountain of victory, our lips parched from the blistering passage of a 9 game winless streak. Its been since June 16th, a night we put the hurt on an undermanned CH Terriers squad, since we'd had our itching thirst slaked. Long overdue, and thankfully the Lobsters provided us with a golden opportunity last night. They were thin on players and only had a few that could really compete, from early on it was clear they were very beatable.
Of course, if you've stopped by here more than 2 or 3 times, you'll know it wasn't all that easy, even against a weaker opponent for us to shake our losing ways.
The Dead in Gold had nearly a full boat with 12 and Randy Dudek in the pipes for his third appearance. Here's your breakdown.

The pregame locker room had plenty of good optimism. Nice to see iJosh make a return, its been too long since he's laced 'em up with us. Matt Elliot agreed to play D with Jeff, actually talked himself into the job as it was revealed that he'd had quite a number of CL smoothies during pregame and apparently "was up for anything". He also made some slurred remarks about being "dangerous". Jeff was glad for his enthusiasm and agreed to the D pairing right away.

The first period was kind of frustrating. It was clear early on that we could out skate and out play these guys but somehow it wasn't translating into dominant play. In fact we looked like we didn't know exactly what to do with ourselves for half the time. 7 Minuets in the Lobsters would jump on a loose puck to Randy's left and thump it off him and the post into the net for the 1-0 lead. Worse than that one of their capable skaters made a nice play after a good pass and unleashed a strong shot that beat Randy for the 2-0 lead in the closing moments of the period.

So there we were, intermission number 1 and down 2 goals to a weak team. Looking down the barrel of 9 winless games (7 losses, 2 ties) over the last two months. I'm glad to report, that when it was gut check time, Zombie Pride made a comeback.

The Dead in Gold took to it and finally started to make some things happen. Jeff Fosdick led the way on D as he started to push things up ice at every opportunity.
A couple of minutes in he pressed the play up to Larry on the right. Larry gained the zone and made a nice pass back to Jeff who was crashing the net. Jeff took a couple of hacks at it, the keeper let it slip out from under and then Jeff flipped it into the net for the first Zombie score of the night.
The blogger gushes with pride to report that Jeff wasn't even close to being done. A few shifts later as the Gold continued to build momentum and keep things in the Lobster end, Jeff would intercept a clearing pass at the top of the zone. He grabbed the end over end flip with his left glove, plopped it down in front of him and whipped it in to Jim Sullivan who was streaking to the net. Sully took the pass and banged it home for the game tying talley. Nice work on the finish by Sully there.

Other notable items in the second were a handful of stops by Randy and a curious play with Baker and Roman that saw Baker hesitating at the blue line putting Roman off side. The blogger thought this was hilarious. Baker just Romaned... Roman. The period would end with the teams deadlocked at 2.

The Gold continued to roll as the third opened. Jeff again figured in the play as he pushed up ice into the neutral zone. There he led Steve Baker with a pass at the blue line. Baker slipped into the zone, and as the D backed off of him he pulled up and released the hounds in the form of a lasershow slapper that the Red keep had no chance on. Bang. Good guys up 3-2.
Good things continued to happen as everyone got it in gear and made some plays. The forwards were doing a nice job getting things going and keeping the play in the Lobster end when possible. We were a long way from anything like "polished" or "dominating" but it looked good at times.
Baker would strike again, this time from George who made a nice play to Steve. Baker would provide the nice finish again with a wicked shot that put the Gold up 4-2 with less than 5 minutes left in the game.
Now... The Gold could certainly taste it, but as stated earlier, we don't like to make anything easier on ourselves. So there was the standard chase it around out own zone for a couple of the final minutes. This led to a goal with less than 2 minutes left and the score was 4-3.
Regardless, Team Zombie was able to grind this one out, snuffing out any offense the Shellfish could muster in the closing moments. Felt good.

Game Stars (whoa... its been a long time) 3rd Star: Larry. A nice assist and a lot of hard work all night long. Good solid game.

2nd Star: Pair of goals for Steve Baker and some very nice all around play. Steve has had a great summer working hard and making plays. Good job.

1st Star: The Blogger blushes... but since he was given free license by Larry in the postgame locker room... awards 1st star to hard working Jeff Fosdick. An all effort 1st goal to get things going and then 2 key helpers to keep it going for the Zombies. Nice work big fella. This 3 point outburst puts Jeff among the team leaders with 10 points on the season(tied with Larry and Baker), only 1 back from Jim Sullivan who has 11.

Honorable Mentions:
iJosh for carrying the mail on a regular D shift with George all night. Nice to see you out there dude.
Matt Elliot gets the Mike Campbell drunken defenseman award for surviving the night. Only a few spills but in general Matt played great.
Randy Dudek for hanging with us. He went from blowout loss his first game, to a hard fought tie in his second, to a nice win in his third. Careful dude... we may want to keep you.

4th Period Beerman Honor Roll for Larry Bell who brought a deliciously marinated selection of Limeys in a cooler. Nice to hang with Larry, Ken, iJosh, and George after the game. Been too long since the 4th period followed a nice come from behind win.

Now... not to get too far ahead of ourselves... we stand now 6-7-2 with 2 games remaining over the next 2 Thursday nights. The CH Terriers next week and the Blues the week after. If we can figure out a way to pull these games off we could still finish over .500.

3-3 tie

Thursday night at BU gave the Dead in Red another chance to break the current winless streak that has started to dominate this season. The Tripod Allstars stood in the way of our getting back into the W column and wore a mish mash of different green jerseys.
They had a couple of guys that needed watching, a pair of half shields and the dude in the kelly green league shirt who could be trouble. Otherwise we were a pretty even match for these guys and this night’s opportunity was as good as we could have hoped for.
Randy Dudek manned the pipes for the Red, his return representing something like courage or masochism after he got torched the night of the Shock game a week back.
Randy had shown some flashes in the early periods of that game and brought a great attitude and solid hard work to the crease Thursday night at BU and we were glad to have him. Here is how the rest of the roster broke down.

The early going of this one didn’t look great for the Red who seemed to struggle a bit getting their game into gear. The Green did a good job pressing the play when they could, and the Red kind of scrambled for footing in the first 10 minutes. Randy did a nice job on a handful of strong chances and kept us in the early play.
Wish I could tell you otherwise, but the word that kept coming to mind while watching from the bench was... SLOW. That didn’t bode well if we were going to get over on the green Tripods.
The Green would break the ice first after potting a nice play past Randy who didn’t have much help, trust me, I had a great view of it as the guy went right by me… At the end of 1 the good guys were down 1-0.

The second period didn’t really get much better. The Green still spent more time in our end than we did in theirs. They would score again, about 5 minutes in. This time one of the half shields broke around Steve, after colliding with him, and ripped a sick wrist shot that went top shelf over the keeper.
The momentum would keep sliding away from the Dead as the clock went under 7 minutes the Tripods would land yet another one, on another high wrist shot and the game was now 3-0. Gulp. Again, I hate to admit it the feeling on the bench was not exactly one of brimming confidence.

One guy had had enough though. One guy felt the Zombie Pride bubble and stir and none other than Steve Baker would pull Parker out of the face off dot and switched with him, taking the center spot and single handed he would change the tide of the game. Steve won the face off, and playing with palpable anger and effort, pushed the play into the green end. The play went through the D men, and Steve found himself in the crease and on the doorstep where he chopped at his own short rebound and buried the puck to put the Dead on the board and back in the game.
The last few minutes of the period would see the Red at least with a pulse thanks to Bakers resuscitation, but the frame would close with the guys down 3-1... but at least we were alive.

The third would be a grind, as you who read these pages know it usually is. The game was clearly contested again and the sides had plenty of “give and take” with every loose puck. Parker would draw a penalty from the kelly green shirted number 3, a blatant cross check behind the play. Even after the call he had something to say to Kevin about the “checking” nature of the league. Whatever the delusion he sat and the Red shuffled through the power play with no real progress other than more time spent in the offensive zone. Almost as the first penalty expired Matvey would tangle with a Green forward and the two would end up on the ice then in the box with a pair of matching minors.

The teams played 5 on 5 and then the momentum shift became more dramatic when again, one of the Cads took the game on his shoulders and made something happen.

This time it was Jim Sullivan, playing center who would provide the jump. Sully would pick up an outlet/ loose puck just outside our blue line and pressed the play up ice with vigor. He swung around the D on the left then drove across the goal line, shedding defenders on the way, to the crease where he slipped the puck under the sprawling Green keeper and finally went to the ice himself after a bunch of contact in front. Jim came back up ice covered in snow and to a Red bench that was a lot happier and more engaged than earlier in the game.

I’m glad to say at this point that the Zombie revival was not done. As the time now ticked down to the final 5 minutes the Red would continue to get chances despite Green clearly trying to scramble and take the momentum back. Team Zombie kept it coming.
Sully would figure in again as he started another play up through the neutral zone. He swung it wide to Matt Elliot on the right wing who carried it into the zone drawing a guy toward him. Matt then threaded a absolute beauty of a pass back to the high crease where Roman Kurin was streaking. Roman took the pass and flicked it 5 hole past the moving keeper to tie the game. It was a really terrific bang bang play from Elliot to Roman with the nice finish. Just like the the game was tied and the clock was below the 3 minute mark.

I wish I could tell you the story had an even better finish, that the Red found a way to get one more tally in the closing moments to pull out the improbable comeback, but I can’t. You and I, friend reader, will have to be happy with the fact that the Red squelched any and everything that the Green tried to get going in those closing moments, and even turned in a few more shots in anger that at least had the potential to give us the W. You have to admit, coming back from 3-0 on a night when for half the game it looked like we just didn’t have it, will just have to be good enough. A tie is better than an L, and we’ve had too many of those lately, so we’ll take it.

Kudos have to go out to Baker for the paddle board jump start that got things going. They also go out to Sully for the great rush and goal, and to Roman for the most excellent finish on the game tieing goal. Randy deserves a mention here as well, he did a great job all night snuffing out chances. Great work all the way around.

The early game time left an opportunity for a nice 4th period gathering in the BU parking lot. Despite the BUPD cruiser idling 60 yards away, many cold beverages were enjoyed by those that stayed after.

Big props to Dr. Micheal Jasse and Kevin Parker for providing the ice cold goodness that fueled the stories and laughs under the full moon and flickering streetlights in the warm evening. Bauer, Elliot, Parker, Jasse and Fosdick lingered. It had been too long since number 12 joined us not only on the ice but for the postgame.

It was noted at some point that the 4th is declared an automatic win whenever you see the guys from the following game walking to their cars to go. So it was last night.

The cruiser moved on, to the relief of the lingerers, and the evening would end with a better feeling than it started with. Sometimes its enough not to lose, and to have those beers, laughs and stories in the warm moonlight. Thanks guys.

Dead in Gold battle the Rats!

3-1 Loss

The dead in Red hit the Ice in Canton last night as the Dead in Yellow, with new and old faces trying to bust up this miserable streak that the team has been on since the early part of the summer. Newcomer Jay McNamara was manning the pipes for the first time for the Dead and he did a fine job in his first appearance. Jon Carey (brought by his Dad Brian) was home on leave from the Marines and he skated a reunion shift with the forwards for the night. Likewise it was nice to see Eric Snow on the blueline again as he made only his second game for the Cads. Here’s how the roster shook out.

The opponent for the night was the River Rats, a club we’ve seen before but very rarely. They usually play in a division one or two above us, and after the debacle last week against the Shock, there was a bit of trepidation in the room about the prospects of being badly outclassed on the ice. The blogger is glad to tell you that this wasn’t quite the case, and the situation was certainly made much better given that the Rats acted with a lot more class and sportsmanship than the F*ckbag Shock.
They were better than us. No question. They had two guys, no face sheild number 6 and blue helmet 18 that were a full step or two above the talent level we are used to. It was clear from early on we’d have to keep a sharp eye on both of those guys whenever they were on the ice.
I’m also glad to report that the Dead in Gold looked at the task at hand and dug right in and played hard matching the Rats intensity and keeping a dull shine on Zombie pride preventing anything from getting out of hand.
The Red forwards did a nice job backchecking, and the D was pretty well shutdown all night. Great play by Steve Baker all night helped anchor that D unit and he must have had 30 stops/breakups over the course of the game. Bauer and Snow worked pretty well together and the Gold limited the Red to short cycles in our end.

More good news. Jay McNamara is a nice find. Kudos from management go to George Moorachian for digging this guy up. He’s got game and shut down the Rat’s big guns a number of times in the first and third. The ‘davuers look forward to seeing him back in the nets sometime soon.

The first period would see a few scrambles in our end but in general the Gold did a nice job reacting to the Rats speed and snuffed out everything they brought. Its notable that the first time the blogger remembered a good hard shot on the red keeper was at about 4 minutes remaining in that period. It would end a 0-0 draw and the Gold clearly had a moral victory at that score.

Really the only bad section of the game for the Cadavers was the beginning of the second period. The Rats would turn on the juice and land a bang bang pass and shoot goal just 15 seconds in. The goal was set up by the speedy number 18 who had serious wheels when he wanted to open it up. They plunked another one in less than a minute later and there was clearly a sinking feeling on the Gold bench. They would hand semi tough though and get their legs back, only to let another one in at the 1130 mark and the game was 3-0, but that was as far as the bleeding would go that period.

The Gold would get the next one on a nice play by Sully and Daley. Mike led the play in the zone 2 on 1 and threaded a beauty of a pass to Sully who ripped a good shot by the Red keeper to make it 3-1. That seemed to buoy the Gold hopes and they seemed to play a bit harder after that.

Each team would take a penalty. In our case Matvey went for a trip with about 4 minutes left in the second. No scoring on either the kill or the power play and the period would end 3-1.

The third would be a grind all the way. The Rats were clearly looking to bust it open but thanks to great plays by both Jay in Net and Baker on the blueline the Gold held them without a score in the final frame. Of course we didn’t generate much offense and didn’t make any ground back on the 2 goal lead. Still it was again a bit of a moral victory just to play to a draw in two of the three periods.

It was all around a very good skate and a nice competitive game that had none of the nonsense from the blowout the week before. A tip of the cap to the Rats for that.
Honorable mentions go out to Mike Daley who played his usual very solid game covering lots of ice with each shift. Sully also looks to be becoming more of himself and showing the occasional flash. Nice to see greybeard vet Kevin Parker out there grinding it up with the offense too.

Management would be remiss not to thank Jon Carey for not just coming out last night, but all for his service to our country. Jon looked really well, and certainly added some muscle (and a new tatoo) over the last few months. Stay safe Jon. It was great to see you and remember you can play with us anytime.

Also nice to see his Dad who seems to be on the mend from shoulder surgery. It will be nice to have him back this winter.

That’s how that one went. The last bit of good news I’ve got for you is that we won the all important 4th period thanks to nice chilly collection of beers brought by Eric Bauer. There was good conversation to go with the beer and a laugh or two in the Canton lot before we called it a night.

Cadavers(12) vs Shock

0-11 loss (yup… that’s right)

The Dead in Red showed up in Dedham last night looking to stay over 500 (5-5-1) and faced the Shock, a group we hadn’t seen for a few months. The Shock were sporting their slick new jerseys, Reebok NHL style with a great new logo, a lightning bolt zapping a skeleton. Schlidaveur management immediately had thoughts of copyright infringement but the lighting bolt was clearly a central part of the logo… so the team lawyers advised against it.

The Shock have a bunch of Mooks that we’ve seen before in a bunch of different configurations, but clearly they have a healthy amount of talent on the roster. Baker commented to Jeff pregame that they had a bunch of really good guys. Baker’s words would be prophetic and it wasn’t long before we found out just how good they were.
Jeff has also decided he may not want to remind the scorekeeper to write down the times of the goals… the scorekeep, Charlie did just as he asked… too bad there were no goals written on the Cadaver side of the sheet.

Nelson floated between lines.

Well… it took almost no time at all for the Shock to show their class and ability as the their large fat defenseman, number 77, a blockhead named Chris Baron found his way to the box after tripping one of the Cads. Of course he had plenty to say on the way and was clearly just getting his stupid into gear. He would go again only a couple of minutes later when he and Bauer tangled down low in the offensive zone. Bauer came across and Baron planted him with a total crosscheck takedown. Again he had plenty to say along the lines of “slash me again and see what happens’ and more eloquent brilliance as he went to the box. Apparently someone had the gaul to make contact with him. It was difficult not to as A. he takes up so much space, and B he can’t move his fatness very fast one way or the other. He would be only emboldened however as his teammates would be soon to show the flash and ability they had.

The Shock would get on the board when number 24, their no face shield wearing D would get it going and start to take us apart. First he would take the puck at the blue line and turn Jeff like a carousel and flip one past the keeper for the 1-0 lead. A pair of shifts later he would take a loose puck and slide into the slot and unleash a laser that beat Randy cold.

Number 24, Sean Curran was another genius on the Shock and he seemed to be all lathered up to put a hurt on the Red, because apparently we tried to play hard against them, even though we clearly were a step below in talent. Sean is a great player. He’s fortunate that he’s still in his youth, ( I guess mid-late twenties) and the extra weight he carries hasn’t hurt him much yet. He can turn it on whenever he wants and dominate, and coast the rest of the time and have the game well in hand.
Give him another 10 years and he wont be able to move as well when he needs it and will probably turn into a maladjusted pathetic version of the player he could have been who takes a lot of frustrated penalties and doesn’t do much for his team, except add to the class they show on the ice of course.

However that will be down the road, and last night he and the rest of the Shock had more than enough to put a serious hurt on the very pathetic looking Cadavers. It was 3-0 at the end of the first and the Cads were pretty clear on the fact that they’d be fortunate if they could hold them to only 3 a period.
The second would see the Shock land another 3 exactly and their bench was still whooping with the goals up until the 5th, because again, apparently we had the nerve to try against them, as futile as that was. Baker would go for a trip, and Bauer for a slash during the second. I think only one of their 3 goals in that period was on the PP.
6-0 after 2. Baker was melting down by the end of the period and had to be hosed off between periods due to some stupid disagreement with one of the refs. Thankfully he pulled it together and didn’t get himself ejected.

The Shock would keep afer it, and continued to show their class, as they landed two goals in the first 3 minutes of the 3rd. They would send a guy to the box for a slash but the Red had nothing on the PP. The Shock would land another 3 goals, all a bit shakey in the last 5 minutes as the Red clearly had had enough and were ready to be done.

There would be one more classy move on the Shock’s part. Number 10, Derek Phillipon would blatantly cross check Bauer from behind in our own slot in an epic cheap shot with less than a minute left on the clock. Like I said… classy. Nothing like beating a team 11-0 and then taking cheap hacks at them as time winds down. Curran and Baron (24 and 77) had all kinds of things to say during the handshakes too showing true sportsmanship and class all the way.

All I can say is, there may be a chance at redemption somewhere down the road. Douchbaggery begets douchbaggery and really… that’s no way for us to go. Our only option against a team that much better than us is to shut up, play hard and try to socre a goal. Last night wasn’t a horror show, but it sure was embarrasing.

The only bright spoot was beer from Dr. Pounds and Larry Minivan Bell. Ice cold Limeys to sooth the sting and burn of the beating we just took. Thanks guys.

Cads and Dogs play to a tie.

3-3 Tie

The Cadavers hit Thursday night’s game in Hingham with a 5 game losing streak and a need to get back in the win column against the Terriers, a team we’ve matched up with decently over the last few meetings. The Dead in Red had a scramble finding a keeper, now that Jon Cole has headed off into the sunset, but management was able to ink Teddy Locke at the last minute to come by and man the pipes.

The game would start with a delay of game penalty as the Terriers keeper was late arriving. The first really only got underway at the 12 minute mark.
Depending on the lineup, and as always, who shows up for them, we’ve played the Terriers fairly even of late, and the 1st was largely a stand off with no scoring.

The Terriers would take the first penalty but no action on the power play for Red. With the period winding down the Cads would get turned around in their own end and would leave number 2 alone to bury one past Teddy for the 1-0 lead. That was how the first would end.
Unfortunatley the Terriers would continue their momentum and would score the next one only a couple of minutes into the second. Now down 2-0 the Zombies would have to dig deep to get back into the game. I’m glad to say they did just that.

The next goal would be from the Dead in Red. After some good work in the offensive zone Dan Gregson Sully would pop home a rebound from a Greggy shot and it was back to a one goal game. The Second would grind on with good chances at both ends as the Red started to turn the momentum back their way. Teddy was also digging in and was making solid stops, and even flashing the glove and blocker when needed. He gave us all we could have asked for.

The period would wind down and the Red was working hard to make something happen. When you say working hard, the first name you ought to be thinking is Nelson Sharfman, and you’d be right, as he led the play into the zone as the seconds ran low. He fought off a defender, swinging wide and got the shot off that hit the keeper. The puck dropped down and he wasn’t covering it when Jeff Fosdick rushed in from higher in the zone, and not hearing a whistle pushed at the puck under the keeper and it squirted into the net to tie the game as time expired.

After the game Jeff was heard saying to the local media: “ I wanted to crash the net, just like Nelson always does. He’s kind of my inspiration. You know, shows you how its done. He was down there and made a good play, I figured I owed it to him to finish hard.” The veteran Sharfman left without comment to the press.

Unfortuneately the third didn’t get off to the start the Dead were hoping. Just a couple shifts in a strange play in our end saw the forward’s shot glance off George’s skate and deflect into the net by Teddy who couldn’t snag the misdirected shot. The Dead clearly still had some work to do, but there were good signs as they conintued to get good chances. The forwards all did a nice job of passing and getting chances on offense. The teams would trade penalties. First the Terriers, then the Cads when Mike Campbell would go for a trip as he knocked over one of the speedy forwards. 99 had been giving us trouble all night but there was no blood on either penalty.

The blogger had a great view of what happened next. Jeff would back check in our zone and hacking at a forward he would knock both the puck and his stick loose. He then grabbed his stick off the ice and spun around with the play and the loose puck was close by floating near Dr. Pounds. The Doc tapped it to Jeff who now had momentum after a couple of strides. Jeff would proceed up the ice and would shake a forward on the way. Then, defying the eyes, and all laws of inertia, Jeff actually made a move (something that looked like a cow shifting its weight) and split the defenders. He would rip a wrist shot as he closed in on the goal and it would find the twine behind the keeper high glove side. The game was tied and Jeff tried out his Ray Bourque fist pump on the way back. He was also gracious enough to recreate the goal with the media members postgame lining up people to be players in the Hingham conference room. Ok maybe that didn’t happen… but the goal was awesome.

The rest of the 3rd would be a muck and grind. Major kudos are due for the guys that kept getting good shots on offense. Sully, Nelson, Roman, and Baker would all have excellent chances that we just couldn’t slip past the Terrier keeper. Teddy also made a pair of absolutley aweseome saves down the stretch. Going one side to the other he dove across the crease to snuff the first and picked one clean with his glove on the second when the white forward was less than 5 feet away. Teddy really deserves a ton of credit for keeping us in the match.

Alas.. that was how this one would go down. No further scoring and the game would end 3-3 and the Cadvers would still be .500 on the season.

More kudos need to be given to Mr. Campbell for bringing the Limeys and for hanging out in the parking lot. A good handfull of chaps stuck around to enjoy the summer apres skate, which always seems to go well in the Hingham lot.
A nod also here to Greggy... who came up big with a little lighter he shared with his teammates.

Jeff and Mike hung out as the team went home one by one and somehow the night brought back memories of other nights and times the two have had, and how long that time has actually been. Thanks again Mike, it was great just to talk for a while.

No game stars, but no shame in hanging tough and coming back to … not lose.
Good job to everyone who came out and thanks again to Teddy.

The Dead in Red tried to stop a 4 game skid going into this one against occasional opponent SLJ but just couldn't stop the momentum of the downward turn this season has seemed to take.
The blogger was not on hand for this one but got sufficient... if brief... feedback on how things went.
For the first time we'd have a crowded bench going over the full mark by 1 to make 14 skaters. It also was the LAST time we'd see good guy Jon Cole in the pipes as he was due to ship out to Nevada by the end of the week, leaving us more than lacking in the goalie department.

Heres your roster breakdown.

Its true that the level of competition has certainly gone up a few notches since our early run. Nelson warned management about winning too many games early and ending up someplace we didn't really want to be.
So the Dead in Red slide to 500... looking to turn things back to the right track next week against the CH Terriers.

The Dead in Red faced the talented Spartans in Green last night in Hingham in a late evening game for a chance to put a stop to the recent 3 game skid. The streak comes after the great success in the early going that saw the team open 5 and 0. That seems like a long time ago now, and the Spartans would be a tough match up (given our recent train wreck beating at their hands) to “get off the schnide”.
The Cads had a full 13 slated and a nice group of players, even with Nelson and Bauer showing fashionably late for the puck drop. The team was once again haunted by missing equipment troubles as Mitch discovered he was short 1 shinny.
This realization had a funny reveal as while he was explaining his situation to Capt. George there was a short ebb in the conversation. Mitch was heard to say “I’ve got the big one.” as he knocked twice on his cup. Of course we knew he was talking about his most important piece of equipment… wait… never mind.
So we lost a skater in the pregame again (last time it was Scott) and went to war with 12 after the late arrivals made it to the bench. Mitch didn’t seem too troubled… this just meant he could have a little longer ride home in his new Mustang. (sweet ride dude)

The Spartans are clearly and experienced and talented group but I’m happy to report that the Red played up to the task most of the night and kept the game close. The first period would see action at both ends, both keepers doing a solid job in the early going.
It was clear that the Red would have to keep a close eye on a few guys, number 20 in particular had ridiculous wheels and they had no trouble getting odd man or breakaway chances from time to time.
Larry would go for a trip as he hauled a streaking forward down on his way to Jon at just under 9 minutes. After a line change and faceoff to Jon’s right the Spartans made a nice series of passes and a shot that put them up 1-0. Jeff looked up to see Mitch shaking his head slowly behind the end board glass then turned to D partner Campbell who said “Wait… we were shorthanded?”. That’s kind of how that one went.
Unfortunately a fumbled line change would lead to a breakaway for Green and they would score on the chance to go up 2-0 with about 2 and half minutes left. The good news was only that Red continued to stick with it and didn’t lose it completely before the period break.

The Second period would see a revival by the hard working Zombie crew. Led by strong efforts all the way around. The forwards did nice work cycling in the Green end and D did a solid job snuffing out Green chances in the neutral zone before they got cooking.
Some of that hard work would pay off about 5 minuets into the frame when Larry would send a play to Matvey who would bury the chance and cut the Green lead in half.

Campbell would go a minute or two later for a mild molestation of a forward that was free wheeling in the zone. No blood on the PK though this time.
Mr. Campbell would make up for his penalty on the next shift he made the ice. Mike would take the puck in our end and barreling up ice would make a nice rush into the zone and let go a shot. Nelson, doing his typical muck and grind routine in front would bang home the rebound from the shot and the game was tied. No question Zombie pride was in effect and the Red got a little jump being back in the game.
Unfortunately before the end of the period Green would strike back on a long shot that kind of ham-strung Jon and sneaked in under him and the second would end with Team Zombie behind by a goal again.
The third would see a pair of penalties for Green in the first 6-7 minutes but the Cads couldn’t seem to get the offense into high gear. The Spartans were doing a good job all night squashing things before they made it to their keeper.
Baker’s scouting report on the keeper was deadly accurate… if only we all had the wrist shots to take advantage…
Under 5 minutes Bauer would go in a matching penalty situation after tangling with his Green counterpart. The Zombies would pull Jon in the final minute and a half, and would get a pair of good chances as they were able to hold it pretty well in the Green end. Despite the chances this one would end up a hard fought one goal loss against a pretty good team.

The fourth period would be sponsored by Eric Bauer and the Harpoon sampler… and its always a pleasant hang in the Hingham lot in the Summer, a full moon through thin clouds above.

So the season opening 5-0 has now been followed by 0-4 and the team heads towards 500. Next up will be SLJ (no slouches) next week at BU.

Ouch. This one sounded like it stung a bit. Early reports were grim... and don't look to be getting any better. So without further ado... here is a nice handfull of Guest Bloggers to tell us all about how the deal went down last night on Babcock street.

First tale out of the gate was grim. Here's Larry with a few words:
We got smoked 5 or 6-0.
We left Jon out to dry on several breakaways, 2-on-0's and other odd-man rushes and nice easy rebound goals in the slot. Worst of all, they only had 7 skaters to our 13 and we couldn't wear them down.
I skated with the russians, sully-elliot-gregson, baker-pounds-mitch.

Thanks very much Larry. Here is Eric Bauer with a short summary:

Wasn't pretty. 6 nothing. Their best skater floated around our blue line looking for outlet passes the whole night. We started to take a bit of our aggression out on him.

Daley brought his family and we got a rousing rendition of how the B's won the cup (apparently game 7 was last night).

Small showing for the 4th period, but Bell, Moorachian, Gregson and Bauer finished strong.

Thanks Eric. At least we made some showing in the fourth...

Here is another good summary from Mitch Goldenberg who added some more definition to last nights beat down:

We got crushed, something like 6-0 (I lost count). We started out with 12 guys (later rounded out to an even 13) vs their 6 (which later became 7) and I noted to Scott that we'd lost to shorter benches before. Seconds later, they scored on the first shift of the game, and then added another pretty quickly after that. 1st period ended down 3-0. We didn't test their goalie much, and they constantly had one or two guys cherry picking which led to way too many odd-man rushes. The game got a little chippy towards the end, with the highlight (for me) being Baker's arguing a penalty call because it was "a clean hit" (it was). The ref asked if he was aware that it was a non-checking league. One of those games...

I asked him if he knew how many penalties we got and he responded:
Mostly matching minors. I (personally) think the refs did a decent job to keep the game from getting ugly. We were shorthanded a couple of times, and as usual played some of our best hockey of the night while down a man.
We had some fans in the stands (so there MIGHT be a picture or two) but we were down so quickly that they really didn't have much of a game to cheer for/want to remember.

Annnnnd Here is Capt. George with a nice thorough breakdown of the action:

We lost: 6-0 shellacking.

Within the first few minutes we were down 2-0, and before the end of the 1st we were down 3-0. The Blues only had 7 skaters. But, apparently it was their best 7, and what I would call representative of a typical D league team. If they got behind our D, it was almost an automatic goal. And they got behind us an aweful lot, and had plenty of odd man rushes.

We weren't much of a threat in the offensive zone. So, that allowed their speedy snipers to cherry pick all night. We gave them no reason to help in their own defensive zone. I think it was a moral victory to hold the Blues to one goal in 2nd period. But, it just doesn't matter when you're shut out. The only way for us to get on the score sheet was to get

penalties: 7 minor penalties. I'm sure that didn't help our anemic offensive showing. You would think with a full bench of 13 skaters we would have been able to tire them out after a while. It didn't look like the slowed down at all.

Those of us that stuck around for the 4th period, closing up shop around 10:00 PM, declared victory and dubbed ourselves the co-1st stars of the game: Larry, Eric, Gregson, George. 2nd star to Mattie E. for participating in the 4th, but leaving early on, not going the distance.

Yeeesh. Thanks for the excellent breakdown George. Too bad about that game though...
A quick look at the scoresheet that George submitted shows the following penalties:

Larry and Sully both for holds in the first.
Baker for a cross-check in the second.
Bauer and Matvey for Roughs, Baker for a check and George for a trip in the 3rd.

At least we lit up the scoresheet... not in a good way... but we'll take what we can get.

The Dead in Red faced the South of Boston League Rangers (looking a whole lot like the CH Terriers) in Hingham on Friday night for what turned out to be a grinding tough skate and competitive but disappointing game.
The Cads featured a pair of call ups from the secondary roster given that half the roster was at a wedding and the rest apparently have a life... unlike the 10 of us that showed up on Friday night at the Hingham rink. To add to the reunion feel Lizzy DeFlurin was handling the score keeping duties. Nice to see her, and Mark Reynolds and Teddy Locke who both played D and provided a nice boost.
Scott pounds seemed to have left the house without his pants… and without comment as to weather that is regular behavior for the good Doc on a Friday night... it didn’t work so well for us as he couldn’t go. We missed him but went with the 9 we had.

The “Rangers” looked a lot like members of the Ch Terriers and Tigers as there were several familiar faces. They featured a few half shields with wheels, some big D, a speedy and very pesky female forward and a big guy with soft hands that cherry picked half the night.
They were clearly experienced, steady and relentless. We had our hands more than full, even with the addition of Teddy on the blue line. He did a sold job all night covering a ton of ground and steadying the play when needed in our end.
Jon Cole needs a mention here too. He played very well, making bunches of great stops on their tricky shooters.
The play was even but daunting for most of the first. The Rangers would finally crack the ice just under the 5 remaining. The big guy who was often cheating up behind our D finally got a pass and Jeff was no where close enough to make a play on him as he walked in solo and buried a wicked shot by Jon.
The killer was that they would score again with only 30 seconds in the period after a long scramble in our own end. That was a big shot to the hopes for the Red.
The Second played as a total grind. Trying to control their chances and creating a few of our own. The forwards pushed the puck well at times, the line of Sully, Nelson and Jasse was doing hard work all over and making nice passes but nothing was quite coming together for any of them.

The Baker, Daley Matvey likewise created some nice chances but nothing came together. Daley did his usual ton of skating and had a solid night trying to make things happen. Steve deserves some credit for the way he played as the frustration and tension mounted in the final period. It went 5 minutes into the 3rd 2-0 badguys and we were really pressing to get something. Steve took some abuse in front of the net and the guy yapped at him after the play. Steve not only kept his cool, (and his hands off the guy), but then on the restart of play he drew a penalty from the guy, taking a trip and gaining the Red the only power play of the night.
The Red would not have a great PP however and didn’t score.

Baker would then would pick up a puck in the offensive zone and doing the “spinarama” shot backhand through traffic and scored to get the Red on the board. (unassisted).
Unfortunately that would be the only highlight of the night other than Jon’s occasional stellar work to keep us within shouting distance of the game.

A tough, but hard fought 2-1 loss for a Friday night treat. This would complete the sweep fo the week after we lost the night before in Dedham to the Spartans.
So much for the undefeated dream season… 5-2.

4th period honors for Jasse, Mark, Daley and Jeff who enjoyed the ambiance of the Hingham parking lot for the rest of the evening. Not bad for a Friday night and warm enough.

The Cads put the 5-0 streak on the line with a late night matchup with the Spartans (Green) in Dedham last night. Lets just say that the Green Team brought their horses and the season opening streak was ended at 5. A hearty 11 skated for the Dead in Red but it wasn’t enough to get over on the powerful Spartans.

The Blogger was not in attendance but this word came back via the grapevine to let us know how the deal went down.
First up is Nelson Sharfman:

Nice goal by Sully.
Larry got one by cleaning up the trash in front.

The game didn't really get away from us until the later stages but they had the first two goals and led (at times comfortably) from wire to wire. They had some of their better skaters with them. Now that we are out of the "assessment" period of the schedule the ringers on all the teams should start to reappear.

Not too much to report here. They were a better team than us (though probably not 6-2 better).
They made some nice plays and their goalie made some nice saves. We should have scored more. John wanted a couple back. Just another night at the ballpark.

Thanks very much Nelson. We got another take from Larry Bell who rounded out the picture a little more. Here’s Larry:

1st loss of the season. It was pretty close in the first two periods but they managed to put 3 by Jon and their goalie came up pretty big. We mixed up the lines and tried to mount a comeback in the 3rd, with Sully scoring from Matvey to make it 3-1.
Then a series of defensive breakdowns (breakaways, 3-on-1s) led to then scoring 3 more in the third. I also scored from Campbell, but too little, too late. Penalties to Baker and Campbell Cheers LB

Too bad about the streak going down, but really, we weren’t going to go 16-0 or anything.

The Dead in Red continued their summer season roll out with a strong win over the undermanned CH Terriers in Canton last night. The Terriers had 6 and the Cadavers brought double that and a good effort that turned the game into a rout in the early going.
Here is your Zombie lineup.
Chris “beat the spam filter” Colman in Net

Wings: Greggy, Sully, Matvey, Roman, and Scott

The game would start shaky despite the obvious advantage of numbers the Cads had. The first fifteen seconds saw the Terriers win the opening face off, proceed untouched into the zone and then a pass and a shot later would go up 1-0. The clock said 16:46. What?

That would be the entire night’s highlights for the Little Dogs. The Dead in Red would take the play right back to them and the puck would literally stay in the White end for the next several shifts.

It wasn’t’ until just under 12 minutes that the Zombies would tie it up. Larry, working with the Russian connection Roman and Matvey (both assisted) would tie the game after hard work in front.

Again the play would stay in the offensive zone and at 7:42 Greggy would pick up a long rebound from some nice work that Sully and Larry (both assisted) were doing down low slamming the puck past the diving and desperate keeper and the Cads would have their first lead of the night. Greggy pointed out that this would indeed stand up as the game winner…

The roll was just getting going as only two minutes later the puck would go from Scott to Nelson to Bauer who would finish nicely and it was now 3-1.

Bauer was clearly feeling it and just another 2 minutes later he would feed Baker who would unleash one into the twine and the rout was in full effect.

Before the close of the period Mike “wheels” Daley would press the play down low and as the rebound squeeked out to the short side Sully would roof a back hander that found the top of the net, “top shelf, where Momma keeps the Peanut butter” and it was 5-1 in the closing seconds.

Red would clearly dial it back a notch or two as the Terriers were clearly out of gas and hope and, similar to the team in Vancouver, just hoping the whole thing would hurry up and get overwith.
It was less than 8 minutes left when the puck would come out to the point on an errant clear, Jeff would pick it up and launch a slapper that beat the keeper low in the corner as he slid across. No celebration… but it did feel good.
A mere minute and a half later Roman would thread a beauty of a pass… wait did I just write that?... yes.. Roman threaded a beauty to Baker on the doorstep and it was now 7-1. Mike Daley would get his on a nice rush from our zone through the combined rosters on the ice and while showing pass to the streaking forward instead buried a sick shot between the keeper and post for a cozy 7 goal lead.

The only other thing of note in this period was Larry putting Roman deliberately off sides as he waited, waited, and then waited some more for the Russian to pass the puck up to him. Instead Roman weaved in and out and never really looked at Larry waiting on the blue line, so Larry just skated in as Roman continued to dance down the line then looked up surprised when the ref blew the play offside. The bench roared in laughter.

Oh yes… the other thing was George with a spat in front of our keeper that landed him in the box for roughing. He and that particular guy were exchanging pleasantries all night. Never let it be said that George lets up his intensity… 7 goal lead be dammed…

Larry would then decide to switch shirts and would skate the third period with white, but to little effect.

Baker would get one more, again from Daley and that’s how this one would end 9-1. The period ticked away and the Terriers would get a handful of decent chances that Chris Colman would snuff out.

That was it, and the Zombies would find themselves riding a 5-0 season opening streak that must be unprecedented in franchise history. Records is checking on that… just don’t hold your breath for an answer.

Game Stars

3^rd Star: Eric “I’ve got plenty of beer” Bauer. A nice goal and assist on the night and better yet a strong sponsorship of the 4^th period. Thanks Eric.

2^nd Star: Steve “didn’t even need to say anything” Baker. The hat trick and some nice moves all night. Great work all the way… plus not once did he even say a thing to the refs.

1^st Star: Mike “I just want the workout” Daley with a goal and two assists and once again a 10k work of ice covered in the game. Dude is tireless and his goal late in the second was really sweet.

Honorable mentions:

Sully with a goal and an assist and another step in his comeback to form.

Larry also with a goal and assist and a good sport move playing for the gassed Terriers in the third to give them a hand. (It was probably self serving but I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt)

Roman for a pair of assists both great passes and then the high comedy of the Larry play. Sometime changing ingrained behavior is hard… but we love you Roman.

Lastly Chris Colman for answering the call for a keeper. Chris was smart enough to email Jeff directly when he didn’t hear back. Turns out Jeff's email spam filter had weeded out all the goalie list responses… glad it worked out. Thanks for playing a good game Chris.

Well... I know hearing from me a couple weeks ago was probably a surprise given I've been away so long... ok I'm sure you still didn't notice... especially now that you are so popular, and deservedly so.

I'm back again, and I won't keep you long as I know you've got a big game tonight, but that's why I'm writing again. You pulled off that epic game 7 against the Lighting that time and now after another incredible series of games chock full of some of the best hockey I've watched in a long time you are there again. Except this time its for all the marbles. The whole enchilada.

The Cup will be skated around that building in Vancouver tonight and I guess the reason I'm writing (again) is that I really hope that the guy carrying it is wearing Black and Gold.You got me. I'm back pulling for you and hoping and anticipating tonight's tilt like it really means something to me. I honestly haven't felt this way since I was a kid. I haven't cared this much since Cam Neely was scoring goals on one leg showing he was the toughest guy in the world, and Ray Bourque was showing every night what it meant to be a sportsman and competitor. Now Cam is upstairs wearing a suit, Ray is grey and showing sportsmanship on the golf course (and has a ring on his mantle that doesn't have a B on it) and I'm not that skinny kid on the couch jumping up and down when you scored and crying when you lost.

I haven't hated anybody the way I do the Vancouver roster, scum bags like Burrows, LaPierre, Torres, and that total D-bag Luongo since guys like Ulf Samulson, and Claude "The Rat" Lemieux skated against you. Maybe Vancouver's unlikability has helped draw me back to your side... it doesn't matter now.

The thing is I'm really in for tonight. I hate to admit to myself that after a long time of saying how much I don't care, I do. Its going to hurt like hell if you lose tonight, but if you win... well that's going to really be something.

I've got my own skinny kid to jump up and down on the couch for me when you score tonight. Im going to let him stay up late to see that special moment that will happen at the end of the game.

You know the one, where the Captain is handed that massive silver cup and holds it over his head. The smile on that guy’s face is pretty much the top of the mountain in sports as far as I can tell. No happier smile in the world.

I hope that guy is your captain Zedeno Chara tonight. I’ll be standing there in my living room with my arms up and tears in my eyes. Like everyone else around here (and at my house) I'm pumped for the game, hell, you've even made a fan out of Crystal and that's no small feat.

I guess this went longer than I meant, but like I said... I guess it means something to me again.

The past is over for me now. There is only this game and my heart is with you as you go.

Good luck. Kick ass tonight. I’ll be with the skinny kid on the couch, living and dying with every shift and shot, and hoping for that moment that fans around here have been waiting far to long to happen.

Monday Game Rescheduled!

This just in from the league... due to the Stanley Cup Finals Game 6 the Monday night (6/13) vs the Rangers will be rescheduled to Friday 6/24. The game will still be in Hingham but now has a start time of 9:10pm.
Good news all around, and it was well received by the team.

Dr. Pounds contributed this gem that the blogger had to share.

"What’s the difference between the Sedin twins and Thelma and Louise?

One is a pair of weak little girls and the other is Thelma and Louise."

To which Eric Bauer Replied:
"Tough to make this comparison because at least thelma and louise had balls."

4-2 win

Another Stanley Cup night on the schedule for the Dead in Gold against redundant opponent the Tigers resulted in another win keeping the early season streak alive for the Cadavers. An 7pm start time led to a few late arrivals but in general everyone made it to the bench in the early going. Really it was a good thing as it allowed everyone to get their skate on and get home, or to the bar, or to their buddies house to watch the B's take the 'Nucks apart at the seams later that night.
But first the Dead in Gold had the Tigers (again) to deal with on the Quincy sheet.

(not really sure of that breakdown... things got pretty mixed up during the game)

The early going would be the predictable, if not really redundant at this point even matchup with decent chances at both ends. Jon Cole would have the chance to show of his excellent netminding for Mom and Dad (in town from Nevada) as he turned aside several good chances that the Red would throw his way in the first. The Gold kept it together though and once Roman and Daley made it to the bench things on offense started to percolate.

Jim Sullivan would take a nice rush into the red zone as time wound down in the first. He would hit streaking Matt Elliot (not naked) on the opposite post and Matty would wrist it home for the 1-0 lead literally as time expired. A daggah for sure. A side note here as Matty has certainly found the offense lately notching his 2nd goal and 4th point in the early going.

The second would see the games only penalty as Mike Campbell would go for a trip after taking a guy out deep in our own end. No blood on the pk and things would continue to play pretty even as the period went. Mike Daley would get a true, all alone, nobody even close breakaway that he would take right to the Red netminder. Mike had time to make himself a peanut butter and jelly sandwich (trimmed crusts) and wait out the goalie before anyone caught up, but his wrist shot sailed just wide of the keeper and the right post.

Not long after the Gold would give up a breakaway of their own that the Red would finish nicely to tie the game. Jon really had no shot on that one as the Red was in clean after beating the pinching Gold D men (Bauer and Fosdick). The second would end 1-1 and it was clear it would be a grind to the end.

The third was a grind but good things started to happen for Gold just a few minutes in. George Moorachian would pick up a broken play in the neutral zone, and would rush up ice and bury a shot for the lead unassisted. This seemed to take a little wind out of the Tigers sails and the Gold did a good job of continuing to take the play to them.
Sully would strike next on another nice feed from Nelson (always working hard) and the Cadavers were up 3-1 about halfway through the period.

Mike Daley would get the next one, (from Jeff) in the left faceoff circle and the Gold were playing with a very nice 4-1 lead for most of the rest of the game. The shot went off of Greggy's leg so he will also be awarded an "in the line of duty" assist. The Tigers would make a nice final push but only in the last minute and a half. They would finally land another one after a bunch of hard work in front of Jon Cole and the score was 4-2. That's how this one would end though as the Gold would take the puck away with about 20 seconds left and wouldn't give it back.
Everyone was off to their cars to catch the Cup action right afterward and there was a rare lack of 4th period activity.

Game Stars
3rd Star: Tireless Mike Daley. A helper and a bunch of ground covered all night. Another great effort

2nd Star: Jon Cole. A bunch of very nice stops and his usual quality play.

1st Star: Jim Sullivan. A goal and an assist on a night when he was clearly struggling at times. Good work sticking with it Sully.

Honorable Mention: Milan Lucic for clobbering that fuckbag Burrows in the Third. The only way that exchange could have been better were if Looch put his fingers UP Burrows nose... like to his wrist.

The Coon of Shame: is awarded to another Canuck fuckbag, Arron Rome for his hit on Nathan Horton. True douchbaggery deserves the Coon weather you play with us or not. Lets hope Horty has not lingering effects from this nasty elbow.

Dear Boston Bruins,
I know you haven't heard from me in a while... since we broke up about 10 years ago... (ok I left, and you never even noticed) but I felt the need to reach out. I've been watching your recent success, not that you care, and I'll be tuning in again tonight.
Even though you are still a barley above average team, in a league full of mediocrity, you've done well this year. Sure, your goalie has played out of his head and really carried your average roster much farther than I expected... but you have done well for yourselves and... well... ok I'll say it... I'm happy for you.
I still don't have much confidence you'll win tonight, or in the finals if you do advance... and I still think your owner is a shitbag thief, and I'll never forgive him for how he's run the club.. but that's beside the point now.
I guess I'm writing just to tell you... gosh this is kinda hard... good luck tonight. Its not that I care, or even want to get back together or anything... I just want something good to happen to all those poor souls you've been torturing for the last 30+ years. There I said it.

Cadavers(3) vs Tigers
Sunday May 22
Canton 7:10pm

3-1 win

The Cadavers faced the Tigers for the second time in the early summer season and came away with a hard working, well played win against our frequent foe. The clubs were evenly matched on the ice and bench at 10 each and the play was close, as we’ve seen so many times before. Even a few fans in the stands for each squad with the early game time which was nice.
Here is your Dead in Gold roster.
Jacob “The Puck Stops Here” Marks in Net

O2: Baker, Elliot and Gregson

The teams would get a quick feel for each other, and while the pace was not exactly “break neck” it was good for us and there were a few chances at both ends. Jacob played his usual very solid game in the pipes and Roman and Baker were able to move things around on offense a bit. The Gold would have the advantage in chances but the game would stay scoreless until well halfway through the first.

The Tigers would hit a long home run pass to a forward sneaking up through center and he would be sprung, a completely clear, no one even close break away that he did a nice job finishing for the 1-0 lead. Jacob was the only Zombie within 50-60 feet of the puck.

The Golden Corpses didn’t let it take the edge off though and it wasn’t long after when they would strike back. The play would be held in the zone and sent back in by Eric Bauer, who had a nice game at the left point opposite George. Matt Elliot would take if from Eric then send it over to uncovered Steve Baker who would rip a slapper from about 15 feet that met the twine and tied the game. End of one, 1-1.

The second would see a lot more close action. Both keepers would make some good stops and the offenses would come up empty on both sides. Bauer would go for a take down right in front of the Gold bench but no scoring on the penalty. End of two, still 1-1.

The 3^rd would see the Gold pull ahead in chances and in the score not long into the period. The Tigers would take a too many men on the ice penalty, something we were in danger of a few times and the Gold would make the most of the advantage. Bauer would send a nice low slapshot into the net off a Roman faceoff win (not very clean… but a win) and the GoldenZombies were up 2-1.

It seemed like a long period as Red would ratchet it up to try and get back to even in the game. Jacob would stand tall suffing out everything that came close. Scott Pounds would just miss an offensive chance on a beauty of a feed from Roman, and things would get tighter and tighter into the final minutes.

Jeff would take a turnover high in our own end and would spring Matt Elliot with a pass that send him in alone on the right side. Matty would rip a wrist shot that would find paydirt and the game was iced 3-1.
Red would get a couple more rushes and chances but nothing dangerous and that’s how the game would end. A nice job from all the Zombies.

Game Stars:

3^rdStar: Jacob Marks. Continuing to show great stuff in the pipes.

2^ndStar: Eric Bauer. Goal and an assist and a penalty. All over the score sheet and a decent game even though I'll bet he still doesn't think he should have been called for the take-down.

1^stStar: Matt Elliot who also had a goal and an assist. A solid night all the way around for Matty who has played great in the early going this season. His goal late in the third to put the game away was a thing of beauty. Nice work Matt.

Cads boil Lobsters for 2nd win!

6-1 Win.

The second game of the summer season saw the dead in Red taking on an opponent from seasons past in the Lobsters in Dedham on Thursday night. The Cads would play strong and come away with a big win after reuniting with the shelfish.

From all reports the game was really never close. Jon Cole played is usual very solid game in net and by all account Team Zombie passed and skated well enough to control the game most of the way.
Here is a basic rundown on scoring.
One goal in the first, Mike Daley unassisted to put the Zombies up 1-0.

The Second period would see Eric Bauer take a tripping call.
Steve Baker would score from Roman and Campbell, and the Lobsters would put one home to make it a 2-1 game after w periods.

The Third period was all Zombie. Larry would score his first of the season with help from Nelson and George at 13:30. Baker would land his second of the night from Gregson just two minutes later and the rout was on.
Kevin Parker would score (from Larry) with just over 2 minutes remaining and Larry himself would close things out, (from Nelson and Parker) with under a minute. Nothing like the Stat Whore squeezing one in before the buzzer with a 4 goal lead.
Great work all the way around by Team Zombie and the season is off to a nice 2 and 0 start.

3rd Star: Kevin Parker for a goal and an assist and all around solid veteran play.
2nd Star: Steve Baker for a pair of goals and not a single penalty... or moment of insanity. Nice work.
1st Star: Larry Stat Whore Bell. 2 goals and an assist. LB is already in mid-season form.
